Hehe I had a funny experience in our M&M group once. our dark controller who was semi-evil tried to turn a hobo into a horse made of darkness to ride,(he was also police cheif.) he failed and it turned out this hobo was superhuman. the hobo stabbed Zari(our dark controller.) and ran off nearly killing him.
Ollie the Magic Hobo.
He later consumed two of our dead party members with his shadow powers(materializing them as a gaping maw in the ground) and became stronger
including my character'

@Novian: More games need magic hobos, I think.

also dont refuse little girls with more power than gods.(IE questgivers). they will drive your characters insane.
Originally my character was a Dimensional Shaper capable of quite a bit(Backstory anyway....) he was on a task for said little girl and was forced to make an emergency Dimension Jump into another dimension(ours). because he wasnt careful his jump went awry and cause him to lose almost all of his power(Left with rank 2 superspeed and rank 2 disintegration but not his dimensional powers. which is how he was power level two.)
he ended up in an alleyway unconsios(Spawning terrible jokes OOC) and when he awoke the girls voice was inside his head telling him to meet the rest of the group. he tried to explain about the little girl to everyone else to get them to come along and theythought he was crazy, which eventually did go crazy because he lacked the power to withstand her presence in his mind.
he was captain slow..... a joke spawned from the fact that he could run only marginally better than a human, and no one belived he used to be able to shape dimensions to his will.
His superhero name was actually Lazarus.'
well ive talked way too much
probably annoying you all.
my favorite character to roleplay ever though

heh, "little girls with more power than gods" makes me think of Jaela Daran

who?

the 11-year-old "pope" of the Church of the Silver Flame in Eberron

2:35 AM
???

the Keeper of the Flame is not (necessarily) chosen from among the Church's bishops, but rather chosen directly by the Silver Flame itself, and usually has more to do with the Keeper's destiny status and prophetic abilities than with any other qualifications

also never call a little girl villain a bitch. especially if she can shatter things and your a cyborg with enough power to annoy a DM
magical girls are messed up when evil
Blast linked Drain trait(all) with penetrating contagious and disease
all at rank 10 or higher.
I make messed up shit when I aint limited
they have to tell me to tone some characters down
of course I follow the books rules.
but M&M is so easy to break
within the rules
@ KRyan hmm interesting
Sounds like that would make an interesting book.
undoubtably Eberron has spawned some. just like the forgotten realms

heh, the other important note is that the country of Thrane is a theocracy ruled by the Church, so Jaela's not just the spiritual leader of the church, she's also a head of state

ooooh political cheese flavored goodness

the Thranes are reportedly quite happy with the young Keeper's rule so far, though, and she's apparently been ruling for 5 years
i.e. since she was 6

2:44 AM
....how?
6 year olds are bumbling idiots

probably mostly because most functions are delegated to the council of cardinals
while they taught her

must go.
be back shortly

2 hours later…
4:37 AM
@Novian: anyway, the reason I brought up Jaela Daran is that, while in Eberron the highest-level humanoids are just pushing level 10, and Jaela herself is just a Human Cleric 3, when she is within the cathedral that houses the Silver Flame she counts as a Cleric 18. Which, in Eberron, is high enough to go toe-to-toe with anybody

4:50 AM
lol
I have a question about realmshelps.net/cgi-bin/featbox.pl?feat=Summon_Elemental Does this just mean I have to have a 4th level summoning spell in reserve to use it or does it consume a 4th level summon spell when I use it?
if I just have to have one in reserve cool'
free summon
if not
darn
My next two feats are prolly gonna be that and augment summoning.
For some reason I want to play a summoner druid
well I need spell focus first and I dunno about that
didnt think it warranted an actual question as it would probably be ruled a read the feat situation but i dont think its that clear
will take a few levels to even get another feat as I am Level 5

@Novian: Reserve Feats function endlessly so long as you have a spell slot available
it does not use the spell slot
and yes, Summon Elemental is a damn good feat, one of the few good Reserve feats
the air elementals make excellent scouts and the earth elementals are solid trapmonkeys
by which I mean they go in first and trigger the trap

2:00 PM
well considering at my current level even if I could use the Feat then they would only last 5 rounds. unfortunately i cannot cast 4th level spells yet.

