I have a feeling this could be exploited in an XSS attack. Get the SE team now. — DragonLord the Fiery 39 secs ago
Okay, can confirm XSS vulnerability.

heh. Almost posted this in an answer
Ended up going with a no no no no cat

@DragonLord Didn't seem to do what you wanted it to.

I'm checking for a very possible security bug.
If I can exploit it, then we need a patch now

Couldn't you do this in a private chatroom? ;P

1:05 AM
I'm praying this isn't exploitable :\

1:30 AM
So, say there's this windows PC filled with malware that I can't nuke from orbit.
I'l run all the software I find on the first page here bleepingcomputer.com/download/windows

I'd start with a bootable av CD. Maybe ms defender
Then mbam.

(Ok, smitfraufix was last updated in 2010, so forget it)

I imagine running ALL those tools will have just as much of a negative effect as the malware.

1:34 AM
Ya. Combofix? Is that still a thing?
But definitely the live CD virus scan

The top dowloaded software in bleepingcomputer are
- ComboFix
- AdwCleaner
- RKill
- Junkware Removal Tool
- Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
- TDSSKiller
- Farbar Recovery Scan Tool
- RogueKiller
- Shortcut Cleaner

ComboFix can nuke your computer, be careful. :P

@MichaelFrank O_o
Maybe I should create an image backup.

ya.
Combofix is a last resort :

It's a tool that the BleepingComputer staff only suggest when they can walk the user through how to use it.

1:37 AM
@MichaelFrank I recall using it a handful times years ago and never messing a computer when running it

Ahh. That explains why its not documented at all

OK, it was a little counter-intuitive with the reboot in safe mode and then choose a text menu and then reboot again... But can it bork a PC?

@JourneymanGeek Is there any "official" bootable CD for ms defender?
> You should not run ComboFix unless you are specifically asked to by a helper.
BUT I AM THE HELPER! WHO IS GOING TO ASK ME?!?!?
> do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained.
WAT
Do I need to pay for a course in how to use it? [/sarcasm]

1:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek linky?

@ThatBrazilianGuy You're not a properly trained BleepingComputer staff member.
But you CAN be!

650 MB of antimalware software
This is getting ridiculous.

What's keeping you from nuking the system?

It's for work.
We don't have (1) a defined process of what software and procedures are applied for new machines, (2) new machines for the user while we fix this one, (3) storage space for the backup image

You can solve (1) and (3) with this exact situation!

A: Stuffing copper wire into laptop charger cable?

DragonLordYou absolutely do not want to do this. The wire could slip out and short-circuit the power terminals, resulting in dangerous arcing, overheating, and potentially a fire. This is especially likely to occur when you detach the cable from the adapter proper. Alternatively, the wire could become ex...

+1. This is a great glimpse of what the ♦moderator tools look like. I've been very eager to get the ♦ at Super User (after a narrow loss in last year's election) and have done some very ambitious things, pushing the limits of what's available to me as a 15k+ user to keep the site at its best. Just ask the regulars in the Root Access chat room to get an idea. — DragonLord 3 mins ago

Q: How does the site look like to a moderator?

Amith KKThe site has special features for moderators. Can I see how the site looks like to the average moderator(tools and stuff)

@Sathya Lots to learn...
Wow
The mod tools are far more powerful than I've ever imagined
I do understand much of this is secret because it contains confidential user information
@Sathya: Am I a bit too ambitious with my quasi-mod work?
I've been pushing the limits of the tools available to me.

@DragonLord too ambitious is a huge understatement
and if you ask me, you haven't been pushing the limits of the tools, you're probably just scratching them
it feels like you're pushing them because you're too focused on showing that you're pushing them for public display of your suitable candidature.

6:49 AM
@Sathya Yeah
But the end goal has always been quality
What changes would you suggest?
I think I've gone insane over an election

while we appreciate any help from the Community(the site is run by Community) after all, Mods hate all guns blazing glory because it's not sustainable and you end up in a situation which is worse than before, because every one else will leave it to the one person doing everything. And when that one person is gone, it puts more load on us moderators
I don't understand why you're doing this
we don't have any scheduled elections
even if we did, you'll get called out for pushing stats before elections
(even if that's not the intention)
so like everyone has said
breath, relax, take a break
come back
do things slowly.
it will get noticed

The pace of contributions has slowed a bit because of academics
I'm trying to answer more questions

you tried all guns blazing for answers/comments
it failed
you tried all guns blazing for close votes
it failed
now you're trying all guns blazing for spam
it'll burn you out
likewise

Spam hunting has been a long tradition of mine.

and your next target is delete votes
now in this

6:53 AM
I'll scale back on this.

all people will get is
oh he tried to showboat, nyah, nyah, failed. dunno how he'll keep up with more responsibilities as a mod

I still go through the review queues.
I still post high-quality answers.
These core activities aren't going to stop.

