Bob
2:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek two weeks, was it?

I've written over 40 hours of music in the past 3 days
god help me

Bob
o.O

Now I know why people walk out on em.

@electronbeam South Africa, if memory serves me right.

Bob
2:09 AM
one hour sleep + many cups of tea = somewhat awake bob at 12 PM

I haven't slept well the entire week and feel like a zombie

Can't sleep, can't function properly

This is why I avoid caffeine after 7

hi bob

Bob
2:12 AM
also many cups of tea = a very very full bladder
@JourneymanGeek s/caffeine/azure/
@allquicatic hi
I still haven't figured out how to upload that image :S

"Quicar" = bounce

Tea has caffeine :p

Whenever I see @allquicatic I imagine him bouncing

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't drink tea at night. It was Azure keeping me up -_-

my cat is a she, and she bounces when she's frisky

2:14 AM
@JourneymanGeek Black tea dies. I doubt camomile tea has anny caffeine

she will stand in front of me, and if I walk towards her enough for her to think I'm trying to get past her, she'll suddenly turn around in like 0.25 sec and run away real loudly

Bob
now i want to see a bouncing cat
3

I'm sure there's a gif somewhere out there

/giphy Pepe Le Pew

I re-discovered something quite suboptimal about my cheapish Bay Trail 11" Yoga 2. The Broadcom cheapo wifi doesn't support 5 GHz 802.11n.

2:16 AM
checks her waifu radar
"Damn, no hits."

and unfortunately, due to a combination of suburban 2.4 GHz saturation and a relatively poor implementation of 2.4 GHz standards on my Jetpack hotspot, that means I get fairly intermittent downstream at a small fraction of "line speed" (what I can get if I plug it in on USB over RNDIS)

Bob
@allquicatic funny, that... wifi is far more reliable than usb on my one

had it plugged in over USB for a few hours to download updates, Office, VS Community, Eclipse, Java JDK, Start10, VLC, Notepad++, Chrome and Firefox

Bob
wifi => 50/10, at the same time usb => ???/??? (can't even get the speedtest to finish)

@Bob OH -- make damn sure you're using the NDIS6 driver!

2:18 AM
@electronbeam Tinder? Pokémon Go?

I had that exact issue, plus several random bugs in various games with the old horrible RNDIS driver

Bob
@allquicatic how?
I'm using whatever huawei installed...

Right-click on it in Device Manager. Go to Update Driver. Manually select driver. Uncheck the "Compatible" checkbox. Go to Microsoft. Pick USB RNDIS6.

@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse I created a gadget that detects waifus in the immediate vicinity... it doesn't seem to work.

USB RNDIS6 is a driver shipped with Windows 8 and later (IIRC) -- might even be in Windows 7 SP1
it's specifically named "USB RNDIS6" and it's like 100x faster and more reliable than the default broken RNDIS -- I have no clue why the other one installs by default

Bob
2:19 AM
@allquicatic thanks, I'll have to check that when I get home
you might have just solved the thing that caused me many hours of frustration last night

oh, also, because the old horrible pre-NDIS6 driver is so broken, any attempts to do various broadcast-y things (Zeroconf/Avahi, Bonjour, Microsoft's LLDP, LAN gaming, Windows file sharing and domain discovery, etc.) causes some kind of low-level kernel thread hang for ~60 seconds

Bob
"This device can perform faster if you plug it into a USB 3.0 port"

and it hangs the Network Connections control panel too

Bob
*looks at very obviously 2.0 micro usb port*

it also causes XCOM 2 to get about 0.5 fps in the main menu

Bob
2:22 AM
@allquicatic hm, maybe I need to s/winscp(?=die in a fire)/pre-ndis6/

If you look at Driver Details for an RNDIS device, there will always be two device driver .sys files
Good: rndismp6.sys

Bob
@allquicatic uhm.

Bad: usb8023x.sys

Bob
neither.
it's a huawei driver
ew_wwanecm.sys

O.o

2:23 AM
furiously taps the screen of the waifu radar "Is this damn thing even on?"

do you have usb80236.sys? or no?

Bob
@allquicatic trying to upload to imgur but greenshot is dying
@allquicatic nup, just the one
maybe not rndis

ok, well, definitely try "USB RNDIS6" -- successful install will show rndismp6.sys and usb80236.sys... if it's compatible with your RNDIS adapter (which it should, unless Huawei somehow forked the RNDIS spec) it'll probably work better than anything else
not all USB tethering devices use RNDIS; for example, Apple doesn't with the iPhone

Bob
@allquicatic yea I guess it might not
"The required line was not found in the INF."
O_O

@allquicatic why did you unfriend me on Skype, and why did I just now notice it?