5 rounds is more than long enough.

@somori thats fucking hilarious
that comic
poorly drawn and instantly funny
yes it is
and it serves to keep my summon arsenal good and bolstered
hmm seems Ill need 3 levels before I can get the feat.
dont you get a feat at 4th?
hmm ill need to check my wolf HD to see if she gets one.
and do skill points. Because apparently they get those.....
...

2:25 PM
@somori Yeaaah, not so much for combat. Most Reserve feats are bad because they're combat abilities (mostly blasting), and they're really mediocre as combat abilities. But Summon Elemental's got great utility use.

The blastings have one advantage at least - infinity.
And that's what I mean about 5 rounds being long enough - who really tracks combat time when you commonly use utility spells?
And if it takes an earth elemental more than 5 rounds to find a trap, there ain't no trap there (unless the GM is feeling particularly devious).

best of all these elementals dont have feelings..
use em as trap fodder and they dont get pissed
and try to kill you later
like a Gnome Cohort
....

Yeah, sentient beings tend to take a dim view of being sacrificed so you don't get scratched by a trap.

your right though half of them seem to be blaster spells

@somori Yeaaah, (Summoning) effects don't really give them a lot of choice about it, and besides, you explicitly get a new one every time (there's actually a variant where you don't), so it's not like they know what's coming
@Novian eh, water breathing can be had for cheaper, and the CL boost for [Water] spells is only useful if for some reason you have a lot of those

2:31 PM
Id leave Blasting with magic to warlocks
but thats just me

@Novian That's the same DC as Casting Defensively; most mages try to be able to make that one automatically

in an aquatic campaign water spells might be common I dunno

the CL boost is generally the best use of the Reserve feats, sadly

unless you find yourself playing a Blaster low on spells. but then again your doing it wrong

Wizards and even more so Sorcerers can definitely be better blasters than Warlocks (who are really quite mediocre), but not through Reserve feats

2:33 PM
I like Warlocks utility and some of their invocations make for nice combinations

yeah, I could maybe see it at very, very low levels where spell slots are a greatly limiting factor

and the short consise list of magical abilities I have to write when I play them.

Warlocks have a fair few nice things, but ultimately they get far too few Invocations Known, and the Invocations were nerfed too hard in compensation for their at-will nature
like, clearly at-will is better than limited per day, but Wizards overvalued how much better, and therefore made Invocations worse than they should have been for balance
with spellcasters, which admittedly are a poor balance point in the first place

about the only classes I dont play are Bard,Fighter,Wizard, and a few other classes

Bard is an amazing class

2:36 PM
I didnt much care for it

there are a ton of classes I wouldn't play, since, especially early on in 3.5, Wizards had some really awful design

wish the spell sleep wasnt just 4 HD making it all but useless shortly after you get it
oh great I can put a bunny to sleep whoopie!

Fighter, Hexblade, Monk, Ninja, Paladin, Samurai, and Spellthief are all pretty atrocious

I like monk

sleep is one of the best spells in the game when you're level 1-2
but yeah
it becomes weak very quickly

2:37 PM
I dont see why everyone seems to dislike it.'
I can play a monk quite effectlivly
compensating for armor and damage is easy. and with the way I roll stats MAD is not a problem

@Novian: it's class features are a mish-mash of minor abilities that dno't synergize in the slightest, and it's few major class features are mutually exclusive. It's a melee class with d8 HD and 3/4 BAB, and Flurry piles more penalties on top of that.

Im a lucky SOB at stats

I despise rolling for any permanent statistic
but having a very-high PB-equivalent helps the Monk, but does not fix it

i dont get or like the point buy system

it also depends on your level
Monk 2 is pretty solid

2:39 PM
What's not to get about point buy?

