5:00 PM
@PatLudwig well, anything of a non-4e system. some of the system-agnostic stuff I am a bit more discerning with
0
A: As a GM, how does one deal with all of the players playing nearly identical characters?

ChadWell you could try pregenerating some characters and letting the group choose from them. They havent played so the do not know what to do. Do not put a gunslinger in the pile. Let them play a few games then if one or more wants to create new characters now that the see how the game is played i...

This answer gave me a horrible idea. a party of D&D clerics who refused to adventure. The entire campaign becomes a RP game of Sim-Temple...how horrible would that be

5:46 PM
welkkomen
or however you spell that

@waxeagle Herzlich Wilkommen!

@GPierce yeah I exhausted all of my civilized german with the poorly spelled welcome :)

@waxeagle Close enough! I understood what you meant!
And language is but a tool to convey meaning, which you did! (albeit horridly misspelled! :D)

@GPierce indeed
this is why txting actually works...

i loathe text speak

5:50 PM
@GPierce its awful, don't get me wrong

My texts read like essays. I am only loose on the capitalization (because it is a pain on my phone)

@GPierce same here, though caps tend to be ok for me. My spelling is rarely abreviated and I am often over the char cap...
btw that is something worth considering if you do move carriers, V has a strict char cap and if you over run it your message becomes two

Wow, you'd think that feral kitty would hate me after yesterday (it biting me, me moving it inside and bathing it) (s)he just spent 10 minutes rubbing h(er/is) face all over mine
@waxeagle I often do this. My phone's character cap is enough for a sentence or two or normal/decent size. After that it rolls into another message. It is not uncommon for me to end up sending it split amongst 3 or 4 messages

@GPierce thats good. Cats are interesting animals
@GPierce ick

@waxeagle I'm a dog guy, so this is definitely an experience.
My lady has been bugging me for a cat since we moved in together. So she is thrilled that I relented to rescuing this poor thing. (Though, I couldn't just leave it there... I have a bleeding heart when it comes to animals of all kinds)

5:55 PM
@GPierce lol good deal. My wife isn't happy unless there is a cat around. Unfortunately our cat experiences have been good, but rather short lived.

@waxeagle I've always joked about having a menagerie of animals.. It looks like it's started. 2 dogs, 1 kitten. I wonder what's next.

@GPierce I'd shy away from rodents for the time being...maybe a fish or two? Betas are nice, cheap and incredibly low maint :)

@waxeagle I cannot stand rodents, actually. Had a hamster as a kid and got bit all of the time.
@waxeagle Fish are... boring. But very pretty to look at.

@GPierce you obviously haven't had a 2yr old :)

I do like ferrets. But no new pets for awhile

5:58 PM
@GPierce good plan...

6:09 PM
hmmm
I like @dpatchery 's ritual Q but don"t think the 1st A is very good. it completely ignored the levels asked for...

@GPierce agreed
@GPierce I am honestly not sure why its been upvoted.
but I'm also not sure I feel strongly enough to downvote

@waxeagle same. it does offer up some good low level rituals
it's half on target...

@GPierce exactly. Its begging for someone to come along and fill in the other half. Oh well, I am certain that someone who knows rituals well will come along and give it a proper answer. I don't have the time to sit down with the compendium (I also don't really have the know how)

@waxeagle Yeah, sadly my ritual usage is limited. Again, undervalued/used tool.

@GPierce score! my difficult dread player q just hit nice q status :)

6:15 PM
@waxeagle awesome
Any good answers yet?

@GPierce Rain gave one. His dread answers have been top notch

Hmmm
do you think Heroscape would fall under RP or BG SEs?

@GPierce good question. Let me wikipedia it quick a minute

@waxeagle In a way.. it's kind of both.

@GPierce yup especially because D&D has put out some products in the line.
they have 4-5 miniatures qs over at BG

6:20 PM
@waxeagle I only saw one HS Q over at BG
And I don't recall seeing any here

@PatLudwig ping!
@GPierce Pat is a mod over there, he can give you the best advice on the subject

@waxeagle Good call!

not sure where wargaming in general fits between the two.

@waxeagle It's a gray spot, for sure

@GPierce yeah, neither community seems to cover it particularly well.

6:23 PM
@waxeagle I could argue it well for both sites

@DForck42 hello, welcome to chat

@DForck42 Howdy!

@GPierce same here. Or you could hit A51 and propose it :)

@waxeagle Hmmm

and in a year or two when its live someone can answer your question :)

6:24 PM
Or update either site to specifically state if it includes it or not

hello

@GPierce yup.
@DForck42 good afternoon

how's it going?

