People think I have not got a Pentium 2 processor. I do!

@Edity just grab a 32 bit distro and try it
Something like debian's a good idea

Q: I broke the little plastic piece on my hard drive port, what can I do?

madmadaI broke the little plastic piece on my hard drive port, like in this image What can I do? Btw I found this solution while searching online, but it's impractical https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3oezp97xqdU

On one hand, I wonder how someone did it

No I got 8.1 on it

On the other I broke a USB port (twice) and more or less fixed it the first way I suggested, since it wasn't covered by the warranty the first time

D:
Screw you Microsoft! Did you know how many times I had to contact Customer Service?
9+10=21 times

5:15 AM
._.
Language

Sorry

also Math

I'm just... mad.
And that was a pun

You clearly need some psudoscience to handle the trifecta

Hehe

Bob
5:16 AM
@Edity That sounds about right.
See: how many times I've called them

Ok Moving on
dis looks fancy ^

I wonder what's it with HP and their obsession with audio enhancers and stuff like that

@JourneymanGeek ahh... you can see how one company goes so far with their prodcuts
Dis is my comp ^

@Edity Ask @Bob about beats
and I turn off DTS on my stream

Beats from dre?
Sure I have one
A bluetooth one doe.... :D

5:20 AM
Beats getting a hot poker to the ear? Possibly not.

Or a hot nail... thats worse....
You just need to calm down some more

You have any trouble out of your HP? @Edity ? Repaired so many to count over the years that ive never wanted to purchase or own one.

Nope

What model is that?

15 years and still feels like new.
Pavillion dv6
With outdated vista key :D

5:24 AM
You are lucky then.
Ive repaired over 40 with Gpu solder cracking.

HP special edition
Wow

Of that exact model.
Although otherwise they run rather smooth.

LOL

@NetworkKingPin heh, my stream's been a total dream
I wouldn't buy a high end HP tho

lol

5:27 AM
Ive thought about getting a laptop again. Would really help.

me neither
nope jk

Bob
> 15 years
> vista key
...uhm.

@Bob yup

Bob
That adds up like 150 + 300 = 1000 adds up
Which, according to CSS tables, it does.

0_0
Pretty sure XP is less than 15 years old.

5:28 AM
O_0

Bob
I may or may not have been bashing my head against a wall for the better part of the day dealing with that.

lol

Bob
@JourneymanGeek XP was 2002, late 2001 maybe for RTM (not GA)

Ive dealt with 7 Bricked units at work tonight so far such a Joy!

Bob
5:29 AM
HP is... interesting.
They do make some nice units.
But their mainstream consumer products are usually crap.
Mine was so heavily sabotaged by Beats it wasn't funny.
Turn off the equaliser? Here, let's turn the bass way down and treble way up so you can tell that the equaliser sounds better!
Oh, and let's reset it on every reboot and at random times too!
Even the bloody hardware was sabotaged.

hell wick pack lard XD

Bob
Let's put a useless dinky subwoofer in! (I'm convinced I've never heard the damn thing...)
And skimp on the hinge supports on that side too!
(Incidentally, that'd be the hinge that completely fell apart one day during normal use...)

DIE SUBWOOFER DIE

You have a problem with subwoofers?
!!baroo

5:32 AM
AWWWWW

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I have a problem with subwoofers in laptops. More so when they sacrifice structural support for it.

@Bob yeah, I totally get that

wish i can !!info baroo

and you don't have the space for a proper subwoofer anyway, even with all the cheap tricks
@Edity I added that waaaaay back

oh
it "locks" so CUTE

Bob
5:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek See: "never heard the damn thing"

Ok off to Ask Ubuntu General Chat

6:14 AM
@allquixotic quick question. If I had to go fully mobile with internet LTE 4G or whatever , and needed about 200MB a month. Using a dongley like network adapter into a desktop pc, that say a telecom might provide. Which service(s) shoul i check first in the US (actually california) or how would that go where you are?

I am upgrading my Hp computer

6:31 AM

aww
now windows 10 downloads without my consent.

