suggested edits do bring out the best in people

that's amazing
> Everyone know SO are maked by idiot (specially who disable the idiot people)

:))

I guess in his world only Microsoft, Apple, Google, Facebook and Twitter exist.

oh my … this morning we had -16°C :/
don't want to go out

Well, you'll feel warm if you read the temperatures here.

2:18 PM
Hm, they also have -16 now :P

Hmm, I figured out my router's heat problem
It's processor runs at 300Mhz, but Cisco had overclocked it to 384.

That explains the heat and weird performance at times

It's because you are writing for the blog, otherwise I wouldn't mention its mistake.
@slhck Okay, I agree that It's processor runs slow... :)

@TomWijsman Aaah, stop it!

Or did he mean IT's processor? confuzzled :(
@SimonSheehan Our router reboots once a day, I did a lot of setting changing yesterday to attempt to fix that.
We now have only one network instead of two and the clients automatically pick the right one.

Two networks?
@slhck meta.stackoverflow.com/q/121081/162522 Saw you commented on this... when do high rep users ever learn? sigh

@slhck Lame excuses for their own laziness. My browser knows that "maked" is not a word...

2:38 PM
@SimonSheehan Wireless and Wireless N were the names, now it's just Wireless. One was 2.4 GHz, the other 5.2 GHz. Now one combines both.

@TomWijsman Ah... weird. What router is this?

@SimonSheehan Not weird, just DD-WRT's support to host separate networks on separate antennas if you router supports it.
But to answer your question: Linksys WRT610N

Ah oky.

Uptime 21 hours, looks fine, hope it can reach two days instead of doing its daily reboot...

@SimonSheehan Oh.. didn't see they were 12k
but SO is so different when it comes to that

lots of high-rep users who don't know anything about running the site

@slhck Yeah, their 12k on SO. He's got 200+ questions and 400+ answers, you'd think he would notice things by now.
If you spend that much time on the site, maybe you should take 5 minutes to learn how the place works
It boggles my mind

On the other hand, we have too few people with vote to delete privileges

Well, SU is a bit smaller.

2:45 PM
@SimonSheehan 18 rep per post is pretty bad. Must be a lot of zero score stuff.

@DanielBeck Yeah, It likely is.
He's got a few OK answers, lots of 0 score questions.

@tombull89 cool

@slhck Indeed, I wonder why he made a more confusing diagram of it rather than just saying what he wants...

@SimonSheehan Studiohack has 17 rep per post on SU. Odd. Let's see if I can find something to vote on.

2:59 PM
@DanielBeck Heh, interesting

@SimonSheehan In case you're bored: Data.SE query.

Ill take a look in a minute :p

23 rep per post, hmm, interesting...
Although it's more like "write some posts, hope that one gets 8 upvotes"

Hes good on that query :p

@TomWijsman I think that's how splattne got #1. 5 or so very popular posts, and not that many posts total.
Although he really has a very large percentage of popular answers with 4+ votes.

3:03 PM
Average is a bad measure anyway
I'd love to see some quantiles

@slhck That query about exhausted my SQL-fu. Feel free to improve it.

@DanielBeck Haha, that was no personal request :) My SQL sucks.

Ok, anyone know of a decent laptop for text editing that's not heavy and is under $350 at Best Buy?
(Localized)
Ok, let's take a step back.

If varnish is running on a machine in front of my apache machine, will every http request still show up in apache's access log?

3:08 PM
A cheap not-too-heavy laptop?

@Moshe A netbook?

@slhck Wow. Yeah. Have fun.

@SimonSheehan For word-processing?

@Moshe Sure, why not - screens large enough that text will be fine, and its cheap. Word processing doesn't take much more than an atom CPU

@slhck Note that reputation has no meaningful percentiles, only scores have. So it's an entirely different thing.

