@Burgi Fixed!

i was about to log an issue

@Burgi Go ahead and do it! This is literally how I'm learning git

@Burgi These XKCDs are gold. The new ones aren't any fun :/

@Rahul2001 I dont know ... todays xkcd is pretty good

@CaffeineAddiction Hm, the new ones are smart and stuff, but nothing compared to the classics

5:48 PM
I'm setting up a new WLAN at home. I named the SSID "offline". What a great way to fuck with your future self

@OliverSalzburg lol

> A daily papyrus newspaper, the Acta Diurna (Daily Events), was distributed in locations in Rome and around the Baths. Its motto was “Publicize And Propagate."
@Rahul2001 You are too young to be told the answer to that :)

6:07 PM
Tomorrow night, I will have the honor to photograph the CUNYAC Basketball Championship Finals (both men and women!) for my alma mater, College of Staten Island. This does mean I won't be around for much of the day tomorrow, primarily 5:30 pm to 11 pm EST (22:30 to 4:00 UTC), though I might be able to check in briefly during halftime or between games.
(this might be worth starring)

Wake-On-Lan not working is the most annoying thing because I have to get up out of my chair to turn my other PC back on every time I test it.

i first assumed you linked to the corresponding wikipedia articles (men / women) :D

@bwDraco Congrats; go get 'em!

Thanks 😃

6:14 PM
@bwDraco I freed up enough space on my SSD to make 45.5 GB of free space, 5% reserved space not included. I then checked and defragged my partition in a live session, bootet the normal system up, filled the freed space with data until only 100-something MB where left free, trimmed, and it took 36 seconds
@bwDraco I then deleted all the newly created files and trimmed again. This time, it only took 29 second
@bwDraco shouldn't the first trime have terminated pretty much instantly and the second one have taken 45.5 GB / write speed without having any pre-freed blocks?

You should be problem free at this point.

Does anyone here know what the "WOL & Shutdown Link Speed" setting is under the Reaktek Controller settings?
Does that matter?

@Rahul2001 I forked your repo and filled in my details :)

@allquixotic XD

6:19 PM
This kind of photography is not something everybody gets a chance to do. I will most likely have baseline access, meaning I'll be on the court itself, shooting from behind the hoop. It's an honor to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
I'll be given the appropriate credentials from my employer.

@bwDraco funny thing is, if you do well, you will have more opportunities like it, instead of once in your lifetime
@Insane I think that's a power saving optimization where the ethernet controller can negotiate down to a lower speed when you're powered off or in Wake-on-LAN conditions (standby or hibernate too)

@allquixotic The big question is how long I'll still be with my college doing sports photography. I expect to move on by the end of the year. They love my work, though.

@bwDraco them liking your work is something to be proud of; also, money... now, even if you don't intend to become a permanent full-career photographer (which might not be financially viable), still enjoy the experience and have fun with the social and professional development aspects of being able to do something productive that you enjoy

Yup 😃

assuming you want to end up back in salaried corporate America, that's a very good stepping stone

6:24 PM
I've told them that until I have a full-time job elsewhere, I'm not putting in a resignation letter.
It's all about the experience.

@Rahul2001 I should mention I had a few PCs before that one that were technically "mine", and PCs even earlier than that that were shared among the entire family, but just didn't list them because I can't remember what their specs were, but the upgrade cycles were quite a bit longer then
though those items 1 and 2 were the only ones of that particular gender because before then I was more or less too young

Goodnight folks! Mum is taking phone away for now

in my list, the Broadwell MBP has a unique processor, the Core i5-idek @Bob @JourneymanGeek :P github.com/allquixotic/casanova/blob/quix/README.md

@bwDraco remember to go talk to people
get candid shots of the crowd during the breaks, people might pay you for them
also asking the pretty girls/boys/dragons if you can take their picture for the event is a great conversation opener
probably

...just bought AoTS: Escalation on Steam sale. (cc @allquixotic, @Bob, @JourneymanGeek)

This laptop will not run this game well.
...we'll see.

7:17 PM
Downloading right now.
Hardware: Core i7-4800MQ (4C/8T Haswell @ 2.7-3.7 GHz); GeForce GTX 780M (Kepler GK104 with 1536 CUDA cores in 8 SMXs) overclocked to 861-887 MHz core, 4GB GDDR5 overclocked to 5400 MHz effective.
...and I've run into some trouble running the game in DX12 mode. I'll have to change some settings...
For whatever reason, the NVIDIA graphics drivers are defaulting to the IGP, causing it to fail (this was hinted to in the error message the game generated). Trying again in a moment...
...and the game launches.

