lol when I answer a PS question without having PS or PS experience

3:44 AM
@ZachSaucier the shift key trick works for changing properties of multiple layers, such as font, size, color, etc. But it wont' work for actual text content. So, your'e correct for the most part. Your second option is the only way to alter text content across multiple layers.

Alright, thanks :)

You don't need to click the Text tool for either method though.

@Scott meaning users can hold shift and click on a text element instead?

and there's no Select > Similar layers option in my versions of Photoshop. Am I missing it?

I have no idea :P
was an old vid

3:47 AM
Yeah You can hold shift and click the text layers. Or Command/Ctrl to highlight multiple text layers in the layer panel.

maybe you should just answer instead... lol
deleted my answer

You're basically correct. I think it's jsut terminology....
Leave it... here's how I'd edit....

I was just curious how good of an answer I could give without using PS... and putting minimal effort xD

If you need to change the text *contents*, you can highlight the text layers in the Layers Panel then click Edit -> Find and Replace Text to change the text content for all of them at once.

If you only need to change text properties, you can highlight all text layers by holding the Shift key then click. Then do the property changes that you need to do.
-------------------------
It's a good answer. Just terminology, that's all.

kk, if you say so, boss
cool talk on programmatic art stuff

8:16 AM
So I was watching "The Gambler" with Mark Wahlberg. The only real decent part of the entire film is when he's giving a lecture in his class. He plays an English professor who apparently wrote a best selling book at one time.
His speech (I'm paraphrasing) goes on about how everyone can accept without hesitation that they aren't destined to be a professional athlete. They can recognize the lack of ability early and just deal with the fact that they aren't good at basketball, or football, or whatever and move on. People realize that things like athletics take some natural inclination or ability to be successful at.
Yet at the same time this same self-awareness is never applied when people want to be writers. They all think they can be good at it. And they struggle and struggle and struggle in the face of all odds rather than merely accept that they do not have the natural inclination to write well.
However, it's no different. Your'e either good at something or not. The ability to be self-aware and not waste years struggling with something you simply aren't good at is a precious thing to have, but few do.
So while I'm listening all I can think about is how this relates to any creative field.
Everyone and their cousin thinks they can be an actor, or a designer, or an artist, or an illustrator. Few can actually accept that even though they have taken courses, learned all they can learn, they still do not posses that inherent something which makes them good or successful.
I mention this becuase this question reminded me of it... graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/50277/…
I know I am just horrible at some things so I don't do them. And I know I think I'm good at things I probably am not. The human psyche is a funny thing.

I guess it comes with the illusion we are bred on that you can achieve anything if you just work hard enough

In short.. if you suck... wear it proud and move on... and I type this as much for myself as anyone else :)

It's a fallacy. You can achieve greatness ifyou try hard, yes, but not just in anything you choose.

I wonder. When I was in school, instructors made it a solid point to tell everyone that only 1 in 5 students may get jobs. And out of those students only 1 in 10 may be successful. I wonder if they still do that in schools.
Well people are good at things or they aren't.

That would be... Healthy.

8:27 AM
Everyone has natural abilities in different areas. But we aren't good at recognizing the areas we should just accept we suck at :)

Accepting weaknesses is not a skill we are taught.
Weaknesses are taboo, so we ignore them instead of facing them.

I know. I find it kind of funny. The "you can do anything" is somewhat destructive overall.

Agree.
Hence the wild growth of 'disorders' like ADHD, dyslexia, discalculia (sp?), all are just rugs to sweep our weaknesses under.

I guess that Gambler speech hit home because I really wanted to play pro baseball growing up... but was just never good enough.
Well I think big pharma makes up things so they can drug you half the time
Some are real and legitimate, but others are just for prescriptions
There's no more ADHD now than there was when I was growing up.. but there's WAY more prescriptions for it now
anyway.. sorry for the rant :) 1 am here and .. well... slow day :)

No prob at all :-)
Read succinct comic about Ritalin just yesterday. The moral was that the stuff evens out all emotions, not just hyperactivity--just like big phatma wants it: docile consumers, all of us.