@DForck42 good. another 1:20 to quitting time. Then its home and then game night :)

@DForck42 It's going! We're just having a friendly discussion/debate over whether Heroscape would belong here, on RPG.SE, or on the board game SE.

6:26 PM
@GPierce, yeah i saw that, it's a good question

@GPierce and on that note might as well ping @cross too

@was eagle, what cha going to be playing?

@DForck42 we are playing Dread tonight. I am hosting
(hence all of the dread qs from the the last few days)

@wax eagle, ah, yes, i noticed

@waxeagle Watch out, next thing you know you are going to be DMing D&D!

6:28 PM
@GPierce I'm sure I will at some point. but I like playing so darn much

@wax eagle, well if you pay enough attention you can tell i just started Dresden Files RPG

@DForck42 if you want to reply direct in chat you can click the little reply symbol on teh far right of a post

@waxeagle I like both about equally. I definitely want to play some 4e sometime soon. But DMing works for the time being

@waxeagle ok

@DForck42 I've been on your profile a couple of times in the past couple of days and noticed that

6:30 PM
i had a 4e group going, but it fell to the toilet
@waxeagle uh-oh! i've been noticed!

Q: When does a monster actually die?

SnowbodyMost of the time, monsters are Bloodied when they reach half their HP or so, and become Unconscious and Dying (forced to make death saving throws) when they reach 0 HP remaining. Unless, of course, the player declares non-lethal damage for the last hit, in which case they're just Unconscious. Si...

@TheOracle Oooo, good Q!
I believe it is negative Con score or 3 failed death saving throws, whatever comes first

@DForck42 meh, its really nothing special, I usually check out users that post questions.

But then again, DMG suggests just having them die when they go to zero

@GPierce in 4e its negative bloodied or 3 failed throws
but lets be honest, taht would take forever. Can't we just stick to 0hp is dead and be done with it?

6:33 PM
@waxeagle I just treat it as dead at 0hp

interrogations just lead to torture or PCs doing horrible things (often ultimately summary executions etc)...at least in my experience
unless a critter is plot critical 0hp should be dead
or is a zombie

@waxeagle Now, if it hits -1 and it's only 2 rounds later and the party wants to spend a potion or spell on it... sure, i'd allow it

@GPierce sure, but unless that monster is darn important why are you goign to spend 100 gp to revive it...

@waxeagle Exactly...

@waxeagle heh, yeah pretty much

6:34 PM
Some groups are like that though. Especially if they think they can get something out of it.

@GPierce most monsters do have surges though, so potions would work, uses of a cleric's healing word or leader equiv would work too

@waxeagle Even if they didn't have a surge they'd just go to 1 hp

@waxeagle unless it's undead ;)

@GPierce I have a feeling our current L1 group partly evil group might just feed monsters healing potions so we can kill them again :). Our DM gave us 24 before we even did anything...
@GPierce good point
and nearly handed us a bag of duplication..

Oh D&D 43 semantics loop holes
4E
I generally give my groups a starting potion or two, depending on level

6:37 PM
@GPierce this was L1. no way we should have 2400 gp worth of stuff between us...

I also have my potions scale.. Because it sucks to be a fighter with a surge value of 13 and have to spend a surge to only regain 10 hp from a potion..

@GPierce yeah, but without a cleric it's nice to have them in longer fights

@DForck42 I agree. It just seems they are getting gipped 3 hp when they had to pay the same amount for 10 that they'd normally get 13 for.

@GPierce ah, but thats part of the issue, its an action economy item, it costs money and hp to use for a fighter, givign up their standard which is more useful elsewhere. For a wizard they have other action options but they may regain more hp.

I've seen a nice homebrew ruling on the net that has potions scale like Healing Word

6:39 PM
@GPierce I have seen that suggested around here for use in single or 2 player games

@GPierce oooh, that's nice

@waxeagle I could probably argue effectively for scaling potions and regular potions. once again, a 4e gray area

@GPierce very true. There are good arguments both ways

I think it would be hard until later levels to determine if scaling potions would be game-breaking or not

@GPierce I will say that now that our characters are L7 an HP is a terrible choice for my fighter. its just over half a surge value and I can almost always get healing from the cleric

6:41 PM
@waxeagle Oh the party Cleric.. I mean Templar now... I prefer Warlord for a Leader role, but dang, you cannot go wrong with a Cleric

@GPierce no you can't ours is a beam templar. I loved my warlord, but I gave him up when we got enough players that I didn't have to play 2 characters anymore

@GPierce Templar?!

