00:00 - 15:0015:00 - 00:00

12:03 AM
I'm experimenting with Huginn github.com/cantino/huginn (a sort of IFTTT locally-hosted alternative) but the learning curve is a bit steep

"Newest versions of Visual C++ runtime are not going to be supported on Win7, so people can now build (desktop) apps that won't even run on Windows 7" - Unlikely. First, the UWP functionality is seperat from the C++ Runtime, and new Win32 functions are being added, so there is no reason to drop Win7 with RUntime or Visual Studio util 2019/2018
Microsoft won't extend Windows 7 support but Runtimes will support as until I estimate until after Windows 8.1 support ends. The reason is that 8.1 will be the last of the old support model.

Oh man, we're browsing the same Reddit threads

France has had EMV since 1992.
It's freaking stupid that we had to endure this much fraud until now, when chip and PIN/signature cards are finally becoming common

Bob
@BenN lol, askreddit?

12:18 AM
Yep, it seems we pass by the same comments quite a bit, judging by the links you sometimes drop
And I like The Old New Thing too; it seems you read that

Bob
@BenN yup
there's a good chance you've read some of mine, and I yours :P

;)

12:37 AM
ahhh this guy is my hero github.com/plasticbox/grpc-windows
I can imagine what triggered him to make that repo
> fuck these incompetent pieces of shit, I'm creating my own build system for gRPC on Windows that actually goddamn works
that is a repo spawned through hatred and pain
but it is a beautiful thing

1:00 AM
@Burgi yeah I blu tacked the WiFi card on this one.
Mind you it's possible I could attach it directly to the motherboard using the M.2 SSD slot I'm not using but that requires removing the mobo again just to be able to try it.
I've also used some blu tack to secure the velcro'd ssd from moving but remember my PC gets packed in a suitcase and wheeled about at least once a week so it needs to be a bit more secure than a typical desktop

Bob
@allquixotic does it work?

1:35 AM
@Bob it produces a bunch of .libs (I think that's Visual Studio static libraries)

Bob
1:48 AM
ah, yea

2:37 AM
user might need to be told what edits are used for :$

3:24 AM
why manufacturers don't build SLI port in laptops alongside with USB port to attach graphic card externally?

Bob
wat @ "sli port"

in sli port you can plug graphic card

Bob
sli... is not a port

4:18 AM
@AlanWatch there's no such thing as an SLI port.
SLI is a very specific interface
and you can probably install an external graphics card into most laptops's made within the last.... 5-6 years?
It would be terribly inelegant of course

4:46 AM
I probably might be mistaken..I didn't remember where did I read that..next time I'll take a note of the link

5:08 AM
There's a common/cheap dock called the EXP beast, connects over expressport, mini PCI or M.2 PCI
or many modern laptops will let you put in a video card on a 300-500 USD dock over thunderbolt.

2 hours later…
Bob
7:00 AM

lol WTF
I wonder if its a contractor
Also, these fabric earcups are so damn comfy

Bob
7:49 AM
@JourneymanGeek heh, my voids have fabric cups :)

@Bob the FA003s come with both
I actually reboxed the new pair for now, and am using the old ones
I prefer them for non gaming things tbh

Bob
8:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek this pair is good enough for both for me :P

yaaaaaaaaaaaaawn it's friday

ransomware is getting popular..I often download lot of cracks..I wonder if by mistake I download a ramsomware impersonating as a software crack then my data will be finished

Simple. Don't download cracks
7

sometimes I download cracks when I find that I desperately want that software

Bob
8:22 AM
...
point =>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
        your head

Its a bird, its a plane... its a Pooooint!!!!
@AlanWatch We discourage people from cracking software for various reasons, including it being against the TOS for the site

morning

Sometimes I download ransomware when I desperately want to get rid of data.

@Annaduh have you still not sorted out somewhere to live?

8:41 AM
how is it so warm at christmas?

it normally is
well, not quite this warm, but it's not that unexpected
also global warming

it was about 1 million degrees on the train

Bob
@Burgi *cough*

crazy antipodean!

