morning.
/me was a good dog and tested his backups.

I'm in class right now, so may not be available for a few hours.

@Ramhound: Honestly? comment less, answer more. Some of your 'grumpier' seeming comments would work better as a well fleshed out answer.

I don't do "hey this might be your answer" answers...

True, but "No this is silly" answers would do better fleshed out

1:32 AM
can someone post something on meta.superuser.com for me? I was mistreated by some moderator and my account was suspended.
They stated that I asked many questions.
They said that my asking questions was to ask for a tutor.
They said that most of my questions are low quality

Besides answers, questions can also benefit many people when they have the same or similar questions in future. Asking questions is also another kind of contribution to the site. Not many people have time to write their questions and just skip their problems.

The Q and A website is for computer users and learners at all levels.

Everyone here is a computer system enthusiast.

@Tim: Could always wait for the suspension to end
And in some cases quality does matter - you have a ton of fairly theoretical questions closed by the community recently, The main site isn't really a good place for "Explain this thing I read on wikipedia"
2
I'd also add, while the suspension was by mod, the closures were by users, so really it was the community that considers the questions low quality
(Also, I'd point out the difference between high rep users and mods proper, but as a 50K user on math, you should know that)
And that's to say, I'd rather deal with it here, than have someone post on your behalf, especially where in a sense, that circumvents the whole 'cooling off' part of the suspension

@HackToHell Wondering if that works internationally.

Bob
@TomWijsman Currently US only. Planning for international.

blah, having some mac wierdness at work. Apparently user moved some files and they have .tmp extensions suffixed to the end

3:36 AM
@Tim Trying to infer the "why" that someone did something on SuperUser is often a fool's errand. If the questions were low quality, but had been humored because some people thought they had a good premise, they could still have been closed for low quality. Too bad that nobody went through them and edited them to improve the quality....

3:51 AM
@Tim Just looking at a few of your questions, a number are of legitimately low quality. At the very least, they show a significant shortage of research.
81
Q: ps aux output meaning

TimWhen typing ps aux, what does each column of the output mean? For example $ ps aux timothy 29217 0.0 0.0 11916 4560 pts/21 S+ 08:15 0:00 pine root 29505 0.0 0.0 38196 2728 ? Ss Mar07 0:00 sshd: can [priv] can 29529 0.0 0.0 38332 1904 ? S Mar07 ...

hmm. I think I'm going back to having a dedicated 'scratch' drive.

The title is not a question. One demerit. The body is one line and a block of code/output. No indications of research. Second demerit.
"Thanks and regards!" Demerit three.

Q: How many cores I am using on a Linux Server?

TimI am just wondering how I can find out in bash how many CPU cores a user is now using on a Linux Server? I am submitting a fair amount of background jobs to the server, so I'd like to write a bash script to check before I submit a job if the running jobs (processes) submitted by me are too many,...

heh. @killermist no need to maul him that badly.

Unclear what is actually being asked. One demerit.
"Thanks and regards!" Second demerit. End commentary on this question.
@JourneymanGeek I'm just trying to explain why the questions are (rightfully) being treated as low quality.

won't be surprised if I gave up editing his posts at some point of time after he didn't pay attention to what was changed

4:01 AM
@killermist: I appreciate the sentiment.

I've tried flagging things as "low quality" before, and it continuously backfired. I got rejected and refused retorts to flags because some excessively energetic person was willing to exert the misguided effort of salvaging the post.
I won't be burned ever again using the "low quality" flag. I'll just downvote and move on.

XD. Everyone does that sometimes

That flag is dead to me. I don't even ever consider it anymore.

(I tend to consider those mainly for answers. eg "ME TOO" or... incoherent stuff)

@JourneymanGeek A low quality question is a low quality question. Just because it can be salvaged doesn't mean it should be.

4:05 AM
@killermist Depends on how its low quality.
As a user I tended to hit lack of research type questions with downvotes, or close votes
(But I hit close-vote level rep pretty early)

Bob
@killermist "low quality" is normally for completely unintelligible posts

If someone sounds like he's posted high on illicit substances, and has numerous references to lizard people...

