A: Does TRIMming too often reduce the lifespan of a SSD?

bwDracoNo TRIM is a hint to the drive that the specified blocks are no longer in use and are safe to erase. The drive is not required to erase those blocks immediately and in fact is allowed to ignore the hint altogether. Hence, sending lots of TRIM commands should not reduce the life of any SSD that h...

It's important to realize that SSDs are not required to immediately respond to a TRIM command, and are technically free to ignore the command altogether.

Your answer is pretty similar to one that's already there.

Bob
@MichaelFrank Is this you? :P

Answer deleted.

@Bob Ha. Nope. But I did see the Queen St (Main Road in the Auckland CBD) branch advertising their fixtures on their digital storefront signage.
Must have been out of stock of actual product. :P

Bob
1:07 AM
@MichaelFrank Heh. I might drop by the George St (ditto main road :P) branch around lunch. See if they have any decently cheap phones.
I need one to use that data sim on :\

@DavidPostill dry newspapers work better.

I haven't even bothered to go in anywhere since the official closure announcement was made.

My parents have taken to turning the lights off and on to get my attention when I have headphones on ;p
which works oddly well, but I'm pondering just sticking a doorbell on my desk

Bob
Hm.
Tegra K1 in a Xiaomi tablet for 140 USD. Nice.

Any Windows people in right now?

roar

user139252
I (for some reason I've now forgotten) booted into my Windows installation, and I'm trying to clean it up by uninstalling things

user139252
Do I need all of these Visual Studio C++ installations?

@TheBrownOne Are they redistributables?

user139252
Also, if I have on-board graphics/audio and have the corresponding Intel/Realtek drivers, do I need these nVidia drivers?

user139252
2:10 AM
@MichaelFrank Yes

Do you have a lot of games?

user139252
Nope.

user139252
I have 0 games.

user139252
I had a few games, at one point.

Hmm.. If you uninstall them, the software that needs them will/may stop working.

2:10 AM
I wouldn't touch the redistributables. Let them stand.

user139252
I've got 10 of them D=

From memory they are there because that's the version of VS that the software was built with...

2:12 AM
This is why I dislike Windows :P

user139252
Alright, I'll leave them be.

user139252
Try to remember why I booted in here in the first place...

I'm sure you have many *lib files under whatever other OS you use. ;)

user139252
Those clean up when I get rid of the apps that need them :P

user139252
I see a TON of duplicate DLL files, mainly relating to Dell drivers...

user139252
Is it safe to delete to any of these?

well it wont kill you
this is why I hate installing 3rd party apps
and software in general
microsoft need to do something
cus nobody else is
doesnt ccleaner make backups

Bob
2:50 AM
@TheBrownOne The redists should also be cleaned up automatically when the package that depends on them is properly uninstalled.
@TheBrownOne Protip: unless you have a specific reason to remove something, the answer is always "no".
Visual C++ redists are the equivalent of, say, the glibc shared library.
Except that Windows actually does concurrent versions properly so it won't break if you have different programs depending on specific versions...
Linux 'solves' that by having everything in the repo standard package source depend on the same shared library version.
But god help you if you ever need to install binaries from third-parties.
(Of course, compiling from source is much more common under Linux and would also work. Arguably that's the better way when you don't depend on closed-source software.)

3:23 AM
@TheBrownOne my rule of thumb is if you need to ask, leave it the hell alone.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hell, I don't like CCleaner in general.
There's no tangible benefit to running it. And the risk of breaking your system is pretty high.
Sure, you can talk about "less bloat", but at the end of the day some DLL that isn't running won't hurt anything as long as you have the disk space.

yup
@Bob if I wanted less bloat, I'd just do a fresh install ;)

Bob
Sometimes, it makes sense to clear out some specific cause of slowdowns. And sometimes some very specific parts of registry cleaners work (those that clear out broken links that are often enumerated, wasting time).
Problem is, most said registry cleaners are crapware that take a giant hammer to what is a pretty delicate database.
It's like carpet bombing a city cause you don't like the shape of a specific house.

@Bob so... kinda like the Empire? ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek THE MONUMENTS MUST BE REMOVED AT ALL COSTS

literally giant in some cases...