Aussie Chrismas is in july
when they celebrate the survival of early settlers from dropbear attacks, by borrowing helmets from german settlers.
They thought the hats looked bloody silly so they just swapped em for more practical ones with corks to make noises to confuse the drop bears and make em drop early.

9:01 AM
i thought those were just how aussies carried their beer home

@JourneymanGeek I don't promote or encourage cracking and sharing of pirated data here..my mistake that I admitted here i did

@AlanWatch the worst that happens when you merely admit it is polite, kind mockery.
@Burgi well, they drink the beer, and use the bottles on the dropbears after they get confused and fall out the tree.
@Bob can attest to the truth of this.

can it be subjected to infraction if one even touches that topic no matter in which manner?

We'll tell you its a terrible thing, and you shouldn't do it
Unless you're like "hey, this is this neat piracy site I found!"

I CAN HAZ WAREZ?????????????

9:06 AM
If its a current affairs thing, like wassname, KAT closing down, talking about it is fine

what about if you have wooden leg and a parrot? can you talk about piracy then? ;)

arr.
Speaking of which
considering how pricy airline wifi is supposed to be...
what kinda idiot would... torrent on an aircraft?

i know of one scottish cat that might consider it
is torrenting legal if you do it over international waters?

@Burgi no
!! Giphy warez

9:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek a) ones who get it for free, b) if you've paid for it you'd more likely to do whatever you want given the price.

@Burgi I doubt anyone would bother ;p
@Annaduh point

@Burgi supposedly. People have set up private islands in international waters for that kinda stuff

how to pronounce Elise
el-sie?
el-eese?

you know how richard branson has that private island in the Caribbean? could he declare his island an independent country?

Doubtful

9:18 AM
@djsmiley2k second one

not without an army

how big does his army have to be?
iceland has an army of about 12 guys

big enough to stop the rest of the carribean opposing his rule
@Burgi No one wants to take iceland
Also they are hardcore, and only need 12 of them

they sent their entire army to afghanistan as part of the coalition

And still no one invaded
shows how hardcore they are
i remember when we were in rejkevvik
and there was a girl there with a husky, smoking, in what basically was some pj's
it was like -12C
o_O

9:21 AM
o.O
hang on, if you need an army these countries don't...
This is a list of countries without armed forces. The term "country" here means sovereign states and not dependencies (e.g., Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Bermuda), whose defense is the responsibility of another country or an army alternative. The term "armed forces" refers to any government-sponsored defense used to further the domestic and foreign policies of their respective government. Some of the countries listed, such as Iceland and Monaco, have no armies, but still have a non-police military force. Many of the 22 countries listed here typically have had a long-standing agreement with a...

9:35 AM
Woah, free countries!

@Burgi What if it was sold on eBay? They could sell it. No EULA here.
I want to report spam to Yahoo and they ask for message headers. I looked on message origin and it's a big chunk of code there. Where exactly are headers? Do they have tag?
No probs. I took care of this.

You need a bit more than an army I think
Taking over a country is compliated

9:56 AM
@OliverSalzburg i was going to say the obvious joke here but won't. I'll let someone else link to the Fawlty towers youtube...

From YouTube guy who claimed otherwise until I told him what you told me:

"I think he is right . As per Ohm' s law I=V/R , here voltage is 5v ,if load is 5Ω then it will take 1A current."

@Boris_yo i don't think you can resell OEM licenses at all
i'm fairly certain you can't even virtualize the installation

10:15 AM
I remember a hacker who virtualised the OEM license of windows 7

@AlanWatch he means 'within the bounds of the licence', not that it's not possible
Tho I believe with Win7 onwards, you can use the oem licence to run a vm on the original hardware it was issued with.

10:48 AM
And there's two different sorts of OEM licences
The small system builder licence is the one you'd probably end up getting that way
and you're supposed to be buying it with a piece of hardware
Well, were
the small system builder licence may not exist with 10

I might get to play with the licences on these laptops today
win7, HP OEM as far as I'm aware
wondering if I can image, sysprep and re-enter the oem key :/

assuming you even needed to

Q: Downgrade Windows 7 to XP

Anuj MattóõI have programmer which uses parallel port to burn IC. It's software only supports Windows XP version. I have a desktop with Intel Pentium Dual Core with ASUS chipset. The Windows 7 is installed on Desktop and works perfectly. Unfortunately, the CD-DRIVE is broken, so only option I am left with...