Bob
It's "this is so bad there's literally no way anyone could every make sense of it. delete it."

And if I raise them, and they get declined or refused, as has happened in the past, the flag quickly becomes persona non grata.
The "low quality" flag is dead to me. It doesn't really exist.
Just because some person has too much time and not enough common sense does not un-non-salvageable a question.

@killermist: unsalvagable is really subjective tho

4:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek OK, so a high quantity of salvage attempters makes the "low quality" flag even less salvageable.
The flag is dead to me. It shouldn't be. But it is. Too bad really.
I don't have the energy to remedy every bit of junk that occurs. Neither does everybody (combined) else. Just because something [could] be repaired doesn't mean that it [should] be.
"You asked junk. Try again." should not be disregarded as an anti-crap measure.
But we have too many "heroes".
"I can save it!" ... But, you shouldn't. [sigh]

Man, you sound like the SF crowd

SourceForge?
I'm just a user that gets more and more disenchanted every day.

serverfault

Not sure whether I've contributed there or not.

(bunch of regulars felt the same, they sort of have a love-hate relationship with the site now, and moved off to a slack chatroom)

4:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek If by love-hate, you mean "love the concept, hate the result", I'm sure getting there.

Pretty much. Quality control is a balance tho. On one hand, you don't want to be swamped by crap. On the other hand, you don't want to be too elitist
2

I think that there's insufficient dictatorial control. The attempt to humor democracy, which is worthy, leads to some serious junk doing iceberg damage to communities.

Dictatorial control isn't really the way we do things.

That thing is a self-sustaining thing that will never really change.

I wouldn't say the laptop is overpriced. There's two GTX 980M GPUs in SLI on this laptop, about $1,100 in GPUs alone. You're talking about 3072 CUDA cores in 24 SMMs. That is an enormous amount of GPU power. $3000-$3500 is about right for a system of this caliber (extreme gaming-class laptop). — DragonLord 18 mins ago

@JourneymanGeek Server Fault is downhill from what I can tell
Big shift away from the professional focus, lower quality content
Super User is a bit better but we're still getting lots of bad questions.

Tim
@killermist Your way of picking my old posts shows your lack of understanding and self-centerness.
I have stopped using Thanks and regards for quite a while. Sometimes Thanks to show show my appreciation, even though I know it is not well received by some. I have my reason to do so
I read some of your posts. It is too long and dificult to undrestand what you are trying to say. Time is precious, why not cut your long post short to let others understand better?
although it seems like I am criticizing you, I don't want to. I have my limitations, and I am not beter than you, just like you aren't than me.
I won't try to write long just for the sake of showing so called "research"
If I write long, that is because it can clarify my questions beter.
If I write short, it is because being concise makes my questions clearer.
If you keep picking, you can always find this and that to throw at me.
But it only shows how superficial and narrow minded you are.
Just like those haters at superuser.com

I didn't know helium hard drives were this expensive
HGST Ultrastar He8, 8TB in seven platters

Its super exotic tech and still uncommon. Hell can't even find the Seagate smr drives yet

@OliverSalzburg @allquixotic But wait, there's more! ...Outlook resamples pictures not just to 96 DPI, but based on the screen scaling.
So of course our test user had 125% scaling set...

8:41 AM
Wow
Also, wow:
@Oliver Salzburg, one thing to keep in mind is that Windows 7 was designed for spinning rust, not SSDs, and 1-4GB of RAM, not 12. It's not gospel, it should be obvious that there are times when one-size-fits-all defaults don't apply, and the solution isn't to keep advocating to don't think about it and never touch those defaults no matter what when someone wants to more deeply understand an issue. That's fine for noobs, but not for everyone. — SilverbackNet 2 hours ago
A Windows 7 machine with 12 GB of RAM? Well, I'll be...

8:58 AM
blah, anyone knows where I can find a centos 6 livedvd?