7:33 PM
So I have 3 screens on this Windows machine. On every screen, there's a maximized Chrome window. When the right window gains focus and the previously focused window was not a Chrome window, the left Chrome window will become restored. This can be reproduced at will. The same happens when changing focus from the right window to another Chrome window
I am open for wild suggestions

@bwDraco sweet; we should play this weekend :D
@bwDraco 780M should be at least sufficient to run it well on low-medium detail

1080p high preset, GPU-focused: Not good. I'm seeing GPU throttling and frame rates are very inconsistent at best, unplayable at worst.

@OliverSalzburg get a borderless multi-monitor setup a single, huge, ultrawide 3440x1440 or higher main display and use Windows' built-in window placement feature to put two Chromes side by side? that's what I do :P
@bwDraco toss all your detail settings down to Low and try it - should be okay

@allquixotic Sounds good, but that seems to involve a bit more money and effort than what I had in mind

I likely won't touch the game again until I build that new desktop. Sorry.
CPU-focused benchmark in progress...

7:37 PM
@OliverSalzburg it almost sounds like some driver or plugin or shell extension is causing that to go wonky, because unless it's specific to having three windows, I can never repro that on my single ultrawide monitor setup
or it's related to the windows being maximized, specifically, and it's fine if the windows aren't maximized to take up one whole monitor

@allquixotic I think it's specific to the state. The window actually "pops" into the restored state
But let me check

lol, there's an achievement for running the benchmark

@OliverSalzburg if you have a good amount of RAM and a Windows <the Windows ver you're using> ISO sitting around (or DVD), fire up a VM (VBox or VMware) with that Windows, don't bother activating, install Chrome <ver you have>, and use 3 virtual monitors in multi-monitor mode and try to repro it

In its restored state, the window actually takes up more space than it would when maximized

GPU still throttling during CPU-focused benchmark.

7:39 PM
if no repro on vanilla Windows, it's some extension you have possibly
@bwDraco turn your detail down; even on Bob and I's GTX 1080 FEs, we hit serious GPU bottlenecking during normal play on maxed out settings (though, neither one of us is at 1080p... 3440x1440 for me and 4K for him)

It's clear, however, that 4C/8T at these clocks is not enough.

for a 780M at 1080p I'd say medium would be as far as I'd want to go

Hmm. I figured it would something more simple. Like number of taskbars and placement. But I couldn't find any relevant connections there :P

I might give the multiplayer a go in a few weeks' to a couple of months' time, depending on when that PC is built.

@OliverSalzburg also try the excellent program DisplayFusion; get it in trial mode and see if it fixes it... it adds a shit-ton of window management code on top of the base Explorer shell, but in my experience it does a much better job of window management (with some added conveniences) than even Windows 10 b1607

7:41 PM
I'd like to do at least a bit of the single-player campaign first, though.

you can disable features you don't want, like the changes it makes to the title bar of every window by default to add a displayfusion menu

@allquixotic Neat. I'll check it out

I have very little experience with RTS games so might play rather poorly.

(And yes, DisplayFusion explicitly supports Windows 10)

...rather, the achievement is unlocked due to the way the benchmark works :P
Raw test results:
Results indicate game is mainly GPU-bound
Let me parse the raw data on the GPU benchmark...
...that's a lot of frame time variance. Not good.
Trying again with the medium preset (this might take a while)
The game still renders awfully choppy.

8:08 PM
@bwDraco :/ try Low just for curiosity's sake and to see if your FPS improves much?

...this is on the Standard preset. Looks a bit better, but still not great.
The problem is that the frame time spikes are still there.
Visibly better at Low but a bit of choppiness remains.
One minute to go.
Some parts are still choppy.
I guess it's time to upgrade.

@bwDraco whatever they're doing in frames 500-1000 is pretty ridiculous, apparently

It's playable but the machine is barely limping by.

I'll try it at home on my big rig; I'd be surprised if it hits 50 FPS on frames 500-1000 though
probably lucky to get 40 there

@allquixotic Lower is better.

8:20 PM
(less perceptible thanks for G-Sync)

This is a frame time chart.