8:43 AM
yup... doped up fear nation :)
easier to control that way.

Oh and fear is one of the best drugs available.

Yup. That's why I don't "watch" the news. I'll read it.. but never watch it. It's all designed to scare the public.
anyway... I'm off. Have a good day Vincent :) I know you're probably just getting started :)

3 hours later…
11:45 AM
@Vincent @Ryan Because you were listening to my story about PeoplePerHour and the scammer... I have news: The scammer re-activated her account, just to leave me a 1 star review. I have contacted the site yet again, and if they don't remove it and penalize the scammer I will take the whole thing to Reddit and to any other place I can find. I'm pretty confident I can get it to #1 google page. Not a happy day, yesterday.

12:01 PM
@Yisela wtf
the frakking nerve
thanks @Scott :)
@Yisela I suppose her account is still in the red? Or did she re-suspend it?

12:49 PM
hi!
@Vincent she's still online, but by deleting her account she avoided me chasing down the invoice

HAPPY FRIDAY!@

hi Matt!

@Yisela that's...cheap

meh
I only went back to those portals because of the situation, I knew they were trouble
I need to focus all my efforts into finding a full-time position

no more freelance?

12:57 PM
if I keep insisting, I'll keep getting screwed :)
@Matt well, I have to eat, but I will drop it as soon as I find something else
at least no more through scam portals
they are all the same

what are all the same? sounds like you're going through a rough time, hope it gets better..

it sucks because I don't speak german yet, and remote work is not easy to find
@Matt freelance portals, all fraud

glad Ive never tried one, lol
so they arent gonna help you get paid?

no, that's done
I will write an article about them, post it on reddit, mention the scammer's name and forget about the whole thing

two thumbs up there.. just make sure to let us know first ;)

1:01 PM
no positive response from PPH at all?

no response at all
"Nothing but a bunch of con artists" sounds quite accurate
we should start our own freelance portal for ethical people
I withdrew all my money, as soon as that is done I will leave the site

ouch those reviews

I don't understand companies like that

don't forget to remove the hire button from your site

yeah, doing that NOW

1:06 PM
But you are saying, there is no good freelance portal atm?
if that is the case, then that's a huge gap in the market

I tried the three biggest ones... freelancer, PPH and elancer

F5... aaand it's gone :D
all three suck, apparently

freelancer was the worst by far, followed by PPH. Elance was a weird experience
I didn't get to test their support... I was hired by a guy who shared his desktop on skype and had a collection of (I suspect underage) porn
I ran away

(I tried to take a screenshot in case my suspicion was correct, but he closed the folder too fast)
the world is full of creeps and scammers

1:09 PM
:O
eew

@Yisela I have the domains, lol

@Yisela I feel for you :(
all we need now is a few designers to design it, and a couple whizzkids to code it... oh wait.

I've enjoyed doing user interviews for my app. They're even more helpful than I thought they would be
I definitely think the app can fit a need if done right

@ZachSaucier nice! how / where did you do them?

@Vincent I have the logo!

1:16 PM
I've just been doing them with people here at uni because that's the scope I'm starting with to get the format of the app down

oh heavens, I thought I'd have had the worst experience with the super-cheap hosting companies... but I now have a customer with a full-service provider that is worse than I ever experienced
how hard is it to make an (S)FTP account and have it work?

haha
what's the company's name?

CC Group
it's Dutch

I started working with A Small Orange, which @Scott recommended, and it's quite good. Excellent customer service

@Yisela you know this really isn't such a bad idea

1:28 PM
it's on my provider blacklist as of today

I've been using A Small Orange for years now. I recommend it to anyone I help

oh, I have a few suppliers I really like as well

Vincent's little dark list of sinners

my own hoster is great. I can even call them and not speak Hindi

A Small Orange is all domestic USA support. That's what I tell people is worth the price. That and their CPanel isn't stuffed with advertisements for extra features

1:29 PM
no seriously, I have a list in my office of hosting providers I refuse to deal with, and a longer one of... shady ones

that's good

lots of those very cheap providers do things that I think should be outlawed

@Ryan every time I contacted them, they answered in less than 10 minutes and helped me instantly

a few months back, my customer asked why I installed a redirect to get to her /wp-admin

what you mean installed a redirect?