3:10 PM
@DanielBeck Yeah, it's just a huge query, that's all :)
@DaSilva_Ireland Don't know how it's configured to work with Apache, but if it's a cache, the whole point would be that Apache doesn't have to serve the site again
@DaSilvaIreland If at all, it'd probably show you the IP of Varnish itself, rather than the remote IP.. See here: cd34.com/blog/scalability/varnish-and-apache2

For all you windows experts, my friend just joined SU and has a question about the task-scheduler here..
1
Q: Rebooting the machine via shutdown.exe triggers the Shutdown Event Tracker

spidEYI have a scheduled task that runs once a week which performs a simple reboot of the machine. The problem is that once the system is rebooted, it thinks that the last shutdown was unexpected and then it asks me to specify a reason for it. This is the command that the Task Scheduler runs: C:\Wind...

@slhck Cheers

Any good free steam games ??

@HackToHell Basically no, besides Team Fortress 2

@SimonSheehan how big is it?

3:21 PM
@HackToHell Well I think its 10GB or so now. 6GB download

6 GB !!! Anyway to download compressed and smaller

Nope.
Steam's downloader is the only way.

gr8, steam sucks :P

No it doesnt :P
Not at all

My internet connection is the one that actually sucks :'( My speed's 64 kbps

3:24 PM
You really can't download any game in reasonable time on that connection
Might wanna upgrade or go to a friends and download
TF2 will need at least a 100kb/s connection to play anyway

@HackToHell you mean 64KBps / 512Kbps

@Sathya yep :'(

if it's the BSNL 750 plan, it's been upgraded to 1Mb till 6GB, 512k afterwords
and FUUUUUUUUUU VMWare
protip: Don't Download VMWare Player 4.0.2. Can't install VMWare tools on that version

@Sathya They changed the plan !! i did not know that I get 1 Mbps till 6 gb

it's as of today

3:30 PM
@Sathya So it will be implemented from the next month ?? cause i do not see a speed increase

Okay, Word, seriously, why would you suggest me to not put a space behind a comma?

@HackToHell you should be seeing it

@slhck Haha

@DanielBeck Have you ever used Word for Mac?

@Sathya i will call up BSNL in the morning and ask, what are you using Airtel ? They do not have decent unlimited plans

3:36 PM
which circle are you in?
it's enabled only for limited circles.

@slhck Installed it to get the fonts. Does that count?

I'm using BSNL, Airtel doesn't provide in this area @HackToHell

@Sathya Tamil Nadu

@DanielBeck Haha … no :) But I can see why you wouldn't want to go through the pains of actually workng with it.

@slhck It breaks keyboard shortcut reassignments and (AFAIK) services. So it's just crap software without proper platform integration. No thanks.

3:38 PM
@Sathya Are you using the 1350 ULD plan ?

@DanielBeck It's really the most horrible piece of software I've ever seen on OS X. If it were an unknown developer without resources, I'd understand the lack of platform integration. But on Office for Mac, everything's seriously beyond broken.
Not even the basic text input shortcuts work.

@slhck Why should they? NIH.

@slhck: invariably, software written for other OSes by OS makers suck

My favorite policy.

3:39 PM
@slhck Let me guess, the emacs keybindings don't work either?

@DanielBeck Haha, what's "emacs"? This …… UNIX thing?

@JourneymanGeek I rather like Safari on Windows. Better than IE, at least.

why would office have emacs keybindings?

No, they even break default Command / Option mappings for text movements

3:40 PM
@JourneymanGeek Every native text input field on OS X has emacs keybindings.

@DanielBeck: the current one isn't bad. I'm a chrome/FF man myself

For movement, editing, etc.

It's actually the most productive thing I've ever used, and I miss it so bad on other OSes

@JourneymanGeek Chrome and FF have absolutely horrible OS integration (again) on OS X. So I'm stuck with Safari.
@slhck They broke Opt-Left etc?

@HackToHell yes

3:42 PM
@DanielBeck These work in Word, but in Excel, opt-left does nothing at all. Cmd-left leaves the editing mode, et cetera.
and of course, no emacs bindings

@slhck Well, Pages breaks Opt-Left/Right as well in tables...

so when I want to go to the beginning of the cell, I have to use left to get back :)
no wait, that doesn't work either
I have to click, actually. Don't know of anything better :P
@DanielBeck Yeah, but at least the emacs bindings work there.