2:26 AM
I mean, it could be an RNDIS device where Huawei thought they'd implement their own RNDIS driver for no good reason
@electronbeam I have no idea / don't remember doing it and I don't know

@allquicatic >:V

Bob
driver date is Feb 2016 :\

Dog
!!Caaaaaat2

@Dog That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: caaaaaaat2, caaaaaat, caaaaat2

see if you can use strings on the Huawei .sys file or find the associated .inf and look for the NDIS version; if it's below 6, it's supposed to technically work with modern NT kernels, but as evidenced by the broken RNDIS driver which I think is NDIS 5.0, shit gets weird and potentially system-wide fuckage for NDIS <6.0

Dog
2:27 AM
ffs

Bob
greenshot is really pissing me off

Dog
@electronbeam o_0
@Bob 0_o

@Dog o_o

I actually wrote a SU answer today where I all but encouraged a guy to try and install a WinXP 32-bit driver on Win10 32-bit. A network driver.
Might feel guilty if he gets an NDIS 5.0 driver and can't figure out why X, Y and Z seem to randomly hang
"but Chrome works fine!!!!1111oneoneone"

@electronbeam hit it with wrench! Work for glorious union of people's Soviet.

2:30 AM
In the most drastic change yet towards better behavior, I am implementing, with Mother, a zero-tolerance policy on loss of self control.

@JourneymanGeek In Soviet TF2, dispenser erects YOU!

Dog
@allquicatic XP supports something as new as NDIS 5? o_0

you're missing the Drivers folder

I'm dumb.

Lol. In voice of sr3 Russian female :p

Bob

Is strings actually a 32-bit program?

Bob
hm, good point

2:32 AM
Try Sysnative instead of System32

Perhaps there are just no waifu

With a film on Sully coming out soon...

@BenN you're brilliant somehow; good to have you in here

Bob
@BenN huh, never knew that existed. I just copied the file out anyway :P

@electronbeam syntax error

Dog
2:33 AM
One thing I've never understood... C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ etc\hosts

Chesley Sullenberger had a reputation for being totally calm during the crisis.

Bob
much ndis in there

@Dog heavily BSD-inspired / BSD-lifted base TCP/IP stack.

@electronbeam or machine not realise might of the people.

I will never lose control of myself again. Ever.

Bob
2:34 AM
I'd screenshot but greenshot is throwing an enormous hissy fit

as evidenced by eerie similarity between Winsock32.dll symbols and the networking symbols within a UNIX libc.so

@bwDraco you're being disruptive.

I thought a few messages were fine...

@allquicatic lifted then rewritten IIRC

OMG... wtf... Louis Rossmann accepted my friends request and he's playing DOTA 2 right now O___O

Dog
2:35 AM
@allquicatic Interesting
Though system32\drivers \etc\hosts? eh

not gonna message him though, he's probably recording a video

Continuing, no reason to step out.

@allquicatic lol.

Bob
don't think there's an easy way to tell the version though

2:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek in order to fix my waifu radar I think I need to has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

Sadly, not familiar with the Windows networking subsystem.

@bwDraco it's fine, in the sense that it probably isn't bothering anyone (esp. relative to the volume of other, topical chatter in here at the moment), but it's not really interactive in the sense that you're not having a conversation with anyone in particular.... but, it's fine; not gonna say it's bad... it is what it is... carry on :)
@electronbeam Try ps -ef | grep -E 'waifu|whateverthejapaneseromanizationofhusbandis|python|java#justincasewifeorhu‌sbandisrunningunderaninterpreter'

@electronbeam maybe.

@allquicatic I just joked on my drink

Dog
I like having conversations with the bot. Especially when he/she/it sends me cat pictures

2:38 AM
@allquicatic I'm making that a facebook status. Thanks.
At this point I am only searching for waifus though

Well that's informative...

2:41 AM
Hey, PowerShell is great!

Dog
@allquicatic Are you suggesting we have non-favourite worst shell scripting language(s) ever?

I hope nintendo doesn't sue me for the Na'vi sample

@BenN are you the same guy who thought VBScript was great in 2005 when they started writing a ~50,000 test automation framework in VBScript at work, only to learn that it's like coding with kiddie gloves?
I mean, the only thing Powershell's good for is dynamically invoking the C# compiler and running a C# assembly :P

I was not that person :) It's obviously not a good language for programming large things, but for scripts, the object orientation is worlds ahead of fiddling around with batch

Dog
I'd rather code with kiddie gloves than code with a loaded gun and a chainsaw running in my face.

