Thanks Journeyman..

@ekaj A couple months ago I got back into soccer after about 5 years. 3rd game of the season and I hyper extended my left knee, fracturing my Tibia and tearing of the ACL.
Who needs exercise anyway?!

@ekaj ADwhat?

I think ADT
but then when they transferred me to their.. associate or whatever, they called it alliance security
adp is a crappy software company that does printing for checks and crap
@MichaelFrank That's terrible :/

It's okay. I'm almost fully recovered now. :P

1:13 AM
@ekaj Meh. Clearly you should have been more careful :p

1:51 AM
Starting to hurt a good bit =p

3:01 AM
Ugh... Service desk are setting cases to closed before escalating them to our team...
We do all the work, but the close doesn't count towards our stats.

@JourneymanGeek there is more than one reason to not compress, it should be a simple users choice as it has been for the last decade. If I have storage space over battery life, or fan noise . if i am running progrms pulling 100% cpu to do work, and decompr4essing would get in the way of that. If they wanted to solution the Install size thing, Allow for MS cruft removal, cleanly and fully and properly with full and proper re-install as needed.

@Psycogeek: some forms of decompression are very low impact
and you won't be accessing all the files all the time. This is reducing the size of the base install and more importantly killing off restore partitions.

And exes and dlls are still like 50% size compressable things, even with a lightweight alogrythm. I have played with all manners of compressing programs for decades, always choose not to after it all.
If the machine starts deciding for us :-PPPP it is going to do it wrong again, as it often does when deciding for us.

and this is more for systems with super limited space anyway, like netbooks.

3:43 AM
@Bob University and college athletics mostly. Around this time in the US it's basketball finals

I feel it is the wrong solution for the problem. We had 200M fully operational (with most programs) Xp systems that were fast as heck, and zero trash, by simple Work adjusting what they more or less locked down. To PIG pile the system still, Then solution it by taxing the hardware , it is lasy :-) dumping the job off on others.

Bob
Ah.
> Please be advise that we closed the international shipping for the chargers for the following reason:

1. The charger is US plug, we receive a lot of complaints from different places in the world about the plug as they are not able to use it.
2. Most important thing for us is customer service and experience. As we only have our warehouse now in the US, therefore, our customer service can only cover very limited areas as well.
3. The high shipping fee and the frequent package lost in transit.
... ... ...
If someone can't figure out a simple adapter, they have other issues. This isn't exactly great customer experience when they can't easily get the products, though I concede the support point. High shipping fee? I should point this guy to the parcel forwarders' fees -_-

lol
And american plugs are wimpy

Bob
Seriously, proper Amazon international shipping is cheap and tracked. It's cheaper than local parcel mail!
@JourneymanGeek I really find that to be a weak reason. Oh, look, some idiots can't figure out a simple passive adapter, and you don't bother with a FAQ or even a copy-pasted support response... so you stop selling internationally? Wow.
Travel plugs aren't exactly rocket science...

@Bob: It probably is.. but in my experience adaptors don't always work right. My amp has an american plug, and cause its a bit bulky, it won't sit right horizontal. Also, yeah, there's probably other issues, and they're being lazy,.

Bob
3:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek Eh, these chargers (at least the higher-current ones) have a standard IEC connector and cable. The US plug end is very small - bulkiness isn't an issue.

@Bob: I have a adaptor that looks kinda like [____]=
(also, I like mocking power plugs ;p)

Bob
Even then, a bulky one would have issues without an adapter, and somehow they still manage to sell those.

also, using a forwarder would fix that, I guess?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Costs approx 5x more.
$10 vs $50

4:07 AM
ahh k

4:28 AM
ooh. We're doing <redacted>

Bob
-_-

(actually, looks like we're involved in a good chunk of the current batch of blockbusters ;p

4:44 AM
guise i went to the site selling testosterone pills that was advertised in one of the posts and im growing moobs now

4:54 AM
Oh noes!

