@Mołot Thanks and sorry that it kept telling you an edit had been made. I tend to miss things until I've actually posted and they don't get added to the revision because I'm the first editor and its within X minutes of posting.
Step 1: Put a creature who isn't mythic to sleep for 1 round, no save. (Using 1 mythic ability that worked as was designed, until other) Step 2: Use a *4 crit weapon to Coup. Step 3: Profit.
> A monster’s mythic rank (MR) is a game statistic for monsters that’s roughly equivalent to a mythic tier— monsters with only a little mythic power are 1st rank, and the greatest mythic monsters are 10th rank. Unlike PCs, monsters usually start with a specific mythic rank and that rank never changes.
> (For example, a mythic troll is 2nd rank and is always going to be 2nd rank, unless the GM has a reason for its rank to increase—like if a tribe of trolls has an artifact that grants the trolls mythic power, and the longer it takes the PCs to deal with them, the more powerful the artifact makes these monsters.)
> A creature shouldn’t have both a mythic tier and a mythic rank. [...] Mythic templates and other effects that grant a creature a mythic rank should include information about what happens when a mythic creature gains that template or effect.
I don't really care what kind of mythic rank or tier is has Metool, that is not the point. The point is that if it was "Mythic" in some way, I would have no been able to make it die without a save.
Considering that D&D and PF revolve heavily around the cool lewt aspect, that's gutting it alot. I've played games like that but this concept won't be able to run in a low magic item game.
@JeorMattan Personally if I was told to do a low op game I would start taking feats and such that I found cool instead of seaking out the feats that I know give me a mechanical bonus.
@Dorian Did you finish that class you were making?
And regularly dismantling/destroying said magic items lol.
Hmm well if that's the case... I'd still be trying to collect wayfinders as well (which can also be destroyed given an unlucky roll with an ioun stone being plugged into it.
@Aaron yeah, so I'm aiming at the speech wild shape feats. Unfortunately, I made a mistake of taking tiger as my animal companion and now I can't invent an in-character reason not to wild shape into the said tiger.. which will get me pounce at 6th level an is deemed excessive op for the game in question.
@Aaron Not a class. It was standalone magic item mechanics. Basically expanding on wayfinder and ioun stone mechanics. And I didn't even start on it because I assumed low magic item game lol
@Aaron For the most part, Wayfinders have some immensely useful abilities, but those that do are also immensely expensive to begin with. Their most useful trait is the ability to synergize with ioun stones and make some good effects.
The abilities built into wayfinders are actually reduced or eliminated when you plug in various Ioun stones. Though plugging the stones in risks destroying both the stone and the wayfinder if you're unlucky with the roll.
> This item is a heavy gem of quartz, or a mineral of similar value, set on a thick silver chain. The gem is hinged and hollow, with two spaces inside. Each space can hold a single ioun stone, which continues to function normally despite not being in orbit around the wearer. If it holds no ioun stones, the gem can be used to cast detect magic at will.
But yeah, that Ioun Gem sounds pretty close to a Wayfinder except it isn't a Wayfinder. My character may want to investigate that as well at some point.
Afterall she intends to study the magics of Ioun Stones and Wayfinders and learn how to create Wayfinders, as well as a Caster Gun.
@JeorMattan Have you explained the situation to your DM? If he is really that adamant about it he should assist you in finding a reason to not wildshape into a tiger
(essentially using the coils and the like from Wayfinders and building a gun out of them, and using damaged/flawed/destroyed Ioun Stones to create "Caster Rounds" of varying strengths)
@Dorian Looking at the wayfinders they don't seem that powerful. This other system you want to make though what would it be comparable to? Scrolls, Potions or something else?
Say a single Ioun Stone spread out over 50 rounds might be comparable to a lv1 spell wand (though the specifics I haven't figured out yet so the precise amount of "charges"/bullets and the actual power and effect of each shot I'm unsure of right now)
The problem is D&D at its heart is a combat game. And classes have a linear to exponential power increase. He is trying to run a game that has a roughly log increase
In other words, there's no way she'll start off in the game being able to actually make these.