Bob
2:43 AM
@allquicatic apparently 6.20

@Bob the Huawei? huh.
@BenN oh, it's much better than cmd batch, but...

Dog
Heh, close

Bob
@allquicatic yea

BUT NO CIGAR UNBLOCK

@Dog congratulations, you just accurately described coldfusion

> The NDIS versions supported by various Windows versions are as follows:

NDIS 2.0: MS-DOS, Windows for Workgroups 3.1, OS/2
NDIS 3.0: Windows for Workgroups 3.11
NDIS 3.1: Windows 95
NDIS 4.0: Windows 95 OSR2, NT 4.0, Windows CE 3.0

2:45 AM
@allquicatic Interesting

5.0 = ancient, 5.1 = XP and Server 2003, 5.2 = Server 2003 SP2, 6.0 = Vista... that pretty much shows you where all the big innovation happened... Vista... been saying that for years lol

Dog
NDIS versions almost loosely follow Windows NT versioning

Anyway, going to sleep, zzz

my brain just short circuited and now I'm notes flat
dafuq

Dog
I'm too sexy for my fur coat.

2:46 AM
and yeah, when you plug in a random RNDIS device to a fully patched Windows 10 computer, you get a driver that... I'm not sure its exact version, but it's less than NDIS 6.0

Dog
G'night

I can't even words to fix what I was saying
I need caffeine.

Dog
@allquicatic Well, me plugging my random RNDIS device into a not-fully-patched WIndows 10 got a NDIS 6.3/6.4 driver

Bob
no ndis version on wmic nic :\
@Dog 'night

2:47 AM
@Dog return it to that poor cold skunk then.

oh wait it was ben
*scrolls up*

Dog
@Bob Me too!

@Dog huh, that's interesting
USB RNDIS6 driver is NDIS 6.30

Dog
That's what I plugged in
And the above powershell output suggests it's NDIS 6.4

2:50 AM
@Dog what .sys files did it load? look in the driver details
don't need path, just filename

Dog

okay, that's not an RNDIS device
that's a legitimate Realtek USB NIC

Dog
oh
nvm

RNDIS literally speaks the Remote NDIS wire protocol (serialized NDIS API commands) over the USB's raw bus, instead of exposing a native NIC's custom command interface

Dog
Oh

2 hours ago, by Dog
I'm so stupid that, if they had an award for stupid, I would definitely be in the running.

2:53 AM
RNDIS usually exposes something that behaves like a network adapter, but most of the mechanics of the networking are handled on the "device side" of the USB connection, not on the "host side" -- in fact, the computer requests over DHCP a local IP address for the computer, and gets it from the device side of the RNDIS link

Dog
Oh like those phake network adapters you sometimes get when tethering a phone?

IIRC, RNDIS operates nominally at Layer 3, whereas a NIC operates at layer 2

Dog
Not used wired tethering for a loooong time

@Dog that's exactly what RNDIS is, yes... Android phones and cellular 3G/4G hotspots support the protocol for the most part

Dog
Hmm I wonder what my internal 3G card uses
It appears to have disappeared from device mangler
@allquicatic Ah. Been a while since I used that. Also, last time I used it I wasn't paying much attention to how it worked. I was on a train, just hoping it worked

2:56 AM
except Apple phones, which expose some kind of custom ethernet NIC, I have no idea why they would want to expose a layer 2 virtual NIC instead of using the RNDIS standard

Bob
> Apple
not reason enough? :P

lol

Dog
My Nokia E51/E71 exposed a virtual COM port and modem
Ah IIRC that's what my laptop's internal USB modem does too
But since it's currently broken, like most things in my laptop, I can't actually check

@Dog and your prize! A combination Iron and smartphone! With a gorilla glass screen/soleplate for easy ironing and facetoasting!
@Dog It seems this one goes up to 11

on to another topic... so, this Yoga 2... it seems to only support 5mm SATA devices, based on the fact that I opened it up, replaced a 5mm HDD with a 7mm SSD and now the lid doesn't want to totally screw on

2:59 AM
@allquicatic seems to make sense.

Dog
@allquicatic Yup, I had the same

wondering if it's safe to leave a little tiny gap in the bottom... I don't want to strip the hexalobe screws

Dog
might have had something to do with the deformed case that I returned it for

@allquicatic or remove the cover of the sata device? ;p

O.o
how and why would I remove the cover of a Sandisk SSD Plus 240GB

Dog
3:01 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's what I did
Ended up disassembling my SSD, chucking the case, and just duct taping the PCB to the inside of the laptop

wtf

to make it thinner and cause low end/modern SSDs actually have oversized cases

this is some Louis Rossmann shit

@allquicatic no, its the sort of shit I do sometimes ;p

Dog
3:03 AM
That's what happened when I disassembled my 1TB 850 Evo. The smaller capacities have even smaller PCBs

@JourneymanGeek That was mentioned a few days ago

@Dog heh. grumble grumble hivemind grumble grumble

Dog
Now if you chucked 256GB MicroSDXC cards in each slot...
That's what happened when I disassembled my bag. There's a cat inside.

