Q: Are QR codes a good idea?

ScottI recently had a discussion with a client. He asked me if I felt a QR code on a marketing piece would be beneficial. I asked him, "What would the code contain? What information would the code convey?" His general response was "contact information". To which I replied, "When was the last time yo...

I'm afraid I'm being biased because I'm all for that question but pretty sure it should be closed. Like so many other questions on here it has nothing to do with design :\ I'll wait to see what you and others think though. My marketing interest makes me want to leave it open hence the bias

I'm giving it an answer

@ZachSaucier do you think its related to design though or are you also being biased because its Scott asking and its interesting?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I wanted to answer it
if it has to be migrated so be it

cant be, there's no marketing exchange. Either it stays here or it gets the axe

I think it's a reasonable question in of itself
it is asking if a marketing technique is effective and if so, when
since GD largely deals with marketing I think it's ok

12:48 PM
Take it to meta, maybe?
Are marketing strategy questions on topic? or the like.

I vote for it to stay. It is an issue that many Graphic Designers struggle with, both for themselves and in client interaction.
I do think it is a gray area, but we're champions of those here already :)
Oh and hi all

[wave]
I think it should stay too, but chat is the wrong place to make that decision.

It has been done

Q: Where is the cut off on marketing questions?

RyanAre QR codes a good idea? To be clear I like the above question as a question. I'm just not sure its a good fit for our website. Other topics in the marketing tag appear more design focused to me: How much text should I use for an ad image? Using real products when creating fake mockups The...

hehe, good work, @Ryan :)

1:05 PM
Hooray!
Now for the silent voting, as is my wont.

Was that or hammering it. I like the question, I just don't see any mention of design at all. IMO it needs to be closed to maintain consistency

why'd you remove the meta link above?

Just cause I had already linked it really

oh, didn't read that :P
assumed it was the Q link above
it's getting a lot of views from the hot Qs section

I just think it needs to be reworded but now its probably too late
It should be in some way discussing QR codes from a design perspective. Not just asking, "Are QR codes useful?" That's like if we allowed a question asking, "Are links useful?"

2:10 PM
@Ryan I feel like your QR code answer is the same as mine :P

@ZachSaucier I don't

morning fellow designers..

hey @Darth_Vader

sup, how have u been?

I'm okay, you?

busy

3:44 PM
maintainably so?

3:59 PM
i swore we had a question that dpi for images on the web do not matter

lots of them
just about 60% of the questions in ? :P

no, I meant one where it laid out everything

ah. hm.

I found part of it on DA01, think that was what I was thinking about

4:21 PM
are we allowing font recomendations now or not?

that's sort of a weird grey area where we have the tag but the questions are hit or miss
alternative fonts suggestions can be objective, and those kinds of questions are indisputably heavily reusable
the top voted questions in that tag have massive amounts of views graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/…

4:54 PM
Okay i think its against the rules in some ways but I am voting for more leeway
@Darth_Vader i have seen that so many times in answer. But a question too?

@joojaa ?? clarify please
I was referring to this:

Q: Font for a magazine text to print

SandyWhich fonts are used in magazines for print with lots of text that make it easy to read for all ages.

I dont see how its not broad or biased.. how can we provide an answer to this?

@Darth_Vader <- this message
The font question can not be answered.

sorry when I read it I feel like its bait for spam

im getting closer to the 10K mark

I do see John's point about the tag and its great but this question just appears to be one with too much of a wide scope to really get a good answer

5:01 PM
agreed

6:07 PM
@ZachSaucier what's a good way to take an existing site and convert everything to ems?

6:18 PM
@Ryan I see your point.. don't necessarily agree.. but I see it. I did just change the title.

Q: How to stop a brush from darkening the color of a previous stroke?

ReotheNew In the image above, I showcase the problem. I have some marker brushes that have a nice texture on them which shows the tooth of the paper. I'd like to get a more consistent look when I'm coloring in an area, but when I go over the same area in more than one stroke, the paint darkens (Example #...