OH... nvm
frame time, not fps. lolllll
the numbers made sense for FPS so I was like oh ok
20ms frame time = about 50 fps yea? 5 frames / 100 msec; multiply
so your dead zone is frames 2500-3000 :P

This is not hugely better. Notice the wide band around 2600-3150?
Also, frame time spikes.

much better consistency there

Still almost entirely GPU-bound, but the frame time spikes are not great.
The wide band is an indication that the frame time is jumping up and down.
I'm wondering if you'd have any use for the raw data...
I might not bother posting it on Gist this time.
It seems to be more consistent overall on Low, but it's still rather jittery at times.
The periodic frame time spikes are a bad sign.
...blah. Here's the raw data:
Ah well. Game's playable on Low, but marginally so due to inconsistent frame times.
The numbers do not lie. There's the occasional stutter, and the raw frame data prove it.

8:34 PM
@Rahul2001 sudden anime drop forms
You probably should make it a private repo. Specially if she's got a github account...

I bought it mainly as a benchmark because a lot of people use it as such. Perhaps I'll get to actually play it soon enough.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I know for a fact that mine don't (especially my computers) so I'm fine with mine
(I forked his repo)

@allquixotic Due to the sensitive nature of such repos, I guess it should be forked only by the owners mantainers themselves. ;P

@allquixotic, your thoughts on these benchmark results?

> Fate: Shipped to NZ.

8:43 PM
@bwDraco pretty good for a 780M, about what I expected

brilliant

@Rahul2001 as you're not old enough to think about it yet, the internet never forgets
concider what you post where

I'm still rather concerned about the inconsistent frame times...

as in not old enough to have something from 15 years ago seriously bite you in the ass I mean
not that you're not old enough to concider it.

@djsmiley2k I am, and not having had any contact with either of #1 or #2 for something approaching 15 years, I'm not worried

8:44 PM
and if you're thinking 'wtf, I got this, i was brought up on the internet'
@allquixotic that girl you forgot to put on the list? maybe she did something stupid when she read it
the press? they found the list, and now they are publishing it for the world to see, because your now famous and all..

@djsmiley2k unlikely; the reality is that probably nobody gives a shit

politicans and business people can't get their heads around it yet...
@allquixotic lol yes, but you never knwo

@djsmiley2k all he needs to worry about is if she finds the repo, forks it and her dates don't match his....

that is also fun

I didn't even really try with the dates, but I have exact dates for my Amazon purchases (of computers, not women)

8:47 PM
and also I don't mean the list as a problem
I mean the idea of posting personal info...

codename "regret" sounds nice...

@Burgi I think his most current issue right now is if @Rahul2001's gf find it and either gets jealous or doesn't like being itemized in a list, or both.

@Burgi a friend asked me jokingly one time, "huhuh, if you could tell your 17 year old self some advice and had only 4 words, what would you say?" and I answered, "don't let her go"

@ThatBrazilianGuy ah i see what you mean

dear lord
just saw an advert for 1 2 switch

8:48 PM
he wasn't expecting my answer to be so dark

and my wife is like 'wtf was that?'

@allquixotic you, could move to NZ with her...

I'll update the graphics driver and try again.

@Burgi too late, she found another guy last I heard many years ago

dang :(

8:49 PM
I dunno
letting em go worked for me

you can talk about "maybe give her a call and see if she is single now" but I don't believe in this type of thing happening in reality; makes a great song though

she's not with @Rahul2001 is she?

Actually 17? k - 'don't screw this up, you're not going to, but don't' XD

@Burgi she'd be in her 30s right now, which I doubt Rahul in India would date in his teens, as she wouldn't be going to college in India at 30

it was a bad joke, sorry

8:51 PM
I giggled D:

also the second one has a funny joke for DOOM players
idkfa = DOOM cheat for "give me all keys and full ammo" - which is a cheat code - hint hint
and it gives you things - hint^2

ok now i'm lost...

at his current rate @Rahul2001 will have gone through the entire femal population of the world in about 10 years and will have to start dating guys
personally i can't wait to be swept off my feet for 2 crazy weeks
2

@Burgi there are only 260 women in the world? wow, no wonder I can't find anybody

@allquixotic There's 13 months in a year? Wow, no wonder time passes so slow

8:54 PM
why do you have to ruin the joke :(

@ThatBrazilianGuy ? 52 weeks / 2 week dates = 26 women per year, 10 years, 260 women
did I get it wrong?
don't calculate # of weeks per year by 4 weeks per month; the 31st day on a bunch of months makes at least part of a 52nd week depending on leap year etc

you forgot about leap women years

@Burgi now I want a leap woman
she only exists on February 29th every 4 years
take her out on an amazing date and forget her for 4 years

like orlando bloom

@allquixotic youreright

8:58 PM
...and the game crashed. Rebooted and trying again...

