12:54 AM
hey all

1:42 AM
@voretaq7 I also enjoy a short approach much more than a normal pattern. A possible exception though is in a heavy crosswind where it's nice to have a longer final to try to get a better sense of the wind.

How's it going Brett?
err, Bret?

@lnafziger This are, you know... Friday night. Girlfriend just arrived so, aviation chat room is probably not going to be as much of an option.

@BretCopeland Haha, well it sounds like you will have more fun if you aren't here anyway. :)
I'm stuck in Richmond, VA for the night though so don't have much else to do.

2:12 AM
@lnafziger she says Richmond is a nice place.

Yeah, it's just wet and cold right now, lol.

Well, I have to go get ingredients and make tacos now.

Cool, have a good night then!

1 hour later…
3:24 AM
@Terry okay, so it's really meat to be used for the Jubo. Now somebody needs to help me to understand the use of it for others than you Terry, who obviously enjoyed creating it.

Anonymous
@Terry mad respect for what you've done, keep up the good work!

3:54 AM
@lnafziger for the record. Tacos were a complete success.

@BretCopeland Haha, nice site!

5:52 AM
@Qantas94Heavy Took you long enough!
@Qantas94Heavy :-)

@BretCopeland Agreed - if the wind is really gusty or a nasty crosswind component I'm a little less likely to ask for or accept a short approach. I like the extra work, but if I already have to work to deal with the wind already - meh :)

what's up @voretaq7

@lnafziger n2m, getting in from my semi-date

what's a semi-date? ;-)

@lnafziger first time meeting someone, informal dinner, coffee, nobody winds up at anyone else's house :)

6:00 AM
Ahhh, gotcha. How did it go?

I'll probably see him again :)

cool
Would you hurry up and get to 3k? It's lonely up here. ;-)

@lnafziger lol you guys have been posting good answers to all the new questions before me!

I was barely even on today... Gave you a break while I was working!

listening to UCAP talk about the driver's license medical proposal - they're hitting exactly the point that bugs me (the DL medical is "VFR only", so all the folks with an instrument rating who just skip out on the 3rd class medical will start scud running because they can't go IFR legally)

6:09 AM
Yeah, that won't be good... The part that scares me though is that there are people out there who know that they can't pass a medical, but if they aren't required to have one will happily go jump in an airplane using only their DL....
Even if it is day vfr it's still an airplane!

yeah, that bothers me a little
I don't think it will be as much of a problem as some folks though - they can already jump in a Cessna 150 as "light sport"

yeah, that's what bothered me about that too, lol.

the LSA accident rate hasn't been that bad though from what I understand
the third class medical is a joke anyway - about the only thing I'm really worried about are diabetics
I know some diabetics who are SHIT about managing their sugar, and they can get a driver's license no problem
also I despise the medical because every AME around here uses the stupid prism machine for the eye test, and they're never properly aligned. just buy a goddamn snellen chart and draw a 20 foot line!

Yeah right? I had one pilot tell me that he was out on the road and needed to get his medical so he called his AME that he always used, and the guy just mailed him his new one. Never even went into the office.

@lnafziger oy.
I just make sure I see my optometrist within 30 days of my medical and have him fill out the eye test form - no AME has ever given me crap about it, but if they ever do "here's the stupid paper."

6:20 AM
Then I saw another pilot let his medical expire (he didn't get a new one because he was afraid to report his third DUI on the application) and he flew around for over a year without having on at all.

@lnafziger oh for the love of kittens

Oh, and he flew Learjets for a charter company, lol.

And we have the national driver registry which consolidates this shit -- how does the FAA not review that? sigh
@lnafziger "At least he always had a (hopefully sober) right seater" ?

Yeah well, he finally got caught but it was because of a US Customs issue that got reported to their POI. The POI then did a records check as a matter of due course, and it came up.
Yeah, I hope so, lol.
Did you see the update to my answer: aviation.stackexchange.com/a/355/69

@lnafziger the faa is here to help us...somtimes really!

6:24 AM
@voretaq7 lmao, yup
It took me a minute to figure out though: What is a P-NOTAM?

@lnafziger Procedure :)

Procedural, right?

nbaa.org/ops/airspace/issues/notam-realignment/FAA20070919.pdf was very helpful to me when I came back from my training gap & FUCKING EVERYTHING CHANGED

Hadn't seen that one before...
Hey, that link is what I found when I searched.. :)

there's an FAA thing too but I have that one bookmarked :P

6:27 AM
I like the two diagrams (pages 4 and 5). duh

you may notice some streamlining? :)

gotta love it
Oh, did you see that Qantas self-nominated for a mod spot?

nope havent patrolled meta since this am

He just did it a little bit ago. Well written nomination, probably the best of the bunch! :)
Anyway, I'm off to bed.
Have a good night!

nyte :)

6:31 AM
Oh, I'll give you one question to answer before I go... Hold on a minute.

