my scientific parts says 'black is the absence of colour', my colour theory / designer side says 'black is a colour'

Can you somewhat explain why the difference?

well, according to physics, we can only see black where there is very little light, or all light gets absorbed

so that makes black the odd 'colour' out: it's defined by the absence of colour

hard to say, I guess black has its own semiotic properties...and that's what's important to me when using it to communicate something

Yeah... a spread I'm working on will have an image though until the image is ready I use shades of grey/black as a substitute for how much weight/heirarchy the image will have - though the image won't be in grey/black ..if I'm making sense lol

My basic answer is black is not a color.... but we often call it like it is a color just because its language and most will understand. But its not a color.

Went to see a Pop art exhibit in the tate iin london with my sister when i was like 14/15...there was this double door and as soon as we walked in there was a GIANT photo of a pornographic closeup ....there were sculptures everywhere and all I could do was keep walking and pretending to be mildly interested from a purely artistic point of view....so awkward

that was a factor yes.. had to step back and anaylize has 99.5% of everything up relied on something that involved one of the companies plus I had to roll up some updates on legacy sites that didnt utilize WP well. Afterwards worked on google dev tools and trying to get my SEO to number 1 for a few sites
