Q: Is there any use to the [images] tag?

VincentWith the recent burnination of image, I start wondering what the use of images actually is. The tag excerpt mentions that it should contain questions relating to the design of images. Arguably, that 99% of the questions of this site. Is there a good use for images? If not, can we, well, burninat...

shouldn't questions like these be closed? If not, at least made a community wiki? The purpose of the SE network is not to make big lists.

closed for sure. If it was more focused it might scrape by but an endless list for any and all inspiration is too broad

ya, I have a list of about 20 sites that would work for it

3:45 PM
@Ryan I have no idea what this is trying to accomplish, Google isn't helping much graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/q/49206/8708
what is 5 shot bracketing?

-2 -1 0 +1 +2
Exposure settings used to create an HDR photograph

ah
would this be a better question for Photo.SE or is it okay here?
(not sure that they would take it though)

I already mentioned it in their chat. I think its suitable for either. They'd probably know the answer more, but its not off-topic here so I'd leave it

cool thanks for popping into their chat

4:08 PM
@Yisela morning
er Afternoon for you I suppose

hi Ryan!
yep, 5 pm
how is it going?

Experimenting with how to start doing the more technical videos. Had thought about asking boss for a tablet and some proper screencap software. Think it might be time
Just did a volley in the design chat as well. Not sure if you even saw that room but hope you participate sometime

@Ryan which room?
@Ryan that sounds like a good idea, and a tablet is not expensive at all

 Design Volleyball

Keep the dimensions, make it your own.

I love the name, didn't know the room

Q: Its time to expand what GD is about!

MattIve seen other graduated sites do this but I've never seen GD do it but I want us, as a community, to possibly reflect or have chat sessions where we can question professionals in the field. I know in beta we had some talks about this but no one would pull the trigger so I hope I am doing that. ...

I missed that post! Hmm very interesting!!

Dom
4:29 PM
Howdy all

hi Dom!!

Dom
I finally get what that is @ZachSaucier

Dom
Hi @Yisela!!!

@ZachSaucier Did you do that?
ah :)

one day, lol
even though I'm far more developer than designer

Dom
At first I thought it said 'Waferouake' then I saw the teeny flick on the q

@Dom How's your handsome baby?

Dom
@Yisela He's getting cheeky :)

4:32 PM
how old is he now?

Dom
nearly 16 months
woah

wow

Dom
I just realised myself lol

sound bulb - cool concept

Dom
I keep saying 1 year 3 months, which I somehow think is 13 months

4:34 PM
haha yeah, I would think that too
@ZachSaucier would it actually make sounds?

I'm not entirely sure, there wasn't any detail. I'll look for some

Dom
How's Germany? @Yisela
is that where you are?

yes, Frankfurt

it's two independent components stuffed into each bulb apparently - light and speaker

it's nice and cold, and things are finally picking up work-wise
also I'm visiting my family in a couple of weeks :) I'm really happy

4:38 PM
there are some companies making them now, I'm curious how they sound

Dom
@Yisela I'm glad to hear that :)

graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/49230/… --> Aren't roman numbers just normal letters?

Dom
I'm guessing they mean IVX etc.?

there are ascii characters for them IIRC, but they can be made with fonts

it feels like the ascii would look exactly like the uppercase letters
but maybe he wants something more stylized

Dom
4:41 PM
That's what I was thinking, but that probably depends on the font as Zach sort of mentioned
Penny for your thoughts on this?

is it a banner for a website?

Dom
I described it with the link :)

yep, saw it haha
I like it! But I don't understand some of the lines, for example to the left of the world, it's kind of cut off, and then in the top left corner there is a bit missing

Dom
damn that's a keen eye lol
I was hoping that'd go unnoticed

also, I'd be careful to make the sky look too stormy - blue is good, but when it gets too dark it makes me think of a rainy day
haha
well, you ask a designer, civilians probably won't notice :P

Dom
4:52 PM
I couldn't spend more than 30 mins or buy any new graphics for the peanuts he's agreed to pay me

hahaha
then it's perfect!