3:38 AM
they should have had the shogun executioner as a super weapon ;p
anyway
@TheBrownOne I strongly recommend against deleting 'duplicate' dlls
windows has a pretty complex (and functional) way of dealing with different versions of libraries, and the performance boost is minimal

@JourneymanGeek Just bend an old wire coat hanger! :)

Clearly your problem definition is bad
@MichaelFrank might damage the headband and make it flake

wrap it in tennis tape.

wireless headphones are cool cus no stupid wires

looks like something I'd be able to jerryrig off of stuff I pick up off of ikea or daiso

Fisher sells spares.

That's cool.

4:09 AM
fischeraudio.com/shop/fa-003ti-parts I mean, quite literally everything.

Huh... those seem more like accessories?

@MichaelFrank My headband's the part that broke
also, other than the 'original' cups, that's most of the parts of a FA003
obviously, more expensive to assemble it from parts but in my case all I really need is the headband and the ear cushions
Not quite buyer's remorse, but I might fix up the old one next month ;p

4:28 AM
But the wooden cups are surely not part of the original product?
Wow... So I came across a reason to use a script I wrote again. :O

@MichaelFrank no, the 'titanium drivers' are the stock ones. Wooden cups are an option some people like
Kinda wierd that they sell em with drivers tho
I thought they just sold the cups

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Daiso => banana stand? :P

4:48 AM
@Bob still looking out for those

gimme that script

Also hello timezone change
@JourneymanGeek You may upgradings my broadbandings!

I will do the needful and give you the most special 1200 bps broadband dialup over pidgeon plan good sir.

@Bob Flightradar said even before I boarded it was going to be 4 hours delayed. But it wasn't.

May you have most joyous sojorns on the tubes of the internet sir!

As it turns out everything at Heathrow was delayed on the way out cause they ran out of pushback trucks
@jokerdino Yeah that's the one. Quite a weird, circuitous route as it turns out
That's interesting, spent four hours gradually climbing and losing speed
And that bit at the end... they had to hit the speedbrakes pretty hard several times. I have a video!
Oh wait, that was just a 3 hour gap in the readings
Because flightradar didn't know where we were for 3 hours o_0

That went well
took out the crusty old metal forks from the old headphones
I'll order the replacement bits next month
looks like these darned things are pretty much designed to be torn down and fixed tho

Bob
6:55 AM
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface Oh, did you see the new S7 update? :P
I'm still confused over the lack of absolute volume and the BT battery level display :\

@Bob No. There's another one?
Well I guess the April security update was due
Urgh, fuck off Skype, it's even worse than Clippy.

Q: What's the baseball bat for? (seen in CRS-8 berthing NASA TV broadcast)

uhohWatching the CRS-8 Berthing live broadcast on NASA TV I noticed a baseball bat resting on top of a console in the front left part of the room, so I took some screenshots. Looking closer, it seems to be about a meter or two away from a large, delicate-looking model of the International Space Stat...

@JourneymanGeek It's not a baseball bat, it's a LART

Bob
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface Yea, apparently another big palm detection update for us Edge users :P

@Caterina'Catty'McCatface That's the technical term, yes

Bob
7:03 AM
Only some countries so far, though.

@Bob Nice
Wonder if it helps at all for non-edge users
Now that Jokerdino mentioned it, I do have some really long flights...
Prior to the last year the longest haul flights I've been on were 6 hours to the US or 8-9 hours to Beijing

furthest I've flown is 12
Amusingly enough, to the UK

Now I've had 12 hour flights to/from Singapore and Hong Kong, and a 13.5 hour flight from Koala Lumpers.
It goes by fairly quick if you sleep through it though
Man, two gigantic planes just pulled up beside me in the last half hour and I failed to notice either of them.
The sound insulation in this airport must be seriously good.

Both Boeing 777's.
Also, the Israeli one has a weird hat.
If anyone wants to track/cyberstalk my next flight it's flightradar24.com/data/aircraft/b-kpf

7:22 AM
@JourneymanGeek got him

Of all the things one can spam
Braces

@Caterina'Catty'McCatface they skip Ukraine. It's a no fly zone.

Bob
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface Apparently focus is on single-handed use so if you don't have trouble with that then it probably makes no difference.
There's a dirty joke hidden somewhere in there.

Don't you use your phone one handed?