So... Turns out the USD 5 HDD enclosure can read 1TB Advanced Format HDDs...

we brought our house on the 29th Feb
for 3 years of every 4 we are homeless :/

This is not good. I'm seeing lots of stuttering.

@bwDraco did you reboot after driver upgraded?

I just did.
Let's analyze the data...
Curiously, the result is significantly better.
Compare to this result before the update:

9:06 PM
@djsmiley2k Where did you brought your house to?

...let's use the same scale:

@bwDraco you know games are meant to be fun right?

Of course, of course.

9:10 PM
analysing graphs after 5 minutes of playing isn't what is meant to happen... ;)

@Burgi If his fun is graphing and measuring and stuff, let him be :)

you should play eve online, a game designed to be played in a spreadsheet

We're all geeks and nerds here. We shouldn't be picking someone for their geekiness...
@Burgi From what I heard, Kerbal Space Program is also really boring fun in the same vein.

i was only checking that he noticed he was spending more time with graphs than in the game...
@ThatBrazilianGuy idk i own it but never played it

@Burgi I own 500+ games on Steam and have played less than 10% of it :(
No more steam sales for me. This time for real, I swear!

9:14 PM
speaking of which.... i wish i could extract the car telemetery from racing games....
hehe

So here's a corrected chart with some missing data added and both benchmark results (blue is old drive, red is new driver; cc @allquixotic)

my girlfriend got me £30 in steam vouchers and there isn't a sale until easter!

@Burgi Your girlfriend sounds cool :)

she is

9:15 PM
I wish mine would give me games... Or play with me =/

hold her close

she has even offered to pick me up from the pub on saturday night

:O
NEVER LET HER GO.

There are still frame time spikes but overall frame times are lower.

@bwDraco don't take this the wrong way, do you work?

9:16 PM
Well, we used to play excluisively mario wii and donkey kong on the wii, but then she cheated on me by skipping a few levels and playing by herself =/

I can just imagine you'd be excellent in some kind of analyst role

Part-time only as a sports photographer. I'll be looking for a full-time job soon enough.

@ThatBrazilianGuy :OP

@ThatBrazilianGuy what a floozy!

my wife only plays pokemon occassionally

9:19 PM
@bwDraco after the 900th spreadsheet of failed deliveries you'll learn....
anyway i'm going to go racing

co-op what on what now?
i'm guessing yo pc gamers D:

@Burgi What games you own / play?
Hmm what was that site again?

tho i'm liking FFXV

9:22 PM
@djsmiley2k Gaming PCs are the fastest growing desktop market
ping me on steam if anyone is interested

@Burgi hey, I'm not hatin
just saying
I'm a consoel gamer :O
linux, and ps4 :D

Ok, I'm rebooting into Windows so I can fire up steam.

@ThatBrazilianGuy That looks realllly cool
@Burgi You got in on the GR: Wildlands beta yet?
My Destiny clan has been playing it since lastnight, apparently it's pretty fun.

GR?

Ghost Recon

9:33 PM
ah no

Redid the charts so that the actual time (instead of the frame count) is used. This is done using a cumulative SUM function on the underlying spreadsheet.
Again, blue is old driver, red is new driver.
@allquixotic, see updated chart based on time

@bwDraco why are you doing this?

Just curious about how well this machine performs in AotS before and after a driver update.
Am I annoying anyone here?

no, its just that you seemed to know it was going to be bad while downloading the game itself

(1080p low)

9:37 PM
and you confirmed it
and ... you just confirmed it again
not annoying, just confusing
why are you beating your head against it ...

@CaffeineAddiction he's not; he's just trying to get an accurate comparison and show how his 780M performs and show that a driver update improved it significantly

Precisely.

Okay, so it's 10:45am. I've spoken with everyone that was migrated to Windows 7 last night, and they are all working happily now. I'm supposed to be here until 5pm. WTF do I do for the rest of the day? :|

@MichaelFrank facebook?
curl up in the server room and have a snooze?

Bob
@bwDraco @allquixotic eh. don't worry about spikes on that game, honestly. as long as your average is over 15fps it's somewhat playable. over 30 is good. over 20 is... okayish.
I ran it on a gtx 760 & i7-2600 @ 1080p for a while
lagged with big armies but otherwise not too bad
there's really no point trying to achieve perfection. it's a heavy game, and proud of it

9:54 PM
Java people, is there any reason why the MS JVM would be useful over something like Sun/Oracle Java 1.7?

