@AndrewH The shape you need.... silly. :)
Nice @BESW I know a whole new world opened up to me when I purchased my first tablet. :)

I've been thinking about it for... oh, ten years or more, but I finally hit the point in my professional advancement where I really felt like it was the necessary next step.
If getting things shipped out here weren't such a pain in the neck, I'd've probably done it earlier.

Wacom is like 200mi north of me.. even if I choose "standard 5-7 day" I get it in 3 most of the time.

Wacom won't ship to me at all.

I was really unsure when I bought my first graphire.. thought I was wasting $100. But in reality I spent twice as much on an Intuos like 3 monhts later. (this was decades ago)

12:29 AM
I'm not on their destination drop-down, so I literally can't give them my address; also they don't ship anything over 3 lbs by any delivery service which can reach me (shipping ground to Guam doesn't really work).

Yeah I hear overseas shipping for almost anything is a nightmare.
I think I'd go nuts.. or at least be very angry and bitter :)

I find that, for example, local tech support experts know a lot more about how to actually fix things than their mainland counterparts usually do, because just ordering a new part isn't as easy--it's expensive and takes a long time, if you can get it at all.

That makes sense. Most foreign auto mechanics are a bit better versed in repairing existing parts for similar reasons.

...[sigh] They said I'd be doing a poster for King Lear. I studied Lear symbolism and iconography, did a few mockups.
...now, less than a week before the first meeting, it's Tartuffe.
I know nothing about Tartuffe.

Dom
12:55 AM
Conichiwa :)
Nice drawing / portrait @BESW

Thanks! And hi.
I'm really happy to be able to use my favourite drawing technique (scribbly light/dark building up and down from a midtone foundation) without all the mess of actually using, like, charcoal.

Dom
I dream of the day I can get a decent one
Until then I scribble on paper and painstakingly redraw in AI :(
Hi @Scott thanks for the support :D

1:17 AM
...YouTube auto-generated subtitles make tutorials a lot less boring.
"...if you have a solid color in the Phil..."

Scott is outsourcing his work to GD.SE now I see

Dom
1:39 AM
@JohnB thoughts on the latest volley before I hit the hay?

thoughts deployed

Dom
cheers :) cya all
/goodnight if applicable

@JohnB Outsourcing?
and @Dom if I agree, I agree :)

Q: Does anyone know how to build a badge in vector and make it a logo?

user263197I'm Scott and just joined up with Meta Stack and I invented and patented the worlds only cooling device that uses a miniature air compressor and lithium battery to put out up to 125 p.s.i. you can also inflate car tires etc. I have been working on this project over 10 years and am trying to incor...

Yeah, I jsut saw it. :)
Wish I could outsource some :)

Q: Why can I still cast votes for on hold questions?

ScottWhen a question is put On Hold users can still cast up or down votes. In very rare cases are these up votes. Most often they are down votes. Since the question is closed, it seems like "piling on" negativity to allow users to cast down votes when the user already isn't going to get answers. Is...

12 hours later…
2:20 PM
@Scott boss got Intuous Pen & Touch Medium. Its awkward as anything to me right now.

I'm watching a ton of YouTube videos for tutorials/tips/introductions/just seeing the different ways people use their tablets.

@Matt: Hey, let me know if you still want to know suggestions about source files and NAS

sure do.. Its crazy trying to figure out how to store everything

Anyone on use an Intuos Tablet?

Yo.

2:35 PM
@BESW is that a yes?

Yup.
P&T Medium, just got it a couple weeks ago.

I just got P&T Medium this morning, first time using it.

@Ryan ive got an old wacom tablet but never use it

What program are you using it with primarily?

bought from BB

2:36 PM
I changed the screen setting to only Monitor 2 but its still registering across monitors. Also trying to figure out how to make the button act as undo
Photoshop

It was pretty easy for me to integrate into my Photoshop usage, but Illustrator's giving me a bit more trouble. Mostly, probably, just because I'm more comfortable in Photoshop anyway.

I feel like these answers are outdated - how are they not off topic due to brainstorming?