@lnafziger if i remember planes are faraday cages... dunno

> As the desired angle of bank is established, aileron and rudder pressures should be relaxed.
Is this not obvious?

@Zirak Hey! I can't remember exactly how I was getting the parseMessage invalid logs, but everything's working now! :) Thanks for getting back to me

Everyone showed up at once!

@egid It does and it doesn't. ADDS just returns resp.data['@attributes'].num_results === '0', but if you enter an IATA code instead of ICAO, then you do get an error saying there's no such airport: 'No matching ICAO code could be found for the IATA code ' + query + '! Check you typed the correct 3-letter IATA code, or type its 4-letter ICAO code instead.'

6:43 AM
@Qantas94Heavy What is that quote from?

@voretaq7 Yeah, !!weather doesn't decode these remarks/flags yet, it's on my to-do list

@lnafziger: that's from the Airplane Flying Handbook, FAA

@Qantas94Heavy Haha, nice

@called2voyage Exactly! It's coming... :)
@voretaq7 that's odd, you should've seen an error. Will add this to my list to look at
@lnafziger You can just click the "upload" button to the right of where you type a message (not sure if the mobile client has the same feature)

@DannyBeckett I don't think that's on my iPad.

6:51 AM
@egid He was going to, but I think it's a case of when he gets a chance. I'm happy to show you to get started writing commands for the bot, just give me a ping. All help is appreciated!
@lnafziger ah I see :(

alright guys, I'm off to bed. Have a good night!

@Pondlife i disagree that an airport implies only large airports with commercial traffic. I even hear non-aviation people refer to the "small" airports.

7:55 PM
@lnafziger wait, what?
just curious about context
oh, i see... the tag wiki

@egid hey, yeah

i wish you could improve tag wiki proposals
the system is a little clunky

Yeah, just like proposed edits on questions and answers...

8:43 PM
@lnafziger the Europe part got added, I think
ah, no, it was a remark at the end, that's how i missed it

9:20 PM
@lnafziger I know what you mean. My main point - which may not have come across well the summary - is that "airport" covers everything, regardless of size. Hence the wording "Airports vary widely in size from large international commercial hubs with multiple runways to smaller general aviation airfields and private grass strips".
@lnafziger Wikipedia even has a section on terminology under airport, but it uses "aerodrome" (which I very rarely hear used) in the same way that I referred to "airfield". FWIW, I'm a British English speaker so that might colo(u)r my opinion :)

@Pondlife i get that, but I think often the wording is more to do with usage
I frequently fly in and out of a 3000x50' "international airport"
it has customs

@egid Yes, usage is everything here. IMO, there is no clear distinction between airport, airfield and aerodrome. ATC even asks me to "report the field in sight". Do you agree that "airport" should cover everything? If so, how could I make the clearer in my proposal? If not, why not?

most airports in the US are called airports, regardless of size
field is a synonym i suppose
i would suggest removing "but using the word airport usually implies that the facility is relatively large, public and primarily handles scheduled commercial traffic."

@egid Yes, I think airport should be the primary tag, with airfield and aerodrome as synonyms.
@egid I'll remove the phrase you suggest, although personally I think it's reasonable. I don"t go to the (GA) "airport" to fly, I go to the "airfield". But again, this may be British vs American English, or it my just be me :-) Either way, it's not worth worrying about it if you and others feel strongly it should be changed.
@egid I've changed it, let me know what you think

9:49 PM
@Pondlife that's definitely a Britishism :)
I definitely "go to the airport" etc

@egid OK, good to know :-)

well, I guess I should say that it's definitely not an Americanism ;)
I can't speak for other english speakers

Neither can I :-)

yes, because it's an airport simulator, not a flight simulator nor an ATC sim

god an ATC sim would be horrible

@PatoSáinz disagree. ATC sims can actually be quite fun.

Hey, only have a second on my phone but wanted to point out for the airport wiki that, at least here in the US, We have airports, gliderports, heliporys, seaports, etc. but only the airport is referred to as an airport. @Pondlife @egid
And I also agree that airfield and aerodrome should be synonyms for airport.

Well they both refer to the same concept, so yeah they should probably be synonyms
