@T.J.L. or become maesters or knights with high mortality rate etc.

@eimyr So Habsburgs?

@JoshuaAslanSmith in CK2 the most important person in the world is you, then Jesus, then your more powerful neighbour unmarried \eldest daughter.
Habsburgs will do.

I used to try to marry into power alliances with larger kingdoms but they never help me in my wars and they someone makes claims decades later so I only will marry off/into really far off stuff like south and se europe or small local duchies

Oh, that's not what I meant.
That is prime inheritance hijack material
you marry your son to the girl, stabby-stab her brothers, her father and two generations later you have the kingdom

related to this, witcher blood and wine
so soon

3:09 PM
didn't play
witcher 3
yet
because of my crappy old PC

hardware
ah yes

related: nvidia gtx 1080 price

my vid card died
so I cant paly the new expansion till I build my new pc

just in time for the release, eh?

3:09 PM
unless you're camp red
but for me £600 is a bit steep

I was team red for along time but nvidia has the better midrange price point to performance right now which is usually why I have bout ATI in the past.

I'd hope there would be some partner option released soon with a more affordable pricetag

so I was planning on a gtx 970

hmmm

which will probably go down in price with the new cards release
which is good fo rme

3:11 PM
but GTX 970 costs the same as 1070
yeah, assuming it will

970 is 300 right now

@JoshuaAslanSmith I was a big ATI fan, up until they stop producing the All-in-Wonder line of cards with the built in TV tuner.

looks like 1070 will release at around 380
Im betting 970 will drop to at least 280 if not a little lower
depends on ho wmuch demand drops

in The Nineteenth Byte, 2 mins ago, by Bald Bantha
All SE Sites are down but chat is up

1070 would be nice but it would sh the build budget over 1500 usd

3:13 PM
The other thing that may be worth looking into is Titans on the secondary market. It'll get flooded when people start buying 1080s to replace them. Should drive the price down.

Ive never been into second hand parts
I build a new pc like once every 5 years

same here

go for mid range performance
with future proof

I always was worried about what sort of ridiculous abuse was done to the poor card

Yeah, me neither. Just figured I'd throw it out there. I build new machines more often than that, but I can frequently get demo and engineering sample parts for free via work.

3:14 PM
spending 300ish on the cpu and 200ish on the mobo
@T.J.L. thats cool

It is... my latest gaming machine has an unmarked i7-4790S in it. The only thing stamped on it is "Intel Confidential" - no part number, no serial number.

We also get credit with Intel for everything we buy from them, even through distribution channels. We don't regularly use them for anything, so when the points are about to expire, my boss goes "Who wants what?" My personal SAN server has three 800 GB Intel enterprise-class SSDs in it.
Couple of months ago, we ordered a box of Intel Compute Sticks for our sales rep to hand out to customers as gifts to play with.

@eimyr that one made me really uncomfortable much of yesterday... it's the other reason I was very quiet yesterday.

@nitsua60 Waht exactly are you referring to?

3:21 PM
this is the build I hope to start buying parts for soon

what a strange choice of CPU
What's wrong with Skylake?

@JoshuaAslanSmith Are you going to over-clock or run multiple GPUs? If so, the K-series is probably overkill and a waste of money.

1 hour ago, by eimyr
I found this question and immediately thought it's an off-topic social issue. Turns out the top answer would still be right even if it was.

If I OC it will only be moderate, but I play a lot of CPU intensive games and use some software that could benefit from the improved performance
and only running 1 gpu

@JoshuaAslanSmith Well, I'm not an expert, but my preferred build atm is very different. I'd like to hear your reasoning behind it :)
@nitsua60 When in doubt do an amusing chat search.

3:28 PM
things just heated up at work so Ill have to answer that later

remember to ping @ me

3:47 PM
Anyone here have speaking privileges in the C# room? I just think it might be worth giving them a heads-up that they can probably expect a steady stream of people who just click on the upper-left site room--assuming it's going to be this one--and may be lost in Oz until they realize what's going on. (And, given that those wanderers will generally be those who hew to be nicer, perhaps a reminder to them that those wanderers may...
...be surprised at what they find in that room.)

we could try to ask nicely to pin that they are not RPG General Chat

They've updated the room description appropriately--I just found it jarring wandering over there when expecting here. And I can't speak, so have no way to let them know they might expect that sort of 'welcome'.

Yeah.
Hey, as long as they keep it civil, I don't mind that they're associated with rpg.se
it's a shame though that "they" do not seem to join "us".

