5:36 AM
any indesign users here?

5:59 AM
@LWTBP very scarcely. There are others that use it much more than me that hang out in chat, though

2 hours later…
7:36 AM
No problem, @JohnB

3 hours later…
10:22 AM
@LWTBP regular ID user here. If you're still awake, shoot!

3 hours later…
1:24 PM
Hello everyone!
@LWTBP what do you need in InDesign?

1:34 PM
hey @Ryan

@Vincent hey how are you?

quite ok, thanks. you?

happy to be alive! crazy holiday drivers. Feel like Matt might be around too, he said he was going somewhere, can't remember if it was here or not

argh, already? Is TG tomorrow or Friday?

tomorrow, always Thursday

1:43 PM
ah, ok. I'm sorry, I'm not well-versed in all aspects of American culture :)
have you got any plans yourself?

in Florida - even before Thanksgiving we get "snowbirds." Old retired people and just general wealthy people that can afford to migrate south for the Winter
Just spending time with my mom, nothing too special

special isn't necessary to have a good time :)

and there you have it - coworker was in an accident in her new car last night..

ouch!
I thought you Americans were such relaxed and civil drivers?

funny man today

1:50 PM
no, seriously. Everyone I met who has been driving both here and in America says that you guys are way better in traffic than we are
true, I never met an American who has been driving in the Netherlands, only the other way around

Maybe in some parts of America but definitely not in Florida.
I got cut off like 4 times yesterday. All I could think was -- its raining and the holidays, can't we all just get home safely :(
(You know the slang "cut off"?)

yeah, it translates directly
nasty :(

2:05 PM
I guess you'll be holding down the fort the next few days, gonna be quiet
@ZachSaucier morning Zach, how goes it?

pretty dang well if you ask me
time off from school is great
get things done while relaxing and also get to hang out with people/play sports

@Ryan will try. I won't be here on the weekend, either
hey @Zach

And I guess Yisela will be here as well.

ah I might be on actually, got to get some side work done for my dad finally tonight / tomorrow so he can pay me
also need to start building a new personal website for myself to find more side jobs although I think I already made up enough money to cover the difference of my new place

2:12 PM
ah, nice. Time for a personal portfolio is good, I'm jealous :)

2:32 PM
guess you don't hae anything planned for Thanksgiving, @Yisela? :)

hi!
No, never ever celebrated thanksgiving
but I was thinking of cooking some turkey-inspired dish

oh, that's a nice one

I'm looking at the watermarking answer you showed me
and I'm not sure if citing so much as quote is ok

Strange graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/42745/… just edited the question to include colors - not sure why when it doesn't change anything

@Ryan maybe he doesn't know?

2:39 PM
@Yisela I'm not, either, so that's why I flagged it
have to admit that I didn't check the source site, tho. Maybe they have a copyleft statement / license as well

@Yisela but why wouldn't he try one of the two solutions provided before editing the question?

he didn't upvote either, maybe he just came back, edited and then read the answers
@Vincent related meta post: meta.stackexchange.com/a/156651/171926
their point is valid: we try to create original content
but there are no rules, I think, about how much to quote: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/help/referencing

Anyone decent at illustrator on?

@Ryan somewhat

Something I've always wanted but never really looked into - say you have a square and want to make it a trapezoid. Select two points on the same side and instead of moving them the same direction you want to move them opposite direction (to make bigger or smaller). Is there an elegant way to do this?

2:49 PM
@Ryan Sorry, my illustrator broke when I upadted to win 8.1

@Yisela then I guess this instance is pushing things, but ok otherwise. If the orignal writer objects, we'll see then.
ooh, nice Q

like scale works, but a way to do it without going into menus

@Vincent there should be no harm for him, because his text is between quotes in the HTML, and there is a link to his blog...

agree
@Ryan I don't think it's possible, but you might want to wait for @Scott to pop by. Usually when I think things are impossible in Ai, he grasps solutions out of thin air

They are apparently bored over at the Mathematica site. Possibly NSFW mathematica.stackexchange.com/questions/66538/…

3:03 PM
facepalm
how may upvotes?

@Ryan doesn't the free transform tool do this? Or am I not understanding?

@JohnB How does it do it?
@JohnB This actually seems fine to me, interesting even if I understood the math behind it

@JohnB I like the first answer's buttocks
oh my, I knew it... I'm using a tracking app for my freelance work, and it takes screenshots every 5 minutes or so. I opened that maths question for 4 seconds. And it took a screenshot of it -.-

@Yisela cheeky :/

xD
fant-ass-tic

3:10 PM
its quite the bummer, though

(And I SWEAR that URL is randomly generated...)

haha nice url. And yes, what did you hold down for that?

ctrl alt shift

ahh thanks, tried a few combinations but couldn't find it - probably could've looked at the shortcut panel had I thought about it
dont really use illustrator all that much but drawing some cars at the moment

yeah I think they set out to make the free transform tool as least intuitive as possible
I usually forget which key combo I need to use and just cycle through them all until it's the right one :)

3:20 PM
okay opinion time - neither one is 100% done but which direction to you all prefer

Well the cars are nice but I wouldn't have any clue that there's a distinction between visitors and registered without the labels

@Ryan love it!

thinking maybe a mix would work even better

yeah I like the mix

3:27 PM
heres the original that I'm updating
lol wasn't hard to improve!

@Ryan You can scale anchors relative to other anchors.....

@Scott yeah I know if I want to open the scale tool. Was looking for a way to do it without going into the scale menu. Alt+Shift+Ctrl should work according to John

yeah with the Free Transform tool you can click a corner, THEN hold down Command/Ctrl-Option/Alt-Shift and THEN drag outward.

