12:05 AM
@nitsua60 I deleted that thread. It was mostly back and forth about "why I get downgraded" [sic]. I appreciate you trying to explain to him but at this point I think that needs to go to meta or chat, we were up to 10 comments on that A to no good effect.
same discussion was happening on other posts too.
when my mod spidey-sense goes off that we're about to have a flameout, I've determined over time it's best for everyone to remove it from the main site asap.

1 hour later…
1:27 AM
hey there @daze413

ohai! @Shalvenay been a while since I been here. Holidays were really hectic.
Also, I have my doubts that one of my players is cheating. Fudging dice during group checks, overstating his spell slots and HP during play. Should I really start monitoring his character sheet secretly? :(
I should gather more evidence. Though another player has already casually called him out Out-of-game

12
Q: How do you tell someone you think they are cheating?

ZachI am a player in a group with a DM who does not fully understand the rules of the system. Also in this group is a player who, so far as I can tell, is consistently breaking the rules, and giving other players bad advice which results in them doing the same. This situation presents a number of pr...

yeah, read that a minute ago. Not that helpful as the question is about one player thinking another player is stretching the rules to benefit the party.
My player, I suspect, is fudging dice on initiatives. and stretching his spell slots to cast additional shield spells

It'd be important to figure out why, if he's doing it.
He may think he needs to do it for some reason.
If you can address that reason, then the symptom will cease.

yeah, wanna talk to him privately when I get the chance.

1:40 AM
The other player calling him out may be a good starting point for that conversation.
Just remember, it's about two friends playing a game together and trying to make sure it's fun for your friend.

I can't figure out why he's doing it, though. The encounters I've run so far have been nerfed one way or another by myself screwing up the rules or forgetting a creature's ability haha
d'oh! that guy was immune to force damage, he shouldn't have died with the magic missile spel... wellp, it's too late now.

He may have a feel for a reason.
eg, if he's had bad experiences in the past with overdifficult encounters, he may think he's only surviving because of the cheating.

we don't have RPG baggage. The only dm he's ever had was me, we're pretty new to the hobby. I think it's because he also DMs another group of his friends, and he's grown accustomed to that role (he never cheated before, as far as I can tell)
I think I read somewhere here about the difficulty of transitioning to being a player again as a DM

1:56 AM
It's definitely A Thing.

that failing (missing attacks, saves, checks) , as a DM, is part of the plan and nothing to worry about. While if you're failing as a player, those failures are cause for concern. He may have a problem with that.

D&D doesn't really lend itself to failing forward on a very granular level, no.

2:23 AM
Quick note toward a magic system: combine BGS relationships with Shadowcraft magic mechanics. Your relationship with a magical patron is the source of your power, and all magic you perform comes from interaction with that patron.
The relationship grants you a Magic skill which is rolled like Shadowcraft, except that consequences suffered from success-at-cost are inflicted on your relationship with the patron and must be resolved through interaction with them. You can also spend fate points on the relationship for effects, and be compelled in the same way.
I think this might be a good system to use for the Magical Egypt game, since magic in that setting comes from interaction with gods, fates, spirits, etc.

@BESW -- that actually sounds like a very interesting way to handle magic at-large

(in Shadowcraft, magic never fails. If you fail a roll, you instead succeed at cost in the form of special consequences.)
Yeah, I think it'd be a good way to keep magic dynamic, whimsical, unpredictable, etc.
All your patron's agendas become part of the powers and limits of your magic. You could draw on magic from multiple patrons (in a traditional pantheon you'd be expected to!) but all their friendships and fallings out would become yours too.

2:41 AM
So, your patron always comes through when you call on them, but doing difficult magic means you've got a good chance of complicating your relationship with them.
@trogdor In the system outlined above, Ajani's werecat abilities would get modeled as an add-on to his relationship with Bastet.
So, for example if Bastet got miffed with Ajani I could spend fate points on that consequence to make it harder for him to do things in cat form.

hmm
certainly interested in trying it out

3:56 AM
@mxyzplk Makes perfectly good sense--thanks. (Like I said, my own spidey-sense was tingling when I realized I'd written four comments in a row, and wanted to be sure I wasn't causing trouble.)

