12:28 AM
@nitsua60 so we all have a permanent skeleton buddy already?

Doesn't say much, but he's super supportive.

Hehehe.

@BESW that was awful. I love it

12:45 AM
BESW takes the extra effort with awful puns
I just sort of blurt them out myself

[bow and a flourish]

and you call me the peanut gallery, I am just the opening act :P

1:02 AM
@SevenSidedDie Does 5e's hearkening back to old-school influences extend far enough to make it OSR for the purposes of the Scarlet Heroes twosie overlay?

hey @Shalvenay @BESW @trogdor @doppelgreener--just finished putting the kids down.

cool

I really did spend ten hours popping onto the site and not saying anything because that ^^ was the only thing I wanted to say.

lol
you should just do what I do, as said just slightly above
just blurt it out XD

=)

1:15 AM
@nitsua60 .... this turn of phrase means very different things for pets
And yes maybe say that joke anyway ;D

@doppelgreener True. I suppose I should have said "I just finished euthanizing the kids," but the reverse euphemism's terribly unfunny.
[post facto double trigger warning, I suppose?]
my bad
it's been a long coupla-days

@nitsua60 haha o lawd no

hey again @nitsua60

@Shalvenay hiya

@nitsua60 -- traveller question -- what's the difference between promotion and commission?
oh, hey there @Ben :)

Ben
1:24 AM
o/

@nitsua60 yeah, maybe don't use that one XD

Commission is obtaining your first (officer) rank; promotion(s) can only happen after successful commission.

even I have standards XD

@trogdor you know you're wading in it when this guy's calling out your taste:

yeah, there is a problem at that point
@nitsua60 to be fair, I do this to my dad all the time, but my bad taste is his fault so it's ok
XD :P

1:30 AM
@Shalvenay so basically the commission roll acts as a gateway for the promotions. You can imagine tweaking the balance between the two to provide a catchup mechanic (promotions get harder with rank) or to produce more "spread" (high commission roll, low promotions). Lots of little dials....

@Ben what's up?
@nitsua60 got it

Of course that all comes from the conceit of CT: all PCs start play with some military experience. (Ignoring, for the moment, "other" service.)
In ZtH I've been toying with the idea of having separate 'training' vs. 'adventuring' tables in the place of that structure.

@nitsua60 my thinking was that most folks would learn a trade alongside their service if you will

@BESW Probably not. The hit point and damage scaling are so different that 5e adventure's monsters would probably have a significant damage output advantage over a Scarlet Hero.

@trogdor you know you've made a bad joke recently when seeing SSD pop in makes you think uh-oh, did I get flagged =/

1:34 AM
yeah, BESW pinged SSD earilier, pretty sure it isn't you XD

yet...

XDXDXD
this time gadget

Ben
@Shalvenay Not much. Debugging.

@Ben ah, what sort of debugging? :p

Ben
Passing time by looking up D&D jokes too
@Shalvenay Coding. Writing a data management program

1:35 AM
@nitsua60 Topically, I just had the worst nap ever. Y'know that thing kids do, where they think that talking to you in a whisper means they're not "really" waking you up?

@Shalvenay In CT that's pretty well covered by the skills one learns. Picking up two ranks in medic, for instance, puts you at the level of "could be gainfully employed as a general practitioner/ship's doctor"

@Ben ah :P was more wondering if you were dealing with run-of-the-mill Bohr bugs, or something crazyweird xD

@SevenSidedDie you must have a three year-old?

Ben
@Shalvenay Fortunately no haha

@nitsua60 yeah -- I was thinking that "Trade" would be one of the skill table categories

Ben
1:36 AM
Just oversight

@SevenSidedDie I thought so, but it was worth asking in chat at least.

@Shalvenay You mean like Heisenbugs?

@Adeptus yeah, or just plain weird stuff

If the answer were more interesting, I'd take it to main site.

@nitsua60 Eight. It's one of those peculiar things she hasn't grown out of. Maybe it's the only-child-ness. :)

1:40 AM
hmm... I'll let you know how my N=3 experiment develops along those lines in the next one-to-five years =)

@BESW I bet there is a rescaling of the damage dice possible since SH is already doing a translation step for that, but it would take testing and would likely need familiarity with the three different games.