No way she'll be able to make them at lv1. The point of this was to study, learn, and slowly build up research materials and testing the items in-game seeking to build the stuff.
It would use parts from Wayfinders in order to actually work with the Ioun Stones.
She would need to craft the special gun using expensive materials, craft the special bullets for this, and study and enhance the gun over time.
Early on it won't be capable of delivering massive shots, but the more I upgrade it the more potential power output it could have if I have enough fuel for the shot. The fuel being Ioun Stones.
Alrighty. The hard part will be determining the craft/spellcraft DCs for each stage lol
@Mourdos the reason I say she won't be able to do this early on is because it's not a special class benefit. This is something she's studying/researching/creating that anyone can use.
Her class is likely going to be Gunslinger and something else. Possibly Magus.
@JeorMattan Yeah but wildshaping is a standard class feature and tiger is a standard companion...it's like complaining because a fighter picks up the feat cleave or similar... or even worse it's like complaining because a wizard can cast fireball...
Essentially, it's an in-character research project to unveil the secrets of how Wayfinders draw more power from Ioun Stones, and in turn weaponize this ability.
With luck, she'd create a whole new class of weapon.
@Aaron Aye, but I don't think anything in Path of War actually suits the concept. IDK about Psionics though I'd have to look at them a bit more. The main reason I wanted an arcane caster is because of the magics involved in Wayfinders and Ioun Stones.
The character will almost certainly have at least three weapons. A normal firearm (gunslinger standard requirement lol), a normal melee weapon suitable to her, and her personal caster gun.
I will also likely develop multiple new Wayfinders over the course of the game with any luck.
This is the first time I'm attempting to undertake a serious long-term goal in a campaign. And the first time I'm attempting to focus a character's build and motivation around crafting stuff.
@Mourdos I realize this, but it's not designed to be a class feature but rather something anyone can use. Once she has the hang of it I intend for her to make more of them to sell ;)
If she is able to get the resources/connections/etc than she will likely build a small factory (leadership feat probably over time)
@Aaron Yeah, that's the main concern I have with this project in this game. If crafting is limited and magic items are limited, than not only will this be exponentially more difficult for me to achieve in character, but it might be impossible.
She does afterall intend to merge science and magic and create magitech weapons
@Aaron I'm wary of another "I'm all about crafting" character in a game, because the Nautilus already takes up faaar too much time and attention and talking about cool things that can be built for it.
@Aaron Oh right that. I thought you were talking about the standard Gunslinger firearm building.
Yes, a single feat should cover starting her being able to research/craft these items.
And she will only need probably three or four skills to relate to these. Knowledge (Arcana) and perhaps (Engineering), Craft (Gunsmithing), and Spellcraft (maybe)
Looking at the Ioun stones though how are you going to determine the effects? They all have beneficial effects but you want offensive abilities from them. How do you go from +2 str to damage?
What I was likely to do was compare the cost/caster levels of each Ioun Stone and establish that each one had the capacity for certain power levels based on the concentration of the stone in the rounds. The actual magical effect would be determined by the formula used in the round itself.
The Ioun Stone determines the power, and the rest of the contents of the round would determine the "spell" effect. I guess.
Which is why I would need Spellcraft and Knowledge (Arcana) most likely. The Knowledge (Arcana) would be to research and determine possible formulae, and the Spellcraft would be to create each round.
Craft (Gunsmithing) or Craft (Wayfinder) or something like that would be to create new Wayfinders and to create the Caster Gun. Knowledge (Engineering) (of if there's a specific gunsmithing knowledge I'd use that one) would be to design blueprints for the gun.
I guess an example would be if I didn't have anything but I had the proper supplies I'd need to make multiple checks in order to create both a working Caster Gun and the ammunition for it.