1:31 PM
I hadn't done anything: the hosting provider had just set up the redirect to protect from brute force login attacks

@Yisela yeah they're amazing. When I first started they weren't big enough so they didn't have 24 hour support. But it was still worth it to me talking to someone that spoke English and didn't read a script. At the time you usually spoke to the same person too

@Matt if you went to /wp-admin to login, you got a white screen with black Times New Roman text telling you to click this link to proceed to your login page

Anyone ever looked at Swift?

er.... thats stupid
@Ryan I have

effective protection from most simple brute force attacks, but not if it's without informing the custmer

1:32 PM
i usually do a redirect on all with an exclusion of an IP range.

@Matt if I were to want to learn iOS development should I learn C# or go straight into Swift you think?

have you ever touched either?

I've been learning Java for android but wondering if I should learn iPhone/iPad instead
nope! never touched either one, don' even own an iPhone or iPad

start with C then migrate

C!? Or you mean C#?

1:35 PM
C#

okay thanks. Need to decide before I get too far along. I like Android but girl own's iPhone and my end goal is to work with iBeacon so might make more sense to switch

1:58 PM
have any of you guys done anything in the Stolowe Mountains?

2:12 PM
@ryan.. Im surpised you didnt vote to close that question for technical support

@ZachSaucier is that Poland?

nope, never been in Poland even

2:38 PM
anyone looked into speed reading?

not very much, I read fast enough

I scan fast enough :P

that doesnt help me unless I can read your mind

and... no, I feel rushed often enough as-is

looking to excel my code learning but other than typing what they are doing I want to read more on theories but dont want to take forever

2:41 PM
@Matt what sort of theories?

a few abookapart books

IMO finding good resources is the important thing

still, a good source will be well documented

2:55 PM
sup @JohnB

hello

hey @JohnB

how is everyone

a bit at wit's end about some hosting provider stupidity and non-communication. You?

so who chose the hosting company?

2:58 PM
happy that my systems came back online after a power outage last night
always a bit of uncertainty there

@Matt my customer. they have been taking care of all their web needs for years
power outage? does that happen often?

all those techno places up there ;)

not often enough for me to have faith that everything will automatically boot back up and launch what is needed :P
it was an odd event, sometimes we lose power from nasty weather but that wasn't the case last night. Dunno what it was

you getting snow this weekend?

rain/snow mix apparently

3:02 PM
ya us too...

hm. seems weird, there was a huge power outage in all of a Dutch province this morning, and half the country grinded to a halt -- we are so not used to large outages. sounds like you are bit more prepared

do you have above ground power lines?

some
mainly major lines. within cities all is underground

In my area they're all above ground as far as I know. And trees have a high tendency to fall on them during harsh weather

that doesn't help.
the aboveground lines we have are so huge that trees got nuffin' on 'em.

1 hour later…
4:38 PM
Would it be irritating if I add at the end of an answer the steps on how I found the same answer using Google? Trying to think of a way to educate help vampires.

I think it would be a good idea
gotta go, have a good weekend!

you too!
something like this?

How did I come up with this answer?

- When to Google.com (any other search engine would work).
- Searched for "adobe illustrator customize arrowhead". The less and more precise the terms, the better.
- Scanned down the list of results and noticed one of the links was from adobe.com. Clicked on it because, if the answer is in adobe's help files, then there is no point in searching around anymore.
Maybe we could make it more general and create is as one of the snippets.

@cockypup im for that.. I may even give you a bounty =P
so you're saying that a majority of the questions can be found by a google search!! I am outraged!

hehe. OK, I will add it to the arrowhead answer and see if the OP snarks back or not. I am afraid of the reaction "I know how to use Google".
well, innocent me is starting to consider the fact that people might not know how to use Google.
just a wild idea... haha

4:58 PM
ha
atleast its friday!

@Matt Which answer? (I know it makes me sound worse haha)

no biggie

sorry, I was focusing on being a smartass explaining people how to use Google.

hey at least you admit it!

yeah, comes with age. I will have a t-shirt made...