I'm really curious what the drama that occurred was

long story short: bunch of C# stack people created a room in rpg.se chat space to play some games
BESW went over to meet and greet

4:00 PM
Nah, meant the drama that they're talking about over on Stack overflow

wait, what?

Unless I'm not understanding correctly, they originally had a room on stack overflow that got frozen?

they started dropping F-bombs, BESW tried diplomacy, they responded with casual dismissal, mods came in, explained the Be Nice principles

@Waterseas something like that. I'm curiosity-spelunking now.

I'm not sure what happened before that

4:02 PM
Hmm, odd

@BESW Modpocalypse

not that it matters

The way I see it going is culture clash → adjusting or not → everything is fine again either by conforming to local culture or being ejected
If it's a problem of being able to directly notify the local mods because chat flagging is network-wide, a meta is appropriate for getting us to look into a chat issue.

I'm pretty sure mods here are easily contactable
this morning has witnessed a really fast response from you gutys

Welp, in all fairness, the room they came from seems pretty toxic

4:12 PM
@Waterseas SE has capital-I Issues with chat. They're trying to turn it around but it's a big ship to turn.

Not terribly surprising honestly

Q: Toward a philosophy of Chat

That's amusing. Over on board and card games, any of our heated arguments have always been on topic
Yeah, trust me, reading through the logs of the C# room now

(I find it amusing seeing others refer to BESW as "a nobody." But then I feel fiercely protective, too...)

4:15 PM
Honestly, the most amusing part is how avidly they use the terms SJW and triggered

and tell others when and how they may feel

Yep

Trawling through those logs is a nice reminder, though, how seriously nice it is to be able to interact with others without having to sift through so much noise.
BE NICER really works at driving up SNR.
3

God, I can't believe any of that is tolerated honestly

Oh dear God.
This just makes me sad.
@nitsua60 I regret clicking on your link.

4:23 PM
Can someone drop me a link to the original C# room? It's proving hard to search for.

^^ Nitsua's link

nvm, I see it.
:)

@SevenSidedDie I just don't understand one thing: why are people who behave that way not consistently and unapologetically banned?
From chat, that is. Such a person might behave OK on mainsite.

except look at the MSE link from SSD: let's not be so quick to judge another culture on first blush.

@eimyr Chat has been a Wild West for a while. Part of the problem is that a doctrine of “local room culture” somehow organically developed, which gave cover to all kinds of toxic stuff. Mods from non-local sites are often the ones who see the flags, so uncertainty reigned. Not to mention that many flags never reach the mods because any three(?) 10k can dismiss a flag as wrong.
Staff have decided that this is Not Okay, but the culture shift is taking its time to propagate across mod-dom and down through actual moderation. The 10k problem is still a problem, so they recently gave mods a way to review flags after they've disappeared.

4:28 PM
So you're saying there are mods who see a message with Gamergater content, vulgarity and a reckless attitude and clicks "yep, all OK" ?
oh, I see, you only need 10k, not moddom to dismiss, eh?

Just like it's obnoxious for anyone to come here, not take the time to observe our norms, and start dropping f-bombs; I'd imagine it would feel obnoxious if I happened into another room and started flagging every expletive without first getting a lay of the land.

@eimyr Maybe! It's hard to tell, because there was no way until a couple weeks ago to review what happened to flags. More likely though the veritable horde of 10K users would dismiss those.

@nitsua60 if I had the time and the skin, that's exactly what I'd do.

I know that sort of "local culture" argument is problematic from a moderation sense, but it seems sensible from a citizenship perspective.

@nitsua60 Such is the case of SE network that Be Nice is expected everywhere. So if I go to whatever.se I should expect the same standards as here.
It's like going to another community centre and finding a strip club inside.

4:31 PM
@eimyr except, as you rightly point out, our standard is "BE NICER"

Yeah, right, I stand corrected.

So we're probably used to the "nicest" rooms on the network.

@nitsua60 Room culture being cover for toxic behaviour has been categorically rejected by Staff though. So local cultures are going to adjust by necessity.
Room culture existence is OK, but room cultures that drive off others by violating Be Nice are facing intentional extinction.

I'm just trying to point out that it's not necessarily our culture that will be the model. There's likely some version of Be Nice that's not quite as nice as this salon...

@nitsua60 Yes, that's an important point. Some places are going to be a lot rougher around the edges than here. There are particular kinds of rough edges that are being filed off, but not all of them, yeah.