@waxeagle I have a love affair with both the Bard and the Warlord, I'll admit it. Though, I've found my preference for roles is Controller followed by Leader
@DForck42 New name for the old PHB1 Cleric
@DForck42 Because the Essentials-line Warpriest is technically a Cleric, too, and this way the Templar and Warpriest both fall under the Cleric umbrella. Nothing mechanical has really changed, just the name.

@DForck42 Instead of releasing a new book called "Class Compendium" they are releasing updates to all of the PHB1 classes in Dragon magazine. in addition they have renamed them in order to distinguish them more easily from the new Essentials classes
Fighter -> Weaponmaster (Essentials Slayer and knight)

@waxeagle ahh, ok. didn't know about that

6:44 PM
Rogue -> Scoundrel (Essentials Thief)
etc

@DForck42 Also the classes are completely updated with the existing Eratta, so it's actually pretty nice.
@DForck42 You can find them on the D&D website for free in a pdf

@GPierce all in one document that is open to the public

ok. sadly i no longer have an acquantances/frieds that are really interested in playing dnd

@DForck42 that is sad, how much 4e experience do you have?

@waxeagle Arcanist is out this month.. Is that the last of it?

6:46 PM
@GPierce has paladin come out yet?

@waxeagle I wasn't sure if it was getting the treatment

@waxeagle played jsut about every weekend for 1- 1 1/2 years.

I thought it was the "Big 4," aka Rogue, Fighter, Wizard, and Cleric
Though.. they did come out with the "Class Compendium Warlock Playtest"

@GPierce ok, I thought they were doing all of PHB1

@waxeagle Hmm, they may be. For some reason I thought the Arcanist was the last of it. I'll check with my Google-Fu

6:48 PM
I'm not sure and I can't go look because #$%^ network filter
@GPierce good deal, if you look at the Marshall entry it should tell you the intent, if not go back one more mag

@waxeagle Good call
@waxeagle Forgot about the MArshall
I am excited to see the Essentials-ised version in Heroes of the Feywild

@GPierce me too. Hopefully they do a good job, nothing crippled like the warpriest or completely ridiculous like the charger theif...

@waxeagle Ah, see I actually liked the Sun Domain Warpriest

@GPierce I played with one, the guy playing it hated it.

But yes, Charger Thief? Ridiculous
The one essentials class I could care less about is the Sentinel

6:51 PM
@GPierce lol part of that was the fact that its a bugbear using a large rapier. Normally it would be a slightly more respectable 2d8 intead of 2d10 :)

But again, I hate Druid fluff (for no good discernable reason..)

@GPierce is that the other leader class or defender class/

@waxeagle lemmecheck

I thought Essentials was way thin on defenders right now

@waxeagle Leader

6:53 PM
@GPierce k. the other defender is the paladin I think (not the blackguard though)

I think my favorite thing to come out of the Essentials line is the Mage (real schools of magic, awesome) and the Hunter
I do like the Blackguard though...

@GPierce what's mage?

@GPierce the mage is freaking sweet. The schools aspect is very very nice.

What's a mage

@DForck42 it is the D&D essentials wizard

6:54 PM
@DForck42 The Essentials line version of the Wizard
@DForck42 Essentials is a more classic-based version on the main, core classes

@GPierce is there an easy way to describe what they changed?

@DForck42 It slightly restored the Vancian magic of the previous editions and reintroduced true schools of magic to 4e

@GPierce i dunno what that means, i only played 3.5 once

@DForck42 also lets you prepare your encounters in addition to your dailies.
@DForck42 and makse MM a class feature :)

@waxeagle Memorizing and choosing spells = Vancian Magic

6:57 PM
@GPierce good to know, was unfamiliar with the term

I quite prefer the 4e take on Vancian actually. It discourages the typical 3.X Vancian of going Nova or having a 15 minute workday and then resting

@waxeagle @GPierce - wargaming is welcome on B&CG, not a lot of traffic there yet, but we have some.

Granted, the 4e scope/range is nowhere near as broad as the 3.X range. You are more pigeon-holed for better and for worse
@PatLudwig Good to know. Thanks Pat!

@GPierce fair enough, although they did make it so wizards don't retrain, not sure if that helps any or not

@GPierce anytime, sorry for the slow response...work and all that :)

6:59 PM
@PatLudwig so questions about the dnd board game are welcomed?

@DForck42 You mean Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of the Ashardon?

@DForck42 We have several for Castle Ravenloft

@GPierce yes

@PatLudwig Also good to know!