Bob
your disassembler is broken

Dog

I'm not sure what this picture is supposed to be

I forgot about that one!

@Dog assuming it could handle them....
and it was cheaper than the alternative

"The max support SD card is 32G.
Please note that when installed, use the same specifications TF card.
If you use a different capacity SD card, set RAID 0,the capacity is the minimum capacity TF card and TF card number of multiples"

Dog
3:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Now that you mention it, Samsung do have 2TB 850 Evos out now IIRC

this only really makes sense if you have a ton of microsd cards of the same size lying around

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Ouch, doesn't support SDXC (but at least it does support SDHC)
I suppose supporting SDXC requires paying a license to Microsoft for using exFAT

@JourneymanGeek I only steal buses, I don't buy them.

Cats and their obsession with cheezeburgers...

Dog
@JourneymanGeek Also, strictly speaking, he never actually bought or owned said bus
Don't tell me that doesn't look yummy

3:15 AM
naw, cats are not very digestable and chase funny. Also, you can tree them alllll day
@Dog assuming they even look like that.

I don't see any obvious way to open my SSD

they are usually snapfit

you can just slip something in a a seam and it comes apart
what ssd?

sandisk ssd plus

@allquicatic might be something like this bit-tech.net/hardware/storage/2013/01/28/…
tho, it would totally void your warranty...

ended up leaving the case on and removing foam under the SSD on the case and foam on the lid... still tight but maybe better (?)

Dog
Holy crap that's tiny

3:44 AM
meh, it works, not too arsed about a gap

lol. Job ad for a linux specialist "Must have extensive knowledge of windows" ._.

pretty sure if I go look on iFixit's docs about the 64-Bit Kit that bit would be marked "gooey foam shit remover"
that thing got rm'ed too

@allquicatic was the original drive spinning rust?

@JourneymanGeek 5mm spinning rust, yeah, those foams are intended to reduce vibration and noise obviously

4:00 AM
this isn't a bad little machine
Bay Trail Pentium N3520 with adequate for non-gaming Intel HD Graphics; 2.4 GHz 802.11n; 4 GB DDR3L (soldered; fuckers); much-enhanced perf with a bargain SSD replacing the bargain 5400RPM HDD
Macbook Pro is way faster of course :P

Lol
@allquicatic SSDs make anything better.

Bob
@allquicatic But for the same price (?) you can get a Core-m if you don't mind the lack of brand name :P

@Bob now you can. And he already had it.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ah, older one. missed that

@Bob I don't think Core M existed when I bought this

Is it possible to optimize a particular website for Data Optimization? Example - Consider I use a particular website (say Stack Exchange) frequently everyday then It will be good idea to get that site optimized so-that it can use less data.

Basically threw in a spare SSD.

@Pandya if you're talking about what you can do from the client side, there's very little you can do beyond what's already being done by your browser; though you may want to look into Google's Data Saver proxy: chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/data-saver/…
your browser already caches a lot of the data (unless you've (mis)configured it otherwise) if you frequently visit a site

@allquicatic I've already configured it.

@Pandya that's about as good as you'll get, then

@allquicatic Can you show cache related settings for Firefox?
By the way should I call it "Bandwidth Optimization" or "Data Optimization"? /cc @JourneymanGeek

4:19 AM
@Pandya Settings -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content -> make sure you aren't overriding the automatic cache management

Figured out why Edge was so slow an hour ago
apparently my ISP was being DDOS or ISPs are being DDOS

@Pandya I'd use a less technical term so people could more easily understand what you mean; instead of a noun I'd use a verb... "Is it possible to do something from my client to reduce the amount of data I use for a particular website?"

@allquicatic thanks doesn't overridden

Data Optimization could mean a lot of different things, and Bandwidth Optimization could also mean several things... these are very "overloaded" technical terms that are used all over for different purposes
though Bandwidth Optimization is a little bit clearer than Data Optimization

@allquicatic I think I'm just gonna get a wifi dongle for my desktop -_-

@arda thanks for the offer, but won't be going there any time soon, as the TS server is still up; it's just apparent that OVH's network may be struggling under the weight of some problem or DDoS