Yeah, and I'm partly looking at SH to remove the need to learn old school systems but still enjoy their modules.
Get a taste of tradition.

@BESW Hm, yeah. 5e harks back in a lot of ways, but not in rolling back the numerical inflation. No 1hp wizards or goblins in 5e!
Why, are there 5e adventures you had your eye on?

Not specifically. My question about 5e adventures went off topic before I got any satisfactory answers.
But it'd have been something interesting to try for comparison

@nitsua60 -- I'm thinking that the "commission/no commission" divide might have something to do with my concept of "base" classes vs "ranking" ones...i.e. if you start off on the charismatic path, you don't start off learning how to do paladin-things straight-away, for example

1:54 AM
I'm thinking of the skills/&c. one acquires more as suites/ensembles, not paths. (Though that may be where some of the trouble's coming from.) Is your thinking that there'd be something like a "base" charismatic table which holds things common to all charismatic classes, then the "advanced" table has those which differentiate?

@nitsua60 kinda -- the "advanced" would be for those who get a commission or such

@Shalvenay so, in my vague antiquity/medieval generic setting notion, I'm imagining something like apprenticeship & journeyman theme to the process.

@nitsua60 right

(so "commission" -> "graduation" or whatever one called the transition from apprentice to journeyman)

Ben
Who likes D&D jokes

2:02 AM
Are they about skeletal structure? 'cause that one killed!
@Ben [sorry, had to] Lay them on us...

Ben
@nitsua60 badum-tss
Ok, well here goes:
4th Edition
[Shots fired]
Or a better joke:

(All the crickets)

Ben
Why didn't the barbarian multiclass as a wizard? He couldn't spell

okay--that one got a laugh from me

@Ben snickers
@nitsua60 as to what the equivalent of promotion would be?

Ben
2:08 AM
How do you know if there's a Paladin in the party?Trust me, you'll know.

alright, 2-for-3 so far

Ben
Two gnolls are sitting in the woods eating lunch. One says "Man, I hate my wife" and the other one says "Then just eat the salad".

that's funny: gnolls eating salad =)

Ben
I'll leave it there for now lol. Too many is always too much

2:26 AM
yeeeeessss more puns
soon they shall take over this place
or maybe just the not a bar

@Ben Gnolls being hyena-people, the genders should probably be reversed. Male hyenas are kittens, relatively.

yeah, almost praying mantis level
male hyenas apparently let the females walk all over them,.. not necessarily in a literal sense, but I don't know XD
maybe literally too XD

@SevenSidedDie yes -- gnoll ladies take guff from nobody

night, all

Ben
\o

3:02 AM
@Ben so -- catch you about 22-24h from now btw?

1 hour later…
Ben
4:22 AM
@Shalvenay Oh, yeah sounds good :) I wanna give some new tactics a try :D

@Ben Duh duh DUHH!

4:43 AM
new tactics are apparently very dramatic

@trogdor Context: They're planning a PVP session.

ah ok
that is pretty dramatic

Not dramatic so much as a veiled threat.
Which is actually pretty dramatic, thinking about it.

there we go

@trogdor Yeah, it's been a long week.

4:50 AM

@Adeptus That's fast enough that my brain tries to parse it left to right, with interesting results.

@Miniman MUD MUD !MMMUD

@Miniman yeah I actually just got done with some of the most intense work I have done in a long time
you might say it is somewhat of a crunch time here

@trogdor What sort of thing?

this week we have been cataloging pictures for ID's for an upcoming festival called FestPac
I don't know if you have heard of this thing
its a big deal here because we get to host it this year
as an island I mean, not as a workplace because jeez would that be crowded

4:54 AM
@trogdor Yeah, I'm guessing a big part of the reason I haven't heard of it is that the last time it was in Australia was before I was born XD

on top of that,.... I don't like to complain,... but to keep it simple and short some people just aren't doing any work
@Miniman yeah, because of the fact that you are from Australia, I thought it was at least even odds that you had heard of it
but also entirely possible that you had not

It sounds interesting though.

I don't think I had any real idea it was a thing until around this year
I had possibly heard of it before and just forgotten or ignored it
but that is not a thing that was even possible to do this year because Guam is hosting it, so of course all the people are bringing it up XD
and of course, in the last few months my job has been directly connected to it in one way or another XD
so it was super extra impossible to have absolutely no idea what it is

@trogdor What sort of thing do you normally do? If you don't mind my asking, of course.