Knowledge (Engineering) to draw up a blueprint for the gun. Craft (Gunsmithing) to actually create the gun. Knowledge (Arcana) to design a formula of various magical components and Ioun Stone material Spellcraft (Or perhaps Craft (Caster Ammo)) to create the actual round(s).
I think he was objecting more to the fact that I trivialized his encounter with summons. Solving problems with me was difficult, as the fix just meant I stat around on my eidolon using one summon spell at once.
@Mourdos And yes, it will be expensive. Which is why she intended on hoarding Ioun Stones. And why each time it is used it will be used because it was needed.(until she can find a cheaper way to create bullets, perhaps synthesized Ioun Stones in the future? that'd likely be a near epic to epic leveled accomplishment though)
It still sounds like you want to just use scrolls of powerful spells, fluffed as using a gun and ioun stone with some crafting. I guess I'll understand it more once you propose your system
@JeorMattan message two up from this about the summoner was for you :P
That is about accurate. Though I had no idea of the magic item restrictions when I thought up the idea.
I mainly wanted an interesting project.
I read up on Ioun Stones and Wayfinders by chance while looking for magic items to buy for my evil campaign, and I thought it might be an interesting idea to have a reason to hoard and study those two items.
The caster gun actually came after the fact, when I was trying to figure out how else I could use these items. It was like a brilliant bolt of lightning when the idea hit me lol
(the original idea was simply hoard ioun stones and wayfinders and possibly make a giant wayfinder that held a ton of ioun stones lol)
Think Yuffie with her Materia obsession ;)
Now my problem is getting an art drawn of my character...
Because tbh, I have an incredibly detailed idea in my head, and /tg/ doesn't often like giant requests (saying I should commission someone instead usually)
My requests are usually detailed, but this one's a doozy. I even sketched a bit of it myself to help someone understand what I'm going for lol
And I would commission someone to do it if I could afford to lol
I had one commission done by F-AYN-T on dA for a game. Loved the result. Problem is that character sadly died very soon into the game :( I spent bucks on the commission too...
No way I'm going to let that commission go to waste though. It was my first and only commission I purchased, and I wanted the character drawn up regardless of the game anyways.
She also sent me a version without the ghostly silhouettes which is pretty nice. I did request the spirits, but it's convenient to have a pic without them too since I might use her in a setting that doesn't have similar entities.
I'm glad her prices are reasonable. Many of the artists I wind up wanting to commission their prices easily reach the triple digits for anything colored...
I may commission her again for my half faerie dragon girl. Undecided though, and it will depend on me having money again lol. Most likely won't be able to get it done before the new year though both due to finances and also because many artists stop commission work around the holidays.
(conversely, some actually only commission around the holidays but IDK F-AYN-T's style)
Got a couple pseudodragon and pokemon arts from winning kiribans and from artists still doing requests. Got a bunch of stuff off of drawthreads on 4chan also.
@JeorMattan The problem with summoners is that they can solve every problem, they use SLA rather than spells, and they break the action economy hard. And I don't just mean them getting haste earlier than anyone else...I mean taking 5 actions a round was common. He could easily cast 3 or 4 spells per round (by summoning things that cast for him) for example
The only reason it lasted as long as it did is because he held back but he could easily have solod any level-appropriate encounter
and anything I played that would challenge/threaten him would wipe out the rest of the party

Didn't get any results, but it's possible to do it.
@TimB can solve every problem? sounds like a kind of wizard to me. =) it can be more or less pronounced, but every tier 1 class does that. that's, like, the definition of tier 1.
Just in time for the holidays: stickers, pins & T-shirts from @ursulav 's GN, Digger, for sale on our website now! https://www.sofawolf.com/news/blog/new-digger-products-
The game bundle looks pretty good right now too. I don't actually have Space Channel No. 5 on anything yet. Although I'd probably rather have it on a console... yeah I need that. xD