4:35 PM
@nitsua60 by the time the others adjust to our standard, we will probably progress to eradicate some other un-niceness like unintentional ableism or whatever we recognise as problematic.
so, no, I don't expect everyone to be as nice as rpg.se

It's nice to be one bookend--it means you only need to look one way =)

I'm told that the C# room has been unfrozen, so the flurry of stuff should be over now. I'll be keeping an eye on that gaming room though.

It definitely has been,

@SevenSidedDie Thank you.

@Waterseas one thing that's not clear--is the C# gaming room intended only for people "from" C#, or might an RPGSE "home" member be welcome?
(And I can't speak there, haven't been allowed "in" and owner(s) haven't responded to invites)

4:46 PM
I originally thought that it was the second, but appears to be the first

@nitsua60 It's set to gallery, so it's invite-only. The first looks to be the case.

Its funny, because I took their survey originally think it was the second, so theoretically, their results are likely off now

Mods, fortunately, are immune to such barriers. They have a pinned message reminding them that Be Nice means comportment equal to what would be OK on the main site. We'll see where that goes.

I took the survey, too, but I'm not one of the cool kids.

They laughed at it, but that's it

Amy
4:53 PM
that c# gaming room was meant for the c# folks to start a game. we might accept non-c# users, but c# folks will be given priority. we expect to use that room for maybe another week
i'm the room creator and, at least for now, the GM-elect.

I mean, C# is the best

Amy
sorry for all the drama.

I believe it's fine, just appears that most other stack exchanges chats are a bit more moderate than what you guys are used to over on SO

Amy
yeah

@Amy These things are going to happen. Chat is just going to continually experience growing pains until everyone adjusts to the new reality that network policies explicitly apply to it. Last month it was drama at Physics.se, of all places.

5:05 PM
@Amy can I ask: if the game is intended for C# users, why create the room over here, not intending RPGSE members?

Good lord, Gencon is looking to be huge this year...
500+ exhibitors and they took over the event rooms at the sports stadium several blocks south...

@nitsua60 We have a dice roller, obvs. :)

5:24 PM
nvm. Moving on.

@MadMAxJr I'd like to go, but I suspect it would give me heart palpitations... too much going on, too many people, too strange an environment.

It's neat. But yes, tons of people.
I went in '09, ran into Robert Dubois, current owner of Dream Pod 9. That's when I went, "Oh, Heavy Gear. I remember this from the 90s." Hung out with the guys who had made Cthulhutech, and had fun playing so many Fantasy Flight Games demos.

@MadMAxJr Heavy Gear and Jovian Chronicles are two of my favourite settings to run games in, behind Shadowrun and Robotech/Macross.

Unfortunately, none of the original writers for Heavy Gear or JC still work at DP9.

Alright, time for the rest of my morning to happen. Cheers all!

Amy
5:55 PM
@nitsua60 because this is the gaming area, and we want to game.
we might originate from a non-gaming area, but imo the room wouldn't have been topical to SO.

@Amy And you're welcome to do that. We once had a room with another stack which we created to play games outside RPG.SE and that was a mistake. We missed the roller and ended up coming back here to have a couple one shots.
Still, it's hard to beat Roll20.

Amy
i think we're gonna move to Roll20.
the room here is just a......um, staging post.

it should work well that way
our attempts at RPing usually crash against timezone issues - there are folks from all parts of the world here and we are quite incompatible.
I hope you will have more luck.

Amy
yeah, i've done online RPing before, it's tough for sure

meanwhile, I'll be off for my irl game
ttfn

6:02 PM
I've done it once, and it was painful, even with having known each other in person. In all fairness, I made the mistake of trying to fit a CE character into a good party
Specifically when I didn't understand how the alignments worked too well

Roll20 is a decent toolset for many systems. That should work out.

Amy
I'm probably gonna go with Pathfinder, since i already have most of the books a GM would need.

There is a macro-loaded player sheet template you can use in roll20, for Pathfinder. It is a little cumbersome the first time you use it, but once setup correctly it will do all the player sheet math for you on a roll.

Downside of Pathfinder for an online system is it's the most rules intensive/skill micro-managing of the options you listed. I have a suspicion 5e will be really conducive to online campaigns

I've got a game with one virtual player. I have a webcam that can view the whole table, and use a 24" TV for his display, so the sound comes from his direction too. It seems to work well. The sound was a big deal, though. The whole experience wasn't as comfortable when I was using a display for him, with the sound coming from my computer at the opposite end of the table.

