7:00 PM
my isp is win
they have datacaps

@Mokubai It says I didn't use it. But they charge on the very first single byte transferred.

but exceed them only results in slower line
more exceedance = slower for longer
but i've never managed to hit them, even doing archiveteam stuff :/

@ThatBrazilianGuy Or there are programs such as Internet Speed Meter Lite which I use to mainly see my download speed, but can be useful to see data caps too

Also they quite open and honest about the fact

@Mokubai I'm looking at its screen now :)

7:02 PM
@djsmiley2k Yeah, we used to have cable internet that did that. 100Mbps line, after 5GB per evening it slows to 60Mbps, then after 10 it goes to 40Mbps. Oh no, 40Mbps... how will I live?

Lol. Gotta love VM's "fastest fibre broadband" that gets throttled to hell if you use it for more than 15 minutes.

> after 5GB per evening
O_o

The upload speeds were the worst, even before the throttling.
@ThatBrazilianGuy It's based on tier. Basically, 15 minutes at full speed.

@qwertyuiop does it tho?

Although... I haven't ever measured my router data usage.

7:03 PM
@djsmiley2k Not anymore.

because as I said, i've never been throttled.
So unless im some kinda special pancake

I use Netflix, I have a Chromecast, I use Steam, I download linux ISOs...
I have two laptops and two mobile phones... I do wonder what is my current monthly data usage.

@djsmiley2k There's been ten years of forum discussions on this topic, and it's been officially published on VM's website, NTL's website, and Telewest's website before VM even existed.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Yeah, that's pretty much us here. Lots of gadgets, games and films. Cannot be done on a capped connection.

I'd have to use some sort of monitoring on the router. If it was easy cheap, I'd get another Pi just for that and go PiWRT.

7:05 PM
The worst thing about VM is the terribad hardware that can't support the service
use your own router and them in modmem mode
you'll get all the speeds
@qwertyuiop src plz
Yes, you could cause the superhub and stuff to go into meltdown quite easily, but just using it in modem mode, you'd find you're not actually throttled..

@qwertyuiop yes
....
15minutes of usage tho?

2250MB at 12Mbps = how long?
I'd like some help with the math :)
When does it apply 4PM - 11PM
Unit conversion:
25 minutes

When does it apply 5PM - 10PM

7:09 PM
why are we seeing different figures?

You're not even looking at the right part of the page

Oh wait
Did you choose the slow one?

I told you download throttling was removed a few years ago

When does it apply 11AM - 11PM

Only the ancient/legacy tariffs have it

7:09 PM
...
i'm looking at the upload on the fastest service
200Mbit

Because if you're a heavy user, that's what you'd use, right?
K, so it's only on uploads? They looking pretty good right now
compared to every other crap we have.

Why are you even talking about upload throttling when everyone else was giving numbers for download throttling which doesn't exist anymore?

And there's nothing on the Vivid 200 which would kick in, in 15 minutes
because I'm pointing out your figure of 15 minutes is illusionary, or historical.

ffs learn to read

7:11 PM
I'm the devils advocate, I can't help myself.

We were talking about historical download caps, that have nothing to do with the upload numbers you're quoting

8 mins ago, by qwertyuiop
Lol. Gotta love VM's "fastest fibre broadband" that gets throttled to hell if you use it for more than 15 minutes.

Nobody even said the word "upload" until you started trying to twist the numbers.
8 mins ago, by qwertyuiop
@djsmiley2k Not anymore.

right

Crikey

7:12 PM
just trying to point otu the issue is likely due to the crappy h/w they provide btw
meh

The upload's still pish compared to everyone else

who's everyone else,
the UK's everyone else?

200Mb service has a slower upload than BT's 80Mb service

Bt, Sky... talktalk? haha

Slower upload than EE's 30Mb service
Slower upload than my goddamn mobile phone

7:13 PM
12Mbps?

BT had 20Mbps upload for years before VM's 200Mb was even released

Actual working 20Mbps upload?
on a non-business line?
I'm honestly asking, because I've never experienced it :/
Maybe it exists in london or something.

@djsmiley2k Right in central London, next door to the exchange. Second door down got 768kbps

16.6Mbps upload on my BT line four years ago.
VM's 12Mbps upload top tier hasn't even been around one year, and it's still slower than what BT had in 2012
And BT's upload is not throttled or shaped and has no P2P throttling either

You upload that much?

7:17 PM
@Mokubai A 1 minute FRAPS video sent to Youtube is like 3GB

@qwertyuiop You need to invest in a h.264 encoder...

@qwertyuiop What, 4K gaming video?