7:01 PM
looks like we have one for Wrath of Ashlardon, so we need a second to make the tag stick :)

@PatLudwig Thanks, happy to hear it

Pat is the man. I will have to take a greater look at B&CG now

anytime, is there a generic name those two are known by? Seems like expertise in one would cover both

@PatLudwig dnd-boardgames ?
that way you can tag general and specific and if the specific goes mia you have the general? Kind of like we are sort of doing with indie games here

@waxeagle makes sense

7:04 PM
Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Systems Boardgames
woot, I think that is more than 25 characters :)

@PatLudwig lol seriously

@PatLudwig wowza, that's a moutful

@PatLudwig nice

@PatLudwig dnd-asb?
then put the full title in the tag wiki desc?

@PatLudwig you could just go the simple dnd tag route

7:05 PM
I'm thinking dnd-adventure-systems

@PatLudwig that could work, as long as it doesnt' invite actual D&D questions you should be fine

if it does we'll send 'em over here. We owe RPG a couple questions anyways :)

@waxeagle Yeah, that was my only concern with just a "dnd" tag

b&cg doesn't have any empire builder questions?!

@PatLudwig :) sounds like a plan, we haven't seen a migration in ages...
(at least to my knowledge)

7:07 PM
@DForck42 Older games in general are pretty hit and miss
well, mostly miss if I'm honest

@PatLudwig do you just not get any or do they not get answered?

@PatLudwig but... it's an an awesome game! if i could think of any questions off the top of my had i'd throw one on there

We have decent coverage since the german games explosion, but anything started before that needs to be hugely popular (like Axis&Allies) to attract many questions
@waxeagle Our answer rate is very good, getting the questions is the hard part
a lot of the older games have really decent FAQ's already, so there isn't a huge need I guess

@PatLudwig good to know. If I have a question I will stop in. Haven't been playing many baord games lately.

@waxeagle I look forward to it!

7:10 PM
I have a ton of questions over Arkham Horror and Shadows Over Camelot. I will definitely be stopping by

@PatLudwig is the old star wars ccg on topic there? (I guess are CCG and TCG games on topic in general?)

@waxeagle yes and yes. I can't think of any questions about it currently, but TCG's are all on topic
@GPierce Arkham horror is one of my favorites, I'll be looking for those!

@waxeagle What's the difference between CCG and TCG? I know what they each stand for.. but are they not the same thing? You trade in CCGs and collect in TCGs... Are they not interchangable

@GPierce branding!
@PatLudwig cool. If I ever get back around to digging out my old cards I may have a question or two

@PatLudwig I played it once and had a blast. I got it last xmas and have yet to crack it open to run my own. The tome that is the rule book is both awesome and overwhelming

7:14 PM
@GPierce I have all the expansions, and its become a bit much to play. I need to sit down and devise a better system to get the game up and running quicker. In some ways I miss only having the main set or a couple expansions!

@GPierce I have been eyeing it for a while, but I haven't bought it yet..

@GPierce That might make a decent question for B&CG. I don't know what, if any, is the difference myself

@PatLudwig yeah, most board games get that way ...
btw ... why aren't you in your room ;-)

@PatLudwig like i said Branding!

@PatLudwig We played with 2 of the expansions and it was a little beyond my range at the time (first time playing it and having never read the rules) But it was still a blast. I'm hoping just the main game will go smoother

7:16 PM
@CRoss Y'all were talking about board games here and pinging me!
@waxeagle You could be right!

@CRoss It's true... we are

@GPierce The main game is significantly easier. The expansions add difficulty. It's better to play the main game at least a couple times to figure out how things go.
sometimes you still lose though. The Great Old Ones can be devious

@PatLudwig I noticed one of the Elder Gods had a special line on it that if it successfully was summoned you automatically lost. Which is awesome.
I'm a fool for the Lovecraftian mythos (actually, any of the Weird tales from the pulp age, really)

@GPierce lol, yes. Although he is one of the easier ones to win the game with as he takes forever to show up

@PatLudwig Is it Shoggoth? I cannot recall. We played with Cthulhu because it was my first game and it seemed fitting.

7:20 PM
The first edition of the game had no concept of fighting the GOO's, they were all like that (if they appear, you lose).

@PatLudwig hmmm mean but more fitting to the mythos

@GPierce Azathoth...sorry, Google docs was running slow. My memory needed refreshing

7:34 PM
Dogs... going crazy... cat smells drive them insane...

@GPierce too much fun :)

@waxeagle I guess... I put the kitten up in the guest bath and let them out of the master bedroom and they attacked me with their noses and are now sniffing under the guest bath door
Barking every time the kitten meows

@GPierce lol what kind of dogs are they?