:| get a BSOD whenever I try to copy a huge file to my external HDD

Amazon launched in India as Junglee ... it's funny junglee.com

@HackToHell We're in Beta
Who wants to buy something from a store in beta?

3:57 PM
lol
@DanielBeck It's highly undependable because amazon itself does not ship!

@Sathya Feel free to upload the MEMORY.DMP or a minidump and I can look for you.

but smaller merchants...

1.2 crore products... that's 12 million, right?

yep

@TomWijsman it's a huge file, ~670 MB uncompressed
it's not a store here
it's just a listing place
they don't sell yet

4:00 PM
@Sathya like eBay without auctions?

Like ebay

@DanielBeck yes, that's how ebay is in India
On Thu 02-02-2012 15:42:36 GMT your computer crashed
crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: ntkrnlmp.exe (nt!KeAcquireSpinLockAtDpcLevel+0x20F)
Bugcheck code: 0x7A (0xFFFFF6FC4000B960, 0xFFFFFFFFC000009D, 0x12EFB5860, 0xFFFFF8800172C944)

Bug check description: This bug check indicates that the requested page of kernel data from the paging file could not be read into memory.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver which cannot be identified at this time.
@TomWijsman ^^ whocrashed output

Seems like it locks somewhere, and that's what I need the file for. :D

well, 7zipped it's 87 Mb :\

Or alternatively do it over TeamViewer on your computer.

4:04 PM
sounds good

Yeah, some parts of memory are repetitive.

it gets better and better

@slhck Well, at least you tried. Some are a lost cause.

I really believe this site needs some sort of … test for people before they can post here :/
any experienced Windows user who understands that answer?

A: Install Windows XP on a removable hard drive

Siva CharanUse VMware for installing the Operating System. So that it can be movable easily. VMware Player The Easiest Way to Run a Virtual Machine

@slhck Honestly, it doesn't answer the question very well

4:12 PM
Why would I need to run VMware Player (and where?!) if I wanted to install Windows on an external HD?

You don't - this guys confused
I really don't like the whole Virtual machine thing lately

Obviously, yeah

Because every other answer is becoming "DO IT IN A VM BLAH BLAH BLAH"

@SimonSheehan It's fun

@HackToHell It's no fun :(

4:13 PM
@HackToHell Not if you want good performance.

@slhck Common guys .. running Linux from Windows 7 is really time saving @SimonSheehan

@HackToHell Running an operating system with a Unix foundation is time saving :P
Okay, enough with the trolling.

Running Linux from Windows 7 is the worst for me :/

@slhck :P @SimonSheehan why ?? 0_O

@HackToHell I find Windows 7 uses a ridiculous amount of RAM, and then the VM uses more than it's supposed to. In the end, I just get annoyed.

4:17 PM
@SimonSheehan 7 runs under 500 mb of RAM and VM usually uses up 1~1.5 gigs of RAM ... that's not bad

@HackToHell Not for me - Fresh install, and it uses 700+ MB of RAM.
I wish we hadn't left Windows XP :(

@SimonSheehan Don't ya worry according to Steven Sinofsky, 8 uses less memory @TomWijsman you use 8 right ? How much mem does it use?

By the time Windows 8 comes out, I will have left Windows.

Well, more than they showed.
But I believe they showed the DP --> Beta memory, not the DP memory.
2.2 GB now, let me see how it's divided.

In a year and a half or so, I move to Mac.

4:21 PM
2.2 gigs ### ! @SimonSheehan Run to Linux

@SimonSheehan Reinforcements for \o/

@DanielBeck Haha yeah - I'm slowly moving in! :P
Since I spend a lot of school time on (my) iMac, its giving me some more experience

Never used a Mac b4

When I go to college, they actually REQUIRE you to get a Macbook for the course im going into

@SimonSheehan What course is it?

4:23 PM

@SimonSheehan Tie up with apple ? :P

@DanielBeck Multimedia Design. One sec.

@SimonSheehan OK, makes some sense, if they use software only available for OS X etc.

like Final Cut ??