Amy
6:06 PM
I haven't looked at 5e at all since its release.
4e killed D&D for me

That's reasonable ^^; 4e feels almost MMOish. 5e is basically a simplified version of D&D, a lot closer to its roots than 4e was. I definitely recommend taking a look at 5e, I personally like the system a lot, but there are mechanics missing that were in other sets that feel odd not being there, like bull rushing

@Amy that's kinda what I was wondering.
@Amy if non-C# aren't welcome, you can discount one of the votes for 5e--that was me.

Same here, although I voted for all of them XD

@Amy Out of curiosity, for the Pathfinder materials, did you grab the Humble Bundle a while back that had a bunch of the PDFs for cheap?

Amy
@nitsua60 okay
@MadMAxJr nope, i got most of my books before humble bundles were a thing

6:14 PM
Alright. Let me know if you require roll20 assistance. I'm not in this room too often these days but I'll respond to a @ ping.

Amy
ok thanks

@JoshuaAslanSmith It's the sort of post that inspires me to write a script that'll auto-upvote every other comment =)

hey there @nitsua60

@JoshuaAslanSmith The guy got a hefty suspension a few hours later, and we're moving on.

@Shalvenay hiya

@nitsua60 what's up?

@nitsua60 First, though, I was called "a cap america." [accepts happily]

10:31 PM
Sitting in the hospital with my wife--looks like we're going to miss our older daughter's first dance recital =(
On the other hand, my wife's not well at a time and place in human history when we're a half-hour from advanced medical care, we've got lots of people willing to help with our kids, and I can even piggyback on to hospital wireless to get some work done.

@nitsua60 aww, hugs

@nitsua60 My sympathy and prayers go to you all.

@BESW "Hey, I went into this other group's hangout, started pissing all over it three seconds later, and someone had the NERVE to ASK ME NOT TO! ESSSS JAYYYY DOUBLE-YOU!!!"
[Back to real-time] Thanks, @Shalvenay, @BESW. Nothing big, just a little... unexpected.

@nitsua60 fair enough yeah I figured something like that was the case, but I have never been my own boss so I have no personal experience to compare in that area
@nitsua60 I hope she feels better soon
@eimyr this is pretty much exactly how I imagine that process to be now

@trogdor thanks. On the other matter, I just think of all those times I'm not really working as hard as I could. If I were my boss, my boss would know how much better a job I could be doing, and might be disappointed in me.

10:45 PM
@nitsua60 in my current situation, so far there seem to be periods of our our boss not knowing what to assign us, and then having too much stuff to assign to us all at once
(it doesn't help that a couple of people just don't seem to want to work)
that all being said, I actually don't blame him because we have been needing to do a lot of work for Festpac (a yearly festival thing that our island is hosting right now) and that has been mismanaged by the governmental officals in charge of it
so he can't really give us the work at the right time if they can't even give it to HIM at the right time XD

@trogdor what is the message re: to?

@eimyr the one pinging you? to the picture you posted about how they make the new pokemon XD

@nitsua60 Everything alright? I hope it was truly a false alarm.

can you not see it if you click on the response arrow thing?

huh
so neat

10:50 PM
cause for me that always brings me right to the thing being replied to

So waht does it point to if I just @trogdor you?

usually the last thing I said

So that actually works.
Fascinating.

yes
is it not working for you?
actually,.. I guess there isn't an arrow if you just ping me outside of a specific reply, but it still highlights the last thing I said

it is

10:52 PM
I think it is intended to assume you are replying to the very last thing I was saying if you do that

I just didn't know it has that effect.

ah ok, I see

@eimyr Not a false alarm, but neither is it too alarming.
(Thanks for the concern.)

As long as it works out.

@eimyr Actually, it all started with a workout... which led to poison ivy... which led to medications... which wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'er....
No, I've messed that up somewhere.

"There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," alternatively "I Know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly," "There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly," or "I Know an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly," is a cumulative children's song whose music was composed by Alan Mills, and whose lyrics were written by Rose Bonne. A version of the song was released on Brunswick Records in 1953, and sung by Burl Ives. The song tells the story of an old woman who swallowed increasingly large animals, each to catch the previously swallowed animal. There are many variations of phrasing in the lyrics, especially for t...

@eimyr Other than discovering that there's a WP page for everything? Sure =)

@eimyr It's a mid-century Canadian children's song, so it may not have had much influence on your Continental childhood.

@nitsua60 See her mistake was she sent incrementally larger and more powerful creatures in there, which is how you ensure an adventurer can power up to level 10. You're meant to go for broke to deal with flies of this calibre and send the goat after them in the beginning to get the fly.