@Miniman normally is a strong word XD

4:59 AM
@trogdor Heh

I have been working between 3D modeling, website development, doing various things with pictures, and I think a couple other minor things,... but I can't remember what those smaller things were

@trogdor What framework for web development?

for the first two I have found myself really interested in them and good at them,... for the last thing it has been the closest to soul crushing work I have ever personally experienced,...
@Miniman a couple different programs, FTDev, FTBeaver, and Webflow
I am still technically in training
though I have gotten better at using those programs than some of the people who are supposed to be teaching me (but not all)

@trogdor That's a familiar story.

I am blessed to have so far found an occupation in which I am a pretty fast learner

5:05 AM
@trogdor And which interests you! That's a big deal.

yes it is
well, not this weeks work, but all the rest of it up to now has XD
there is no such thing as a "perfect" job unless you employ yourself

@trogdor I'd suggest even then it's still a virtual impossibility.

yeah
it's just a little more likely after that
I mean, one good thing would be that you can entirely define your actual job description
XD
and you would have no boss, at least on paper
your boss would most likely end up being your customers though
so that isn't always going to be an ideal thing
because your boss will be a bunch of completely different people with different levels of current rationality from day to day XD
and I don't personally dislike my boss, though I can definitely see how it might at least feel liberating to not have one
I imagine a lot of people feel that way to some degree, though there are probably also plenty of people who don't like their bosses for some reason or other, for "legitimate" reasons or not

5:20 AM
@trogdor It's interesting - I honestly think I'd go a little crazy without a boss.
Or at least someone to provide direction.

yeah, there is an element of that
I do like that someone else is figuring out what I should be doing, and most of what I have to worry about is actually getting it done
in some cases I do wish a better job had been done on the figuring out end, but if I was trying to do both things I do think it might likely fall apart on at least one side
it's a lessening of responsibility to some degree if the work is lined up for you already

5:38 AM
Actual joke told at a bar in a D&D campaign of mine: An orc walks into a bar, but the human ducks and the halfling just walks underneath it.

5:57 AM
@BESW The barman kicks the elf out for brazen usage of invisibility spells.

lol

1 hour later…

7:50 AM
@BESW Because it's a shared setting?

Yeah.

A: Are campaign research questions on topic, part two?

doppelgreenerNo, not unless they are truly RPG-centric. A Summary: What to do Add a section to our FAQ defining what is on topic or off topic. A: Are 'fluff' setting related questions relevant?

BESWIf it's RPG-setting-specific and meets the other site guidelines for questions, they're fine. A question about the Lovecraftian Mythos would be better off in the Science Fiction & Fantasy SE, but questions about the 4e Points of Light setting are on topic here. The reason for this is that we ca...

8:30 AM
I've got some broad strokes for an NPC for tomorrow night's game (spoilers!), but would welcome suggestions for specifics.

Hello.

[wave]

So, yeah.

8:43 AM
I'm looking for a good RPG ramblings website name. It has to be un-pompous and not self-important. Bonus points for tentacle puns. Anyone has any ideas?

@eimyr Illithid Vomit.

I can see chunks of brains already.

Eimyr's Meandering Black Tentacles .
4

Can we avoid trademarked names though?
Sounds juicy.

@eimyr And carrot. Because there's always carrot.

8:48 AM
Or Eimyr's Griping Black Tentacles.

EGBT?
I'd get a lot of misguided hits

Evil Geniuses for a Better Tomorrow?
Because they're EGfaBT.

I'm not sure I have any geniuses in stock.

I'm just trying to figure out what people will be looking for if they get you by mistake.

Last time I asked here for names I got the best name ever.

8:52 AM
@eimyr A Sucker for Games.

wow

1d3 Gamers Each Round

OK, that is something that goes on the shortlist

Noisome Natterings
Tabletop Tendrils?

hm hm hm
Malicious Mollusc

9:04 AM
That just sounds like Octodad's evil alternate universe twin.

lol
mmm Octodad XD

@trogdor maybe you have some ideas too?

9:33 AM
@BESW How about Tentacle Theory?
or Theorist?