You need to go into the Wacom Tablet settings--should be accessible from the radial menu.

I did go in there

You'll notice that, once you've used the tablet with Photoshop, it'll show up as an option.
Each Adobe program needs to have its settings re-done for that particular program, including monitor and button mapping.

2:40 PM
got the monitor now but not the undo button

For the undo button, you want the "Keystroke" option.

I changed the Pen bottom button to "Back"
ah I see did that and then {Ctrl}z -- its working now. Thanks

In Photoshop, I have the left buttons as "step forward" and "step back," the right buttons are zoom in and out, and the rocker button on the pen is mapped to right-click (rock up) and pan/scroll (rock down).

Well for what I'm doing at least right now its diagramming over screencaps for a video
If I were painting I'd probably want more configurations

Today I started really getting into Illustrator with the tablet. It's rough going.
Face still needs a lot of work.

2:48 PM
@Matt This is what I do for my web files, which are Visual Studio code. I currently have a DLink ShareCenter. They are basically, out of the box, a small Linux server. By installing a couple of things on it I was able to use it as if it would be a regular Linux server.
I installed Subversion on it and now I use it from Visual Studio as a Subversion server. It supports DDNS (and it even came with a free account with dyn.com) so I can use it not only from my studio (aka home) but also remotely (if I get cabin fever or if I need to work from my client's office).
I could use subversion also for my design files, not only for my code, but I have never gotten to do so because I use Dropbox with my colleagues and Dropbox keeps a version of the files already. You could give it a try, as long as you are not afraid of Linux. Lol. Here is a "how to" link (wonkygibbon.co.uk/…)

@BESW that looks pretty terrific to me. Cabage Patch Monstar lol

Working from this Photoshop sketch:

What are the "Left Buttons" and "Right Buttons" and even the wheel? I see Radial Menu in the Properties but no idea how to access it
I wouldn't mind having an easy way to cycle through a limited swatch pallette

Left and Right buttons are on the pad, not on the pen.

I currently use FreeNas but I have a folder setup for my htdocs when I code in my web server, work_files, and all other design_files..

2:49 PM
Radial Menu is an on-screen interface option that by default is mapped to the top right button.
This was my first attempt at it in Illustrator; I'm going again now that I have a little bit of familiarity:

AWESOME!! love the coloring

Going for more bright colours, and more variety, in the new iteration.

And my top right doesn't do anything, just shows a thing at top with Shift / Alt / Ctrl / Windows Key --- top right being Ctrl

Purples and oranges and such.
Then you need to map the Radial Menu option to a button somewhere in order to access it.
Personally I don't use it much; too many gestures when I've already got all the keyboard shortcuts memorised.

ah yes I see
yeah not sure I'll use that. I need to find a way to just quickly change from like a Yellow Color to a Blue. Maybe for now if I'm only using 2 colors for diagrams I'll just map a button to (X) and make it Foreground/Background

2:53 PM
@Matt Do you use SVN on FreeNass or anything like that? The reason I use it is because I could integrate it with Visual Studio so I can check in/out, get previous versions, etc, without having to do it manually

@Ryan Blob layer!

?

Put your colours as blobs in a locked layer on top of all the other layers. Hit "i" for the eyedropper, hit the blob you want, switch back to your tool of choice.
You can see my blob layer in the second image I linked.
(And a bit of it in the first, with notes jotted next to 'em.)

I mean wouldn't it be easier to just have a limited swatch palette at that rate?

Depends on your workflow.
Personally, even with the pen tablet, I have my other hand on the keyboard for shortcuts.

2:58 PM
This is really going to take getting use to. I keep missing on the Step Back button because when I rest my hand the tip is too far out

Yup.
Give it some time, and try to use your pen for everyday tasks as well as specialised ones.
The more you use your pen instead of your mouse, the more familiar you'll be with it--so put the mouse in a drawer and just use the pen if you can tolerate it at all.
Now, it's 1am. Goodnight, and have fun.

have a goodnight, thanks for the tips on getting it configured. They're quick install was pretty useless manual

3:28 PM
this tablet stuff is so weird right now. Makes my hand hurt. If I look at screen while writing its pretty terrible. If I get in position then look down at the tablet as though I'm writing on paper it comes out a lot better

3:54 PM
@cockypup havent messed with it yet. was looking at using a github jail

1 hour ago, by Zach Saucier
I feel like these answers are outdated - how are they not off topic due to brainstorming?

