12:01 AM
haha - yes, I know... i get bursts of "lets plow through some stuff and see if it could be a bit better"
..ten a day
:D
...at some point you guys won´t have to approve my rampages, though. you are free to feel good about that :D

10 hours later…
9:54 AM
Hello. I am learning CSS and have some basic questions. What would be appropriate place to ask about CSS?

10:38 AM
@Boris_yo ..depends. Can you give us an idea here? You can always create a question, try to be spesific, and you should get constructive feedback if your question is not suited.

3 hours later…
1:41 PM

?

External CSS file is responsible for color of strong tag presented in source code's DOM. It changes all strong tags color to red. What can be done to change color of individual strong tag?

well I don't really grasp because of that GUI instead of just a .CSS file but you should use an identifier
or lose the <strong> entirely and just use <span class='n'> <span class='n' id='colored'> type of deal
so in that case .n { font-weight: bold; } #colored { color: red; }

@Ryan Which I can attach to different text I want to be colored?
CSS are characters currently that have stong tag and all are colored red. I want to make "C" colored blue, "S" colored green and another "S" colored purple.

1:56 PM
then what you need is not id but class

The source code for it is like:

<strong>C</strong>ascade
<strong>S</strong>tyle
<strong>S</strong>heet
I would like to attach identifier for each tag and control its color through external .css file.
Maybe easier would be to just add <font color=*****> to each inside source code HTML? Don't know what would be more effective...

okay so do <strong id='blue'>C</strong> then in your external css you need to create #strong { color: 'blue'; }
never use <font color=' '> unless its for email newsletter

@Ryan Because it increases code to content ratio?

You might want to work through these, I think they will be of a lot of help to you and they're free

2:01 PM
try codecademy. its a bit more beginner friendly because you can do it all in browser

@Ryan Do you know JavaScript?

not really, I barely know CSS
you probably should be asking these things on www.stackoverflow.com we're more graphic designers.

@Ryan When you need to design something, do you have ability to imagine it prior to starting designing it? Envision it?
I thought such ability is main requirement to become graphic designer. I myself cannot envision it seems.

You dont need to be able to envision to be a graphic designer. Rough idea perhaps at best but even that you dont really need

@Ryan I heard that when client requests something good, it is up to graphic designer to quickly make draft of envisioned result.

2:15 PM
You dont need vision though, you need copy or concept.
I suppose if you want to say do you need to be able to envision something its spacing. Then message and how to communicate that message. If the client doesn't supply the copy and you're also writing it then you can start with the copy or the visual but the copy should probably come first for most real jobs

2:31 PM
sup

mornin matt

you having a good friday?

2:47 PM
got coffee and tinkering with audio tracks to get a feel for how to sync them up and think about them

Three main sources of style information form a cascade. They are:

The browser's default styles for the markup language.
Styles specified by a user who is reading the document.
The styles linked to the document by its author. These can be specified in three places:
In an external file: this tutorial primarily discusses this method of defining styles.
In a definition at the beginning of the document: use this method only for styles that are used only on that page.
On a specific element in the body of the document: this is the least maintainable method, but can be used for testing.
So I guess latter overrides former ones and takes precedence?

@Boris_yo yes, basically
this is the one you should focus on "In an external file: this tutorial primarily discusses this method of defining styles. "

@boblet I knew that! I remember viewing webpage in Internet Explorer which displayed neat style that I wanted to use on my WordPress website but after opening same webpage in Firefox, content style was different and less appealing. This was the moment I knew that something else influences webpage style than webpage defaults to...
@boblet Hmm So I can still display my document the way I want user to see using external CSS file? Because I already mentioned that I had same webpage displayed different in Internet Explorer and Firefox.

The difference in browser output is usually a result of extremely poor coding. Extremely so.

Just slap people that still use IE. Its easier.

3:01 PM
@Ryan :D ...i remember with horror the time i had to code with fallbacks for ie6
Not entirely sure what you are asking, @Boris_yo but this is the very basic setup. If your page renders differently in different browsers, then it is due to bad coding, not to where the files are placed in relation to each other (assuming you are opening the exact same file from the same place)

@boblet Fallback? That means for support of older browsers?

Yes. Do not worry too much about that these days; browsers are resonably decent. Explorer6 was an absolute nightmare, but thankfully, it has been chucked on the rubbishheap of technological history.

@boblet I am using Internet Explorer 9 as additional browser. Should I worry about upgrading to 11? I heard not good things about it.

3:18 PM
Hey either of you want to listen to an audio track and give me your thoughts on it?

