5:00 PM
is it f9 all the time?

@tintincute yes the blue thing :)
@tintincute no sometimes it's f2 sometimes it's del it could also be a combination watch the screen as it boots it will tell you hit X to go into setup

@Kyle: Do I have to press f9 right? I can't remember how to get to this blue thing?
ah ok

where X is the key

yeah sometimes it is very fast.
alright after I set up the bios. what do I do next?

after you set the boot priority just reboot and it should boot from the usb stick

5:02 PM
ok and from there I should follow the instructions I supposed

yes

hmmm that means I can't connect to the internet then...

not while you are booting from the usb

oops I am quite fearful of what might happen. Because then I dont know what to do?

then just exit reset your boot order and come back here if you get hung up

5:04 PM
hmm this is a challenge. I have to back up everything then.

wil should be back soon but I'm leaving to go to lunch

ok no problem.

@tintincute I wouldn't worry about the back up

wait,

only if you want to reinstall windows, however it never hurts to do a backup

5:04 PM
when you say reset your boot order what does it mean?
ok

put the hard drive at the top of the list
I'll be back in an hour if you need more help

huh?
ok then... no problem enjoy your lunch

Wil
busybusybusy.... is it sorted?... I am just reading the chat log...
@tintincute ok as @Kyle said, wiping and reinstalling is the ONLY way to guarantee no keylogger remains. As for wiping the keylogger, not saying it is impossible, but without admin access, it is not possible to guarantee it. (depends how smart the person was who loaded it).
but also, you really need control over the administrator account, there is no guarantees there is nothing else - remote access programs etc.

@Wil: thanks so much I have to go home then because I have to try this, I'm still at work. I left my laptop at home.

If you don't have admin access to the computer
You can use Password Recovery to hack into the registry and clear the admin password
Then you will have admin access so that you can do what you need.

Wil
5:19 PM
@David ^^ read up, already been talking about that! :)

sorry...
Just got on...

Wil
great minds think alike! ... unless you know a program that can run from within Windows/under the account?... (not personally seen one)

Yes I guess I have to do first what you advised and then if something happen I have to get back here.

never seen one that can do that @Wil

@Wil

Wil
5:21 PM
@tintincute I am working most hours trying to get a project done and. really busy, but I leave chat open... feel free to @ notify me and I will hear/see and jump on if I am here... but others will be happy to help as well

@Wil: that is nice of you.
What time is it there?
I might be home by 11PM
then I can set again in front of my laptop and work this on.
I think the person who installed the keylogger is quite good, because he was able to get copies of mails from my yahoo account which was kind of a secret and nobody knows except myself

Wil
@tintincute 5:21PM at the moment, but, I have only had 4 hours of sleep @ about 12:00AM, so I may drop off at any time!

@Wil: I see its 18:26 here.
So I am ahead 1 hr.
@Wil: by the way I will boot this through USB.
Do I have to have an empty USB stick?
all my USB's are full. So I think I can reformat one and save that USB image file

Wil
@tintincute Yes, it would need to be formatted for *nix, you can still use it in *nix machines, but it would be best if you just get the smallest one you can find. You can always format it back to fat for Windows later

mornin all

5:25 PM
@Wil: wait wait, so I have to reformat my USB stick to *nix?

Hello @KronoS

hey @David how ya been?

updated my network card drivers - hopefully that'll end my wifi misery

Wil
@tintincute ...the utility in the download will do it all automatically for you

@Sathya I'm working on a blog post on that right now... update me and let me know if there's anything new to add to it

5:29 PM
I have been good @KronoS, you?

@David extremely busy... but good

Wil
@tintincute it will ask what drive you want to write to, and it will do all the hard work, but it will format and remove all your files from it... you will need to format it back to Windows after. In some ways, cd is just straight forward, only use it if you have a spare/old stick

@KronoS v14 of Intel's WiFi drivers integrate the create a wifi hotspot feature - similar to connectify

@Wil: ok thanks
I don't have CD at the moment only USB sticks
So I will reformat it then...
delete all the unnecessary files...

Wil
5:44 PM
@tintincute no need to format if you have a copy, the tool will do it for you... you may just want to see if your local shop sells disk - if you have a budget one or something... you only need a single cd (<20p in bulk) or the cheapest old stock 32MB USB stick - (1GB is less than £4 now usually!)

@Sathya so v14 of intel's drivers may cause the same issue?

nopes. that issue was because of hp's flashy good for nothing crap.

that's what I thought... just making sure

it's a little early to say whether the latest drivers have fixed my problem completely ( I've never discussed about this) - few days should be enough to conclude

@Wil: I have 4 G USB and I have files on this. I will delete them all, then shall I format it?

Wil
5:56 PM
@tintincute There shouldn't be a need to format as the tool will do it for you, just make sure you back up first
but personally, just be careful, sometimes when you repartition/format a usb stick, you loose a few mb, it is why I would recommend using an old/promotion-free or similar... but it will work just the same

ok what do you mean back up`? my USB?