6:50 AM
@edity did you have recommended updates auto install? because I think windows 10 is a recommended update.

optional for me

7:26 AM
hey

mkdir -p and mkdir have no difference on my powershell, in fact I have to type mkdir -Path

Bob
@JossieCalderon You could use -pa
mkdir : Parameter cannot be processed because the parameter name 'p' is ambiguous. Possible matches include: -Path
-PipelineVariable.
Usually when that happens you just need enough characters to disambiguate.

@Bob that works! Thanks for the tip, I shall include more characters to discern between arguments.

But still, whether I type `mkdir -pa i/like/turtles` or `mkdir i/like/turtles`, I still get the same result.

Bob
@JossieCalderon ...what results were you expecting?
Technically, the -Path accepts a positional parameter, so if you don't specify differently then the first arg you provide is taken as -Path

@Bob Huh? mkdir -p works here. And help mkdir doesn't mention -PipelineVariable. Is this a powershell version thing?

Bob
@DavidPostill Possibly.
I'm currently on 4

@Bob I'm on 5 after upgrading a few days ago ...

POWER TURTLEE..oh i mean shell

7:45 AM
hmmm I thougth there was no women in tech :P

@JourneymanGeek heres a little pun: subway "woof" errors "such a pain in the head"

@Bob If they both yield the same result, what's the point of including -p?

Welcome @Rahul2001 to Root Access!

@Edity We normally only welcome first time visitors ... :)

;p

7:50 AM
:P
I like greeting users- new or used

@Rahul2001 Welcome brother!!!
;)
@Edity I like how you said used.

Bob
@JossieCalderon It's optional.

lol

Bob
Read the link I gave you.

do you think windows will ever ship with an ssh client?

7:52 AM
idts

@Burgi doesn't the new unix thingy include one?

Bob
@DavidPostill That's for dev/client only.
@Burgi They already promised OpenSSH w/ PowerShell. For Server 2016, IIRC.

@Burgi if it shipped out of the box with a default password and username it may be a bad thing. Since a lot of users would never even use it.
Rendering it an open door

Bob
@NetworkKingPin Shipping with an SSH server does not mean enabling it by default.
Also, there's no such thing as a default password on Windows.
The built-in SSH server would obviously auth with a Windows account by default.

@Bob gotcha so just the preinstalled base package that a user can activate.

Bob
7:55 AM
@NetworkKingPin Even if it were running by default (and it might be for Server Nano), it's no different from how sshd is already set up on many Linux server distros either.
Auth using local user accounts, which have passwords set.

@Bob Thanks for the clarification.

Bob
Not as secure as a pubkey, to be sure, but still the default in just about every current implementation.
(Of course, until release we can't know for sure what they do, but using the Windows account is just... glaringly obvious. And something other SSH servers for Windows already do, including the Cygwin OpenSSH port.)
@DavidPostill looks like it changed in PS 5

@Bob ah ok.

Bob
-PipelineVariable still exists
So most likely the ambiguity resolution just got smarter

@Bob I did not know -p was positional and optional until I read the link. Thanks.
*the contents of the link

8:00 AM
@NetworkKingPin :D
@Edity :p

Bob
@JossieCalderon Keep in mind that we're talking PowerShell. If you're talking about the GNU mkdir, that's entirely different.

I got pinged.

@Bob Correct

Did you know God of war backwards is raw fo dog?

8:06 AM
@Bob Thx

THERE IS A DOG
LOL

this channel certainly attracts some... interesting characters
also when did i manage to leapfrog @NetworkKingPin in rep?
i just had to approve one of his edits...

@Burgi because you are a boss.

Bob
Because he's been slacking off

i don't want to become "the man"

8:13 AM
Also a lot of the answers i work on just get abandoned by whoever posted the question. Guess thats how life works. Maybe they will come around.

@NetworkKingPin heh. I assume if my answer is awesome enough, people will upvote em

@JourneymanGeek touche.

