12:00 AM
I only buy domains I'll use
lunchtime! be back later

replace that creative with awesome, cya :)

2 hours later…
2:28 AM
Evening

hi Matt!

Did someone say domains!

haha

I bought a few domains just because I liked the name. I still find some that are available.

how many do you have?

2:35 AM
41

if I ever want to register one and it's in your name, I'll haunt you down

About 10 of the domains I want to brand and design. Then sell them off
You buying the beer?
You hate me if I told you I owned something very similar to graphic design.com

haha really?
I hope you sold it expensive then!

No still own something like it. Unused and an idea stored away
How can someone ask such a basic question but present the self almost like a design company?

what are you talking about?

2:45 AM
Someone asked a very basic question on GD I read but their name passes off as they represent themselves as a design company.
Wonder what ever happened to e100.

people come and go, but they usually come back

3:23 AM
Hi @Brendan

good evening!
morning afternoon whatever

haha
afternoon
is there a particular reason for your shade of orange?

well i thought about uploading a photo
then i changed my mind
then it changed my identicon
and i was like, i've always been the tan identicon, i can't be something different!

hehe

so I just went with the orange.

3:25 AM
I see

it's my favorite color
eventually I'd like to do something better, but it's not exactly high on the list :P

I have a mandarine next to my monitor, and it's exactly that same color

haha. this orange is actually a bit bright for my taste, but I like it well enough.

I'll show you

sure!

3:30 AM
tol you
same color

haha yup!
i don't know how you can let that sit there

without eating it?

my coworker gave me one today and it was gone very quickly
yup

I ate the first one, but this survived because I had chocolate

ah. so there is a hierarchy.

3:31 AM
chocolate is always first, doesn't matter what you compare it to
and I was trying white chocolate with lemon
revolutionary!

was that good? that doesn't sound good to me :P

I took the risk, and it was worth it

Citrus + cocoa isn't a good combination for me, and white chocolate has never made me happy in any situation.

interesting! So is whittaker's the local brand of choice?
yeah i really only do white chocolate when it's a "cookies 'n' cream" type of situation

yep, it's quite good
and the lemon part is.. what is it called... it kind of pops in your mouth
I have no idea what would be a word for that, if there is one

3:35 AM
tangy?

no, like.. explosive, for real

haha wow
well thanks to @BESW i designed my first 'okina :D

so, have you been up to anything interesting?

@Brendan Yey!

had a nice weekend at home and in downtown...went to the Steelers' home opener for the gridiron. They stunk but I had a good time with my aunt and then an interesting bike ride home
@BESW not sure how well-aligned it is...i dropped it quite a bit to try and align it with the lowercase 'i' but then it looked silly next to a capital letter, so i had to raise it up again

3:40 AM
Heh.
Well, I'm sure that someone will be pleasantly surprised to find it.

Do you have any experience creating a font? I feel a little aimless with the project...not sure how many glyphs are enough, if I should focus on a second weight or oblique for now, if I should do some alternate glyphs, or make a small cap set...

I do not, alas.

I want to finish something, get it out there, get it in the wild, gain fortune fame and notoriety; but I also don't want to rush something half-baked out.

Understood.
There are perfect projects, and finished projects.

yeah...people say "good is the enemy of great" but I think perfect is the enemy of either of 'em.

3:54 AM
"Art is never finished, only abandoned."

i'd feel better about a sentiment like that if I saw stuff like "Gotham 4.2.3" out in the wild :P
I'd love to iterate, but typography doesn't seem to work like that, unless you go open source

Aye.

welp it's after midnight. time to stop chatting.
good night folks!

see ya!

ttfn
I gotta go to a meeting, meself.

4:04 AM
it's work and work for me

9 hours later…
1:03 PM
morning

1 hour later…
2:21 PM
@Scott why not downvote this if its wrong? graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/16982/…

@Matt_2.0 It's a 9-rep user and we're a beta site.
Give him a chance to fix his error before you slap him with negatives.

not trying to slap anyone. The answer is not correct and should be adjusted or deleted.