Wil
I mean take a backup of your important files - you do not need to format after, the tool will.
you only need to format back to ntfs/fat so windows can use it after you have finished using the tool... sorry if I am being confusing

thanks ok I will go now and will update you. Thanks @Wil you've been very helpful I really appreciate it.
Have a great day :-)

Wil
6:12 PM
@tintincute If I don't fall asleep! thanks!

@TomWij wowwwwwwwww
my brain hurts

@TomWij But Cobb and Saito never wake up! HAX

I don't understand the end of the output, might be a copy paste error from the guy that executed it.
@Shinrai [Yusuf] going to take the kick back to reality and wake up all the others

But but you can't get kicked out of limbo

7:58 PM
I think I remember a while ago there was a free screen capture utility that could do scrolling windows... Does anyone know what it is?
So fed up - insurance prices STILL... just finally went to buy, quote guaranteed until next month - payment failed, rang them up... quote went up by £120.... saying I didn't fill out something correctly... I have it all on the system cached luckily and want to take screenshots to prove it... so annoyed with them.

the new Techsmith freemium program perhaps? techsmith.com/jing

wow my flag weight level is already at 400... i need to stop flagging/editing and start answering some more...

@IvoFlipse That doesn't look like it... looks like it has adverts on the pictures you take :S

8:06 PM
did DV just kill that guys wife through the phone?

@IvoFlipse yep that's right

8:26 PM

Hi everyone

hi @BloodPhilia

What's up :D
Does anyone know about python here?

depends on what you're trying to do
and I suggest we move to Fake Programmers for it

Wil
@IvoFlipse Thanks for your help - it was Farstone Capture - just downloaded trial and I like it... unless I find a free similar utility, I think I will buy it... more powerful/flexible than Windows Capture tool and much faster... and... if you haven't notcied in my answers, freehand circles suck!

8:31 PM
I'll keep it in mind

Wil
@KronoS Ever seen Remi Kart?...

no I haven't.. and that was awesome

hey all

hey @DMA57361

I didn't think it interesting enough until you linked it as well
but holy shit, that did look amazing :)

Wil
9:25 PM
@KronoS If that isn't fake, it is amazing!

Hi! :)

well i asked here:
0
Q: Is this really possible? If so, how?

KronoSI just saw this "trick" where a cup of water is turned over onto a table without spilling (using a piece of cardboard. After removing the cardboard from underneath the cup, the person then removes the cup in a particular way (lifts straight up and twists) and lo and behold, the water stays in it...

either I'll get a really good answer or it'll be closed... as "you're dumb"

9:45 PM
hi folks
how's it going?
finally I get a breather - got my last major test for a while done yesterday

wow...this qualifies for close as "Who in their right mind would ever do this" haha

Q: Power supply burned out, easy to install a new one?

martyOk so I left my desktop pc alone, unplugged, for a couple months, and when I came back and plugged it back in, it started emitting a high pitched squealing noise, and when I pushed the power button, it wouldn't turn on. So I opened it up, plugged it in, and tried to find the source of the squeal...

"my plan was to get an identical power supply circuit board, and one by one take out the wires that were soldered to the old power supply and put them on the new on in the same spot (I know how to solder)"

@TomWij these guys used deionized water... does that have anything to do with it?

and @KronoS That is patently ridiculous

:(
is starting to feel even more and more like an idiot

nah don't feel like an idiot

9:50 PM
oh hey @nhinkle! head over to SU blog chat room when you get the chance... I need your consent :)

You did the correct thing which is to say "Hey, is this actually possible" and do your research
unlike 95% of the world's population who just blindly accepts anything they hear

wow @Shinrai, that's a.... fascinating post
i do hope he uploads pics
@KronoS there's some weird stuff that happens, but that looks fake
i'll take a look at the blog stuff shortly

no rush... just gonna post when you give me the ok

@nhinkle nah, look at his last comment in the thread under Joel's answer
Basically "OH GEEZ I AM A MORON DERP THANKS"

watching the video
so just a sec
hm. that's weird. i thought he was using something other than water, like glycerin, but then he touched it and it fell into water. so not sure what he used. i'm thinking it's probably some sort of illusion though

9:54 PM
@Shinrai well I did sit there and think about it, and decided to let the physics experts decide
@nhinkle the only thing that I can think of is video special effects... but not sure

@KronoS it was probably something like that, yes

I suspect it's just special effects, yeah

Wil
@KronoS nice!

@KronoS Updated my answer, also, took my last sentence from your link... :-)

@TomWij ya just read... the more and more I think about it... you're right...
thanks for answering in a relevant way
WHOA Physics.stackexchange.com just changed their look!

10:08 PM
anybody got any thoughts on this? superuser.com/questions/247998/…
apparently the answer was deleted, then undleted by the poster

@KronoS: Yeah, I thought the CSS was freaking out on me. :D

that is all very od @tombull89

Posting an answer gives a wrong white glow though, gonna report it at their meta...