Tentorist?

Could be.

10:38 AM
I sigh a little inside when a 12k user makes a comment on their new answer to an old question apologising for necroing

@Wibbs Jinx.

@Wibbs #sodeep

@eimyr tentacles of BURNINATION?

@trogdor At the moment I'm truly leaning towards Tentacle Theory or Tentacle Theorist, but I'm not sure which to choose.

I suppose I would lean towards the second one

10:43 AM
Neither really says "game."

it's an alliteration, easy enough to pronounce, but I'm unsure which one is easier to remember

they don't that is true

@BESW I really like the "theory" bit. I'm not sure how to incorporate "game" into it.

Tabletop Tentacle Theor(y)/(ist)

Playful Tentacle sounds like an adult website and Game Theorist is already taken

10:46 AM
Tactical Tentacle Theor(y)/(ist)

too long!
also, I'm not at all about tactics, Tabletop Tentacle IS reasonably good.
I think I can only get away with two words at most

that is quite a restriction
though I think I understand why

Unless there are three short words

if it gets too wordy people will not want to check it out as much, or will just have more trouble finding it

like, I don't know Git's Game Greed

10:54 AM
@eimyr adding tentacle into the name does carry that risk yes

There is a webcomic I like, called Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell. Before he changed the domain to gunnerkrigg.com it used to be gunnerkriggcourt.com. Endless misspellings.

lol

by the time I was at "court" bit I've already misspelled gunnerkrigg twice
now I not only get it right the first time, but also know what the court name is, not just "gunersomething court"

I am not surprised

see? even now I misspelled it in the first message

10:56 AM
it does seem hard to spell

but the comic is worth trying

11:15 AM
I'm gonna update the Cool Stuff pin soon. Anybody got something to add?

11:33 AM
@SevenSidedDie So, what do we do if folks from a different chat culture make their own RPG.SE-associated room and start dropping f-bombs, and don't respond well to suggestions to tone it down?

@BESW Is there such a room?

Yes. Yes, there is.

It was easier to find than I thought.

11:53 AM

@BESW thanks

I knew it'd need to escalate to mods as soon as they started in on "Who are you?"
@mxyzplk I only pinged SSD 'cause I usually see you on later at night than this, but thanks for coming in. I didn't expect it to precipitate a bunch of flags, though.
@DavidPostill Hi!

@BESW Hi.

@DavidPostill Hello

Popped in because I saw some flagging ...
Looks like everything is under control ;)

12:03 PM
yep, got it, thanks

Yeah, got some folks in from another site who are used to less Be-Nice enforcement.
It's nice to know there's always folks who're on top of things, thanks for dropping in.

I swear to god, whenever TV-shows artificially age some kid, I lose like, 10 whole points of interest in the show. :P

@WilliamMariager Have you watched the Vikings?

@eimyr Only first season. I really gotta get back to that again.
Wait, do they age kids there too?

@WilliamMariager Welp, after like a couple years worth of timeskip Bjorn is played by Alexander Ludwig.
@BESW Aww, I clicked "conventions" and US-centrism got me disappointed again.

@eimyr Got a more global link for me?

12:27 PM
nope
I don't think such a link exists, but I got my hopes up
UK does not have a reliable link like that, maybe philmasters.org.uk/RPGs/conventions.htm but still missing a lot major entries.
Outside these language is a barrier

@eimyr The UK section of this site isn't any good?

wait, there is one!: gameconventioncentral.com
I missed the top bar
Hmmm... the list is reasonably good, but it's outdated, there is none for 2016
so I wouldn't necessarily depend on it as much as your much better US link

...Aw, you're right.

It's still OK for manual research.
I have a simple criterium - if it has 7hills from Sheffield, a medium-ish weekend con I went to this year (about 7-8 parallel games) it's good for UK

@eimyr I feel you.

12:40 PM
Okay, let's try this.

[changes hats] Y NO PLcons?!
I can do this all day :D

@eimyr Got a link? [can also do this all day]

Isn't there a limit to your message length?
Or can you as a mod room owner paste War and Peace into chat and star it?

Forcing carriage returns extends the limit ridiculously.

Can you get muted in your own room for spam/flood?

12:44 PM
Probably.

If only you could force it to not shorten the message.