Ow?

Bob
11:11 AM

LOL
well they 3rd party that built our website (don't ask very angry) have put it live

11:29 AM
djsmiley2k: i'm doing the exactly same with lenovo devices and wds
even installing windows 10 via wds and activate it afterwards by entering the key is working :)

I still have Certificate of Authenticity key of windows 7 of my old laptop..I wonder what I can do with it

Not much

ASFAIK that COA key is registered first and tied to the hardware and then put it on the bottom

someone told me once that you're not allowed to sysprep oem machines(due to the ms license agreement), but ms didn't complained during the license audit we just passed
so there shouldn't be a problem at all

once I was thinking to install Windows 7 on a desktop and activate it with the COA key..will it work?

11:34 AM
no
oem keys are tied to your hardware(I think to the mainboard if I'm right)
that's only valid for Windows 7. I think they changed this for Windows 8.1 and up, but I'm not sure

@SaintCore 8 onwards have keys embedded on the system.
the OEM keys arn't actually used in the stock image

I wonder why today's manufacturer ties their application and games with the hardware..though it prevents normal users from doing piracy yet a potential hacker can change every little ID of its all hardware and make 2 PC exactly identical

yes I know, but you can export them with powershell and you are allowed to use it on another physical machine.

I don't see how me taking the image
syspreping it, putting the COA key back in is bad?
@SaintCore I don't have WDS
litterally doing this 'by hand'

first Microsoft allowed to use COA key by change product key feature but then they fix it and now asks windows 7 customers to call them

11:39 AM
Right now, they manually patch (for upto 3 days at a time) and then remove all the crap from the systems
But what if you use sysprep instead of change product key?

well I didn't included the key in the image. I'm installing Windows 10 without a key and activate it afterwards. If there is a key stored in bios this happens automatically via powershell and if there is no key present Windows presents me the "time to enter your key" screen after 1. boot when deployment is finished

that's what I'm planning to do with windows 7
cept, there's always a key in there because I can't install it without the key, can I ?

I don't know how this is for 7
but windows 10 you can install without a key
the option is even present(called "I will enter the key later" or similiar) when you just boot from cd

I wonder - if I do the 'generate recovery software' stuff

and I'm quite sure it's the same for windows 7

11:42 AM
then install that, it must come without the oem key?

erf. I'd check, but I have no idea where the windows 7 media for my old laptop was

@JourneymanGeek hehe yeah
I'm waiting to get my hands on some software hardware
I have no issue calling ms for each install and reactivating it either - it'd still be faster than waiting 3 days for patches and removing cruft.

WSUS offline update? ;p

I just got the 4 roll up packages
I couldn't quite figure out the WSUS stuff
So laptop 1 and laptop 2
key 1, key 2
I take laptop 1, with key 1, remove the cruft, update it. Image it
I apply the image to laptop 2. Right now it's got key 1 on it ?
Or does it not actually ever have teh COA key, but instead some 'oem imaging' key that HP uniquely has?
When you reinstall using HP recovery discs, it will be pre-activated and key installed, you don't have to do Anything.

why should you integrat the key in your image ?

11:47 AM
When you reinstall using HP recovery discs, it will be pre-activated and key installed, you don't have to do Anything.
@SaintCore It comes pre-set with key
otherwise I'll have to wipe it, but even then the oem disks contain the key anyway (or pull the key out of the bios).
So basically, if I take laptop 1, 'recover' the key from it, I can check if it's the same key on laptop 2
if it is, happy days
The recovery discs must be for that particular model of Notebook, when you start recovery manager it checks the bios for what is called a tattoo, the tattoo contains information about the notebook, serial number, model number, motherboard number, they must match the discs. Nothing to do with VLK.
urgh
oh wait, yeah that's fine but that doesn't say where the key comes from D:

if you wipe the key out before sysprep there should be nothing in your image
or am I missing something ?