@TomWij what? o_O
white glow? meat?

Adjusted... ^^

10:13 PM
ohhh
lol I was completely baffled

huh, weird

I'm winning! :P
Note to audience: We're encouraging each other this way to get to 10k first.

@nhinkle I'm doing pretty good

@TomWij i've noticed.... augh!! i must work harder to catch up! :D
@KronoS, good to hear :)
@TomWij i haven't had much time for answering lately. i'm going to try to get some up today though

10:17 PM
@tombull89 what's the problem?

there we go

One day in the far future, I'll be racing to get past @Wil's score... :D

now they're actual user profile images

Unless I don't need to race for reputation anymore, in which case I would be spending the reputation.

Q: What type of fire extinguisher is recommended in the server room?

DariusMy company is on a shopping spree and is asking if I want to place a fire extinguisher in the server room. On that note, what type of fire extinguisher is recommended in the server room?

Hmm: Off-Topic? ServerFault? ...?

@TomWij defininitely not on-topic at SF
I'd say not on-topic anywhere... interesting question though.

night :)

@KronoS: Actually, it is. Looked on Google for an answer, ended up on SF:

Q: What's the best fire suppression for a server room?

Dennis WilliamsonWhat is the state of the art in fire suppression for server rooms? What are the top priorities in choosing a good system?

Which brings us to the cross-site duplicate again, close as off-topic, right?

right...

Wil
@TomWij Not hard! :( I have so much work on, I have hardly answered any questions this week... or for a while, I just have odd days free when I can do a load! It seems when ever I check recently, there are no unanswered Windows ones... (I only post a similar answer if I think it will be a lot better, or if I am already 3/4's the way through when I see it... personal rules!)

Q: Add an option to Vote to Close as "Off-Topic" AND a "Duplicate" of another SE site.

KronoSWith the growth of the Stack Exchange 2.0 site, there are multiple users that are actively participating in multiple sites. With this in mind, I would like to suggest an option for "Vote to Close" to be able to facilitate a "Vote to Close as a Duplicate of ANOTHER SE site". For example: Found ...

@Wil Still... You have quite a lot of reputation. Will take me some years to got there... :D

Wil
@TomWij Added a comment... I can't help myself.
@TomWij nah, just answer more... nearly all my rep recently is from older questions...

Yeah
Or I should ask a lot of questions to fill the site.
That's an example of how I got a lot of reputation by questions...

Wil
wow

Perhaps I should ask for another user ID there and on Super User on 1 April, because it causes nightmares... :D

11:00 PM
Hi again
@Wil: I'm home now and will back some files before doing the instructions earlier
btw, I checked in my User Account I have this: myname Computer Administrator & Guest

@KronoS if a reply is deleted, can the original poster undelete? Look at the edit history. And is this sort of answer OK?

But if I go to the User Groups under Computer Management I have 5 User Account; Administrator (Built in account for administering the computer management); Guest, Help Assistant; SUPPORT_388945a0; myname

@tombull89 can you paste a link again?

so now sure if my win xp has an administrator user
@KronoS: what do you mean?

sorry @tintincute too many t's in here ;P

11:08 PM
@KronoS: huh? sorry I don't understand what do you mean=

I "@" you accidently

Wil
11:28 PM
@tintincute there are some hidden ones as part of the system which only get used for special tasks
don't worry about support/help... user accounts panel only shows the ones that allow you to logon (unless manually disabled/hidden, but again, those two are ok).

@Wi: that means I'm actually the administrator of this laptop
so there is no existing administrator? it's only myname

Wil
@tintincute double click on your name and go to groups, take a look and see if you are a member of administrators - but the fact you can go that far probably means you are the administrator
I would still change the password of the existing administrator account, and if you are worried about malware/keyloggers, take a look at autoruns... there was a tool that let you see any program intercepting keyboard/but I can't remember... @tomwij - any ideas? You seem to remember the name of every Windows tool!?

@Wil: I double click my name in the computer management and go to Local Users and Groups and then Users. Member of: Administrator, Debugger Users and Users

Wil
ok, you are an administrator!

Ok what about the other name "Administrator" listed first under Local Users and Groups
Can I use this as logon? But I am not sure what is the login name
@Wil: do i still need to boot this with the USB stick like the one you mentioned earlier? I just need to know if my laptop has some keylogger?
Or where can I see the event what has been done on my laptop, as far as I know it's possible but I don't know where is this located? thanks

Wil
11:45 PM
@tintincute no - that was to reset the administrator account

ok so I don't need to use this anymore?
Now I think I can just simply check if it has some keylogger installed?

Wil
@tintincute there is no really good fool proof way... one way I use is to use process monitor/file monitor (the other link I gave you) so that you can see if anything is accessing your hard drive... it is very hard, but basically you start typing and see if anything is logging/saving the keystrokes... there is no easy way to see if you have a keylogger

ok. now with the process monitor how will I know if anything is accessing my hard drive
what should I look to?