4:20 AM
@Zachiel I think the more technical term is 'false cognates'

@JoelHarmon I seem to recall the term "visual cognate"--but maybe I just had some crazy professor say that.

I got False Cognates from a language teacher friend
also, I recall you mentioning a Monk/Cleric multiclass the other day; did you ever expand on that? Alternately, I may be crazy.

@JoelHarmon False Cognates and False Friends are similar but not the same
False Friends are words that are related etymologically but have completely different meanings, while false cognates have similar sounds and/or meanings but completely separate etymologies
so in a way they are opposites, I guess

@LegendaryDude Cool, I learned a thing today

4:34 AM
I think I've only ever heard those terms informally, and figured they both meant "seems like it should match, but doesn't"

@JoelHarmon That was me, I didn't expand on it, I make no judgment as to your sanity =)

@nitsua60 thanks, we all appreciate that

(As Groucho would have put it, I haven't had time to inspect your Sanity Clause....)
Yeah. Monk/Cleric MC.
Had never considered it, because I generally play a tanky cleric or a druid-ey cleric.

I've been nerd-sniped into trying to determine what advantage you'd get from it
(pun possibly intended; I've no idea)

But I have this new game started up Monday and had planned to play either a (straight) monk or Ftr1/Cl many multiclass.
Another player had planned to either play a (straight) monk or (straight) druid.
We tossed a coin and I got the monk, he got the druid. All happy.

4:41 AM
I have this vague feeling that you should have been rolling a die instead

With a paladin in the party we thought the druid and pally could handle some healing, but as we got into it we were feeling the need for more healing, so I was thinking about wholesale-switching to my tanky cleric.
@JoelHarmon That's what I said.
=)
(I equate "coin" with "any even-sided die" in my mind.)

I have a handy d6 with races on it, and a d12 for moods

@JoelHarmon I would totally dig a die for races and another for classes =)

handy for quick NPC generation; you've just met an irritated elf, a happy dwarf, and an inconsolable halfling
the story nearly writes itself

@JoelHarmon Sounds like a party in Bag End =)

4:44 AM
you could always just make charts and do a lookup with a numbered die, but that's somehow less fun

In any case, my monk's got dex&wis 16 at L1 and I'm chatting with another player about whether I should ditch it and switch to the cleric. And he says "why not just take a level or 2?"

where'd that recent question about the negatives of multiclassing go...

Which I'd never considered, but then I realized that my HP is as good as the tanky cleric, my AC's as good as the tanky cleric (unarmored 16 and gonna go up, which the cleric's wouldn't), and I can stay at the front line dealing out (many, little) bunches of damage, then get over to anyone who needs healing.
@JoelHarmon Yeah, I was "meh" about some of the answers on that one.

not much jumps out at me as synergising well. You've got good dex/wis, which works for both; you can get good flavor with Trickery/Way of Shadow or Way of Open Hand/[light/life]

I'm not grabbing much. Either 1 or 2 levels of cleric, most likely. So I'll basically be a monk that can back up the paladin's and druid's healing when needed.

4:50 AM
maybe Arcana Domain and Way of the Four Elements would be thematic, but I think I have the real thing: Light domain and Way of the Sun Soul
(if you've got SCAG handy)

On the MC question, I'd have liked to see an answer that looked at multiclassing as 1-2 level "dip," multiclassing 4/many, multiclassing half-and-half, and multiclassing more than two classes. There are strong arguments for/against any of those "types" of MC that don't necessarily overlap a lot.

I haven't made time to answer questions recently
my for-fun RPG time has been figuring out what I want to do at this weekend's pitch party

@JoelHarmon Yeah, the monk was always going to be sun soul, to the choice for me was light vs. knowledge (which fits a lot of my character's things flavor-wise, but doesn't really synergize at all).

that will narrow it down

@JoelHarmon so what are some of the possibilities?

4:54 AM
yeah, the multiclass there doesn't seem to stack well
for the pitches, I'd like to pitch a DW 3-5 shot, Lasers and Feelings, and Roll for Shoes (which terrifies me, meaning I should probably do it)
suffice to say, BESW is a terrible influence on me
3

@JoelHarmon is this a thing your group does where you pitch ideas and try to get through them during the year?

everything but the 'year' part, yes; typical separation is 3-6 months

@JoelHarmon Cool. Good luck =)

last time was around 9 DMs, this time is 5+ (there are often late entries)

5:29 AM
@nitsua60 The thing is, a cleric has a lot to gain from a monk level. The opposite isn't really true.