It should not be deleted for being wrong.
That's what downvoting is for.
You are absolutely free to downvote him.
But I'm choosing to wait because I think the community should be friendly and inviting, and give a new participant some time to work out the system.

I do not downvote unless I can prove or know the answer is wrong or I have verified it. Scott seems to know exactly what the OP is asking. For me to downvote when I dont know what is going on is wrong

That's sensible.
I don't know why Scott's waiting, but his comment means that there's no danger of someone thinking it's right, and I would choose to wait and see if he edits it in a timely fashion.

2:26 PM
you can remove a downvote at anytime. If I know the answer is lacking I track the downvote and if the question is edited by the answeree to a proper GD structure I will remove the downvote and usually upvote. BUT my experience with small rep people is they answer one question and never return.

To the best of my knowledge you cannot remove a downvote at any time.
You can remove it soon after you made it, or if the person edits the question after you make the vote.
I'd rather not assume that everyone who joins the site won't come back.
(Because everybody starts at low rep.)

didnt mean it really like that
I meant that we do have a large number of people that post once out of random and never return

It's true.
But I'd rather assume each individual is planning to stick around, until proven otherwise on an individual basis.
Even if they aren't, it's nice to have a welcoming atmosphere. We aren't SO, we don't have to deal with massive volumes of questions that drop off the community radar half an hour after they get posted.

agreed

Ultimately this is of course down to personal choice and style, and what each of us thinks is our role and duty as a citizen.

2:30 PM
I would love more people in the design field here

It makes sense to downvote bad answers immediately, and it also makes sense to give people a chance to edit them before giving them that psychological blow--even if you turn the downvote around later, they still got a downvote.
But under no circumstance should an answer be deleted just because it's wrong.

I think what also Im looking at is when new users come and post answers that would have to have been a result of searching or could be spam.

An answer is deleted if it does not fundamentally answer the question.

on questions that are several months old

If an old question's getting brand-new users answering, the response should be to protect the question.

2:40 PM
@Matt_2.0 I did. Someone upvoted it.
Technically what the guy/girl wrote does work. It just doesn't remove the "mesh" aspect.
GD.Se has some users who upvote every new user with a question or answer regardless of content.

That's... nice.

Horrible questions get upvotes and I'm just left scratching my head.

my feeling is that any answer here should be accurate and informative

@Matt_2.0 SE doesn't work quite like that, though.

if the answer is wrong it should be downvoted and removed

2:42 PM
If the community feels the answer is wrong it will be downvoted.

it should.. if someone finds the answer from a search and it is wrong it sets a bad name for GD

But it should not be removed if it is attempting to answer the question.

but from what you are saying it should be because it was a new user. The answer doesnt technically answer the question from what I understand is said by @Scott
you are right. BUT if the question isnt updated within a week it should be since it doesnt provide a worthy answer or it should be downvoted on.

I'm not saying I won't downvote, I'm saying I'm going to hold off on it. And I have no concern that someone will come along and think it's right for two reasons:
First, there are other better upvoted answers on the same page.
Second, there is a comment on the answer saying it is wrong, which should get the viewer to at least consider the idea that it might not be correct.

@BESW ok =)

2:45 PM
GD.SE has a fear of downvoting it seems. My thought is leave all answers (except spam) and let the votes reflect their quality. Even bad answers will bring in SEO traffic.

For a third bonus reason, it is not SE's problem if people don't understand that SE is a community-moderated site and think that it only contains objective truth.
@Scott On rpg.se, a lot of the hesitancy to downvote comes from people not being familiar enough with the system to know themselves if it deserves it.
People who know the system will downvote wrong answers, but people who don't know it are rightfully fearful of just bandwagoning.

yeah I get that. I just don't get the auto-upvotes more than anything.

auto upvote?

I suspect gd.se as a similar challenge because it covers a very broad selection of programs and specialties.
@Scott Aye, that's well-meaning but misguided.

someone (or multiple users) upvote all new users regardless of content.

2:48 PM
I see the pros and cons in that.

7 mins ago, by Scott
GD.Se has some users who upvote every new user with a question or answer regardless of content.