Bob
Or does it have to be 6.0?

preferably

Bob
:S
@JourneymanGeek Not 6.6?

I'll see. We need to run some raid config utils
oh 6.6 is fine

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Then, well, they're available on the centos downloads page :P

9:01 AM
I'm downloading DVD 1
I must be blind

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I wouldn't even bother with moving the page file off the SSD.
Unless you have some insane memory pressure...

@Bob Neither would I

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ...and more! it also resizes to fit some arbitrary max width I can't find
seriously, fuck this bullshit

The older I get the less need I feel to tweak these aspects of a system
I set a desktop background and I'm good to go!

Bob
lol
I don't even do that much.

9:05 AM
@OliverSalzburg: I have 16...

Bob
My most recent Windows device? Installed Firefox, synced with my local server, chucked Dropbox and KeePass on there... annnnnd done

@JourneymanGeek Desktops? O__O
@Bob My KeePass is in my Dropbox ;)
Well, Google Drive, but whatever

@OliverSalzburg: work and home? ;p

@JourneymanGeek What do you mean?

Oh ram, desktops? ;p
... was I scrolled up?

Bob
9:18 AM
@OliverSalzburg I meant the program and keyfile :P
@JourneymanGeek ...probably

@Bob Yeah, I keep both in there. Portable edition

Bob
@OliverSalzburg ...keyfile should be local only

@Bob I use a composite of key+passphrase
Which, I guess, is somewhat pointless. It just felt extra-secure when I set it up originally ;P

Bob
Ya, but still
pw db goes on server, keyfile goes on local

But then I can't open the db if I don't have a copy of the file at hand
Security is often so very inconvenient ;P

Bob
9:22 AM
@OliverSalzburg That's the point :P
cmon outlook why must you do this to me :( :( :(

So, a forum I was on ages ago had to reset all user passwords. I wonder how that happened…
user image

Bob
@OliverSalzburg well, at least they're not plain-text?
I wonder if they were using MD5

Let's see what kind of mail I get, I just reset my password and they'll be emailing me my new one shortly
But this forum account is so ancient, the email account I used is only retrieved by fetchmail every 15 minutes or something

Bob
@OliverSalzburg I was implementing a password reset recently. 128 bytes of cryptographically secure random data in a password reset link.

I usually go with function resetPassword(user) { new Email(user.email, "Your password was reset").send(); user.password = ""; }

Bob
9:29 AM
o.O

I'm kidding! Jeeze! :D
I'm actually currently moving our application stack from our proprietary authentication mechanism to one based on OAuth2. I shouldn't be joking about shitty security :P

10:02 AM
Gah, so close to getting WEB-15000 O__O youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/WEB-14999

10:26 AM
Jesus, now I've rest the password and can't log in anymore. New password was probably too long. Once more... :P

Bob
ahem
ok, calmed down a bit

Bob
Apparently text wrapping -_-
But it still doesn't fucking work
96 DPI, JPG format (eww... should be PNG but at this point w/e), top-and-bottom text wrapping
this is fucking black magic to embed a fucking image
@OliverSalzburg File one more, quick! :P

11:27 AM
Woof. One of those days
Our shiny new 20 core workstations don't play well with out automatic setup system

Bob
12:13 PM
@JourneymanGeek Heh. I wonder if @allquixotic plans to get any peripherals :P

12:36 PM
:p

1:34 PM
I'm playing with storage spaces
(or more precisely, an odd layout of it - a physical disk with a VHD as a backup)
maybe not

1:57 PM
@Bob: the very idea of bespoke peripherals? what an age we live in ;p

2:33 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Did you contact me on LinkedIn?
Someone from Brazil, who I don't remember knowing, contacted me

2:49 PM
Heh, funny stuff. Our internet connection just went down. So I went downstairs to check on our cable modem and was quite surprised that our neighbor was talking to a cable company dude at the door
So, naturally, I asked him if he just fucked with our hookup
Which he didn't and the connection was up a few minutes later
But it's gotta suck real hard if you try to sell your internet service to someone and right at that moment their service goes down :P

3:06 PM
@Bob honestly, I'm on a budget for getting something like a flight stick for Star Citizen. I'm going to wait at least until it's well into beta and the optimization and stuff has started, then I'm going to see what other people are using, and look for good value and lowish price
no way in fuck I'm spending $500... my budget might reach $150. MAYBE.
and I'm not using pedals lol

@OliverSalzburg Sent a contact request? Unlikely, but not impossible. Sent a message? No.