5:56 AM
Clerics don't get much outside of their spell casting
So dipping doesn't benefit you as much as it would if you mained cleric and dipped another class
I had considered a wizard (illusionist)/monk (way of shadow) dip recently, thought it would be a fun ninja-y character
But multiclassing monk always feels detrimental to me

Well, there's at least one case where I can prove it's not - for a Moon Druid it's worth +3-5 AC to all animal forms.

@Miniman That's fair, certainly an exception. And maybe the 5e monk is more MC compatible, I don't really know. Ability scores are certainly not as important as they are in PFRPG in terms of SAD/MAD classes.
I've only been running 5e for the past year and have only DMed thus far. I'm excited for my group's upcoming play through of Storm King's Thunder, as my friend will be DMing and I get to move to the other side of the screen for a change.

6:31 AM
@JoelHarmon Woo!

6 hours later…
12:23 PM
@Miniman Except 3 healing spells and turn undead, which is basically all I'm looking for =)
Which--I get it--isn't much compared to "good" multiclass-dips. But I think it'll work in this situation.

@LegendaryDude if you're looking for offensive versatility, this might actually be a good choice. Take Cleric(Arcana), get Sacred Flame (vs. dex), Fire Bolt (long-range), and poison spray (vs. con). And throw in Guidance for some reasonable abuse.
@LegendaryDude I think you could make a case for barbarian or fighter there

12:39 PM
@nitsua60 Turn Undead (and the much better Channel Divinity the Life Domain gets) aren't till level 2.

12:52 PM
So, remember that relationship mapping thing I was trying to figure out? Still not getting the cliques in, but...
Blue fill is kid, red fill is adult. Square are rich, ovals are poor. Purple arrows are love, green are like, orange are hate.
Accomplished with the Chrome app Gliffy.
Dark blue are the PCs.

@Green [wave]

1:40 PM
@BESW [wave]!

It's a bit quiet right now--I'm going to bed soon myself.
We've got several folks who hang around here with more Microscope experience than me.

@BESW That's very handy to know thank you.
I'm interesting in learning how to play Microscope. Ping me please if you'd care to talk about it.
3
@BESW, can you star that comment so other people will see it?
Thanks.

2:16 PM
mornin
@BESW interesting
@BESW what kind of game is this from?

I'm not grabbing much. Either 1 or 2 levels of cleric, most likely. So I'll basically be a monk that can back up the paladin's and druid's healing when needed.

@nitsua60 Have you considered the Healer feat? Or even just buying more potions?

The healer feat is out (since I'm playing a wood elf) for a few more levels, and money's tight.... I'm basically just thinking to go mk2/cl2 (already at mk1/cl1) and then figure from there whether the party looks to need more of a dedicated healer (take every subsequent level in cleric) or another front-liner (take every subsequent level in monk).

Q: Why would I ever choose rolling hit points?

TheMortenIn DnD 5th edition, all classes seemingly have the option of rolling hit points -or- just increasing their hit points by a set value. That set value is defined as the dice roll's average, rounded up. Given that it is rounded up (and thus will statistically offer better HP than rolling), why wou...

Because you or your GM were raised on an old edition

@Green ping!

@nitsua60 I am pinged!

3:04 PM
You said to ping you about microscope. I've played Microscope.

I own the Microscope manual and have read through it. I think I know how to play but my only experience is in a two player game that didn't make it past the initial setup phase.
BESW has indicated that two player games don't work out so well. I'm gonna have to try again sometime soon.

@Green Two is a little strange, in my opinion. I wouldn't have described it as not working well, but I'd say that (a) it doesn't feel like full Microscope; (b) it feels like we could just be improv/riffing a creative story together, and that Microscope is a lot of overhead just getting in the way of that.
IOW, with two I wouldn't pull out Microscope again. I might take five minutes to collaboratively-design a two-person microlite "system" just to shake us out of ruts, instead.