@Ryan nice images!
I did a double take on the guardhouse, though. Thought it was a cardboard box

eh y'all are too nice. They're not exactly illustration masterpieces, but I think they get the job done
well I added a label to that too, but if you have a suggestion I'm open to it:

3:43 PM
They are nice but that green car's about to take out the arm!!!!!!!!!! He's moving too fast!!!!

25mph!

just kidding
Then he'll loose an arm using the reader! :)

I considered shortening the arm to make it look like its already opening but it doesn't work in top view well enough. Just ends up looking short

yeah I'm just kidding. It looks good

it emphasises the reader being faster than a guardhouse quite nicely

3:47 PM
I really like, the only thing I'm not fully sold on is the blue truck's front, I think because it reminds me of something alive, the mirrors look like ears and it even has little eyes on the glass :)

I woudl probably square off the cab of the blue truck a bit myself. But it doesn't look "alive" to me :)

I still think it's really good, but caterpillar
offtopic and probably NSFW but SO MUCH FUN youtube.com/watch?v=cHhOeoSHs-4

Hey we legalized it here now... waiting for the store to carry it :)

4:06 PM
Man. I love clients that continually blame ME for a problem with THEIR third party web crap.

third part web crap? Is that like a web app left on the front porch?

yeah... :) Mostly silly shopping cart sites and mail list managers. If their forms dont work it's NOT my fault. And all they do is blame others.

there's people getting by on blaming others their whole life. They're called politicians :)
...or am I confusing them with sales people now? hm....

er... same thing :)

4:35 PM
:)
I got ONE good client! Hurray!
after months of following silly commands (make that bigger! make that red!) I was finally contacted by someone who lets me try stuff and can pay for it

\o/

let's drink

Congrats!

thanks
can I show what I'm doing?
when you can do anything you get stuck in 3 minutes :D

4:51 PM
Sure
I mean, I can't actually give you permission - I'm not the client. But I'll look at whatever you want to share lol

oh, yeah, please.

it's ok, I'll delete the images afterwards
almost done, hang on
(I didnt do anything to the top bar, menu or horrid tab)
(and it's not centered)
Only conditions are that I need to keep the tiles, and I can't change the layout
main concerns of mine: colors and type. Cant figure out a color for the banner, and the fonts are all weird

5:16 PM
I dont follow the differences very well. They all look nearly identical other than some very very minor tweaks :\

ouch, there's WAY too many typefaces in the original

I want to murder that "smart is the new pretty"

the Arial(?) in the top bar is heavily clashing with the Myriad you use in the body :/
or is it Open Sans?

Segoe UI
the top menu is definitely going, but for now I'm only redoing tiles and banners

I like your second option better.
Is there a reason for the red? The green, blue and grey are from the logo, but the red....?

5:20 PM
no reason for it
could be any color

ok, just curious :)
really prefer your icons over the current ones :)

thanks (rendering is off though). I'm trying one more thing I'd like to show you, if you have 3 minutes aprox

sure

ughh
sadness parade

why?
looks quite ok to me
it's a bit of a pity you can't bring Nyala back anywhere, but it looks quite nice

5:33 PM
that's Agfa Rotis Sans
the one in the logo you mean?

--.-- my font-id skills suck today
yeah
glad I never answer Qs about it

haha
rotis is not that popular I think

msry, I gotta go...

see you! thanks!!

o/ o\ o/

6:11 PM
@Yisela are you still around? Got a second for an opinion?
Oh, I actually meant to offer me an opinion. But that is looking noticeably better
Not sold on the clock for Dictation. The icon might be better than the original, but still not clear why its that icon at all when it doesn't talk about speed or efficiency or anything

you are right
(about the clock)

I'm not sold on how the fence and slide gate are looking. Trying to figure out some other solution that looks industrial / commercial without well being bad. Cause ^ is bad

what does it have to represent?

Did you see the streetview I just deleted?

I was away when you explained for the previous one
yes

6:18 PM
Or you mean your clock?

but I mean, you want to represent the game slides to the side?

Prefer it being something iron and fence. Barrier arm is easier to understand but not as effective since this will be for commercial / industrial usage

I'm lost on the dots and the two perpendicular yellow lines

The yellow lines are lane separators here

I see the yellow lines on the map

6:20 PM
The dots are for the iron fence but they don't look good

ahhhh right
does it have to be realistic for this particular fence?

Nope
I'm thinking maybe make it a wall instead?

so the focus is on the gate
my focus keeps going to the yellow lines

no the scene is the focus, our product in that google street map is the white box thing on the right side
(which isn't illustrated yet but will be and labeled Reader)

I think if they were more opaque or something like that, then I'll focus on a different element
like the box
the box being black and the fence thingie being black makes them look like they belong together
maybe the box could be white and a little moved to the left, instead of aligned with the green
and I'd try making the lines semi-transparent, just to see what they look like

6:24 PM
i just did the lines and you're right they do look a lot better

now I see the truck and the gate, although the box in my mind is still connected to the fence and the gate somehow, but (this is my brain talking) it could be one of those boxes train track barriers have to counter-weight
and a silly observation but nonetheless: in the fence, there is less space between the circles that go vertically than between the last one and the one in diagonal

hmm thanks for the suggestions
Think its starting to look a lot better, not done yet, but better

6:52 PM

sorry, I was away
that looks great!
How big is it going to be? does the box label need to be larger?

yeah I'm trying to figure out a way to scale it without losing context now

on the right (on grass) and in white so it looks like it belongs to the box?
love the new walls and barrier

Its too hard to read in white or I would have

because now the gate goes over the fence, it looks really gate-y and good

6:56 PM
its actually closer to the box though, I removed the company name which is above Reader

7:09 PM
dinner time! see you!

have a good weekend!