5:31 PM
so I tell someone to code in the browser.. yet I just found myself designing a mockup with color in Illustrator... lol

1 hour later…
6:36 PM
Really want to move this to chat graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/50291/… But she doesn't have enough rep... and I really don't think the question is worthy of up voting :)

6:48 PM
she is just a hatchling, so she is not allowed to chat, that sucks : )

yeah 3 rep :) and because of that the system doesn't even offer to move to chat.

I guess the rule protects the chat from these kind of hatchlings : )

Missed the (removed) :)

was a link to the image haha

oh :)

6:56 PM
fun, I get to play CSI today. A customer claims she did not post an order herself but over the phone. And that we stole her credit card number... sure... do you want fries with that?

Be sure to super size it :)

haha for sure. and hand deliver it for free to her address in file, which, oh surprise, matches the area where the IP the order was posted from is registered.

@cockypup do you play Hearthstone?

@Ryan Nope. Looks cool though!
I used to play Magic online, not very good at it though, too gullible : )

I tried Hearthstones.. just too slow for me .. I need more instant gratification out of a game :)

7:07 PM
Hello! I made a logo for the first time. does it look ok? scontent-ams.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/…
Hi again @Scott

@Stacey no

Hi @Stacey I remember you this time :)

@Ryan why not

What's the logo for? I get "haunted house" from it maybe

haha it's a church

7:09 PM
Nothing is aligned correctly so its jarring to look at. I also doubt the thinner lines will print very well at small sizes

Ohm, then things need to align better and be more consistent. The angles between the roof and building and building/ground make it seem "wonky" like a haunted house

I understand why you say it looks like a haunted house

For a church everything should be precisely aligned. But, just my opinion.

You understand what we mean by alignment?
@Scott one that I share

yes. the anges aren't at 90 degrees and nothing is parallel/purpendicular
it's all odd angles relative to eachother

7:10 PM
exactly :)

it goes beyond that. odd angles and off center too

Does it look OK is a wide question though... did you mean "do you personally like it, please critique" or did you mean "does it work as a logo"?

that's it in context
It's my first logo so I'm okay with anything vaguely better than medicre

Yeah fix the angles and maybe not use black. That would help.

I chose black because it's going to be printed on black and white
I'm just checking that it's not like a huge design epic fail

7:13 PM
I'd lighten it up though. Add more windows maybe?

ok

Stacey, do you have a photo of the church? Cause this doesn't look like most church buildings either. But if this is how the building looks than the target market might relate better than we are.

but personal professional critique is good too. I want it to be as good as possible

I think just the solid black an the off angles make me think "haunted house" :) Or the Addam's Family home :)

But there's still some flat-out flaws with it

7:14 PM

@cockypup beat me to it

haha

if you meant these differences (I highlighted in red) then they need to be more exaggerated. If you mean it, make it evident. Otherwise, I would not do it, because the person looking at it would think you were sloppy

I said I'm a noob

7:15 PM
I'd also use a serif font... more elegant and friendly than the sans-serif.

Oh don't. A logo should never use clip art.

^ that man speaks the gospel

what's the other solution?

Draw it.

7:17 PM
draw the building
simplified
forms, volumes, anything

my drawing ability is nonexistant

well, that is great : ) we all are noobs in something until we do it many times. we are just shredding because you asked for opinions : )

@Stacey I'll take a stab only because I want a break from video production, and can play with the tablet I just got more
(I'm not an illustrator either)

also, to go on @Scott's line of thought, if you make the church wonky, that might imply "unstable" which can be exaggerated to imply "happy, thriving, energetic" like "look how fun of a community we are that even our building is all jumping and happy, our windows are uneven and our roofs are raising" but you have to make it clear for the viewer. Otherwise people will think you missed it.