@BESW I do see that

The only time downvotes stick is when an answer CLEARLY doesn't address the question

There's a mystery benefactor on rpg.se who sometimes goes around upvoting answers with 9 votes.
Which is still artificial and contrary to the SE ethos, but at least is less actively harmful.

See... I do get that :) At least that has a purpose... distribute badges.

2:52 PM
I suspect the newb-voting is intended to make them more likely to stay.
But what it actually does is cheapen the voting process and teach them bad habits.

yeah. I understand the (mis)guided logic, but it doesn't help the site at all.

With 9-vote answers, at least 9 other guys thought it was good too, so the one knee-jerk upvote is less of a splash.

HEY~ +1 for your completely convoluted unclear no effort question!
And +1 for that answer which is completely wrong!

I've mentioned the boilerplate greeting comment I use on rpg.se, right?

Interesting.. my iPhone just froze... never had that happen before.

2:54 PM
Prime example is this question. The OP should know better than posting it.

We get a lot of shopping list questions

I didnt downvote even though I think it should be but rather voted to close it. It shows no effort what so ever but at the slight reason the OP could have a valid reason for posting it I do not downvote it.

I voted to close

That's an important distinction to make.
I regularly upvote and vote to close.

I think upvoting is common on some people just because the answer, it is almost like we should upvote them to keep them around.

2:58 PM
Aye, but it doesn't work, and when it does they become Citizens with Bad Habits.

I try to come up with questions based on design just because I am tired of the Adobe questions all the time that seem to be duplicated. BUT then I feel I am annoying people more than helping. Sometimes I debate a break from GD.
so I stay in chat =)

Wow.. first I've seen that "Browser not supported. Please use FireFox or Internet Explorer 9+"

where?

So Safari and Chrome aren't supported? What BS is that? Stupid Infusionsoft

3:14 PM
@Matt_2.0 Mmm. I feel like there's not a lot I can ask that could really be answered by the citizenry here at the moment.

on a different note I watched "Now you see me" last night and it was really good

I hate movies where they change the beginning to meet the end. The ending of that movie was simply insulting.

I liked the movie. I thought it was different that re-done movies

And not nearly enough Isla Fisher in it
:)

3:29 PM
Isla Fisher in a....
thought woody was retired

.. just no movies offered to him :)
Overall ti was good the ending just pissed me off though.. and they left it hanging.. WHAT was the "secret society"?

opening for part II?

maybe, but it wasn't THAT intriguing. :)

ya but I was suprised it was him I thought it was Morgan or the girl.

Star Trek Blu-Ray 3D dvd should arrive today... will be watching that this evening probably. Still haven't seen it. It better be good. I bought the 3D dvd based on your comments :)

3:35 PM
mine????

yeah you and John.. or was it just John?

JOHN. havent seen it yet but will rent it

K John :) Everyone I talked to about it said "You gotta see it" So I just got the 3D disc.
for the full experience

Ill wait for it on redbox
my daughter loved Oz

Oz was much better than I expected

3:45 PM
my daughter for the black and white asked what was wrong with the tv

did you tell her "The world used to be black and white. It wasn't until 1982 when color was invented."
a la Calvin and Hobbes :)

more like you mimi watched tv like this and her eyes got really big then she rolled them
hey whatever happened with that client thing @Scott

He apologized for his insults and we went our separate ways.

oh he acknowledged the insult. Surprised you didnt spin it for new work.

Apparently it wasn't just me. The marketing guy that referred him to me also referred some other vendors. NONE of the referals want to work with this guy

3:49 PM
wait which guy?

Jeff was the client... referred to me by Bob. Bob also told Jeff of 3 other businesses ... No one wants to work with Jeff.

ouch

I think someone read Jeff's emails and said something like, "Dude, these guys know their stuff. How can all 4 of the vendors be wrong?"

blacklisted it appears

I've worked in conjunction with other vendors for years.. marketing., writing, mailing, printing, etc. So we've got this little clique. We all do our job, know what to expect for each other and their are no surprises. This bad client simply slipped through the cracks, but within 2 days we had ALL realized he was a bad client :)
Which.. is why I was laughing so hard at his insulting emails.
You have any luck on searching yet?
Tell teh wife you want to freelance?

