@Psycogeek Yes, it's really handy! I always install a Trojan.Banker in all my friends' PCs!
@JourneymanGeek O__o HOW?! Unless it's browser plugins, otherwise this user went out of h(is/er) way to get malware.
sudo apt-get install adobe java free internet flash reader speed up my pc for free

@ThatBrazilianGuy: browser plugin that emails people on mac and windows ;p

@JourneymanGeek Yes, browser plugins are "great" as cross-OS malware

I was a little suprised ;p

So was I when my dad managed to get malware after I nuked his 200% infected PC, installed Ubuntu and said "let's see if you can get it infected now".
He did.
This proved useful, at least for firefox: addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/public-fox

12:16 AM
Also, I can't stress on how important it is to have AdBlock installed for the tech-unsavvy user.

@ThatBrazilianGuy: I'm pondering switching over to ublock
@ThatBrazilianGuy: Its not the most efficient thing, but hosts files are a nice thing

i find that an active-X block stops loads of stuff. the landlord has to press a button to allow active-x. Active-x was one of the first ways to get full program operation from browser. java has sort of been more secure than it, but i have not found it as nessisary to block All scripting (java)

@JourneymanGeek Oh yeah, I remember the other day when I was looking for a way to stop ADs from the router and found a few dozen of constantly-mantained host files.

once there is no active-x, and no scripts , and no .net programs possible to run from browser, i can walk through the depths of hell, without anything actually getting to the computer from the browser. The stuff that stays in the browser then (stupid warnings) are then laughable

But hosts files are only good for entire domains / IPs. Not for partial URLs and CSS ids/classes.
Although, because of AdBlock, lots of advertisers are avoiding it nowadays

12:27 AM
spywareblaster puts in thousands of kill bit (kind of things) in the registry for active-x , passivly disabling them before they run. and they keep adding in more. plus it puts pure crap sites in the restricted zone, again passivly taking out 17,000 pieces of junk without any real slowdowns or scanning junk
Active-X kill bits , are just using the windows compatability system (i think) and saying no to them. one caveat a registry cleaner will see it as something inactive and remove them :-(
The new java 8 (update) has changed the default security for java. only high and higher now. which i think means there has to be a cert somewhere ? so the criminals have to make that extra effort to make thier viruses more secure :-)

@ThatBrazilianGuy: true but I tend to consider that to be part of a multilayered stupidity mitigation policy
Oh, now that minecraft dosen't need a java install, I can get rid of it \O/

1:09 AM
ok,so I'm having a nightmare of a time with my machine.. I'm going to vent a bit, and if anyone has any ideas, feel free to pipe in
so apparently MSI has some sort of strange bios issue where one day the bios interface may no longer be accessible

oddly, this does not disable your ability to use the PC normally. Both windows and linux work fine...meanwhile the bios is completely inaccessible
this is one of the many references I've found to it online tomshardware.com/answers/id-2355476/…
one guy even took a picture of his monitor showing the underscore.. I am seeing it and can confirm
grub works fine, and I can boot into lubuntu. Unfortunately, I accidentally fragged the windows SSD and wanted to attempt to reinstall it....but I can't reinstall without bios...or to be more specific, the bios seems to have reverted to "secure boot" disabling most of grub's functionality and stopping me from booting from my usb drives...

@deltree i only know desktops, and do not do linux, but there are a few options in todays new bioses that make the thing so bloody fast, it doesnt wait for user input. instead you have to apply the OS software to get back in. Now hows that gonna work when the os is borked?

so if anyone has any ideas for repairing my bios I'm all ears. All the forums I've seen have given up when the user sent in for an RMA. I attempted a manual CMOS reset, taking the motherboard out and popping the battery and everything...but nothing seems to fix it
the OS is fine...
well, lubuntu is
windows is shot, but it shouldn't matter
but yes, I know what you mean
sorry, thinking about 10 things at once

Simple things like "fast boot" which before would drop some long time scanning or stop the memory test, now they drop the user too :-)

1:21 AM
anywho, I can access the bios, by grub and by pressing delete at startup...but the bios is just that black screen with an underscore...no interface at all...doesn't appear to be a video glitch either, as standard commands like esc,f10 don't do anything

Then what about the more normal things, legasy USB for any input devices to be operational at . . . .

the boot order selector key was F6...that doesn't seem to do anything anymore

Oh like the new fancy schmancy uefi software isn't working right?

Press and hold it as you turn on the system?