Also, AotS is biased towards AMD hardware meaning NVIDIA has some room to grow with drivers; this last result proves it.

@MichaelFrank the Microsoft JVM hasn't been updated in years and AFAIK doesn't even exist after Windows XP; it got phased out with an update of IE 6 or something... it was designed to be able to run Java applets without installing Sun Java
on modern Windows there's no such thing as a Microsoft JVM
also Microsoft's Java only supported up to Java 1.1 or 1.2

Okay, so for an XP machine running minimum IE8 it's not useful at all?

Bob
@MichaelFrank not unless you're in the 90s

Safe to cross off the list of tech standards we give to learning module creators then?

9:57 PM
@MichaelFrank It was part of Microsoft's old "embrace-extend-extinguish" strategy, which got them sued by Sun.
@MichaelFrank Yup.

@bwDraco Yea, to the tune of $20mil ha

Bob
@MichaelFrank it's literally impossible to get from MS anymore

@MichaelFrank absolutely; but please tell your "learning module creators" not to use Java applets at all
HTML5 / ES6 can do anything Java applets could do, more or less

Jan 26 at 22:43, by bwDraco
(AotS expects 4C/4T at minimum and performs best with 8C/16T)
Perhaps I'll use it as a way to hone my (crappy) RTS skills. It's good to be well-rounded :P

@ThatBrazilianGuy have you set up a RA steam group?

10:07 PM
Yes.

ok, i was just checking that was you :)

only us two in it so far...

Regardless, I have more serious things to do as I prepare for a big event tomorrow.

@allquixotic I'm not really in a position to do that. I'm here in a different role, but ran into someone I worked with in the past and she had a question about some of the minimum specs that were on the learning module guidelines.

10:08 PM
@bwDraco remember to talk to people!
especially the cute ones

@Burgi "How you doooing?"

exactly, he is from NYC so i think he can pull it off
@bwDraco do NOT check in with us!

Yea, I 100% garuantee we'll still be here tomorrow.

go talk to people to get those social skills up that you keep worrying about

10:21 PM
For those interested, I have made a Root Access Steam group: steamcommunity.com/groups/root_access_su

Bob
@MichaelFrank java and flash are not expected to be installed these days

@Bob They are if it's part of your core image :|

@Bob It's not possible to use desktop banking without Java in most local banks here =/
Every time I need to use my bank I have to start a VM just for this.
Is it's a completely invasive monstrosity that will crept into the system
Including creating a blackboxed "network adapter" on windows and redirecting ALL YOUR TRAFFIC thru it.
!!no

@ThatBrazilianGuy ...could be a legal requirement where you live.

10:30 PM
Yes, but status quo and legal requirements are a two-way street.

J# was the literal answer to MS JVM
C# was a way to make combine the benefits of Java with C++ without using managed C++ or the successor to VB 6
Good old J# :-)

11:04 PM
just annihilated @ThatBrazilianGuy in Q3A

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy I'm talkng from the dev perspective.
Never assume Java or Flash exist.

Yeah, I suck at Quality Assurance.
I blame the lag @Burgi being secretly German.

@Bob Again, this is an internal training site on a manage network. If Java doesn't exist the workstation is out of compliance and will be rehabilitated.

LOL!

11:06 PM
it was 20 - 5 wasn't it?

Yeah, the 1st session got disconnected

you were doing better in that one

Anyways, gotta study. I'm seriously lagging behind by postponing my studies.
Thankfully one of the 5 subjects is English.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Even when Java exists, it's safer to assume it doesn't.
Especially since Firefox and Chrome have or will drop Java plugin/applet support.

That's okay we're all on IE anyway!

Bob
11:12 PM
There's a decent chance that it. Simply. Will. Not. Work. No matter how hard you beg it to, or how many times you install it.
@MichaelFrank Don't worry, just wait until Java (Oracle) stops releasing ActiveX plugins.

Not my environment, I'm sure they'll drop Java eventually though.

This is interesting...
Ryzen 7 1700 (8C/16T Zen/Summit Ridge @ 3.0-3.7 GHz, 65W) overclocked to 4.05 GHz with 240mm CLLC.
The VRMs were the limiting factor on several motherboards, though; this was the case as well when Canard PC reported a single-core 5 GHz overclock a while back.