4 hours later…
Bob
8:57 AM
So.
My Android contact list spontaneously decided to take ~5-10 secs to load.
Apparently I have 14k "not assigned" contacts it auto-imported from gmail at some point
there's so many I can't even load the list to look at them
2500 are from the same person...
just merged in the gmail interface
wtf is going on here
stupid thing seems to have created one contact for every email I've received

Bob
that is so broken
> Gmail automatically adds addresses to your Contacts list each time you use the Reply, Reply to all, or Forward functions to send mail to addresses that don't already exist in your Contacts list. Each time you mark a message as Not Spam, your Contacts list is also automatically updated so that future messages from that sender are received in your inbox.
oh god dammit

@Bob What's bad about that?

...yea

Bob
9:02 AM
I have no idea what's going on now.
I've merged the same 2500 contacts twice
contact count has gone down to ~9.5k
but the duplicates are still there!
oh, now it's finding other duplicates too
...soooo.... there's so many it's apparently broken gmail
great.
this is after deleting half a dozen duplicate groups and merging about 7k contacts
I don't even use gmail contacts!
ok, third go found another 2.5k from the same person
apparently it can't find more than 2.5k duplicates in a row from one person
4th one
5th
> Failed to merge your contacts:
welp.
and no reason after the colon either
there, down to 46 after the duplicate purge -_-

it seems I may have partial hearing loss... and here I was thinking I was just merely ignoring my students and colleagues...

9:17 AM
Could be both

i think it might be both indeed
lol... the boss starting fretting that I would not be able to do my duties if I have partial hearing loss.... it's partial, not total

@Hennes What's so bad about those WPS?
@BenRichards Can you put it on indefinite bandwidth stream testing? Like endless speed test? Do you know if such websites exist that allow you this?
@JourneymanGeek Familiar with TestMy.net?

Hmm I need Australian IP to participate in forum but I don't have paid proxy account. I use ZenMate but they do not offer IP in this country...
I hate proxy websites due to spam and malware etc.

Bob
9:42 AM
@Boris_yo I'd offer, but my connection really is too slow to act as a proxy for anyone else.
Also don't ahve any Aus VPSes... they're a tad expensive :\

9:57 AM
@Bob Are you familiar with this one? i2pproject.net/en
I wonder if I can switch IP there to Australian.

10:54 AM
Good morning!

¡woof!

2 hours later…
12:41 PM
hii

did someone forget to walk you? you're acting like a feral canine this morning
I notice when you are in distress you resort to your canine roots

lol
I'm fine
(well, I was a little distracted ;p)

tomorrow I have a phone meeting and an online presentation with folks from India, and they scheduled it "conveniently" for 7 AM local time... which is a comfortable 5 PM IST

lol
that's annoying
what time do you normally start work?

12:49 PM
no earlier than 9 AM, usually 10

eh. We work 10 to (WHY ARE YOU GUYS STILL HERE, ITS 7, GO HOOOOOME)

here's the deal:
Boss's boss goes on a panic saying "WE NEED SOFTWARE THAT DOES X!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Boss tells his boss, "Oh! I know some guys in Company-India that make something like that!"
Boss's boss: "Great! Can we try it? Get a demo?"
Other part of Company-US interjects, "Uh, we already have great in-house software that does X, developed and tested, ready to go; here, have a demo!"
Boss's boss: "Great! So since we have two separate solutions that do the same thing, logically we need to INTEGRATE THEM TOGETHER!"

I might have gone in at 7 tommorrow (we have a contractor coming in) but my boss prefers someone else do it. Lack of experience sucks
@allquixotic: ow

it'd be like if a middle manager finds out that two separate divisions of your company both make pickup trucks, then declares that they will make a new vehicle that consists of one model of pickup truck stacked on top of the other and welded to it

;p
upside down too!
so australians can drive it.

