4:00 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Here in the US, the advertising of alcoholic beverages has not really been an issue as the industry is self-regulating here. "Please drink responsibly" or a variant thereof is included in the vast majority of such ads.

@Bob the recovery disk just failed to boot
0xc0000225

Bob
@Rahul2001 That's... new...
Did you select the recovery disk in your firmware options?
And/or boot menu?

@Bob yep

Bob
What does it come up as?

hp v210w USB

Bob
4:04 PM
photo of all boot options?
go into firmware setup and look at available boot options

I think I'll just force shut down with the power button and try again
@Bob one sec

Bob
usually there'd be a "UEFI:" or "EFI:" prefix

Boot Mode: UEFI
USB Boot: Enabled
PXE Boot to LAN: Enabled (IDK why)

Bob
PXE boot is often enabled by default but doesn't really matter

Boot Priority Order: Win Boot Managed followed by USB HDD and all kinds of obsolete stuff

Bob
4:06 PM
@Rahul2001 Chuck the USB one first.

@bwDraco Same here

Bob
Wait. What's the "obsolete stuff"? Photo?

Wait, what? No HDD Detected?
@Bob uh... okay

Bob
brb while I try to dig up an empty drive...

The drive might be dead
But I wouldn't expect that to affect other boot media

4:08 PM
@BenN Hope it isn't
This is a pretty new PC... about 1.5 years

@Rahul2001 you have backups right?

@Burgi YES!

Yay!

Thanks to you guys :)

rip the drive out of the laptop, shove it in a caddy and see if another PC can read it

4:09 PM
@Burgi not possible right now

only way to check it isn't hardware failure

Bob
@Rahul2001 Did you have the drive plugged in when you booted for that photo?
Because a flash drive and a "USB HDD" are often different :\

@Bob The usb drive? yeah

Bob
@Rahul2001 Try sticking the USB HDD as #1
If that still doesn't work, do the same with USB FDD

4:15 PM
Okay

Bob
If that doesn't work, try recreating the recovery drive. just in case. maybe on a different flash drive if you have one handy.

@Bob no, I just realized i didn't

Bob
@Rahul2001 ...first thing's first, plug it in, reboot, take a new photo of the boot options :P

Okay, recovery just booted

Bob
don't worry about the security options; they aren't significant here
@Rahul2001 can I facepalm? :P

4:16 PM
@Bob No, it definitely wasn't working before

Bob
Anyway. Try the automatic startup repair.

You could try resetting the BIOS ... that worked when I had a failing hard drive with "No HDD Detected". It recognised the drive and booted. Then I could SMART test.

@Bob This might've done the trick
@Bob Okay, I choose Command Prompt?

Bob
@Rahul2001 ...choose automatic repair.
or startup repair.
or whatever it's called these days.

oh

Bob
4:17 PM
@DavidPostill The "No HDD detected" thing is on the security screen, which to me implies that it's about looking for secure boot keys... I think.

@Bob Ah. OK

Bob
@DavidPostill Also, on a UEFI system, a reset is actually risky - you'll lose the Windows startup entry/efivars, so that'll have to be recreated :\

WHAT? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Bob
not sure though, never actually done that

Went back to that stupid screen

Bob
4:18 PM
?

IDK how

@Bob My lappy is Windows 7 and no UEFI AFAIK

Bob
what screen
and what was the very last thing you saw before that

@Bob The one I was getting in the beginning

Bob
@DavidPostill yea, I'm not entirely sure how the auto-scan works with bootmgr
most of my uefi-fiddling experience has been with linux (efistub)
@Rahul2001 ...which is?

4:22 PM
@Bob
I get that when I start the PC

Bob
@Rahul2001 ...and if you select #2?

@Bob loop
back at that screen

Bob
:\
maybe go with @DavidPostill's suggestion, reset it, and worry about recreating boot entries later?

Boots if I shut the PC down forcefully, and the USB is plugged in when I switch it on

Bob
@Rahul2001 What do you see after it boots?