@Mokubai Lol
Why bother, Youtube has to convert it again multiple times anyway. I'd rather waste their CPU cycles than mine.
@djsmiley2k 400 miles away from London (Aberdeen). 18.7Mbps upload. BT's standard consumer service.
@ThatBrazilianGuy 1080p60. FRAPS uses lossless encoding, like 150MB/sec

@qwertyuiop Then re-encode the files prior to upload. Problem solved.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Why bother?
Waste of time, waste of power, and reduces quality and increases artifacts.

7:21 PM
@qwertyuiop Because you're killing the intertubes

There's zero benefit vs. my lazy method of... let Youtube do the uploading
@Mokubai Hardly. BT's got far more capacity than can possibly be used by uploading
All the cabinets are provisioned with symmetric GbE fibre, for 80 down 20 up service. i.e. there's equal upload and download capacity, but lines are configured to only ever be able to use 25% as much upload.

@qwertyuiop Well, the head of the telecom association blamed the gamers when questioned about data caps being introduced nationwide on jan 2017. Guess he was right after all...
[/sarcasm]

@qwertyuiop Not round here they're not. Useless gits.

@ThatBrazilianGuy The decent operators here have no caps, they removed them in 2010/2011 when they had enough capacity to not need them.
@Mokubai Are you even on FTTC?

No. Because BT like fondling themselves

7:23 PM
He pretty much said "we're now enforcing data caps because gamers" yadda yadda series of tubes.

@Mokubai Right, so the FTTC cabinet capacity is relevant to you how?
Sure they basically said "couldn't be bothered" to about 50% of the country...

Brazil has an amazing landscape but sometimes I seriously ponder about the downsides.

Because while they're focused on upgrading all the top-tier users they're ignoring the upgrades that need to happen elsewhere

... but that doesn't change the fact it's basically impossible to "flood" BT's infrastructure by uploading 24/7 on FTTC services.
@Mokubai That sounds more like VM.
BT haven't "upgraded" or changed any of their tiers for five years...

@qwertyuiop I can believe they've not upgraded anything for 5+ years.

7:26 PM
In fact the only change to their only two FTTC tiers since 2011 is the bottom tier got upgraded from 38Mbps to 50-something Mbps
Looks more and more likely the top tier is never going to change, until they roll out FTTdP infrastructure which is apparently going to happen between 2017 and 2025.
They could theoretically deliver 200Mbps download service via the existing cabs, but various plans for that went silent :-/
> Save 10% on 1 Esynic USB External Floppy Disk Drive For every 1 Qualifying items you purchase offered by eSynic.
Lol, just what I really need, a USB External Floppy Disk Drive

Yawn
Anyone fire me outta a cannon in the direction of home?

@djsmiley2k Whose home?

Altiris is failing to deploy jobs annoyingly
@Mokubai right now anyones will do
Anywhere but here!!
...the beatings will continue....

...indefinitely (we don't care about morale)
Or the theme for the other side...

8:07 PM
I saw an awesome led matrix display that great scott! featured on his channel
I really wanna build it, but I have no bandsaw
so I'm wondering how t og oabout it without going crazy
Any of you guys do projects like this at all?

@djsmiley2k I do!

ah yes robot man!
so, can you reccomend a starter kit from amazon?
For Arduino
I have a raspi and done some simple gpio stuff on that
but it's not really indepth enough for me to scratch this itch I have :P

8:24 PM
@djsmiley2k I find one of these helps when I have an itch I can't scratch :)
I keep one on my desk ...

anyone else having issues with portal 2 tonight?

@djsmiley2k I actually went to a shop and hand-picked parts
amazon isn't very reliable here...
Indian website, though...

Can anybody else open the following question?

Q: Hard Drive Not Accessible Access Denied

JosephI am currently attempting to transfer files from an internal server to an external server based terminal. I have copied the files I need onto an external hard drive using the internal based server. However, when I attempt to use the external hard drive on the external machine I get an error that...

I'm getting "503 Service Unavailable" but only for that particular question :/

@DavidPostill um... yeah?

Never mind. Ctrl+reload fixed it. Bizarre

9:51 PM
@Rahul2001 I'm UK based aahhhhh
Wow that kit is expensive here

10:14 PM
So.
The future of my country is in the balance.
The future of my... well, everything is in the balance

10:34 PM
gah!
the mcafee scheduled scan is killing my pc

@Bob I'm off tomorrow and Monday so if there are some bonus gaming sessions in you, I'm up for them.
and by "tomorrow and Monday" I mean U.S. Friday and U.S. Monday
that means the nights where I don't care how late I stay up include: tonight (~6 hours from now), and similar time slots for the following three nights.
or I can play during your (early) evening, depending on when exactly that is for me

Bob
11:30 PM
@allquixotic Sure, sounds good.
I think I need to pull out the calendar :P
We do have fairly poor timing - I was off last Friday (and Monday before that) :P
I need to get a new card for my phone... the MicroSD seems to have failed O_O