3:30 PM
@nitsua60 Thank you for the advice. I'll try to pull together a larger group to work with.

@JoshuaAslanSmith One of my players has never played before, but no matter how many 1s he rolls, I can't convince him to take the average for HP.

3:44 PM
@Miniman Yes there will always be a subset of people who focus on the maximum payout to the exclusion of actual statistical advantage see: las vegas. I was just being a bit snarky about it. All it took was one bad dice roll set in 4e char gen for me to be like NEVER AGAIN
to be fair 4e's focus on combat and skill challenge rolls and tight balance between PCs and enemies means that you are literally screwed for an entire run vs. a more story focused system it being less of an issue

@JoshuaAslanSmith Don't forget that those of us raised on old editions also felt much less that the game really depended on a single roll. My 1-HP L1 fighter wasn't that much more fragile than a 6-HP fighter. Either one hit would kill me or a second might be necessary. In any case, I'm running from fights and trying to scrape together enough loot to make L2 before going rat-killing.

My most-recent ODD character was, literally, a 1-hp fighting man. Got a bow, looked for easy targets, ran at the first sign of attention.

@nitsua60 Glass-cannons for the win!

I give my players the higher of the roll or the average... v_v
(in 5e, that is)

1 hour later…
5:13 PM
so... my bard REALLY wants to burn the Barge Right INN down...

5:26 PM
@DForck42 Because it's a terrible pun?

@LegendaryDude no, cause we keep getting stuff stolen from use cause it's run by zhentarum

haha, that's fair

Q: SevenSidedDie - problem with your moderation!

Troll BourneOkay, I have found your Meta site and as directed am writing directly to you concerning the question you put on hold. I am VERY displeased with your interference with my question and seem to think you just have some personal issue with me and completely unbeknownst to me. You said we could talk ...

@TheOracle -_-

@TheOracle "superiors"
@TheOracle this is why I tended to let the community close questions rather than close them myself when I was a mod
unless it was SUPER obvious that it was off-topic or egregious in some fashion

Q: Is a Bonus Action an Action?

Troll BourneThe rules that says a bonus action is an action (PHB, p. 189, emphasis mine): Bonus Actions Various class features, spells, and other abilities let you take an additional action on your turn called a bonus action. Despite this, the general view is that a bonus action is not an action, ...

@DForck42 This is a bigger issue than just SSD's moderation... I think the user is having a hard time understanding how we do things here and is feeling like everyone is attacking him :(

I just edited it to include a link back to his question

@JoshuaAslanSmith You're playing with fire now.

@LegendaryDude I dont think so, his meta is in response to the comments and closure of it so I think its necessary for anyone that wasnt directly involved with said question to be able to see where his meta question is originating from

@LegendaryDude true

5:46 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I understand. My point is that he may not take kindly to your edit. Up to this point he has been adamant that his questions, as written, are precisely what he intends them to be and has been resistant to any sort of edits whether merely suggested in the comments or "forced."
@JoshuaAslanSmith Not just on "Is a bonus action an action?" question but on others as well.

gotcha I mean I did leave a comment
honestly if he wants site wide attention/exposure it needs to where he thinks he is being singled out

Yeah, I saw that and it's probably fine. Just warning you that based on my observations he may not take kindly to the edit, as innocuous as it may seem.

oh its fine
I have no fear
I stood up to be a moderator at the last election

Yeah I saw :)

just need to use the BESW approach of patience, kindness, and an assumption of zero malice

5:48 PM
I think that's the best thing about this site
We're not a forum and there's little room for disagreement outside of downvotes. Most people are genuinely here to help. I wish I had the kind of patience that some of the other regulars have.

It is a learned and cultivated thing
takes practice
Also it helps to have an example of what happens when it isnt applied
I myself have felt the curtness of say MXYZLP or even Brian (back when he was a mod) which was not malicious but just through the speed of the action and limited nature of the dialog on the internet came off a rude/mean

Same. It took time to realize it's not rude, just efficient.
I don't mind it, that's how I behave at work.

and read all the comments
Yeah this is a core not understanding of how SE is different from a forum and how the site mechanics are meant to operate
@DForck42 was about to write an answer much like your own
added a comment to yours instead

6:04 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith :-D

Is it worth mentioning on that meta post that site mods are elected by the community, not assigned or hired by StackExchange?