4:26 PM
Okay, I see something new now
@Bob

Bob
...
I think you're booting from the main drive, not the flash drive...

Nope, that was the flash drive

Bob
Then recreate it.

JUst unplugged and got to the old screen
Typical of Microsoft, telling me that the recovery disk needs to be recovered...

Bob
@Rahul2001 ...typical user, blaming microsoft for something out of their control
if your recovery disk is corrupt, then it needs to be fixed

4:34 PM
@Bob lol
@Bob I have a copy of MSDaRT lying around... Should I boot into that?

Bob
dunno, never used it
you could try booting into the recovery disk on a different computer just to make sure you're not seeing things
and/or just recreate it on a different flash drive
other thing you can try is unplugging the internal HDD before booting into recovery
^ those are what I would do in that position

@Bob I... can't open the PC up right now

Bob
with that said, I'm gonna hop in bed and maybe sleep
@Rahul2001 usually there's an easy access panel that exposes the hdd without disassembling the thing

Okay, bye bye

Bob
at least if it's not an ultrabook

4:36 PM
thanks for the help
@Bob it is :(

Bob
bleh

And the plastic bottom is cracking, so I don't feel very confident about fiddling with it
Also, I don't have the tools handy

4:55 PM
anyone know (or can help me find out within the next half-hour) whether current implementations of WebRTC in Firefox and Chrome (stable) use WebSockets as the transport?

5:10 PM
@allquicatic I have no idea what that means

WebRTC is what powered the now-defunct Firefox Hello.
Firefox and Chrome are browsers

@ThatBrazilianGuy and, the, knows, anyone, can, helpfind, me, out, within, next, half, hour, whether, current, implementations, of, firefox, chrome, stable, use, as, a, thansport

!!wiki websockets

WebSocket is a protocol providing full-duplex communication channels over a single TCP connection. The WebSocket protocol was standardized by the IETF as RFC 6455 in 2011, and the WebSocket API in Web IDL is being standardized by the W3C. WebSocket is designed to be implemented in web browsers and web servers, but it can be used by any client or server application. The WebSocket Protocol is an independent TCP-based protocol. Its only relationship to HTTP is that its handshake is interpreted by HTTP servers as an Upgrade request. The WebSocket protocol makes more interaction between a browser and...

So, ours truly allquy just asked
"Hey guys do you know what protocol these brosers use for that chatty thing"

5:46 PM
@Rahul2001 I'll run for prez sec

@Psycogeek lol

@Rahul2001 lol. There are some idiots around if the reports of people trying it are actually true ...

@DavidPostill See the reddit thread :P

@Rahul2001 link to reddit thread?
Did somebody mention Powershell? :)

9:09 PM
> I have products that have this. USB hubs that are unpowered for example, but when you pop open the case it has the power jack right there, just covered by the case. Drill a hole, your $4.95 unpowered hub becomes a $14.95 powered hub.
I can back this up, it is true
Also,
> For those of you old enough to remember, 5 1/4" single sided floppy dr risks could be turned into a double sided disk with a hole punch.
> Turn any cassette tape into a recordable one by covering the holes on the end with tape. Viola! Your Fleetwood tape is actually Cannibal Corpse incognito.
> A Tesla Model S with the 60 kWh battery actually has the same battery as the 75kwh model, just software limited to not be able to charge all the way up. And the price difference is several thousand dollars.

"The comments placed under the (YouTube) video reveal that several people had actually tried it, with one branding it the 'biggest mistake of my life'" .
I feel so sad for Alex, still believing anything he reads on YouTube comments has any basis in reality or bearing on our lives :-)

9:24 PM
I jacked up my phone.

Some John Deere tractor engines are software-limited for power; hardware-wise, they're the same as the engines in slightly awesomer models

All Lotus Evoras come with powered mirrors, but it is a $450 option to get the switch to use it. Skip the option, buy the plastic switch for $5 on ebay and install.

@Rahul2001 never say that 4chan hasn't done anything good for the world

35 years of my sad lonely miserable life :-) where is the other people?

10:34 PM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO PLEASE