They definitely are brainstorming, but it's a type of reusable brainstorming that seems to be okay for our format

GD has this weird stance of "this is off topic unless we deem it useful" which I don't understand

yes, we are weird like that

yep... weird..

4:00 PM
the brainstorming close reason is not my favorite

@Matt Never tried that one. Actually, I have never tried using versioning software with art source files, only with code.

I think we could just close questions like that as too broad

I would agree, but I don't know what to think anymore :P

@cockypup ya thats where Im having issues, too. I have one for code and the other for designs is a different workflow
@ZachSaucier and... welcome to GD, lol

one of our top voted questions is brainstorming graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/q/323/8708
but, check the language for the close reason:
> This looks like brainstorming/idea gathering for a specific project
if it's widely applicable, why not?
something like "I need to design a logo for an energy company, any ideas?" is the kind specific project brainstorming that we don't want
we do get those, but not very often

Q: Design Volleyball

RyanDesign Volleyball As a way of increasing community activities we've created a chatroom, Design Volleyball. The format is very open. Come in, pick an existing image you like, and make something new from it. Can be subtle changes or substantial changes. Just get the creativity going. We recommen...

it's difficult to build a 100% objective Q&A site focused on Graphic Design. We bend the SE rules probably a lot more than most of the other network sites because GD is subjective in nature. The rules we make are to prevent it from becoming a free-for-all yet still allow subjective questions that will work on the SE platform

Dom
critique would also be 'idea gathering for a specific project' but it seems to work because there is a minimum level of quality expected in questions
I just popped in to post this:

haha

Dom
Also I think design volleyball is fun @Ryan
I hope everyone keeps doing it

yeah, critiques are probably the most anti-SE questions that we allow

4:18 PM
haha. poor IE. He is not that bad lately

Dom
@cockypup that's what I thought but it's also kind of the point, they're just starting to catch up with things other browsers were doing years ago

All browsers suck right now, I have no clear favorite
all I know is I hate Safari most right now

what's your least unfavourite?

Dom
I haven't tested in Safari for atleast a year :/
I'm afraid to see what it might do to my site

@Vincent I use Chrome mostly

4:20 PM
Safari for Windows. Wild as its name implies

they haven't worked on Safari for Windows since '09 IIRC

...which causes me to second your notion of hating it most

the regular Safari is better but is always behind when it comes to specs and stuff
Apple to me is getting worse - abusing the power they have

Dom
Far more commercially focused since Steve Jobs passed away

isn't IE the front runner for HTML5 specs?
it was at one point somewhat recently, I don't know if that is the case anymore

4:24 PM
@JohnB it's completely mixed
some browsers support some stuff, others support other stuff

Dom
IE doesn't support srcset at all
installing safari atm

okay nevermind, not even close according to caniuse
IE 58% / Firefox 78% / Chrome 83% / Safari 69% / Opera 82%
for "currently selected criteria"

I was looking at that as well: caniuse.com/…

@JohnB surprised to see opera that high... mobile opera probably has 20%, lol

oh, the link did not keep the selections... sorry about that

4:28 PM
@ZachSaucier you're almost spot on, Opera Mini shows 18%

lol
I'm too generous :P
I suppose the fairly good support is because they are pretty much just chrome reskinned

Dom
So Safari completely craps on my images :/

I have never come across a client or user that actually uses Opera

Dom
all squashed up and some missing
on the plus side the webfonts look much nicer than on Chrome

@cockypup as a web dev I can only remember one - another dev :P
who uses it as their main anyway

4:32 PM
I wonder if cross browser consistency for web fonts will ever be realized in my lifetime
I am not hopeful

Dom
anyone know how much share of the market safari has?