1:23 AM
I am not skilled enough to make grub cooperate with my NTFS usb drive....in secure boot mode
@JourneymanGeek press and hold what?

it doesn't do anything
well...actually, as it's shutting down it flips back and forth between the splash screen and console in lubuntu...but I'm not sure that's helpful

I think you should mail it to me, I feex it up real fine, and get it back to you . . . in like a year or so :-)

I trust you implicitly, should I include my credit card and SSN so you can find me?

no just provide a return address, and dont be moving :-)
there is a curser, so you know 1 thing, the video is still "showing"

1:30 AM
I feel like a year is too long, can I pay for expedited service?
@Psycogeek you misunderstand, I'm using the machine to chat right now
the OS runs fine, the bios obviously works
the interface is just....gone

did the CD or some download have one of them softwares for getting into the bios ? Which only are made for windows systems? and if you used such a booting that engages the bios to come up on post?

so, in my experimentation, I have manaed to back out of grub (esc, then 'exit')
it throws an ugly red error when you do
but when you press enter (ok)
something amazing happens
windows 8 recovery screen appears
and won't let you do anything
:)
I looked into the update instructions....more than one person has bricked their MSI trying to use the windows software to update it....it's best to flash the bios from....the bios....which I can't access...and no, there's no linux software for it...I'd think it unwise to run it in wine or a VM
this is how MSI recommends you update the bios file:///home/deltreey/Downloads/Flash_BIOS_by_UEFI_BIOS_Setup_Utility_en.pdf

Yea that is a given, flash from dos like methods .

so that's been....since last thursday
my wonderful nearly weeklong adventure

but your bios is working, and since when does a bios put up a flashing curser ?

1:39 AM
I'm tempted to toss the machine altogether...as stupid and wasteful as it seems. The battery hasn't worked correctly since I took the thing apart the first time.... both windows and linux weren't charging it and thought it was empty or....even once they thought it was a desktop machine

it is more like if your seeing a flashing curser, it has already gone past the uefi.bios

no flashing, static cursor
in the middle of the screen

by curser you mean mouse curser?

no, I mean underscore character
I can't find the post with the photograph, I'll look again

50 lashes with a wet noodle
I think there are instances where a UEFI can put up a text underscore, not positive. but that has to be one sure clue as to where the softwares are at.
If that has to be out to booting, and beyond the posting, then your just not getting TO the bios (which you know exists)

1:44 AM
the windows recovery screen has an option for UEFI, when I select that, press delete at startup, or press system settings in grub, I get to that screen with the static cursor...which I am 90% sure is the "bios" interface now
you think I'm missing the prompt because of fast boot?
and that uefi is not the bios?

I still think that it is likely that you have not caused the system to get into the bios.
The grub bootloader, and 2 oses, and all the things they can do, adding to the confusions.

fair enough
so your suggestion is? hold f6 at startup? I can give it another shot
that's an exact image of the screen

on a desktop , we would just reset the uefi/bios to defaults, not so easy on laptop. but we would not flash it, because that adds in more possibilities for issues.

I did take the whole thing apart and pull the cmos battery and press the button
it didn't change anything
which points to your idea again...that I'm just missing the prompt

@deltree that sucks
at least we would expect a bios or uefi to stop around there . and say the cmos settings are ______ something, and ask you what to do to continue

1:51 AM
@deltree ya

alright, gonna reboot a few times and try more f-keys at startup...be back in a few minutes with results

before startup. press and hold. THEN power.

yup, did that with f6, f1, f3, and delete, only delete did anything...bringing me to that same screen with the cursor
so that's me reporting it
*in

hm
boot with no drives in?

on an obscure forum, someone suggested holding ctrl+fn+num7....not sure why, but I'm tempted to try it...unfortunately, there is a key combination that will lock you out completely based on what I've been reading which has me...a tad paranoid
that's actually not a terrible idea
I'll be back in a few minutes after trying to boot without any drives

2:02 AM
oh hey, there is a screw here? does that belong somewhere :-)

@ThatBrazilianGuy: Oh, if you're curious - the malware I got was flipora/flipmailer

2:22 AM
hah!
dances
so pulling the hard drives did nothing...at first... The system just went to a blank screen. pressing delete brought up the blank screen with the cursor
but...
when I put the drives back in...windows took the priority...instead of grub...so the recovery screen popped up

HAH
I had no idea it would do that ;p

frightened that I had lost everything (as most options didn't work) I pressed escape (enter uefi)
and I sighed as the blank screen with the cursor appeared....
for just a second before the bios appeared!
so apparently, the cursor screen is a predecessor to the bios and it was locking up
but now I'm in...and free
thanks for all your help guys

118 hours in.
All systems are operational, but the attack is still ongoing.

Q: Computer killed by insecticide; what compounds are likely?

Tom ZychA friend of mine sprayed "Black Flag Home Defense" insecticide under her computer. It died immediately. I'm trying to figure out why, and how fixable it might be. I found an MSDS, but it only says what the active ingredient is, deltamethrin, 0.02%. Apparently everything else is proprietary and/o...

The reason to still "worry" about SSD is, they literally went from the manufactures themselves saying that SLC would last ~1Million rounds, to the MLC-TLC 10-30K rounds. So all the people worried back when it was 1 million , why should they be relieved now?

Cause the cheap stuff went from TLC to 3D mlc? ;p

3 wheels went flat on my car, damn good thing i started with 8

Bob
Because we discovered in practice most people never hit the limit, and it's cheaper, and they put more spare in.
The biggest issue in practice has always been controller failure, not flash failure.

1.5PBW with absolutely no sign of trouble.