@Ryan what is it

public domain classical track that i'm thinking of using in trade show promotional video. ive never made a video really and not sure if this is too ... uh stressful i guess
i also found a more modern track that costs $17 but it might be a bit too ... aggressive for some of our older audience
the video is mostly cars going through a gate so its easy for me to fast forward cars and slow down cars and such just trying to find something that wont put people to sleep but also wont be bad

kinda hard to say depending on how the animation ties into the sound

this is the modern one i liked for $17. audiojungle.net/item/constant/…
i emailed audiojungle but havent heard back because im a little put off that it says only 1 product. If I'm buying stock audio I want to be able to use it a few times especially since i need to do at least two videos. one for dealers and one for end users

ok you realize thats not a loop?
Are you or do you have time to edit the audio?

3:28 PM
i have the time, never done it before but i have the time

@ckpepper02 see the new features for the OC 2.0?
@Ryan if you are learning everything I would possibly suggest find the audio you want and build from the audio

thats pretty much what im doing. just not sure if my sensibility on audio is good or not, im a bit tone deaf and by that i mean i am tone deaf
was that Offenbach piece too jarring to you for a commercial trade show video or you think its alright?

the classical to me is a way to bore someone and possibly put someone to sleep
you dont want people to feel bored when at your booth
I would suggest going with the energetic one to add a bit of pep to the video and gain more interest
dont want to put people more to sleep by the other seminar talks already ;)

i was avoiding slow classical but thought that one was fast paced enough to not be an issue, thanks for the second opinion though.

anytime

3:36 PM
this is our current video which is way to slow youtube.com/watch?v=-bHzGOhKVM8

3:47 PM
not bad

thanks, i made it using existing footage just to have something but we're getting permission from dealers to go out and take new video so i have more to work with
hopefully i wont do as cheesy of a job since ive been watching more tutorials and learning everything i can

3:59 PM
try to make a little humor into it so people will remember it

@Ryan H.262 is one of better video encoders I heard.
@Matt_2.1 Humor would be making cartoon presentation to demonstrate how something works.

@Boris_yo um.. no

@Matt_2.1 Okay, how would you go about adding humore to that video?

eh not sure my boss would go for much humor but im making it look a lot nicer...hopefully. Been looking at lower third concepts and trying to figure out ways to make it a bit more professional. Think Ive come up with some professional enough it will look good but easy enough I can execute it

4:03 PM
that has humor

Ya but that was for an end user. And for a product they already know. We need to educate on how our system works and what the benefits are quite a bit more than VW introducing a single new feature

@Ryan Maybe special effects could help? When it says barcode scanning was done without driver's intervention, the screen could focus on barcode and zoom in to display high-definition shot of barcode decal?

@Ryan ohh...
@Boris_yo that would be good

@Boris_yo ya but we dont have those shots yet. That video was just with the very, very little video we already had. I've got plans to get footage just like what you mentioned

@Ryan And make sure to add transitional effect before showing high-definition shot. Something that would impress and keep audience aware?

4:06 PM
how much time do you have on this?

Closeups, different angles, all sorts of things. We're renting the equipment next week. I'm just trying to plan as much as i can in the meantime and learn as much as i can
first tradeshow this will be used at is first week of March

wow.. not far at all

@Matt_2.1 What do you think is acceptable time to accomplish this?

should be alright i hope. im a bit nervous about it but considering last time they went to a trade show (before I worked here) they brought a powerpoint I think itll be alright since anything is better than that
Right now im not purchasing this but feel its a good starting concept that ill be able to execute videohive.net/item/rebrand-tv-broadcast-package/4232509

@Boris_yo he is new at doing this.. also depends on the length of the video
weather for shooting

4:12 PM
Haven't you considered outsourcing?

wouldnt be much reason to have hired me if he wanted to outsource lol
I asked him that when I was interviewed, he wants it all done in house which is why he doesnt mind me taking some time to learn things i need to
our administrative receptionist just finished learning how to make databases for CRM. Its just the type of company, which I definitely appreciate

well that second song is definitely a stark contrast from the first

@Ryan I mean outsource to professional video shooter and editor?

@Boris_yo I know, my response was to that comment

sup john

4:17 PM
Loud music is a must to keep audience aware?

@JohnB morning, and doesnt matter because I just found a different website with good audio tracks that doesnt have anything about "Only 1 use per license" nonsense

sup @Johannes

1 hour later…
5:49 PM
@Ryan I think such is called royalty free. There are royalty free images, videos, music etc.
^ Same website displayed equally in both Internet Explorer and Firefox except with little difference between marked links.

yep, different browsers display fonts differently
Chrome is the worst at displaying web fonts

@JohnB That's because of their individual .css preferences file?
@JohnB Oh really... I thought Firefox is.

@Boris_yo I believe it boils down to the rendering engine. Even if you use a css normalizer, there will still be differences

@JohnB you get that dudes stuff?