@SimonSheehan "You will also work extensively in our mobile and MAC labs" omg

4:24 PM
@DanielBeck Well all the adobe products are transitioning to 64-Bit only, and it apparently performs better on Mac. The course uses mostly adobe products

@DanielBeck Haha I saw that.
I think that parts a bit old

@SimonSheehan Isn't it nice, you have media access control labs :)

@DanielBeck :P

@TomWijsman I too run F.Lux

4:25 PM

@DanielBeck here are the laptop requirements
Apple Macintosh laptop (Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch base configuration) with:

Intel Core i7 2.0 GHz or faster;
4 GB of memory minimum;
500 GB hard drive or larger;
15-inch display or larger;
Radeon HD 6490 M graphics with 256MB GDDR5 or better; and
AppleCare protection Plan for MacBook Pro is highly recommended (auto-enrol).

@SimonSheehan Still, they're available on Windows. I don't see the need.

"Apple Macintosh" kinda made me laugh.

@HackToHell Yeah, first times I didn't get used to it. Now it runs fluently without me getting bothered.

@DanielBeck There's a reason behind it, I can't remember why. I know it's definitely something to do with the Adobe master collection though (which they give to you for free)

4:27 PM
@SimonSheehan This is insane. What possible reason could there be to get a 15" instead of a 13"...
@SimonSheehan OK, maybe only licensed for Macs. Would make sense.

@DanielBeck Pixels. Graphics work sucks on a small screen :P

@TomWijsman My mom insists on running it ... do not know where she read abt it.

@SimonSheehan Get a 27" screen then.
Or are you working on your own machine in some lab there?

@DanielBeck Haha. Honestly, I'm not going to argue with it - I do want a Mac :p

Do SU a favor and upvote this piece of crap: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3543318

4:29 PM
@DanielBeck Honestly, no idea - I don't go to the school for another year or two
brb, lunch\

@DanielBeck I would love a 27 inch Mac screen, but the price tag is rather painful and its not really compatible with Windows

@IvoFlipse Get a Dell. Problem solved.

@DanielBeck I didn't expect that out of your mouth ;P

@IvoFlipse Why? Dell make good, cheap(er) screens.

I know, I'm looking at one right now. Though my cheap ass Acer seems better (might be calibration though)

4:32 PM
:P

I'm pretty happy with mine.

It seems most 27 inch screens are LED, wonder if it matters
ah crap, that Dell. That's the same MF as the Mac screens, only slightly cheaper

@IvoFlipse I forgot my password. o_O

@IvoFlipse ?

@TomWijsman I couldn't get my openid set up there either
I thought it was a 1080p screen, but the 2560 x 1440 ones are more than twice as expensive

4:36 PM
@IvoFlipse Still much cheaper than Apple's
523€ vs. 891€ in Germany.

that Dell 523?
its 832 euro on the Dutch dell site
if it were 523, I'd seriously consider it

@IvoFlipse geizhals.de/505885 ... 523€ + shipping
And as you can see, not just one store.

Pardon me here...

holy crap

How do I summon Clippy?

4:39 PM
That aught to do it :P

Damnit, @IvoFlipse. You got in the picture!

@IvoFlipse I paid 544€ on Amazon mid december.
@IvoFlipse Getting a new screen?

I want a 3rd screen
I'm sick of alt tabbing all day long

My second screen is rather small (uses it to watch chat.SE when not in his browser)

I have 2 x 22 inch screens

4:43 PM
@IvoFlipse 1680x1050?

yeah
but I'm not planning on sticking with these smaller ones
still that high res screen is perhaps a bit too overpriced, given that I also need to buy a second GPU (stupid Nvidia doesn't power more than 2 screens)

@IvoFlipse Get 24" 1920x1200 then. They're also quite nice and might have more value for the money.
@slhck The user accepted my Automator workflow answer!