3:56 PM
Im still at my job but dont know how long. Got a meeting with a programming buddy on the whole ordeal and advise me on it.

ahh

still want to launch my ideas but the ones that will self run. Got a meeting with a guy I met at a wordpress meeting this week to see if he likes the idea to join with me on the venture.

Office politics just suck. Especially if you aren't of the mindset to play.

just burned out at work. I fell for the "do this to benefit you" bull

I feel ya

3:58 PM
my friend said I played the suckers programming game and was a fool for doing it

well, no one knows until they get caught in it the first time. We've all been taken advantage of at some point
okay... off to breakfast :) See ya later.

later

4:46 PM
@scott, @Yisela, @eric, @dominic, @johnb
says it well no?

5:20 PM
@Scott wasn't me! 3D gives me a headache
but I did like the movie, so it gets my non-3D recommendation at least
send me an invoice for 2/3 of the cost if you end up not liking it, but no way am I paying for that third dimension

6:10 PM
hahaa!
I like number 29
And Star Trek rocks, but it is sort of a Marmite situation I think

7:00 PM
I dont understand how this question can be upvoted but this question gets downvoted.....

I voted to close the first and just commented on the other, neither deserve votes imo
Though the inkscape one is far more interesting and potentially useful
Didn't we have one similar to this recently:

Q: Device template framing

The 8th BitI have recently just created a template, and I would like to show it on my site that it is responsive & fluid. I would like to take a few screenshots of my site, and display them on multiple devices such as PC, iPad, iPhone, etc. Are there any online tools/services that allows me to upload an im...

1 hour later…
8:25 PM
@Matt_2.0 without #5 my day would be too slow :)
@JohnB 3D at home is way better than 3D at the theater :)

@Scott sup scott!

hey matt

do you design forms with regard to human hand writing?

just answered
Interesting way of looking at it

+1 to you sir.. made you look at something differently ;)

8:37 PM
yeah :)

hi all
any ideas on the best way to make white text stand out on highly varying images?
preferably without a background

hi Dominic!

shadow is the norm
or a slight dark outline

Yup.. shadow or black outline

8:44 PM
my technique for that case is: draw a black circle, apply a giant gaussian blur to it

On web though, shadow isn't cutting it

make another layer and move the position while setting the z-index... old school shadowing before css3 ;)

thinking about going for that 'halftone effect' on the images that we had a few qs about
@Matt_2.0 hehe I've considered that but I'm already using a few similar workaround situations so the CSS is getting a bit bloated

bloating heard

the 'halftone' effect definitely makes the text stand out more, but I wonder if it blurs the image too much for the user to even notice it

8:52 PM
someone's been voting duplicates for reopen
did you see them in review?

who are you?
where do you see re-open votes?

in Review

I only voted 2, one was closed as doop of question that was answered for photoshop method but q asked for GIMP
and the other I jus kinda liked lol
but they were all in 'Reopen Votes' already

I'm gunna go through and vote to reopen every closed question :)

there were 21/22, I figured it was the automated community thingy
because a lot of them said they had been edited after being closed

8:54 PM
wow...

but on some there was no edit, even though it said there was... :/

never saw a re-open vote
ok either someone in our warehouse is hitting stuff with the forklift, there is a giant walking around or a really messed up thunderstorm

I could've sworn there was a question just like this recently:

Q: How to recreate devices to present responsive sites

The 8th BitI have recently just created a template, and I would like to show it on my site that it is responsive & fluid. I would like to take a few screenshots of my site, and display them on multiple devices such as PC, iPad, iPhone, etc. Are there any online tools/services that allows me to upload an im...

but I can't find it

there was but I think the OP deleted it

@Matt_2.0 it's past lunch.. someone has bad gas.

8:59 PM
ok then if there's no doop I don't think it needs to be closed

Adam's got more patience than me to spend so much time on a basic - google-worth question

Q: Where is the clipboard on Mac 10.8.3?

jenMany of the online forums say it can be accessed by using the edit menu in the finder. I don't see an edit menu in the finder.