12:54 PM
however, Boss is extremely buddy-buddy with Company-India team, even though the software is terrible... so far, based on our evaluations of both software packages, the Company-US solution is far better suited, and can do everything we need on its own

but the Company-India team's software is riddled with weird bugs and UI head-scratchers
Boss thinks it's wonderous and magical though

and it dosen't quite do the needful?

well, it probably does, but there's some janky way of doing it that we can't suss out after looking at it for ~10 hours
which is why we have a second demo of it tomorrow
despite the fact that the first one was almost useless to us

ahh
That's pretty annoying
(One 'nice' thing about our industry, there's only a handful of companies that make software for it)
and in most cases, there's someone in our company with a direct line to someone in their company to ask them stuff

12:57 PM
heh... I thought the Indians who've moved to the US and lived here for a while had a heavy accent? !!no... theirs are perfectly fine... the Indians still living in India have accents so heavy I can only make out every third or fourth word

rofl
yeah
A lot of vfx guys are from there
work is odd accent wise ;p
We have indians, brits, and french.

no Chinese?

suprisingly few
the only mainland chinese I know of works in tech ;p
Oh, there's locals of course

we have first-generation immigrants from every continent except Antarctica where I work, and within Asia we have people from basically every major direction - north Asia, south Asia, east Asia, west Asia

Well, I was born here.
;p

1:02 PM
we have fewer folks from Europe, but they're there

Well, we're a british company

so the core of the company is british. But we merged with an indian company

mine is a multinational company, but somehow the branch in India is its own separate company that has some kind of deep, all-encompassing agreement with ours

and for some reason there's a ton of indian guys doing vfx (which is odd, cause india dosen't have much good vfx in movies)

1:03 PM
not sure why that is, since we have offices in many other countries within the main company

(I work for double negative, who merged with prime focus. Wierdly, we do different things so, it kinda works out)
We might have sort of acquired them, I'm not sure ;p

I work for this guy ;p

weirdest chin I've ever seen

Same thing I noticed ;p

ugh.
I see all the scary words from management classes ;p

LOL, typical...

1 hour later…
2:16 PM
Yay, I just finished migrating all our GitHub issues and Trello boards to YouTrack :D

YouTrack? keeping track of everything with video?

@allquixotic You might want to tell your boss that that's not where one wears a G-string.

I really like it. The way you can file issues is much better suited for us than working with GitHub issues and the agile boards YouTrack has suit us much better than Trello, especially since both features are integrated with each other

@terdon that's not my boss; that's the CEO :P
I haven't met him and probably never will

2:24 PM
@allquixotic Well, in case you ever do meet him, be sure to leave the right impression by making an inappropriate remark about his face

"I've always thought that a leader should have a strong chin. He has no chin, and his vice president has several. This to me is not a good combination."

So, SE looked into the SUPT proposal and said !!no

I'm not hugely surprised

@JourneymanGeek Dilbert?
that sounds very Dilbert-esque

naw
Ivanova ;p

2:39 PM
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hilarious

Its funny, I haven't watched b5 in years
and I can quote it still
probably has binge watched the show 3,4 times

I've only binge watched it once

@ThatBrazilianGuy :(

;p
Lets see.
Once when I first got my paws on the whole series
then another time for kicks
and 2 more times when I was down in the dumps and needed a little cheering up ;p

Bob
Ah, programming competitions...
First submission: "Memory Limit Exceeded"
Second submission after 10 minutes of fruitlessly trying to figure out wtf it's complaining about: "Accepted"
Hint: it's a really really simple program that uses exactly 5 32-bit primitive int variables, with zero explicit heap allocation
I was so confused when it told me I was using too much memory -_-

2:54 PM
That reminds me, I should prepare for Google Code Jam

3:11 PM
Blah my buyvm vps is down

bwahahahaha
sorry, I took some strange pleasure in doing that ;D

@allquixotic and I thought that was real :|

3:26 PM
@HackToHell not quite; you can find the original here

Neat
Didn't know Windows 10 has native console transparency support :D

Bob
@OliverSalzburg That was big news about 4 months ago :P
There's a uservoice page for further console suggestions

there -- I used inspect element to edit the text instead of gimp like my first ham-handed attempt

@Bob The last time I used 10 was on the day they made the preview available ;D
@allquixotic You have too much free time! :D

@allquixotic figured as much ;p

3:40 PM
So they release a preview of Office 2016, but don't even replace 2013 with 2016 on the Outlook welcome screen :\
Looks pretty sweet though

there's a difference between "preview" and "quickly release something to make it look like we have been busy for the last 3 years"
or something like that...
Stupid Outlook issue... or possibly I'm using it wrong - I have hundreds of folders, and, I put a bunch of emails in one and I can't remember where... They come up when I do an "all item search", but, it doesn't show which folder...
I know that if I open an actual find window and do it that way, folder is an option, but, is there an easier way/any way to see it in the preview window?