HAMMERTIME!

I'll slow the pace of contributions and will contribute in a natural manner.
I am not letting myself burn out.
This started during Winter Bash, but Winter Bash is over.

(on in case anyone is curious, last week, we mods handled 871 flags with an average handling time of 2.5 hours)

I feel like I have a duty to serve the community. This duty doesn't exist. Participation is VOLUNTARY.
@Sathya: As a preventive measure, is a suspension appropriate?

maybe, dunno.

If these problems continue, I think I need a mod message, an official warning to stop.

HAMMERTIME!

I think I'm getting myself a bad rep and this is counterproductive.
Like I said, participation is voluntary. There is absolutely no duty to serve unless I'm actually a moderator—and I'm not.

@DragonLord mod messages aren't meant for those, and the community team isn't going to take lightly if that was issued as such

7:06 AM
Are my recent contributions in any way harmful to the community or the moderators?
This has been going on for more than four months, since the start of Winter Bash 2014, and I think I'm finally running out of steam.
Relying on increasingly exotic tools to perform community moderation tasks is not sustainable.
in Ask a Super User Moderator, Jan 14 at 23:05, by DragonLord
@JourneymanGeek I'm very sorry to say that your fears have come true. I cannot contribute at my full pace any longer and may retire from Stack Exchange completely within the next few months.
This will not be allowed to happen.

@DragonLord No, but they're more harmful to you in the long run if you can't sustain.

In the end, contributing to Super User should be a fun hobby, not an arms race in preparation for a mod election.

I will stick with my core value of delivering the highest quality contributions, and will stop abusing the tools like I have been these past few months. It really makes me look like a power-monger (even if this isn't my goal).
I think my conduct is growing increasingly evil as a result of my pursuit of the diamond.
This is not the sort of conduct expected of a 10k+ user.
This conduct will stop.

I am only making myself a bad example to follow.
in Ask a Super User Moderator, Jan 14 at 23:14, by DragonLord
The first few days after I had suddenly stopped, I noticed the size of the review queues jumped over 1000 for the first time in several days.
I don't want to make the mod team utterly dependent on me.
This is not my goal.

@DragonLord That's not the problem.
The real problem is you getting caught up in something. That's all.

@slhck Clarify?

We always appreciate people trying to help out, and if they don't or stop doing something, that's also fine. But don't waste your time on something you can't sustain, getting the hopes of others up.
You know.. moderate. In moderation.
5
Don't sweat it.
Moderators aren't doing the same things "normal" users do—even 10k users. We have different tools and normally do different things. In fact, with the implementation of the review queues we've had to do less and less of the "normal" work and could focus on all the individual problems raised by users with custom flags.
Anyway, I'm rambling.. but the thing is: just do whatever you can do, or want to do, in moderation. Anything you do is appreciated implicitly, but don't expect people to pat you on the back constantly.

Does a moderator who goes through hundreds of review items a day risk getting his/her diamond revoked for abuse of power?

No, definitely not.
But I think it'd be hard to find such a moderator.

7:23 AM
It is inconsistent with the SE Theory of Moderation.
Jeff Atwood on May 17, 2009

We believe deeply in community moderation. That’s why we appoint Pro Tempore Moderators and, ideally, democratically elected community moderators for every site in our network. But what do community moderators do? The short answer is, as little as possible!

From the very first version of Stack Overflow faq way back in mid-2008, our goal has always been to give power back to the community:

Stack Overflow is run by you! If you want to help us run Stack Overflow, you’ll need reputation first. Reputation is a (very) rough measurement of how much the Stack Overflow community trusts you. R …

This is not what a moderator should be doing.

I see what you mean, but like I said, nobody's doing that.
We honestly have better things to do.

I'm worried that my recent conduct and attitude can ultimately lead me to commit this sort of abuse if and when I get the diamond.
This has the implication that I am not fit to become a moderator.

As a normal user there's not much abuse you can do.
And if you did, we'd have told you.
@DragonLord Let's put it bluntly, who cares about whether you think or anyone else thinks you're fit to become a moderator? We are currently not planning any elections. And when we do, this can be re-assessed properly within the entire community.

I'm worried about seeing myself that by the time I'm elected, I start trying to clear the entire close votes review queue, instead of leaving most of the work to the community as was intended by the designers of Stack Exchange.

Hm. If that were the case we'd probably ask you to stop.

7:29 AM
HAMMERTIME!

Or consult with the community team.
Anyway, I have to get to work, can't continue this discussion, sorry.

That's the kind of abuse I'm afraid I might commit, given my recent conduct.
See ya later, and feel free to ping me at any time with any additional comments.

Like I said, any contribution is valuable. Just get this thing with becoming a moderator out of the back of your head. It's not helping at this point, and your actions as a "normal" user are just as helpful.
See you!