My first thought was a 27 inch with that resolution, but it given that I don't get more pixels, it might be a good idea not to (won't gain any pixels anyway)

Hmm, have any of these values changed between the upper and lower half?
Dunno how to do check that quickly.
Is there a text editor or something where I can paste in the left and right parts and compare? :D
Awesome!
No differences, seems my algorithm is somehow not executing. :D
How do I
|¯¯██¯¯██¯¯██♞██
██__██__██__██__|
|__██♔██__██__██
██__██__██♘██__|
?

@IvoFlipse I never saw the point of bigger pixels. I can see good enough to handle the smaller screens with a particular resolution.

Multi line Clippy <3. :)

@DanielBeck exactly, besides it only takes up more space, give me cramps in my neck and all :P

@DanielBeck Well, he did partially fix it; I fixed it some more so it could be considered to be reopened...
We collided into each other edits though, the revision history is kinda weird. superuser.com/posts/385239/revisions :D

5:10 PM
@TomWijsman Just a few more and it's CW ;)

Yeah, he went back to my revision which I didn't saw, I thought he want back to an earlier revision of him so that was kinda confusing so I just went back to mine and edited in his title change.

@JourneymanGeek Congrats on finally getting an answer to your 500 bounty question!

@DanielBeck @SimonSheehan interesting stat... I don't know a whole lot, so many of my answers aren't that great or are pretty low zero score stuff

@studiohack I'm MADE of 0 score answers ;)

@SimonSheehan wow really? my fastest rep gain ever on SE is now outdoors... 1K rep in 8 days. shatters anything else I've done

5:21 PM
@studiohack Isn't it always like this in the early days of a site?

@studiohack Haha, nice! I think my rep grows fastest on MSO

I mean when you check out the topics on SU from '09, the votes are ridiculous...

@DanielBeck you're right, because all the easy questions are there
I get tons of votes asking if iodine water purification tabs are okay and only a few on a lengthy post about identifying bears (with pictures, bullets and the whole shebang)

@studiohack Check the sidebar. 21h ago by slhck.

@DanielBeck I know, I read that a number of times
sadly, it's very true

5:30 PM
@studiohack Well, what's your solution?

@DanielBeck frankly, I don't have one. on the q&a level, I'm just another user, like the rest of ya

Maybe we could do something like "Question of the Week", but focusing on good answers. Just a (CW?) Meta topic with links to interesting, detailed answers that actually explain stuff instead of linking to a downloads page or only containing an unexplained code snippet.
The Wall of Text Awareness Topic!

Hi

Well, it's what is explained in this:
Posted by Jeff Atwood on January 31st, 2012

Way back in 2008, we had Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, the founders and co-creators of Reddit, on the Stack Overflow podcast. We chatted about a bunch of stuff, but one of the things they said that always stuck with me was that Reddit always took an explicitly hands-off, no moderation approach to their content from the very beginning.

I found that a bit shocking, since I’ve… never seen that work. Certainly on Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange we are very much pro-moderation — and more so with every passing year. We have literally hundreds of community moderators. We spend  …

Do we think that anything needs to be done for this question (regarding moving/editing/etc)?

Q: Does the command-line copy command work in 64-bit Windows?

Mike WillsI am automating a script which includes: copy \\192.168.0.200\exportfiles\customersbysalesperson.csv %USERPROFILE%\Documents The customer responded to me saying: The PCO session A command prompt screen comes up. 5:41 PM
no

I thought so too.
Wanted to get other opinions.

if anything that ought to be closed since it's basically hearsay repeated

What part?
Say, hearsay is heresey, here!
... I couldn't resist. :P

BTW does anybody know why Meta questions don't count towards tag scores?

5:55 PM
@sidran32 pretty sweet! perhaps I'll have to delay the purchase of my first WP until Apollo comes out

@studiohack In the technology world, sometimes waiting isn't a bad idea. :P

@sidran32 late 2012... hmmm. maybe I'll make a tracfone work for a while

@studiohack I believe that all existing Windows Phones will get the update too, though.

@sidran32 yeah, but some of the features will require new hardware
like multicore support

And NFC, ya.

5:59 PM
scratch that. the phone I want is the LG Quantum. which I now have to buy unlocked, since ATT doesn't carry it anymore.
since a physical keyboard is a must
