@Shalvenay so basically the commission roll acts as a gateway for the promotions. You can imagine tweaking the balance between the two to provide a catchup mechanic (promotions get harder with rank) or to produce more "spread" (high commission roll, low promotions). Lots of little dials....

Of course that all comes from the conceit of CT: all PCs start play with some military experience. (Ignoring, for the moment, "other" service.)
In ZtH I've been toying with the idea of having separate 'training' vs. 'adventuring' tables in the place of that structure.

@BESW Probably not. The hit point and damage scaling are so different that 5e adventure's monsters would probably have a significant damage output advantage over a Scarlet Hero.

@Shalvenay In CT that's pretty well covered by the skills one learns. Picking up two ranks in medic, for instance, puts you at the level of "could be gainfully employed as a general practitioner/ship's doctor"

@BESW I bet there is a rescaling of the damage dice possible since SH is already doing a translation step for that, but it would take testing and would likely need familiarity with the three different games.

Yeah, and I'm partly looking at SH to remove the need to learn old school systems but still enjoy their modules.

@nitsua60 -- I'm thinking that the "commission/no commission" divide might have something to do with my concept of "base" classes vs "ranking" ones...i.e. if you start off on the charismatic path, you don't start off learning how to do paladin-things straight-away, for example

I'm thinking of the skills/&c. one acquires more as suites/ensembles, not paths. (Though that may be where some of the trouble's coming from.) Is your thinking that there'd be something like a "base" charismatic table which holds things common to all charismatic classes, then the "advanced" table has those which differentiate?

I had possibly heard of it before and just forgotten or ignored it

but that is not a thing that was even possible to do this year because Guam is hosting it, so of course all the people are bringing it up XD

and of course, in the last few months my job has been directly connected to it in one way or another XD

so it was super extra impossible to have absolutely no idea what it is

I mean, one good thing would be that you can entirely define your actual job description

and you would have no boss, at least on paper

your boss would most likely end up being your customers though

so that isn't always going to be an ideal thing

because your boss will be a bunch of completely different people with different levels of current rationality from day to day XD

and I don't personally dislike my boss, though I can definitely see how it might at least feel liberating to not have one

I imagine a lot of people feel that way to some degree, though there are probably also plenty of people who don't like their bosses for some reason or other, for "legitimate" reasons or not

yeah, there is an element of that

I do like that someone else is figuring out what I should be doing, and most of what I have to worry about is actually getting it done

in some cases I do wish a better job had been done on the figuring out end, but if I was trying to do both things I do think it might likely fall apart on at least one side

it's a lessening of responsibility to some degree if the work is lined up for you already