@cockypup that's fine. I don't mind it being shredded. I appreciate the input
yes. good point
What if instead of having all the black 'filled in', I open it all up so it's just outlines
and obviously not all wonky
then it's more open

7:26 PM
Very quick mock up....

oh wow
that's pretty cool

when you have a chance, take a look at this checklist. gistbrands.net/10-must-have-logo-criteria

It's rough... and should be way more precise than I drew. But that, to me, is a "lighter" image and more representative without using clip art.

a logo is quite a tool. it is more than an illustration. it is perhaps one of the hardest things to design.

I think my issue is also that I'm not that great at using the tools

7:29 PM
what are you using?

so I can see in my head what I want but getting it into the pc is hard
gimp
is that bad?

not at all. It just takes practice

mind you, Gimp is more of a raster graphics program, isn't it? like Photoshop

raster is the opposite of vector, right?

yup
raster works pixel by pixel

7:32 PM
okay. then yes. it is. I don't know if it has any vector-specific functionality. although I'm not humongously familiar with gimp

makes more sense now
the small mistakes I mean
they are easier to make on a raster software than on a vector one

I imagine, because then the lines are automatically all straight

how about Inkscape? inkscape.org/en

For something like a personal project and saving money, gimp is fine. And raster may be okay as well for the time being. Vector is better for a logo in general, but depending upon your use, it's not absolutely mandatory. For a personal facebook page. Gimp and raster is fine.

inkscape looks cool. it has a linux version too which is nice

7:36 PM
interesting, this church has no cross...

@cockypup yes that was challenging but here's my approach. its quite different and quick mind you

Oh, I like that

I looked at a few elements of the building that I liked and focused on those. especially the almost triumphal arch they had going on the sign and the general form of the building. Then started adjusting

err.. yeah I guess they are :)

since there's no cross I focused on the triumphal arch and the window form as basis more than the building. Just a quick idea for you to consider instead of something so literal

7:41 PM
still has the "pointing up" idea, which is cool
it is an "interdenominational" church, so it would be cool to express that in the logo. that will take time to think...

Oh what a can of worms is opened when asking a group of designers about a logo :)

@cockypup it's not really designed to be a church building, it's a community hall
no need to feel obligated to design anything for this! I know your time is valuable

<--- terrible logo designer, you probably shouldn't listen to this guy. Seriously.

eh.. we're just the type of people that are accustomed to throwing down ideas so... well... it's not unheard of to get samples when asking designers about a logo :)
we're used to brainstorming visually, that's all :)

that's my attempt at cleaning up the lines
it's still all closed
and I didn't know how to get the path right

7:46 PM
definitely an improvement, I'd lose the lines on the door

Yes. that is definitely better

I realised I need the lines separating the roof and the ground from the main body otherwise it's just one blob

text could be a little to the left too I believe, and larger

okay

8:06 PM
@Ryan my very crude (and slightly cheese) attempt to express "interdenominational", "church" and suggest the shape of the building. based on Ryan's.

I like it! Very modern. Maybe play with font or at least the kerning on the H but the shapes are great
And @Scott will approve because its less phallic and more boobage

haha what does boobage mean?

reminiscent of female shapes
haha
@Ryan yes, kerning is all messed up : (

8:27 PM
@cockypup would it be a bad idea to combine the two? Or would that not work? the hands coming around the building (where the word switch currently is)?

you can always try. feel free to use them. mind you, I would suggest to keep it simple. think about it this way: if you are driving by and look through the window and see a logo, you should be able to recognize the logo in very short time you have to look at it. it is not only an illustration, it should be a very concise and memorable one
@Stacey The illustration is looking better! Now it does not look sloppy at all.
Now I would think about rhythm. For example, the steps up the hill. If they were music and they would have rhythm, it will be all wonky right? The first 3 lower ones will go smoothly but the last to will go out if time or something. Maybe too late. Maybe too loud. The eye does the same thing. Starts going up the hill and then stumbles up the last two steps. I would try to make the path smoother and friendlier for the eye.

8:48 PM
And I am gone for the day! Gotta bake a poppy seed loaf for another church : )
@Matt Wow, it worked. The OP did not get mad.

see ya!

The reason why I did the steps like that is because the ground closer to the building is flatter than the first few stairs which are much more steep. Is it necessary to convey that kind of detail?