how can you wipe the key?
you mean don't put it in?
then I have to use the non-oem install
Though it seems HP recovery disks are tied to a serial number of the device
that sux

I've checked the image of both windows 7 and Windows 10..the OEM key is not kept in the image

K, so it's in the pretend bios
when installing it pulls it out
but if i'm using an image, I'm not 'reinstalling' so I don't think it'll pick it up

it will

11:54 AM
o_O?

not automatically

How then?

are you using recovery image?

bout you can do it with powershell:

No
Using a image containing the cleaned up, patched install

11:54 AM
$computer = gc env:computername
#Get OEM Key

$key = (Get-WmiObject -query ‘select * from SoftwareLicensingService’).OA3xOriginalProductKey
if ($key) {
$service = get-wmiObject -query “select * from SoftwareLicensingService” -computername $computer
$service.InstallProductKey($key)
$service.RefreshLicenseStatus()
}
this worked for me for about 100-150 devices...

if you are using OEM image of win7 then it'll be activated automatically

even if I've imaged it onto another device?

yes

I've downloaded a fresh win 7 iso from ms, prepared my image, deployed it to the devices and activated windows with the powershell-commands from above

11:56 AM
using OEM image on another device won't activate windows

windows 10 not 7
but it should be the same for 7

@AlanWatch yeah exactly...

windows 7 and Windows 10 OEM have completely different activation process

/me nods

@AlanWatch

11:57 AM
Fight of the random coloured icons!

@AlanWatch Well at least it is working with devices that came with a windows 7 oem licence on which I install a fresh version of windows 10
I don't see why this shouldn't work if you do the same except that you reinstall windows 7 and not windows 10

@SaintCore you have digitally entitled your Windows 10 with your previously installed windows 7

after install of windows 10 ?
or before ?

after

yes
and we even passed a ms licencing audit and they sayed all is fine...

12:01 PM
Yeah but OEM Win7 is allowed to upgrade to win10
it's not allowed to 'reinstall' it seems

yes

other than with OEM reinstall media (which we don't have but might be able to create).

you can reinstall it as many times

can you edit the oem media?

what specifically you want to edit?

12:03 PM
can I just use a OEM image from a system that's been patched?

patched by whom?
by the way OEM recovery image doesn't have key either..I checked it

so there should be no problem at all :)

1. add patches
2. remove crap software
3. take image
4. install image on other laptops
5. cry as suddenly they all deactivate
@AlanWatch Yes I get this, but once I've installed it, there is a key
if I take a image of that machine, there IS a key in it

that key was copied from your BIOS and put it inside a HIVE extension file

so after reimaging, can i get rid of it, and redo that bit?

12:10 PM
you want to edit OEM recovery?

no
well, that would work

my friend has removed and installed windows 10 five times fresh and every time his windows was activated automatically as soon as he connects with internet

@AlanWatch but... on a different hardware?
you're missing this point
and the point that I'm not reinstalling
I'm ghosting an existing install
and win 7 and win 10 are massively different about their activation too

!! Taytaytay

12:23 PM

@djsmiley2k Er Wha
I don't know where this conversation started or what it's about but it's making no sense

i heard taylor swift had died
#rumours

I actually heard that eminem was died in 2006 due to excessive use of sleeping pills
#rumours

EVERYONE IS DEAD!

@djsmiley2k you didn't specify what you were trying to do..are you trying to use recovery image in another device?
why 2G internet disconnects when a call is come?

12:39 PM
@Burgi You can blame the Aussies for that one.

how did this Taylor swift dead rumour spread?

@AlanWatch i just started it

TAYLOR SWIFT IS A ZOMBIE!!!!

"On Thursday (December 08) the singer's reps officially confirmed that Taylor Swift is not dead. “She joins the long list of celebrities who have been victimized by this hoax. She's still alive and well, stop believing what you see on the Internet,” they said."

12:47 PM
lot of people die on internet and some get resurrected in a tv show

@Burgi or clones

@AlanWatch no
trying to use a image on another device

lol
"I have tried customer services of Windows(Microsoft) and Dell, but Microsoft advised me to contact Dell, while Dell advised to contact Microsoft."