@GPierce Two words for you: Calm Assertive

@waxeagle Heeler and a Boxer/Aussie Shep puppy
@CRoss This and rawhides seem to be doing the trick

7:38 PM
@GPierce never met a heeler, but the boxers and and the aussie shep ive known have been a bit wild
@GPierce the google images of heelers make me think high energy dog too...

@waxeagle I've seen calm boxers, but every Aussie Shepard I've seen has energy that overfloweth

@waxeagle Well, heelers are herding/working dogs. They were bred with Dingos to make them more aggressive, actually. They make great guard/security dogs and are loyal to a tee. Somewhat high energy, but my 4 year old is just fine as long as we take him to the park once a week.

@GPierce fair enough. Herding dogs are fun...just not around cars...

@CRoss Aussie Sheps are also herding/working dogs, so again potentially high energy. But the boxer mellows her out a little, I think. Then again, she is a puppy and puppy = high energy

@GPierce true, my ranger friend

7:41 PM
@GPierce seriously.

@waxeagle Ha, the mutt is more prone to chase cars than he is. He's actually fairly docile unless he is at the park and then he tries to herd other dogs. It's hilarious.
@CRoss Ranger? If we are talking D&D classes I will take it, my Dwarven friend. (your words, not mine :) )

@GPierce that sounds like a trip. We had some kind of herding breed that hung around the college I worked at/went to, he constantly tried to herd cars, he ended up with a bum leg for a while...

@waxeagle That's sad about the bum leg. My heeler is easily the best dog I've ever had. Smartest too. The mutt.. well that's a different story. Mutts are very polarizing, very smart or very dumb. She's dumb. Sweet as sin, but dumb.

@GPierce well, I certainly didn't think you were a U.S. Army Ranger

@CRoss Pew pew?

7:44 PM
ahhh time to go. See you guys later.

@waxeagle later

@waxeagle Have a good one! Good luck with your game tonight!

@GPierce thanks, will let you guys know how it goes

we'll expect a report tomorrow of course :-)

@CRoss of course

7:49 PM
Alright gents, I'm off of here, too. I've got to play house-husband for a bit and try to convince the lady to go running this evening so I can run and "spend time with her"... Women...

3 hours later…
11:15 PM
1d6

okay... so that's a 3
1d4
(wow, this works so much better just shuffling paper..)
1d6

high... is a 2
huh, that ... worked.

I see a 6 and a 4, respectively
1d20

11:26 PM
1

@DiceService Oh... ouch... That doesn't bode well
1d4
6d6

@BrianBallsunStanton Huh, pretty cool

@GPierce yes, modding them into a d3 and d2.
for da wave

@BrianBallsunStanton I see that now
I be slow!

11:39 PM
no worries. Also, let's choose 2 themes, so that the final player has a choice

@BrianBallsunStanton Yeah, I agree that'd be best. And there are a few ones I'm curious about in action. (Animal Master and Wizard's Apprentice for example)
I wish my internet would be more reliable tonight.. I hate my ISP

exactly. Now's the time to inflict, er, experiment with those options
also yeah, I really want to see animal master

@BrianBallsunStanton Being able to set up CA with your pet 1/enc? That sounds quite nice

@GPierce bah, forget that... you have a scout

Also, perfect for a Thief character

11:45 PM
and yeah, trained monkey, anyone?

@BrianBallsunStanton At later levels when you can see through its eyes and control it?

Dwarven organ grinder with minkey.

Yes, also nice

naah, level 1 is still useful

@BrianBallsunStanton That's the second theme I was going to select for the Dwarf, actually

11:45 PM
can be used to do presence/absence of enemies
cool :)
oh dear, if it actually is a Minkey... that means that we have inspector Clouseau in the game.

I think the Guttersnipe theme is ripe for a stealthy sneaky campaign

... oh gods, can we have one of the villians be Inspector Clouseau ?

Hahaha, maybe
Or at least an allusion to him

completely oblivious inspector that... is...
remarkably lucky.
so he just shows up wrong place/wrong time and suddenly we have to deal with him.

@BrianBallsunStanton Maybe not a villain but an NPC? Perfect!

11:47 PM
not in fight.
Antagonistic skill challenge NPC?

Reoccurring annoying NPC

hehehehhehehe
+1 :)

Sigh, I need to reset my router... for the 5th time today. Netflix just cut out on me. I'm getting off of here, I'll talk to you later buddy, good luck packing!