Speaking of which
I need to delete that question I asked when trying to fix my friend's computer
We wiped it, so there's no way to resolve it

Looked about 10 answers i gave all the users abandoned the question lol. Guess I will let them sit i know there are more. Maybe someone will find them useful one day.

@NetworkKingPin as I often tell people - You arn't just answering a question for the OP
You're answering it for the next person who has that problem

8:22 AM
I dont feel like ive wasted my time at least. In fact I use this to pass my time at work. When im not too busy.

superuser.com/questions/1088955/… <- sadly I can't ask the one question that would crack this question wide open
what torrent?

I was seeing if they would spill because the hash is obviously fake. I was going to point that out.

is there a website that shows each graphic card and their respectively weight?

Bob
Probably not in table form

cause recently was reading an article about a heavy graphic card that start to sag after a few months

8:28 AM
@NetworkKingPin or the hash is literally a string of zeros.
@user275517 0_0

@JourneymanGeek that would be interesting.

@bob

Bob
...PCBs don't sag

@Bob can explain further?
the graphic card sag, not the motherboard .
or tilted down due to weight
and was thinking if there are any casing that is more graphic card friendly.
any recommendation?

Bob
Try screwing in the provided bracket

8:32 AM
@user275517 literally, you have a solid stiff piece of fibreglass (which does not sag) bolted securely to a big piece of metal, sometimes with heatpipes (which do not sag) a set of rigid plastic fan-housings (which do not sag) supported by by a metal bracket and a long socket...
Quite literally, if a graphics card sags, someone's cheaped out on the PCB, heatsink, fans....

@user275517 are you able to provide a link to that article?

Oh, and many high end cards have a rigid backplate, which supports the PCB too

here a picture that show someone using a pen as a support to prevent the graphic card from sag (cdn.overclock.net/a/a9/…)

the photo looks like it was taken with a potato... and the shroud looks strange

that looks like a harddrive it is supporting

8:35 AM
got a link to the actual thread?

@JourneymanGeek Basically contradicting everything you just said. Some graphics cards won't sag, because they're made correctly. Others might, because they aren't made to standards that won't sag.
I've had cards that are gravity challenged on the corner furthest from the bracket/PCI slot.

@MichaelFrank I have a 980TI so... long and heavy

o.O
oo er missus

unfortunately, there is currently no website that list graphic card and their weight, otherwise, this information will be quite useful when considering a graphic card

8:42 AM
you could probably check on the specification sheet for the card

currently, what I can think of was to have a graphic card friendly casing that look like the ancient desktop casing.
@Burgi most of the spec sheet don't provide such info.

@MichaelFrank would be specific cards tho and not a purely weight thing?

@user275517 the graphics card held with a pen made me die. Unless he did not use the screws or lost them it should not Bow. My card is pretty hefty and stays in place with out bowing.

Bob
@MichaelFrank sounds more like faulty bracket or slot
Takes a lot more than a bit of cooler weight to do that
Hell there's significant pressure just holding the heatsink on

8:49 AM
by the way, is there any desktop casing whereby the motherboard is place horizontal instead of vertical? this might help with future graphic card that will get more bigger and heavier.
any recommendation?

you could just lie the box on its side

@Burgi, but I will have a problem putting the cd or dvd horizontal

the shuttle XPC cases had horizontal mainboards

Bob
@user275517 most drives work in either orientation

@user275517 you could use this case coolermaster.com/case/lan-box/haf-xb

Bob
8:52 AM
There's little clips that hold it

@Bob I was thinking if running the cd or dvd at very fast speed horizontal damage the medium or the drive itself.
@NetworkKingPin that case u recommend looks good
but can only support two 3.5 inch hdd

@user275517 @NetworkKingPin coolermaster.com/case/lan-box/haf-xb-evo
New version does more
and most modern systems use SSDs for the boot drive anyway

@JourneymanGeek I forgot about the evo.

@NetworkKingPin If I want a smaller case, that's my choice

Thought about using one of those in build. But I love full towers.

8:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek that evo version looks more better
with four 3.5 inch hdd support
I also love full tower
but graphic card getting longer and bigger and heavier.