@JohnB I think we'll get there for a lot of type features

@Dom this is a good site to check, you can set your region gs.statcounter.com

I'm part of (I read them, anyway) some specs discussion groups, they talk about type features every so often

cool, I love reading about that stuff
this is a decent newsletter if you're interested html5weekly.com

Dom
4:34 PM
@JohnB nice!
10.2% Worldwide / 22.5% UK :'(

@JohnB the ones I'm a part of are much more technical, but I'll try it out for a bit :P

Dom
22.5% is far too much to ignore zzzz

it depends on your users more than anything

@ZachSaucier they do sometimes highlight technical stuff like changes to the spec. But yes there's a lot of fluff too

you should have analytics running to give you that sort of thing

Dom
4:36 PM
@ZachSaucier You see anything about webfonts looking better and worse at slightly different sizes?

@JohnB What fun would it be if I don't get yelled at every time "I get the tracking all wrong, it looks cramped in Chrome"?

@Dom that's been a problem for years :P
as for fixes, I think it's up to the vendors, not the specs guys
for the most part anyway

for sure

Dom
Maybe it could have something to do with the limitations of the WOFF format aswell

sure

Dom
4:38 PM
I don't know anything to say just speculating

there's little talk of new formats
the opentype movement is an interesting one to see develop

Chrome does not render subpixels properly, and that also has a lot to do with webfonts looking all mangled. No fractional tracking, for example. It is either 0px or 1px. At least last time I checked.

Dom
I suppose with screen pixel densities increasing that's not so much of a problem anymore
1px on a 440PPI screen is quite small I think
but on my basic screen I do still see poor rendering in Chrome

Dom
4:53 PM
I contacted LinkedIn to claim a company page, they made me add an email ending in the same domain as the company website, I did it and they say we've added you, go and edit it... I go to edit it and some random person has been assigned as administrator :/
It takes a day between every communication, so they're slowing me down a lot now

BTW, I stand corrected. I just checked. Chrome now is rendering fractional tracking correctly. Yay! jsfiddle.net/cockypup/0n02uok5

5:14 PM
why was this migrated?
1
A: Why are my images in my brochure blurry after EXPORTED as PDF?? Was clear before but now blurry on print and Indesign?

joojaaMissing links warning means that your document is terminally broken for printing. You should never, ever, send anything to print with this warning. What you need to do is relink the originals, that is if you still have them around. What has happened is that the original files are missing. InDesi...

isn't this a graphics design issue. Sure its also use support but its quite clearly something a graphics designer should know,
By same token most questions should be in super user?
I mean the likelihood that superuser will do anything more than we did is infinitesimal.

5:38 PM
Hey guys, what is acceptable when it comes to critique in a question? One of the questions I commented on asked about kerning. How would that user get feedback for that? Also is there a FAQ for Graphic Design that's not /tour?

Dom
@joojaa I think missing links sort of does fall into a software bug issue thingy, it's useful to know for a designer but if someone has that question again they should probably also be referred to superuser
It's borderline, and I would've skipped it myself in review because I don't like the tricky situations :)
@AndrewH I haven't seen the question yet but I imagine a kerning critique would be welcome
I think we've had similar Q's before

@Dom +1

Dom
Hello everybodyyy

@Ryan it just takes adjustment. :) Put your mouse in a drawer fo ra week and just use the tablet :)
@AndrewH we've done kerning issues here before graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/26476/…

Dom
I can't find the new one you're referring to @AndrewH

5:54 PM
@AndrewH Smart guides are not helping pretty much, cause the transform size are not same for all groups. Also yes I'm confused about the kerning. — tintinmj 1 hour ago
thanks @Scott

No problem. I say go for it :)

Dom
I'm hoping to see another volley so that I can volley back tonight :)

@AndrewH I think he is basing it on the neon location

Dom
@ZachSaucier I didn't actually get to play footie yesterday, I'm still carrying an injury from the week before, I tried but couldn't

:(
I had a blast at ours yesterday, played mostly well
only a couple missed shots and one horrid giveaway because I thought he was on our team (we don't have uniforms or anything)

Dom
5:59 PM
@Matt been meaning to say sorry about the other day, I really didn't mean to have a discussion in here when you asked me to make a separate room, it just happened
@ZachSaucier nice! Do you play 5, 7 or 11 a side?

no issues here.. I just didnt want the chat to turn into a bickering session

Dom
and it didn't :)

thankfully, yes
@ZachSaucier you get any of this snow down there?