Oooooooiiiiioiooiiiiiiuuiiuuuiiooooo
You can see my dreams :O

1:26 PM
Wooo spooky

Wooo swifty

1:50 PM
@Bob ._.

This is how the end comes
not with wars, but with sickness and our inability to cope.

Hello!

bonjour!

Ca Va?

Wow never seen someone's name as loading... before

2:14 PM
looks like I'm doing this instead of getting protobuf to install its headers somewhere with the build script
for i in $(find .); do bn=$(basename "${i}"); ext=${bn##*.}; if [ -f "${i}" ] && [ "x${ext}" != "xh" ] && [ "x${ext}" != "xproto" ]; then echo "deleting " "${i}"; rm -i "${i}"; fi; done
(don't try this at home kids, it deletes every file recursively starting in the current directory that doesn't end in .h or .proto extension)

added an -i to the rm to make it safer for idiot copy-pastaers

meh, if someone wants to run random stuff they've been told not to run... ;p

so it checks if it's a file
if the extension is bn##* and the extension isn't xh ?
oh wait no
not bn, basename
urgh my head hurts, why you do this too me!?

@djsmiley2k the ##*. magic is to find the file extension (without the period)
if $i is ./protobuf/thisneedstobedeleted.cc, bn gets set to thisneedstobedeleted.cc and ext gets set to cc

2:23 PM
so you're taking basename, then what's ##*. get
how does ##*. get that tho

don't ask me; I just googled it and copy pasta'ed from SO
2131
A: Extract filename and extension in Bash

PeteshFirst, get file name without the path: filename=$(basename "$fullfile") extension="${filename##*.}" filename="${filename%.*}" Alternatively, you can focus on the last '/' of the path instead of the '.' which should work even if you have unpredictable file extensions: filename="${fullfile##*/}"

hahaha
fair enough

This guy created Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, And Mario

MIYAMOTO SAAAAAAAAAAN!

2:30 PM
Round face, spiky hair?
Oh, just took a minute or two to load

3 and half meg gif ;p

my swtor guild last night took a guild pic
and yes that's 21:9; don't judge my Predator X34
here's the 9.8 MB full scale version, uncompressed: smcnam.me/pf20.png

@allquixotic >_>
(totally not judging. Even if I'm totally the dual UHD mafia ;p)

@JourneymanGeek dual 4K?

@allquixotic /me judges your Predator X34 and becomes jealous

2:38 PM
yup

@allquixotic we sentence you to a resolution of 640x480

@JourneymanGeek that's a ridiculously huge framebuffer; I have about 97% as many pixels as a single UHD monitor

@allquixotic yup

@allquixotic No orcs? No love.
</3

... orcs?

2:41 PM
/me shrugs
I played an orc in Everquest

to my eye, the 3440x1440 34" looks approximately the same pixel density (maybe very slightly more) as my old 28" 1920x1080

<3 never forget

throws @djsmiley2k into a sarlacc pit, where he will be digested slowly for all eternity

@djsmiley2k Star Wars doesn't have orcs. >_<

Orc's get everywhere

2:42 PM
it has Gamorrean guards, but those are Imperial, and not playable, and we kill them

look at Warhammer, they survived for 40,000 years unchanged!

@allquixotic 27 inch UHD is "I can't see individual pixels"
and 99% of what I use it for is text anyway

I can't see individual pixels either

move your face closer

@JourneymanGeek how much memory does your dwm.exe take up? I recall it would scale linearly with your framebuffer size
maybe they fixed it
mine takes up 52 MB
man, long-running chrome tabs have a tendency to leak memory severely due to all the background http requests
I have a chrome.exe eating up 752 MB

@Burgi I think I have an answer with a spreadsheet and all that

A: Will the pixel density difference be visible between 4K and 2K monitors at 27" size?

Journeyman GeekIMO "sort of". Its definately better and sharper, but native 4k content is pretty rare. I'm looking at a 1080p and a 2180p display right now. I do do some sort of upsampling in my video player for 720p video and it looks fine. (Would screenshots be of help here? I donno). There's a lot of disa...