@LegendaryDude Interesting thought though - is that the kind of person we would want here? I can see a number of problems with that train of thought (not to mention other apparent issues in some of the posts/comments).

@Sh4d0wsPlyr Which train of thought? Rudeness --> Efficiency?

I think hes saying that this dude needs to bend to how RPG.SE works
I mean everyone does
You hit a wall and accept the process or you bounce off and dont come back
theres a small percentage of people who dont get angry but dont really learn and just need edits everytime they post but they are fine with that

Yes, true. Most users, in my experience, will either begin to understand that we're not out to get them and are able to assimilate into our community and turn out to be quite lovely people, don't learn but are fine with being edited (as you say), or burn out very quickly and never come back

6:20 PM
When I was on daily it was about once a month something like this occured with a new user (or maybe they use a less rigorous stack and were simply new to rpg.se)

I definitely recall feeling like I was being singled out to a degree when I first started posting, but that's really just a bias you have to contend with. You're always going to feel singled out when you don't see the hundreds of other corrections, edits, closed questions, etc.
Gaining access to the review queue was an eye opener for me.
@JoshuaAslanSmith That was tough a tough transition for me; I'm not really an active poster on SO or ServerFault but I use them as a resource all the time, and the way comments are modded on those sites is very different than what we do here.

oh totally, Brian put my first question on hold, I started to get downvotes
WHY ME
etc.
@LegendaryDude Pretty much, RPG.SE is the closest adherent to the main SE guidelines and rules that Ive found
I think its a nature of a stable community that has a lot of experts that stick around
and most users buy in to some degree and rep up
the quality of the chat in our main chat doesnt hurt

6:54 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith troll posted this in response to my answer: "I'm not sure what you guys are responding to...because that has nothing to do with the issue. The issue is with Seven period"
I don't think this site's meant for him tbh...

@Powerdork Amazed by what, exactly?

Someone with 1200 rep asked that.

@Powerdork He's got a very high volume of questions (129).

So not inexperienced.

lol @JoshuaAslanSmith he reverted your edit

@DForck42 I called it.

@LegendaryDude this guy...
he's not LISTENING to ANYTHING anyone is saying

@DForck42 Oh I saw and bit my tongue on an explanation
@LegendaryDude choice
Im fine with edit reverts

@JoshuaAslanSmith it's just funny

7:09 PM
@Powerdork and yeah that pathfinder question needs to be closed
balance discussions are off topic

@JoshuaAslanSmith "one person's balance is another person's broken"
I heard that somewhere, recently

Is it a 3rd party product?

@JoshuaAslanSmith Yeah, Dreamscarred Press PFRPG product

even that sort of can I use 3rd party X without breaking Y might be off topic simply because of how specious answers could get
ahhh, its a little more useable then if that were emphasized
but on the face of it balance and pathfinder are a farcical combination

description says "...designed and playtested to work side-by-side with all of the standard classes."
But according to comments on the answer, it doesn't.

7:11 PM
heh
I keep coming back to " I am HIGHLY displeased and will probably follow up with your supervisors.

So I'll await your response."
like SSD is a call rep who could be fired over this

I really wanted to point out in a comment that SSD was elected by community members, not hired/appointed by anyone of authority.
Except on the authority of this being a community-run, community-driven site.
But I suspect it would make no difference.

@LegendaryDude it won't
I'm seeing a ban in this user's future if he doesn't stop being rude
I flagged one comment
@JoshuaAslanSmith I'm also HIGHKLY tempted to roll back his roll back... cause lol

@DForck42 That way lies madness

@JoshuaAslanSmith I know, that's why I haven't done it

Im with you on the heres how the site works, but that would probably get you a talking to by the actual mods for inflaming the situtation
My inner judge dredd though approves

7:23 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith lol
I AM THE LAW!!!

7:33 PM
@DForck42 its my meme of choice for meta Tag deletion answers

A: Player-Needs Tag Clarification

Joshua Aslan SmithTerminate with Extreme Prejudice It's only used on 14 questions, has no wiki description, and does not seem to be used consistently beyond questions that have something to do with players (but not problem players). It's amorphous and doesn't add anything to the questions it's used on.