Dom
@Matt did you figure out how to merge / overflow cells in google docs?

@Matt all rain, unfortunately

Dom
6:02 PM
I can help but it was ages ago, so you might've figured it out already

though yesterday's weather was sunny and 75, so no complaints there :D

I know how to merge it was more on turning off cell modifications

@Dom Iintramurals are 7 a side, yesterday we played indoor which is 6 a side
it's not a full field

man we went from 65 to 24 in hours and now we have ice and snow, about 2-4"
so all the flooded areas turn into ice rinks

oooh

Dom
6:03 PM
atleast you get some fun stuff, we just get slush and black ice here

im tired of ice

Dom
the answer is to make enough money to relocate with the sun :)
follow it around the world

nah I like seasons but where I live we get a new season every week

I think we are getting 6" today

snow or ice?

6:06 PM
snow, just snapped that pic

67° and sunny today :) pffffffffft

@Matt we've had about 3 different seasons today :)

@Scott one - think that would give me carpal tunnel. two - I'd at least need to wait until I get the configuration down before trying that

@ZachSaucier must be a southern thing

:) It'll actually help avoid carpel tunnel Ryan :) I mean you don't get CT from using pens and pencils :)

6:07 PM
@JohnB I wish we had that instead of ice

it should mostly be melted next week looks like

can any macbook users verify that clamshell will let you use wireless mouse and keyboard or do you have to use wired?

@Scott nah not CTS but my hand cramps up quick when I write

@Scott I don't understand what flipping the text on your kerning answer does. It just distracts me :P

@ZachSaucier it stops you looking at the "word" and forces you to look at shapes and spaces.
@Matt yes... if it's open. Bluetooth tends to shut off if you close it.

6:13 PM
I don't like it, hah

Im trying to run clam shell with wireless closed

Dom
That's also a trick for forging signatures, turning it upside down so you're just drawing a scribble and not trying to make letters in their handwriting

Not sure you can wireless closed. It's all bluetooth and bluetooth shuts down on close. Wired keep it awake.

Dom
@Scott you could maybe use an external usb bluetooth and 'wake on usb' if mac has that feature
just speculating

Not sure. Never tried it myself. I thought that only hard connections could allow the MBP to stay awake when closed. I don't even know if a USB connection would work. I think primarily its the video ports which cause wake on close.

Dom
6:23 PM
Ok, I cannot state anything about Mac for sure, but I think most recent windows systems allow 'wake on usb' to be enabled in the BIOS

@scott It is pretty darn awesome for coloring
just playing with some black and white drawing I found to practice using the tablet

6:39 PM
I added my answer to the neon question

7:10 PM
grrr

7:46 PM
I can definitely get used to this tablet thing
original ^

7:59 PM
@Ryan: do you notice any pen lag? I had an old Intuos long time ago and the lag used to drive me crazy.

I don't notice any. Not to say there isn't, just that I don't notice any.

Cool, maybe I will remove the "snowman decorating kit" from my Xmas wish list and add a tablet.

2 hours later…
9:49 PM
Nicely done @Ryan.

@Scott thanks

@cockypup brush lags are generally more about applications and video cards. I had a horrible lag when CS6 first came out. It turned out I needed to replace my video card. It had nothing to do with thw tablet.

Think tomorrow I'll look into more controls for it. I'd like to make some kind of button macro to switch pressure between Opacity and Size
For the initial coloring it was nice having it as size, then I switched to opacity for the highlights. But being able to switch between both would be better. Or maybe I'll see how well the tilt works for size

10:08 PM
@Ryan Preeetty sure the P&I doesn't have tilt recognition until you get to the Pro line.