8:01 AM
yea when the nand should have made it to the next century, it was the contollers that died
still years after all that, i bet my metal box around the stuff, still provides better insulation, than heat sinc. Knowing that the controller could have used the whole of the aluminum box around it to have it be cool as a cucumber.

Bob
@DragonLord => techreport.com/review/27909/… 840 Pro hit 2.4 PB.
Again, it's the spontaneous controller failures that are the real issue.
Flash failure is pretty predictable.

Innova Engineering's endurance test is still a work in progress.
My SSD 850 PRO has about 7.3 TB on it so far.
I can't imagine exhausting the endurance on it.

8:19 AM
funny comment there
Hah! I told you those SSD things weren't reliable!

-Seagate

heh
I tend to assume any one thing is unreliable and have multiple points of failure where I can ;p
For all of those who were worried...
Ok I just saw everyone's responses and started cracking up, made me look dumb as hell lol. I've been charging it like this until now and nothing bad has happened but I've stopped it now. Probably shouldn't have done it until I got responses... but anyways I'll do what you said. Thanks. — Ashour Badine 59 mins ago

techreport.com/review/27062/… the pros in this test didnt make it to 1Peta even :-( Dooo de doo daa, making a backup now :-)

The guy who tried to mvcgver the power supply isn't dead.

I do not understand what he even did? But heck 50% of the charging i do here, is wired up with clipleads magnet leads and banna plug leads
sure a few thing blow up now and then , but thats what a fire extinguisher is for right?

8:40 AM
Make sure its the right sort!

all this SSD writing to death, and they should have had HDs being thrashed the whole time too. if 1in4 of them died (working 4x as slow) during the SSD tests, mentally i could call it a wash
I feel like my setup should be a complete reversal, to use the SSD for the store once read a few times things. and beat the heck out of the HDs. But i failed to see the point of the Speed, if it wasnt in the most used location.

9:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek How's YNAB going? :P

What's the best place to buy a Windows 8/8.1 license?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Cheap? Safe? What?
If you want safe, go to your local large-ish store :P

@Bob Preferably cheap.

Their tablets look interesting. But yanno 3 month rule, and I already have a usable tablet ;p

Bob
@MichaelFrank You could give /r/microsoftsoftwareswap a shot. No guarantees.

I've got a laptop without any kind of license available to it that I want Windows on.
@Bob Hmm... interesting.

9:30 AM
@MichaelFrank: Before windows 8, I'd say find a local online hardware retailer and order a OEM version

$25 for a Win7 license from that subreddit. Not bad...

Q: Why choose SATA 2 over 3?

RASBJust installing an SSD into an HP Probook 6560b and noticed that Samsung Magician states that the drive is connected with SATA 2. I looked in the BIOS and SATA 2 (3.0gbps) was chosen, rather than SATA 3. This was the default setting. Why would SATA 2 be default rather than 3? I realise HDD will...

Such fun, new toy, 1/2 the fun getting it to work

10:06 AM
how to answer such a question, of course improved speed of the storage could "use more power", but 99.8% only because things can occur faster. Did you get it working at sata 3 or not.

10:17 AM

oh you fast

@Bob: The cable winder in the pistons are brilliant.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not so good for transport though :\

@Bob We go to india for family functions. Much more room there. Can fly it on my granma's roof or something ;p

Bob
Ah. Dunno about yours, but the CX-10 only has a range of ~15-20m

Oh, flying the x4 indoors in a apartment ... is tricky

bob.rocks is 50 ;D

O_O

@OliverSalzburg Well, I use Namecheap, but searching on Gandi cause it has a wider range
Huh, bob.lc is $26

Ah, that's what I wanted to ask. But then I can stop browsing ;D

Bob
that'd actually be a nice link shortener domain
Dunno why .red is so cheap

lol
mostly has .coms ._.

Bob
.uno is $16, .cat is $13

12:57 PM
did they lift the weird restrictions on .cat?

Bob
.cat requires publishing one page in Catalan within 6 months... what, just one page with text in that language?
copies random Wiki article

@Bob apparently not :P nyan.cat used to have links to Catalan language learning sites

smc
who was regulating that rule?

having bob.cat be cheap like that is probably a sign that you are a cat inside, Bob, and not a fox
:D what does the fox say?! MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW MEOW!

Bob
12:58 PM
> The .cat domain is not territorial, but applies to the whole Catalan-speaking community, whether or not a site is based in Catalonia. In order to be granted a .cat domain, one needs to belong to the Catalan linguistic and cultural community on the Internet. A person, organization or company is considered to belong if they either ... are endorsed by 3 people or 1 institution already using a .cat domain name.
The cat-domain virus :P
It starts with one...

smc
never liked cats

rofl

smc
for a good reason

Bob
Huh, .blue is also $16

12:59 PM
so nyan.cat is one

Hey guys! Would you answer a question to me?

smc
we will at least try

@JuanRocamonde: If I said no, I might break the world.

I don't know if anyone knows about Raspberry Pi here