Monk 12 is awful
and by level 12, your magic item bonuses to abilities are more important than your base stats anyway
and you cannot afford to keep all of them up like they need to be

unless your a badass at magic items.

no
not unless your DM is ignoring the WBL guidelines and giving you way more money than is expected
Monks need 4 different ability scores to be high

no but finding cost effective means of purchase and haggling help

a +6 to each costs 4*36,000 gp

2:41 PM
dont buy the +6
not cost effective

@Novian: the wealth by level guidelines govern wealth, not money spent, so any benefit from haggling is generally expected to be temporary

yes but it helps if only a little

not to mention, +6 is going to become necessary at some point anyway
and even then you're still massively worse off than... almost any other class in the game
Ninja, Samurai, Truenamer... only things I can think of

I compensated pretty well.
dying only 3 times at the hands of a DM Plot object
damn Door of Wonder

That said though... Iaijutsu Duel with Invisibility At-Will is pretty scary. (damn Maurezhi's and their soul sucking of abilities).

2:44 PM
lol
DM plot objects that give you a will save and every time you fail it gets bigger are not nice
expecially when you gotta roll 15 or higher in the first place on the die

@somori eh, Iaijutso caps at 9d6 and it's non-trivial to get there, plus it's usually on only one attack. Neat that you needed only skill points to do it, but it's not amazing

D6 loves me D20 hates me
dont ever play me at risk

anyway, the reasons why the Monk class is terrible have been hashed out at length hundreds of time
it's not just weak, it's also pretty terrible design

While you have your opnion I choose to ignore it. Im not one of those people who cares too much about something like that too much

I strongly recommend replacing it with Ardent (Complete Psionics) or Psychic Warrior (Expanded Psionics Handbook or SRD) with Tashalatora (Secrets of Sarlona), or with the Swordsage (Tome of Battle)
@Novian really not "my" opinion so much as the consensus opinion of the wider 3.5-playing community. This is generally an accepted fact.

2:48 PM
I dont mind Monk and unfortunatley ToB is banned because of perceived OPness which isnt really there

it's really, really not

well then I choose to ignore Fact and have my own opinion
as i have played monk several times and never had a problem

ToB is the best-designed book WotC ever printed for 3.5, and its balance – both internally, among the options it presents, and externally, in how it responds to encounters – is tighter than any other book by several orders of magnitude
@Novian that's due at least in part to your playing an extremely low-op game; generally speaking I've found that's true of a lot of members here.

Added to that, the options in ToB were simply more fun.

@somori absolutely agreed
@Novian: by the way, I really hope you do not take comments about "low-op" as an insult or anything; they are very much not meant to be. Having fun is what matters. In a conversation like this, though, I'm talking about my own experience with much higher standards for how a class is supposed to perform, and the Monk does not keep up.

3:35 PM
@ioanwigmore Did the video help show you what was going on?

4 hours later…
7:26 PM
@KRyan wouldn't dream of it as you are quite helpful and fun to argue pointlessly with.
kinda funny that a summoner druid is what I chose now though. DM might not like me.
all the summon spells ive got prepared are construct summons
perhaps it is wise to chose feats carefully
any reccomendations?

for reserve feats like sickening grasp that can be reduced by save what determines the save. 10 + CL?

10:30 PM
....too bad I cant summon trolls. One thing im good at is making horrid puns. I want to be able to say "For my standard action "I Troll the enemy""
wonder is my freind has gotten off his ass and finished the 3rd edition of his RPG
Im looking foward to Unrealistic Chaos 3rd Edition.....
somehow he takes nonsensical DM and Player Bullshit and makes it both playable and enjoyable.
an enemy once threw a dMillion at me.
another of my freinds is working on his custom Digimon RPG and the only thing that was wrong with the last one was Digivolution imbalance. I digivolved 2 or 3 encounters before anyone else. I was a Badass
digimon.wikia.com/wiki/Liamon because fuck being rookie