@Boris_yo I don't use FF that often, but I wince every time I see a poorly rendered web font on Chrome
I think IE is very good at rendering them
been a while since I've tested
@Matt_2.1 so many other crises have popped up since then...my world is collapsing
how's the pipe situation?

5:58 PM
@JohnB sorry to here that man.
@JohnB exhausted and very depressed

insurance cooperating?

dont know the adjuster hasnt been out.. but theres so much damage and cleanup..

6:24 PM
@Boris_yo Its not about Royalty Free, there's all sorts of different licensing agreements even on "royalty free" materials.

7:11 PM
The tutorial says that first cell in table is bolded. Good. But it also says second cell is monospaced. I don't get why only second cell and not first cell as well? first-child only relates to first cell.

7:27 PM
+ td
monospace is on first-child + td
bold is only on first-child

@Ryan So monospace is on first cell "Prefix" + td (second cell "0001")?

first-child does the first item. first-child + td is like saying 1 + 1 so second item.

In the link i just did change the line "li:first-child " to read "li:first-child + li"
you'll see it goes to the second item

Any td element that is the next sibling of a td element (that is: the next child of the same parent)

7:36 PM
the absolute easiest way to understand these things is to play with them. Css is, to many, surprisingly complex. Fiddling is the business.

It's like specifying next target according to tree? Next node?

your last image seems pretty self-explanatory to me
use js-fiddle and play with small bits of css

Above table example: what if I want to make 3rd cell monospace? first-child+td+td?

try it
did you try it?

What if I want to make 10th cell monospace? Is there a shortcut? first-child+10td? ;)

7:39 PM
nth-child(10)

@Ryan Yes in li:coffee example above. Once I add +li then highlighted becomes second line.

and if you add +li +li then what?

+ just gives specification to last element

like @boblet said you have to practice and try. you cant break anything really - it either will work or it wont

@Ryan 3rd line

7:41 PM
play around in jsfiddle.net try, play, destroy, create. Then, if you get stuck it would be a lot easier to point you in the right direction

I wonder if I could set it all in 1 line of CSS code. i.e give them same class and... hmm
@boblet Okay got it.
@Ryan Is this one for real? It works?

DID YOU TRY IT!?

@Ryan Trying it...
@Ryan You did not specify whether I need to + or not but I tried td:nth-child and succeeded.
So it's tenth but what if I want to try 11th?
Both end with nth

Man you need to stop asking everything and just try things. Or now that someone tells you nth-child you can go to google and look up nth-child

seriously, @Boris_yo I reiterate:
play around in jsfiddle.net try, play, destroy, create. Then, if you get stuck it would be a lot easier to point you in the right direction

7:52 PM
@boblet How do you expect me to come up with abbreviated numbers?

I have no idea what you mean

I am moving too far. Better complete basic course and then enter complex stuff.

its a variable boris, the 'nth' is not specific to the number 10, its not an abbreviation. the nth is simply saying nth. the number in paranthesis is the number
nth-child(11) nth-child(230) nth-child(3) whatever they all work. go to google and look up "nth-child() CSS"

@Ryan Understood.

It's cold and SE took away my hats! Darn them!

8:05 PM
pink earmuffs, oh, how I miss you

ears:nth-child(cold) { background: red; }

elf ears..

@Scott You selected cold and red ears?

nope.. I selected Ears with a child of cold and applied red.

giggle

8:10 PM
Of course.... no such thing actually exists :)

møøhøhøhøhø - surely does

@boblet you been on a power edit nice job

thank you, matt
I have a hang-up on tags
ten-a-day!

@Scott I think that makes less literal sense... but more codical sense.

more specific.. I selected cold but only when a child of ears and applied the red background. nth-child() uses both what's before it and what's in the parenthesis to determine the selector.

8:17 PM
@Scott seen any good movies lately?

Finally saw Carrie.. meh.. s'okay
Saw Gravity.. really good

really?

Saw Escape Plan... not so good
Gravity's pacing is absolutely perfect

thats with sandra bullock right?

yea

8:18 PM
what is the plot?

the ENTIRE reason it works is that it is paced perfectly
Stranded in space
like open water in space
but it moves along so well it's over before you even know it

I saw 2 guns and really liked it

oh, I just saw Shackelton - with Kenneth Brannagh

and it doen't dip anywhere. 2Guns was pretty good
Never head of Shakletown

you guys have GOOD si-fi suggestions?

8:20 PM
IT
the Thing, lol those are classics

polar-expetidion-shackelton

Saw ACOD - Adult Children of Divorce... not a great comedy
Saw Big Ass Spider... about what you'd expect... not fabulous but okay.

im looking forward to watching the guardians with my daughter

Saw Bad Grandpa... it was okay if you liek Jackass stuff
Guardians?

jackass stuff is over done.