Dom
I just need to get everything looking decent to get a starting job or new project
the lines were because of the limitations of the graphics lol
I tried to blur them but must have messed it up
and now it's uploaded in too many places to bother changing :D

hahaha

Dom
the profile picture / company logo is almost always around the bottom left aswell

cute logo
it's like vans hanging out
planning a murder or something

Dom
4:59 PM
haha! that is my favourite comment
even the murder bit
I had to draw them from a picture he'd used on his brochure for 10+ years
the previous version makes me cringe
but it's on the uniforms and the vans already so..

the previous one?

Dom
it's on the site atm
still haven't finished the new site, a few days away \0/

cool!!
do you work for them full time?

Dom
I work for peanuts like a monkey :/
going to get paid about 10% of it's value, if that
but much much more if it brings in business
which I should be confident that it will

yeah, I know how you feel
as long as you have a plan to progress that's fine
make sure you give your best so you can add it to your portfolio

Dom
5:21 PM
sorry was AFK
@Yisela those are my sentiments exactly :)

@Scott -- My boss agreed to get me a tablet to make videos with. Reading around people are talking about different size Bamboo Tablets and to get the Medium. Except I don't see any Medium sized Bamboo. Am I correct in thinking, Intuos Pen & Touch Small is what use to be Bamboo Medium?

@Ryan the best I can figure... Intuos Pen = bamboo, Intuos Pen & Touch Small = Bamboo Create Small, Intuos Pen & Touch Medium = Bamboo Create Medium, Intuos Manga = Bamboo Pro (or whatever they called it). It's too bad they won't spring for an Intuos Pro, but that extra $100-$150 is understandable if they want to avoid that. I'd shoot for the IP&T Med if you can... the small may be too small. But for me, any tablet is better than no tablet.
If you call Wacom, they are very happy to discuss the product variations with you.

Pen and Touch Medium vs Manga only difference from specs is Medium comes with AutoDesk Sketch while Manga comes with some Manga package. Rest looks identical
Realize I'm probably not drawing on it, just writing Khan Academy style over videos / screenshots.

I haven't really scoured the specs :) I'd probably not get the "Manga" anyway.
See for video the rotary touch on teh Intuos Pro's will really be helpful. It can be used as a jog wheel.

What do you mean? Like moving frames?

yeah the rotatory touch can be used like you would use a jog shuttle device
With the ability to simply rotate it to move frames
Clockwise for forward, counter clockwise for reverse

7:34 PM
yeah Ive never used one of those so not really something I care about. I'm sure its nice but bit more than we need

I know if I did more video that one thing ont eh Pros would be a lifesaver
Okay.. not for you then :)

hmm maybe I just don't get the benefit

No hunting and pecking to move back and forard in video
It's like the difference between using a mouse to scroll and a touch device to scroll.. just more intuative. two fingers sliding is just easier than clicking and dragging with a cursor.
But, like all tools, it's a matter of preference

Ah, I'm sure its nice but we always on tight budget. I'm sure my boss would get it if I asked but I always feel bad when I'm pretty sure all of my coworkers think I just sit in the back doing nothing all day

I'm just really bad to talk hardware with :) I'm a firm believer that an extra $100 on hardware will save thousands in man hours working. If it's the right hardware.
II get where you're coming from and understand. I'd shoot for the best you can.. if it's the IP&T small that's still better than soap on a rope

7:39 PM
Yeah I get that manhour part, if I was a freelancer or we were really busy it would make sense. Clearly by the amount of time I'm on SE that isn't the case haha. My boss doesn't like us to be busy at all, he'd rather see us wasting time throughout the day but be happy
I mean right now here's my deadlines: 1 video, due whenever I finish it.

Well must be nice. Never had a boss liek that. Not even my current boss :)
What size screens and how many do you use?

I've got 2. We tried to setup a 3rd but video card couldn't handle it. Think they're 23"

Okay.. How do you anticipate using the tablet? As a replacement for the mouse or just for special things? I use my tablet 100% of the time in all apps.. haven't touched a mouse in years. Some users only break out the tablet when they need it though.