Bob
Right click on the result?

I liked my Windows 10 preview, made the Surface Pro actually usable

@WilliamHilsum Search in "all outlook elements"

@OliverSalzburg yeah, when I do that, I find the email... but not the folder it is in... sorry if I wasn't clear

3:50 PM
@WilliamHilsum Huh, Outlook doesn't show the folder name when I search the mailbox, but it does show the folder when I search in all outlook items

oh... let me check again

I also noticed that it sometimes shows the folder and sometimes not. I never saw a pattern though

I don't seem to be able to see folders on my search, even when I do the all outlook items :/

@WilliamHilsum When I configure the visible columns, I have "in folder" in the email columns

thanks! Lol, it has made the columns look ugly now... gone from 2 lines to 5... but, at least I see it!
Thanks! :)

4:19 PM
windows keeps deleting the folder as well as the html file
I only have he folder selected!
is there a way ti make it behave like it should

5:01 PM
@snipe Copy the contents of the .html to another file ;P

5:17 PM
@snipe Which folder? Which file? Context pls

5:41 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Sounds like a saved website

6:14 PM
Has anyone got the tools to scan a Windows crash dump installed?
Oh, it's done a full memory dump. No way I'm posting that on the interwebz
I'm gonna assume it was the water in the keyboard (poured there by the cat) that caused the bluescreen then.

You mean BlueScreenView?

6:30 PM
Don't think bluescreenview will cut it, sounds like it only does minidumps, what I've got is a 700MB Memory.dmp
Installed the windows debugging tool
Apparently a hard disk vanished when it wasn't expecting it, which is odd considering it managed to write the memory dump...

I thought it would?

I wasn't sure, but I've got WinDbg now...
It claims FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: 0x7a_c00000c0_partmgr!PmSurpriseRemoval
my suspicion is that the wet keyboard made the entire USB system shit itself and took down something that windows didn't like being taken down.
Current score is Cat: 1, Human: 0
I kinda like that windows has a PmSurpriseRemoval
Like it throws out party poppers as if it's a surprise birthday party just before clutching its chest and keeling over and dying...

7:01 PM
@Boris_yo I don't know of any websites that will do this but I'll look into it. Why?

7:11 PM
@Boris_yo I think I can actually use the iperf tool to do this. Haven't used it much so I kind of forgot about it until just now.
@Boris_yo iperf.fr

8:11 PM
@allquixotic So turns out I have a 128GB 850 PRO. Since I forgot to reply to you earlier on in the week.

8:21 PM
@MichaelFrank aw :P

9:03 PM
Oh snap, I lost my days O___O

@snipe wget. Don't ask me how to use it, it's got the ability to though.

9:46 PM
:D

@snipe how into programming are you? If you want to navigate websites and scrape, phantomjs will do it

I only know a tiny bit of html
and C / batch
maybe it would be easier to use the tool I have but to block the sites using a seperate tool

I guess it depends on how much you want to do then.
Give that a shot.

I tried a chrome extention called site block but the scraper extention still could access the page
they were both using chrome
maybe I could try editing hosts.txt
I dont know if that applies to IE or the in general though
I know internet options can do it but thats IE again

Happy Saint Patrick's Day :)

Saint Who?

!!/tell 20603808 wiki Saint Patrick's Day

@DragonLord Command saint does not exist. (note that /tell works on commands, it's not an echo.)
Saint Patrick's Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick (Irish: Lá Fhéile Pádraig, "the Day of the Festival of Patrick"), is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (c. AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion (especially the Church of Ireland), the Eastern Orthodox Church, and Lutheran Church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates...