3:32 PM
I consider LinkedIn somewhat frustrating. You can't see someone's info unless you are already on linkedin, and you can only see their full profile after you add them. But I suppose imployers only get intereted on someone when they see their info.

4:04 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Maybe you can see the stuff right away if you get a Premium account
btw, I realized we're already connected ;D

XD
!! s/imployers/employers/

> Windows Explorer (Graphical Shell), Server Manager, Windows PowerShell, IIS, ASP .NET, Hyper-V, etc, are all dependent on .NET Framework.
O_O
TIL Explorer has a dependency on .NET
Anyone happen to have access to a Win8 VM right now?

@Bob VM? no...
Why?

Bob
@CanadianLuke I want to know if removing .NET on Win8 is possible.

I have it sitting on a disk image though, and I have some Surface tablets kicking around here

Bob
It's evidently not on Server2012, not without removing Explorer.

Uh, why?

Bob

> Windows Explorer (Graphical Shell), Server Manager, Windows PowerShell, IIS, ASP .NET, Hyper-V, etc, are all dependent on .NET Framework.
I don't have access to a Win8 VM right now.
A snapshot is pretty much necessary unless you don't care about destroying the OS :P

10:41 PM
;p
@Bob: kinda tempted to try. I have tested backups ;p

@Bob, again, why? Why do you want a bare-bones Windows 8 installation, just for the kernel?

@CanadianLuke: or to run some small/trivial non .net app

... Other than console based apps, can you run non .Net applications on Windows 8?

sure.
There are still a ton of things written in C, VB... etc

Bob
@CanadianLuke Call it curiosity?
I want to know if Explorer is actually dependent on .NET.
And, with it, if it's safe to assume .NET cannot be uninstalled and must always exist on Win8.

10:52 PM
Hmmm. Interesting. So, not an "in-production" type thing, just an experiment

Bob
@CanadianLuke If I wanted one myself, I'd test it myself.
Point is, I don't actually need the installation. I just want to know the test results.
(Which I could still do myself, but if someone here has a Win8 VM handy that saves me quite a bit of bother, and wouldn't be too hard for them either.)

@Bob: I don't. I tend to grab one off modern.ie, experiment and discard.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You and your FTTB -_-

@Bob: Oh, I keep a local cache of VMs too
(I'm not at my desk at the moment, and my VM box is off)

@JourneymanGeek Cool site for Microsoft. But do they allow us to be Admins? I'm connecting for the first time right now

11:01 PM
@CanadianLuke: hmm. Can't remember
but that's trivial to circumvent

It just launches IE11, and blocks out access to the hard drive... And Task Manager...

Q: What's the default login for the WinXP IE6 VPC image supplied by Micosoft?

bduncanjPosting this question to answer myself. I downloaded the MS supplied VirtualPC image for Windows XP / IE6 testing from http://modern.ie and tried to login using the documented credentials of IEUser / Passw0rd! (referenced in the MS supplied release notes): https://modernievirt.blob.core.windows...

11:39 PM
@Bob .... I did the Remote App method lol.

superuser.com/a/871342/98855 <--- sort of funny, when the question is how to determine the "skill" of the user when assisting them with a problem. I knew how to copy paste, i just did not know What The Heck your even saying :-)
Meaning it would probably be easier to understand the skills of the user if there are not language barriers to begin with.

Apparently, ca.ratemyteachers.com/kelly-road-secondary/34504-s is blocked from my school district...
As "Custom application/block"

ca.ratemyteachers.com/rk-bennett/158796-t does the site seem to have trouble with math?