I was thinking only when I need it but guess if I get used to it I could use it more
one second I did a small demo I'll upload to show you

Well if you want to use it on the main screen only when you need it the small will probably be great. If you want to use it on 2-23" screens all the time, you may need a bit larger than the "small". Which is why I ask.
I have 3-30" screen. the small would never work for me. The medium works, but it's a little problematic. Medium would be fine if I just used it on the main screen when I needed it, but not for navigating all 3 screens. I have a large which is perfect. So it depends a bit on how you use the tablet.
I started with a Graphire (yeah I'm old).. moved to an Intuos Small, then a medium, then finally the large. So I've tried a range of sizes I still ahve an I4 small in a laptop bag for when I'm mobile and need it..

7:49 PM
I had a Graphire back in the day
How come you don't get a Cintiq if you use it that much? Wouldn't it make more sense?

Then that will be similar in size to the Bamboo small I think
Cintique requires a video connection... I'd need a second card. 2 Video cards in a Mac is a problem
with 3 screens I can run them all off 1 video card today
Of course the new MacPros come stock with 2 video cards... so.. if I ever upgrade I may move to a cintique
and I tend to move back and forth between 2 monitors for panels when working.. the cintiq is really just a single monitor environment. Which is fine for painting, but I do a lot more htan painting

Video is trying to upload, its at 60%
if I didnt have to still buy lots of furniture for my apartment I'd get an iPad and the Adobe Stylus

eh.. to me it's not as handy as the Inkling :)
And nothing beats a pad and pen with a scanner yet.

Inkling?

I can doodle for hours with a pad and pen, then scan the good stuff. I only get 1/2 to 1/3 done with the ipad. The inkling is great, but doesn't always pick up everything and requires attention to angles when drawing

8:00 PM
Not sure what Inkling is, looking it up now

oh.. they quit making it :)

found a Wacom Inkling stylus mentioned on Google but dont see it. Ahh thats why then

It's handy, but requires care when drawing so it picks up everything.
I'd bet more people went the iPad route than tried it which is why they discontinued
Lets you draw on paper and it tracks your movements

ah. I just wouldn't mind iPad because I don't have a tablet at all

If I were getting my first tablet..... I'd try a Samsung Note at a store first.. it has a pressure sensitive wacom stylus with it.
The only reason I don't have one is the contract really.

8:04 PM
I did that in Photoshop using Mouse and Sketchman Screen Recorder 2.0. But had to have the 7ft ready to go on extra layer because couldn't write it well enough

Yeah the Bamboo will be great for stuff like that. It
and the ability to rotate the canvas in Photoshop while you draw is fantastic as well.

And other videos will be even more writing based as we get into more technical stuff like configuring the equipment
Bamboo or Intuos Pen & Touch?

Really anything where you have to hold down a mouse button and move is so much easier with a tablet. I meant IP&T.. just not keeping up with product names :)

Well I'm also left handed which doesn't help because I can't use mouse with my left hand at all. Just have gotten so used to using it with my right hand from school and whatnot. So with Tablet I'll use my left hand instead

That'll help a great deal too.
Wacom specifically engineers for left handers.
THere's a pref for "left handed" and the pro tablets can be rotates to use either way

8:10 PM
I need to find a better screen recorder too. This one is pure garbage quality. SnagIt looks promising and is only $50

A lot of 'doze users I know use SnagIt or Camtasia

Once I get a tablet I'll start the SnagIt trial. See if its a noticeable improvement but I think it will be
Thanks for the help. I'll tell my boss the IP&T for $100 is the way to go

Hope you love it :)

How do you get new users to chat on a discussion graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/49241/…

11:14 PM
Without 20+ rep, you need a moderator to get the person room-specific chat privileges.

but @Scott what shape do I draaaaw
ok, thank you for the response.

And, I just got an Intuos Pen and Touch Medium, and it's absolutely thrilling.
I've been practicing doing portraiture of characters in my tabletop RPG.
Current work in progress:
Coming from traditional media, it was a bit weird to not be using the pen on the image, but I quickly adjusted and now I rather appreciate not having my hand on top of my work.