No, that's legit. I don't want pins to overshadow the dynamic stars that the whole chat gets to decide on.

Then at least an expand button.
Loading up the link in a new tab/windows is a big barrier ux wise.

Aye. That's why I list 'em chronologically so the stuff that's hidden is a long time coming.
Usually there's not more material than the pin can show all at once, but a few days ago I did a Kickstarter delve to try and diversify the pin outside my own Fate-focused interests.
Nobody else was making suggestions for the pin content, and relying on just my feeds narrows the focus pretty sharply.

I made one recently, but it was unfortunately too close to finish.

12:52 PM
Yeah, not sure how I missed that one in my trawl.

But in general, yeah, it's one of the four people who make up BESW who exclusively manages the feeds. Kudos.

1:27 PM
@eimyr @BESW is siamese quadruplets? Interesting...

i don't find it very convincing tho

@BESW Oh, well that's not nearly as interesting... :)

Yeah, turns out I'm actually pretty boring.

1:57 PM
yes
well
being a hivemind isn't all that bad

@trogdor the problem with not having a boss is that you're the boss. Anything that makes you not a good employee: they're your problem now. Also, anything that makes you not a good boss: they're your problem too.

@nitsua60 As a self-employed sole proprietor of a business of one, all of that.

I found this question and immediately thought it's an off-topic social issue. Turns out the top answer would still be right even if it was.

2:13 PM
> You can't give consent when you're unconscious.
generally a pretty universal important thing

I can support that.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.

2:32 PM
I will just leave this here

No! Not here. Over there.

Last two are Dratini -> Dragonair

@JoshuaAslanSmith honestly the thing i like most about this image is you could tell me it was made after, and making fun of, any particular generation and i'd believe you

yeah I have no idea myself

2:39 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I just linked it the other day
had a great laugh over it :)

Full english is particularly choice in my opinion

it only started making the rounds this past week so it's probably current(ish)

I love wowoman

[brief research]

and flatpak/wardroab evolution

yes very ikea appropriate

@eimyr I think that's my favourite.

Traf being fart spelled backward is pretty choice as well

I personally would rename Quakstak to Quakpounder, but that's just me.

2:44 PM

The wardrobe sort of makes it obvious which generation its after

not to me, @Waterseas

I stopped after gold and silver
I aged out

Actually, suppose it could be gen 5 or gen 6
I still love pokemon XD

Though there are plenty of people I know my age who got hype about ruby and emeraled

2:46 PM
License plate is "Espeon" and everything

I like the idea of pokemon but its like a JRP, I just dont have x amount of time for any sort of grinding

Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald are my favorite games, still >50% of pokemon are well designed, and game felt great

I'll sink a ton of hours into a game like Civ 5 or Witcher 3, but grinding to level is my bane

@JoshuaAslanSmith Have you tried Crusader Kings 2?

@eimyr The game where I try to take over europe frome ireland (because its an island) but invariably a pretender only loosly affiliated from a marraige 3 generations ago who is heir to a massive kingship declares war on me
its a great educational tool though
Start some one off as king of the HRE
*emperor
everything about medieval and Renaissance politics makes perfect sense

2:49 PM
In the course of reading about gulags, I found the most terrifying etymology for a place name I've ever seen https://t.co/rZM4NQXMBG

yeahhhhh
@besw wave

Yes, also the game where you establish a totalitarian eugenics regime to breed the perfect heir and ruthlessly murder failed experiments until you learn that your one and only ended up crazy.

I always find it interesting when you are assassinated and then start controlling your half brother whomever just killed you

[wave]

[tsunami]

2:52 PM
[sleep]

I love it when I'm 70 and my heir is 10 or 11 and I'm like GROW UP ALREADY!

Total War @JoshuaAslanSmith?

so in CK2 you always are in control of the leader of your line, and when said leader dies it moves ot the next person to inherit based on the laws and customs of your realm
usually that is the next viable male
so usually said male was the one who plotted to kil you
because being the kings brother aint so great as being the king

And this is why GoT has second-sons encouraged to take the black. :)

I mean in most cases being in the church did not prevent you from inheriting titles, specifically in Britain, it just meant you would most likely not have a direct line heir, but it was quite common for a title to move from brother ot priest borther and then to the nephew (son of the original)