@jokerdino Yeah I noticed that on my Singapore flight. But this one seemed to go over Mongolia and then make a 90 degree turn, which is a bit more extreme.
@Bob hmm. I have more trouble with two handed use than single handed.
Mainly because my hands are too small for single handed use anyway.

7:28 AM
I tend to have smaller phones

Bob
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface interesting. My biggest problem is that if it's anything but horizontal, or if I'm reaching across the screen, I tend to put my palm against that damn edge

Also, I've got pretty big hands

Huh. Apparently they want all cellphones switched off before boarding this Chinese plane.

Bob
ha. told ya :P
you can use a laptop in flight mode with wifi disabled though

Bleh. But your link said "by 2016"!

7:29 AM
not airplane mode?

But all my music is on my phone not my craptop

@Caterina'Catty'McCatface more or less.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek nah, not by Chinese regs
@Caterina'Catty'McCatface heh, that was a year ago and largely speculation

Ironically the airplane mode switch on my laptop doesn't work.

Yeah, some of them don't want you to meddle with phones or other electronics.

Bob
7:30 AM
my link was more to point out that China still had those regs after europe and the usa relaxed them

Probably they have experience with faulty electronics.

Weird. They changed my seat at the boarding gate.

Bob
@jokerdino that doesn't make sense. if a plane were that easy to interfere with don't you think someone would've brought a powerful wide-band jammer aboard?

Still can't figure why your plane didnt fly over Kazakh.

Bob
I'm probably on a list now.

7:32 AM
there's a post on this on aviation.se

@Bob lol
@Bob Die Hard 2?
They don't want journos to sneak in.

Q: Why aren't cell phones allowed to be used in aircraft?

flyingfischWhat problems do cell phones cause? How is using a cell phone in the air different than using it from the ground?

A: Why aren't cell phones allowed to be used in aircraft?

usernumberI am a private pilot, and sometimes, the cellphones cause interference with the radio. Most of the time, cellphones are not a problem, but once in a while, I have to turn mine off because it is causing parasitic noises on the radio. I don't know how bad it would actually be in a passenger aircr...

this one's curious

@JourneymanGeek this is the one I have heard the most.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Private pilot in a small plane is quite different.

@Bob comms issues makes more sense than the whole plane catastrophically crashing tho

Bob
7:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek Still. The plane itself forms a nice faraday cage around the passenger compartment.

8:32 AM
@JourneymanGeek Please take look at superuser.com/questions/1065152/…. OP is getting angry when told his question is off-topic.

I wonder if Windows can be tricked into thinking a logon is local when its actually remote, by spoofing somebodys mac and ip address, user name and SID, hostname, etc
probably illigal unless you say do it in your own setup
actually doing that to the ip will probably shun any network connection anyway

@CMDEmu nope

the ip may not matter
why windows check it when its only designed to logon locally in this case
why would*

11:24 AM
computer analogy, what your computer should be able to do all at once, and how that really turns out most of the time :-)
montereyukeclub.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/… What most people end up really doing with one.

11:42 AM
@Bob well turns out no such restriction on my plane.
Cod use electronics throughout the flight. Just some weird outdated notice at the boarding gate, or perhaps that only applies to mainland China flights.
@Bob lol not as bad as my list!
As it turns out that last minute change of seat at the boarding gate was them giving me a free upgrade to business class.

11:58 AM
@Bob Heh, touching my phone while it was connected to the charger on my first flight caused the in flight entertainment system to give out a deafening buzzing noise
At first I thought it was my accidentally left on WiFi hotspot, but no, it was the in-seat power itself.

@Caterina'Catty'McCatface there is no list. That said, you're clearly on the list that dosen't exist.

Note to all users: Never trust JMG when he talks about non-existent lists.

@Cat, you are not in any list that we can tell you about.

yaaaaaaaaaawn
wife's nose finally fixed \o/ and they released her

nose? wouldnt that be more like \oo/ or did they cut half of it off :-)

@DavidPostill morning / evening / good day to you.

@GuitarShoeDave morn/eve/day to you too.

Just getting into work :) Had a SAN failure last night, still recuperating from lack of sleep.