@JoshuaAslanSmith neat

I'm surprised there isn't already backlash/commentary regarding the 6 downvotes on the meta Q

Yeah Ive been waiting for the me against the world comment
#persecution

@LegendaryDude meh
we'll see what happens
either he'll cool his jets, get ahold of the CMs and basically told to STFU, or he'll get rude enough to get banned
or some combination therein

Love when a site mod drives by and is like, uhhh no youre wrong

7:41 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith lol

I was accused of threatening someone in main chat once
for using a military allusion to getting smoked (completely tired punitive exercise) by a drill sergeant to explain to a new user the sort of breaking and reshaping that needed to happen to a new SE user to really thrive
they flagged my comment and a site mod came in and reviewed everything
and I just took a big break

I had bad feelings about this particular case when he commented in a back and forth on an answer I had written that he knew better because, and he had been playing D&D for longer than I had been alive
Now, whether that's true or not, it was rather presumptive about my age

hahaha
he also was like "Im college educated"
which means nothing here

well, unless you have a PhD in like, game theory or something :P

Invoking authority/specialized experience or knowledge from a completely inapplicable field gets you no where
even then it doesnt matter because your phd in game theory probably didnt cover how to sucessfully use stack exchange
credentials are very circumspect as a justification for question or answer quality

7:50 PM
That is true
In most regards, simply having credentials is not enough to prove you know what you're talking about
It's only enough to prove you have a piece of paper that says you are credentialed

@LegendaryDude true dat
@JoshuaAslanSmith while I personally appreciate the imagery, depending on the delivery it probably got taken wrong

@JoshuaAslanSmith that's always the best response when it gets to that point. I've had a few experiences where things got a little too heated or frustrating and I realized it wasn't worth the anxiety so spent a few days or weeks away from the site.
ruins my chances of getting fanatic every time :(

yeah I understand how they could interpret it that way
but it was like a 2 hour long conversation about how they needed to adapt to the stack, not the stack adapt to them
(they were convinced of the latter)

:is excited:
This seems to be the untitled "Labyrinth" title that's been listed on Amazon for months now...

@LegendaryDude it's blocked at work :(

@DForck42 Very neat!

might "steal" a couple of those for the world I'm building

so stoked to kill my players in the Tomb of Horrors.

@LegendaryDude lol
@mxyzplk even if he doesn't I appreciate the timeline events as you've laid them out

8:19 PM
How do I suggest comments to into chat?

@Powerdork Usually after a number of comments on an answer a link will appear to automatically invite to chat

I'm not seeing that here.

@Powerdork alternatively, maybe you could flag it and ask a mod to move it to chat

Good thought.

@Powerdork Ah, yeah. The chat link comes up on a back and forth between two users. It doesn't work as well for "dog-pile" threads
But a mod should be able to move it for you
I've also custom flagged it requesting to move to chat

1 hour later…

@LegendaryDude I did say that we're answerable to the SE staff, so that's where he's getting that. And we are, in the sense that once elected by y'all we also become representatives/agents of SE and they provide oversight when needed. So we really have two masters. :) But yes, I'm not inclined to attempt to explain nuances like that either when the broad strokes aren't making any impact.

@SevenSidedDie agred. he's not listening to ANYTHING anyone has to say
it's basically "Seven's a d*** and I want him fired cause reasons"
so, I'm curious what'll happen if/when he contacts the CM's and IF they choose to pay him any attention

@DForck42 If I've misstepped enough that they see a need to say something, that'll be useful feedback. More likely it'll just be filed away as part of RPG.se's record. If the responding CM is really on the ball and gets lucky, they'll say something that gives Troll Borne an epiphany and turns around their approach to the site. This is my hope, at least.

You asked what game my diagram is associated with. It's a map of the relationships made during the pre-game and first session of our game.

@DForck42 I'm pretty sure they put a check mark on our Permanent Record indicating "This person is still willing to put up with random internet goonery for no pay. Consider trying to make them do more undesirable unpaid work in the future. They have a veritable gold mine of patience that needs exploiting."