@user275517 was there a particular card you wanted?

nope, was looking from the history till now, I notice that graphic card really are getting longer and heavier
but they are also getting more powerful
with features with 4k and higher fps

Bob
...neither of which are GPU features, per se

@Bob pls explain why it is not the GPU features?
most graphic card market them this way

you need a screen that can do 4K

Bob
9:06 AM
Sure. And we know marketing is always truthful

thanks for enlighten me

Bob
Your most basic on-die GPU these days "supports 4k"

oic
by the way, wondering if there are any similar casing but can support six 3.5 inch hdd?

Bob
End of the day, it really depends on which actual games you run

text adventures!

9:14 AM
My new internship assignment:
Make a list of organisations working on
a) Child Safety and the internet
b) Children and online piracy
c) Cyber Security and Children
Collate the name of the concerned person, email, address, telephone, and wait-for-it... *fax*

you seem surprised at fax?
fax is still a huge thing in most UK offices

Not here in India...

i think you may be a little naive there

Hm... maybe
But most websites don't even list a fax number

thats where you have to call the company and speak to someone ;)
"hi i'm calling from such and such inc. do you have a fax number?"
you might even get away with saying it is for a school project

9:20 AM
Hm...
I'll have to do that for the name of the concerned person too

in most companies the MFD probably isn't setup correctly for scanning to email
go the school project route then.
in my experience if people think it is a sales call they aren't likely to give you the information
play to your strength of being young, innocent and fluffy

:D

WTF Britain? Brexit? I'm just hearing about this in the US but after watching both sides argue for hours on YouTube and BBC and third party sites, I'm still a little flabbergasted that people are in favor of this?

sadly, yes
if it helps i am voting to stay in

Brexit? What's that?

9:28 AM
a silly media term
british exit

Britain is a major trading partner for the US... British economy and EU economy affects us a lot... seeing that economy take a nosedive could blow back on us... Trump plus Brexit could basically give us another 2008 deep recession, IMO

agreed

it's bad enough my own countrymen are voting for an absolute imbecile, but to see Britain's populace slated to make a boneheaded move... ughhh

there are genuine concerns that the EU isn't democratic and that some laws/rulings seem to erode sovereignty
annoyingly the real issues get hidden behind lies about immigration

Social media is a disaster. The Internet has created an idiocracy. I regret my support and participation in this software-based enabler of ensuring that the worst, most irrational ideas get support from the stupidest, least informed people
Trump and Brexit seem to thrive on social media. There will be many more such things.

9:33 AM
my view is that we need to be in it to change it
most of my friends are similarly inclined
my parents and sister are voting to leave

@Burgi Hmm. Yeah. If the EU as a trading partner goes downhill or makes it difficult for Britain to trade with them and negatively affects the British economy, not a single British citizen would have any right to complain after they leave the EU.
You can't tell them what to do if you're not a part of them. They're totally free to give you guys the finger if they want to.

to leave or not to leave, that is the question.
wonder if British will leave or stay with EU

Well, FYI, about 150 years ago the US had an identity crisis and some people thought our government couldn't support both the north and the south together... it turns out that, basically, if we had split the US into two entities, it's likely they would have spent more time fighting each other than, say, Hitler and Japan, and probably would've lost WWII.
even people who come from families that traditionally advocated slavery are pretty glad today that the US didn't split up

so, it may be wiser to stay with EU ? for the time being ?
if stay with EU, then what is the point to suggest to leave EU in the first place?

Bob
@user275517 There's this thing called different people having different opinions.

9:42 AM
@user275517 I hope they keep the EU together. The folks who want to leave the EU contend that Britain would be better off leaving, and they have various rational and irrational arguments supporting (or not, as the case may be) their position.
You can read or listen to their arguments by googling "Brexit" or looking it up on youtube.

PREDICTION: As soon as Trump comes to power, he will get hacked by anonymous, and will keep getting hacked for the rest of his term.