Client: "Here is a CSR which our contractor XYZ generated for us. Please use it to purchase a cert for us." Me: "Sure thing, but that CSR uses SHA1. I can't use that" Contractor XYZ: "Terribly sorry, please use this SHA1 CSR instead."
Getting this cert generated so much work, you could buy your own CA with the money spent

And I thought it was bad here with 90% of the nation's ISPs threathening promising to fuck us benefit us with data caps that will prevent any decent internet use improve experience for everyone by the end of the year (doubletalk is dupliplusgood)
But really, @jokerdino? Your ISP blocks random sites at will? Or just the useful ones?

no one has any clue why they block what and why

Is your ISP friends with the UK and China?

1:47 PM
no, at least those countries are competent in blocking

we are?
I'm doubtful about that

Q: Why is Superuser.com blocked?

SloppyJoeThe page loads for 20 seconds and says :- This website has been banned by the Department of Telecom, India

Wait
SU is blocked in my country ?
treachery I sayeth

i thought it would say due to the incompetent authority , if it was really a country wide block.

@Psycogeek Indian ISPs seem to have a habit of blocking things they are not told to block and not blocking things they are told to block ...

2:01 PM
They should block SO.

whatever saves you bandwidth

(then we can sit back and watch the lynch mobs ;) )

hello

so i thought i had seen every sort of bad website possible in 2016
then i came across the realtek corporate website

@Burgi You clearly haven't seen theworldsworstwebsiteever.com yet ;)

with the confidence inspiring quote of "Best viewed at 800x600 with IE 6.0 or Netscape 7.02 or Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6 or higher. " in the footer

Speaking of bad websites
I have one

©2016 Realtek Semiconductor Corp
Wow

@ThatBrazilianGuy my point exactly
@DavidPostill that website loads in a reasonable amount of time

those are deliberately designned to be bad
realtek are a huge multi-national electronics company who really should know better

2:15 PM
!!hr

@DavidPostill mine is BSNL, a government ISP. Airtel is private.

sadly realtek's employment page is in chinese

Private ISPs deploy gov blocks faster than gov ones.

@DavidPostill was hoping to see a <blink> tag in there somewhere.
@DavidPostill: was also expecting to see microsoft frontpage within meta tags in the source.

i managed to catch the flu last week
i had to go into my old job last wednesday to sign paperwork and collect my stuff. EVERYONE in the office was coughing and sneezing
so i think i caught it from them
jerks fire me and give me flu!

ooh
Made it to the second round

@JourneymanGeek the google job?

@Burgi naw, web services wing of a company named after a south american river

seems like nature designed it so carriers of viruses would seem like something a person would want to avoid. They grouchy make loud sneezing and wheezing noises and have bloodhsot demon eyes. Luckily the medical establishment has ways to hide most of those symptoms so it can spread.

ah my cousin used to work for them

2:24 PM
ahh
how are they like?

he hated it

This is a data center tech job, so shift + on call, which I don't min. Hopefully pay's decent.

said they were narrow minded, unreasonable and not open to change (weirdly)
he was the european director of logistics

ahh
I'm somewhere lower on the totem pole ;)

nods
i suspect at his level you run into the bezo ego a lot more often

2:28 PM
So the new chrome build 50 material design interface is pretty
have to enable it in chrome://flags though

i think the final straw for him was they made everyone stay on christmas eve until 10pm to pack boxes
he then had a 200 mile drive home

meh
@DavidPostill from your link: dsrny.com "i know this, its a unix system"

WASP!!!!!
SOMEONE KILL IT!!!!

WHAT DID THAT WASP EVER DO TO YOU?
SHE PROBABLY HAS A FAMILY AND 8000 KIDS!

heh

actually . . . wasps have killed more people in american than bears and alligators combined (wasps and bees)

2:56 PM
i think that was the first ever time that a wasp has flown in my window and managed to exit the same window on the first try

@JourneymanGeek His link has nothing to do with the questions though - some sort of wireless data transfer crap

yeaaaah
meh. Handled.

@Psycogeek guns have killed more people in america than bears, alligators, wasps, and bees combined.

Did DHS think this no-fly-list thing through? lets see, people who hate the country and the politicians and have made various death threats about them are now forced to stay in the country :-)

@Burgi she's probably telling her whole family you're good people

2:58 PM
malaria has killed more people than anything else ever

@Psycogeek That's because bears and alligators probably don't speak american.