8:22 PM
Bad Grandpa actually had a pseudo plot to it though. It's mroe like Borat than Jackass.
But not as funny as Borat

never seen borat

Saw Hobbit 2... HATED how then end it, but great movie overall.
Borat is hilarious.. but not for kids

@Scott isnt that another triology?

Yeah they end part 2 mid-sentence so you HAVE to see part 3

I hate when movies do that. Should start and end well.

8:24 PM
Part 1 ended in a good stopping point.. part 2 ends at the BEGINNING of something

kinda like Matrix 2

yeah
I really liked the movie, but the last 5 minutes just leaves that "WTF!" feeling

"do you know how I know we are not in the matrix? The food would taste better"

no the food would taste like chicken

quote Dr. Cooper

8:26 PM
But if you watch the Matrix.. food would taste bad so that things are NOT perfect.

started watching the two part of Bonnie and Clyde

that was okay. Obviously made for TV but decent

thought since it was on cable we could but within two minutes they introduce foul language

yeah it's adult cable.. but not skinamax
it's violent
not for kids

thought it was going to be more of a history lesson

8:29 PM
you'd think being on the History channel :)

we've been watching cut throat kitchen and that is awesome

Silly 'merican
I dont' do cooking shows :)

@Scott ya go figure

History Channel got all sorts of media flack for JFK which was NOT history :)
Seems they are tryign to branch out into things people will ACTUALLY watch :)

bummer
so how work? still slammed?

8:32 PM
Gravity is definitely worth a watch and okay for kids... although I think kids may be bored by it
Yup still busy. But I'm unmotivated and procrastinating.
get the pipe thing sorted?

not really
will be doing that all weekend and most of next week

yeah insurance claims suck

nothing of sentimental value was damaged but just a lot of work and sadness.

well that's a good thing at least. Sentimental stuff is difficult to lose to things like that.
But I can sympathize witht he effort to replace and recoup losing anything due to water.

good time to remodel the studio.. trying to stay true to my new years and think positive, but I might convert to stand-up desk so I can work more and not get sleepy

8:36 PM
interesting. Stand up desks are handy unless you've got a couple hours to put in in front of one.
I use a stand up drafting table.
but I couldn't use a stand up desk

I hear they are better for you.

Hey hey hey!

sup!

how u doin?

had better days

8:40 PM
it'll get better

@Matt_2.1 So is being a vegan, but I won't be going that route :)

ha ha
hey ck did I ping you on the new OC release?

Oh yeah!!
havent checked it out yet
how is it?

oh man 2.0 comes DEFAULT responsive
supposed to be integrated to HTML5

sweet.. bout time

8:43 PM
ya great time to learn to
AND I have the demo link ;)

yeah, I've been using bootstrap for everything lately
for real?

wonder if the themes will have to be in bootstrap

couldn't imagine that would be necessary.

Can I attach class to <tr>? i.e <tr class="1">

doesn't work everywhere
what are you trying to style?
you would probably be better off assigning the class to your table then calling the tr from your css

8:47 PM
class (or id) names should not begin with a numeral. But some CSS items will work on a table row and some won't. Table rows are seen as inline items, not block elements.

@Scott agreed
@Boris_yo so HTML: <table class="myClass">

Then if <table id="1"> has already ID, can <tr> inside it also have ID? Or ID can be used once per table?

I have <table> and 2 <tr>. I want to control first and second <tr> to make <td> in 1st <tr> bold and another <td> in second <tr> monospace.

CSS: `.myClass { some styling}`
And your TR: `.myClass tr {some specific styling}`
@Boris_yo only one of the same ID can be used

I usually go there when I forget something

8:51 PM
@ckpepper02 Only one and the one which comes last and has highest priority?

I believe yes the one that occurs last

@ckpepper02 I currently have only ID assigned to table and try to call <tr>. I better according to your say replace ID with class to make it work.

what are you trying to make?

yeah depending on what your doing, you can call the TR with CSS also by using nth-child like this SO question: stackoverflow.com/questions/5664773/…

@ckpepper02 nice

8:56 PM
Yes. Made it. I replaced ID with Class and it worked well. It seems ID has to be last in narrowing down to specific elements.

love how you can almost find everything on stack

omg tabs

@Matt_2.1 LOL, yup esp. code related

um... are you not indenting?

8:56 PM
@JohnB What do you mean?

@Boris_yo thats going to be a pain to read when you get to 2500+ lines
looks like notepad++??

Use SublimeText2 - It's awesome for code

@Matt_2.1 Yes, because it is in HTML which should be in CSS for ease and optimal neatness
@Matt_2.1 Yes sir! It is good I think.

I prefer sublime personally
each have their pro and con, but if you are going to be coding often you should get used to tab aka indention.