It's one thing for me as a third party (and thus not directly affected by this) to form an opinion on something that might only tangentially affect me by making my economy a bit worse, but if I'm going to form an opinion, it'll be after at least considering the viewpoints of both sides.

@user275517 Because, as usual, the relevant politicians are only in it for the votes, and have been spreading lies and misinformation (both sides) about the consequences of being in or out. So what's new.

I agree with the misinformation. They probably are not sure about the consequences that come after the decision.

@Rahul2001 him getting hacked a lot would cause a lot of issues with them trying to censor the internet again. Which then I would probably want to move.

9:45 AM
@user275517 Exactly. Both sides are coming up with meaningless statistics about, for example, what will happen to immigration and unemployment.

!!caat

that a mouse, not cat

@allquixotic You're relying on the common voter being both rational and knowledgeable. Evidence has proved neither is the case.

On the immigration front, neither side has any idea what the real numbers are ...
@qwertyuiop How can they be "knowledgeable" when both sides are making up numbers as they go along?

9:47 AM
@allquixotic I'll drink to that
@Bob Hell, even my basic on-die GPU from 2011 "supports 4K" though at limited refresh rates, and hell if you ever try running a game in that resolution...

it is the illegal immigration that is the issue but the average person confuses the issue

@DavidPostill why no one point out the correct number

@user275517 Because nobody knows what they are.

Dang, since when did business class lounges become more crowded than even the general departures area -_-

@user275517 it is impossible to count the number of illegal immigrants

9:50 AM
@Burgi Not if you actually count them coming in and kick them back out again. Unfortunately that doesn't happen (for reasons)

Indeed, even the official "counts" of legal immigrants and the UK's own citizens are estimates

the vote is June 23?

yeah

well, good luck, guys... I hope it turns out for the best but I'm worried.

technically even if we vote to leave we may not leave

9:51 AM
I'm worried too, but mainly about the stupidity of the general public

Like the government selling the patrol boats that were meant to catch illegal immigrants crossing the channel. Now they are trying to buy them back. Too late of course ....

And having voted "No" to Scottish independence, having to vote "Yes" following a Brexit presents a bit of a dichotomy.

i think i have contaminated my tea
with the evil coffee

Border control in Finland took me a whole 15 seconds. Thanks to the EU.

@qwertyuiop "Yes" to Brexit means to exit the EU?

9:53 AM
if we vote to leave, scotland will leave the UK

@allquixotic Yep

yes

@Burgi Yep

Even the politicians from each particular party can't agree on in/out. How are the unwashed masses supposed to make up their minds?

Even though we'd rather not do either, given the choice of leaving the EU or the UK... well. Sorry England.

9:54 AM
@qwertyuiop oh, you're from Scotland?

agreed

Right, so there's britain, and UK and EU and England... What's the difference again?

And while getting back into the EU is neither guaranteed nor going to be fast, I suspect the general opinion of most Scots is they prefer ... pretty much anyone to Englishmen.
@Rahul2001 Britain is an island.
EU => UK => Britain

england=britain?

Britain is the big island that is part of the UK.
That contains England, Scotland, and Wales.

9:56 AM
England, Wales and Scotland forms Britain.

I'll just let the guy from there answer

England, Wales, Scotland and N Ireland forms UK.

oh, ok, thanks

Bob
Add Ireland and you get the British Isles

9:57 AM
England, Wales, Scotland, N Ireland and Repub of Ireland forms British Isles.

Nah, the guy from there just likes to overcomplicate things just to taunt people

Europe=>EU=>UK=>Britain=>England

england is interchangable with the UK. churchill signed the league of nations charter as the Prime minister of england

@Rahul2001 yeah but one country from Asia is in EU.

@qwertyuiop Well, that's not at all confusing.

9:58 AM
Because British Isles != British Islands.

And not all European countries are in EU.

@jokerdino ?

@Rahul2001 Cyprus.

o.o

cyprus is in europe

9:58 AM
Cyprus is hardly "From Asia"

its in the med

So, Syria is in Europe now?

i'd accept an arguement for africa but not asia

@jokerdino Syria is middle east