It concerns me that more than one person answered that brush question without being able to recognize the brush itself has transparency
@Scott I think its an interesting question, with a little rewording I think it could be even stronger towards the design perspective but I think its too late for that or for closing which is why I then answered it myself as well

yeah I figured. Feel free to reword if you think it needs it.
I think you understand the context I'm driving at so I trust you to reword it as you see fit.

nah too late now and willing to guess your name and rep went a long way in carrying it. If some new user came in and posted that I'm willing to bet money on a few close votes

6:25 PM
maybe... I don't see it that way though :)
I wouldn't have posted it if I agreed with you :)

but seriously does it concern you that people are so confused by that brush question?

concern? nope... people don't understand many things. A lot of the question we get, and the answers to them, can be along the same lines of just missing or being unaware of some basic item.
To you it seems obvious the brush has transparency, but users without as much experience may not even consider that.

@Scott ya not bad, just trying to build solid documentation for source files that can be used for print and digital
@Scott I think this what seperates answer's accuracy
if ryan left an answer pointing all this out I would upvote

6:40 PM
@Darth_Vader what do you mean? I thought I did leave an answer?

havent gone back to it, will in a little bit and read up on it

6:57 PM
@Ryan good answer

7:10 PM
HA Just got the most moronic telemarketing call ever
Really think east indian accent -- "We're receiving information from your computer that it is severely effected by damaging software."
That's all it took for me to use some choice words :)

I got a marketing email this morning, its the only email I got today. Makes me feel less lonely

I should have strung the guy along... asked what my IP was... what the software was doing... jsut wasted his time :)

@Scott define "choice" words, lol

can't... they'll get flagged :)

Mine was from a local graphic designer offering her design services and linking me to her website. I politely replied I handle everything for us but would keep her in mind when we start exporting

7:16 PM
I get a call every other week I need to claim my business something

I had too much time on my hands when I got one of those calls and quickly booted an XP VM with honeypots like "credit_cards.txt" and "banking_logins.txt" on the desktop
unsurprisingly, they snagged them

@JohnB wait someone was actually in your computer??

yeah, they tell you that your computer has issues and they will help you fix it
so they have you download remote desktop software

and you did?

oh.. I thought they call you AFTER they are in lol

7:17 PM
then they show you a bunch of harmless errors in the event viewer to prove you have a virus

I'm surprised you downloaded anything

I would have been reluctant if they wanted me to download their custom RDP software, but I'm pretty sure it was just TeamViewer or some other well known software
I just wanted to see what they would do :)

So @Scott will you be making a 4D Barcode question next?

Well these people have called 4 times this morning-- on the land line. I don't answer the land line. Finally I decided to pick it up on the 4th call to find out who in Texas was callign me.
@Ryan doubtful :) Give me a break... I try and come up with non-adobe questions and it's not like I post a whole lot of "close to off-topic' stuff :)

anything not adobe is off-topic

7:21 PM
apparently :)
.. I'll never get the Inquisitive badge.. booo-hooo

never seen one of those

They're around probably just never knew what it was and ignored it

nope never seen one... But I'm in a smaller rural area too so....
I'd remember it if I saw it.... being a designer and all :)

Nah I've only ever seen those on magazines and products. Never in signage
trying to think what type of product I've seen that on

7:24 PM
hmm.. okay maybe I missed it on packaging. If it's not intriguing packaging design I tend to gloss over it.

I feel like one of the advertisers I worked with out of Europe used it in their ad. Looking online all I find is stuff linking the format to Microsoft
And a nice message on the main page:
"This August 19, 2013 notice is to inform our Microsoft Tag customers that the Microsoft Tag service will terminate in two years, on August 19th, 2015."
We're just in time!!
I'll get the 40oz ready

Love up to date web sites :)

(two years, August 19th 2015.. it is up to date)

Hi, I am designing my own website with HTML, however I am not a professional web designer. Is there any web site which suggests good color combinations which I can use in my website? Colors for my text, background, header, etc.

8:17 PM
@EnthusiasticStudent you still around?

@ZachSaucier yes

@ZachSaucier wow.... thanks...

it's more usable now if you refresh

@ZachSaucier :)) I am not that much lazy...

8:33 PM
@ZachSaucier is there any way to have the color codes of the combinations on this site you introduced? thedayscolor.com

You can right click -> inspect element and look for the background color or use an extension like ColorZilla to detect it (I recommend using an extension to make it easy)

@ZachSaucier very well... thank you indeed... I am a beginner in web design and html, but working with web design for a day or two' it really calms me and is joyful for me...

glad to hear it :)

wow... you have instructions for beginners... thanks...

no problem :)
