3v0
12:28 AM
finally some luck!

1:01 AM
@Bob the jury is out, but limited experiments have so far revealed that it being TSMC as opposed to Sammy is good, despite the die size difference. Could be something about the TSMC process that is better.

3v0
one of my photos is corrupted again
how the FUCK !!!

Bob
Windows 8;1 upgrade: "don't worry, you'll be prompted when a restart is required"
later..: "you have 15 mins before automatic restart. in the middle of something? TOO BAD"
... I detest automatic restarts

3v0
8.1 UI is too focused on tablets and such
even with classic shell

Bob
1:16 AM
that has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand

3v0
yes

@3v0 wut?
!!wat

3v0
wheres the menu bars gone in 8.1
wheres the standard buttons bar wheres the explorer bars

If you expected the GUI remain the same, you shouldn't have updated to a different version of Windows. It was made pretty damn clear what it would function like before they released it.

3v0
I didnt upgrade to it
I dont know why they changed it when it worked perfectly fine

Bob
1:19 AM
shrug I rather like how UIs have moved to icon-with-text
tiny-obscure-icon was terrible

3v0
the icons are even more tiny in 8.1

Bob
worse still when coupled with higher DPI displays
If you find icons in 8 even more tiny, something else is wrong.

3v0
compared to xp they are

Bob
Not at all.

3v0
instead of the standard buttons bar theres a load of tiny icons
and its even worse in MS word

Bob
1:21 AM
...
There are no icons any smaller than they were previously.

The Ribbon in Office is really good. I don't have hundreds of tiny icons to search through to find what I'm looking for...

Bob
Your "buttons bar" exemplifies the now-antipattern of a bar full of tiny icons.

3v0
but there IS hundreds of tiny icons

Bob
Nup.
Important functionality gets nice big icons.

3v0

Bob
1:23 AM
Less important stays with smaller + text.
Little-used stays with smaller w/o text

3v0
minimize, etc is a tiny bit smaller but you can make them as big as you want in XP
you cant in 8.1
because advanced appearance settings is gone in display properties
I can make all this whatever size I like

Bob
Pretty much the definition of tiny icons =>

3v0
they make sense though

Bob
sigh
They "make sense" only because you've been trained to become used to it over many years.
To a new user, it's about the most obscure crap possible.

3v0
yeah ms office of new hides all this under one big office icon
including where the file menu would normally be
even the menu bar is now a bunch of tiny icons instead of a menu
I still find it hard finding the save button

Bob
1:27 AM
@3v0 That's not new.
That's 8 years old.
2007 was basically a trial run of the ribbon interface
2010 got it right

3v0
since vista right

Bob
Also, the save button is added to the quick access bar by default.

@Bob Not to mention Ctrl + s still works.

3v0
those are tiny icons on the titlebar
well yes

Bob
@3v0 ...pretty sure they're exactly the same size as the icons in the old toolbars.

3v0
1:30 AM
I guess well never agree

Custom Tabs = <3

3v0
thats outlook right

Correct.

Bob
@MichaelFrank I also like the extension support.

3v0
id rather have it seperate instead of on the titlebar as the quick access ribbon

Bob
1:32 AM
Pretty easy to build an extension in .NET
And much nicer than VBA

3v0
my eyes wernt what they used to be

@Bob As a non-dev, I'll take your word for it. :P

3v0
I dont like the wordpad quick access bar its crammed in one corner and holds too many options

Bob
@MichaelFrank Having exposure to VBA is enough :P
Huh, people actually use wordpad?
I mean apart from viewing *nix-line-ending files on a server...

3v0
come on many people do

1:36 AM
@3v0 Hmm... not really?

Bob
I'll take your word for it.

3v0
in XP practically everything is resizeable with registry or display properties - appearance/vistual effects

Or maybe just by accident.
@3v0 The registry is not for playing though. If you can only change it from there, it's not really a user setting.

3v0
it doesnt matter anyway its still badly designed IMO
why is it not for playing through
I do it all the time
Ive seldom had any issues

Seldom?

3v0
1:41 AM
very rarley
I have test VMs anyhow

1:59 AM
Ya know what the biggest travesty with the newly designed Office suite is (according to my wife)? A severe lack of good Word Art.

@3v0 Yup. She thinks those are cool. -_-

@MichaelFrank: Wordart is cool. If 10<age<60.
@MichaelFrank about that wierd windows grid question - I'm pretty sure software is involved
There's not really enough information though. Photographs of a screen are not cool.

@JourneymanGeek Yea, could be something like Desktop Fusion... Would have to test at home.
@JourneymanGeek However, that's what I get when I side by side.
I'll delete that, cause info whoopsie. D:

2:18 AM
My bad
Its doing it on mine too. I just didn't have enough windows

Did you clean up my comment? D:

Yeah
It was obsolete, and I made a mistake
though
This happened
(the red box is the actual screen size. The hexchat window got stuck outside it. Might be cause of the other higher res screen to the right.)

Yea, the first time I tried it they were all different sizes. But that may have been the xenapp programs I had open.

2:38 AM
yeah, I tested it with multiple copies windows of FF and they were even

Yay, VNC works. It's tunneled over SSH for security.
Took a bit of a convoluted setup, though.
Wrote a shell script to make it a bit easier to start up and shut down.

3v0
3:27 AM
can you have the same user with the same SID on the same subnet but on two PC's

@3v0 Sure, that's kinda how roaming profiles work.

3v0
I got that to work after hours of fiddling
it was cool though
I was wondering if you can type a logon path in the windows logon box like pc2\Administrator instead of local pc\administrator
but without active directory
roaming profile requires shared folders
windows can only seem to see one workgroup at a time

Q: Should question owners be able to down vote on answers?

codeSwift4LifeI have had a few questions with not so good answers. Could it be possible that question askers can down vote (or up vote) on answers to their questions, without rep requirements? Also, about up voting, if an answer is partially helpful or useful, we should be able to express that it worked. Is ...

3v0
4:15 AM
YES I got both workgroups to show up
you gott have dynamic IP's on both pc's
they can both ping each other but only one sees both workgroups so far

3v0
4:29 AM
it must be cause one VM is sp2 not sp3
oh god its still doing it even after cloning the SP3 VM

3v0
5:00 AM
OMFG it finally decided to work after basically waiting staring into space for 10minutes

5:28 AM
Seems these days many apps require SMS confirmation for spamming verifying your profile. I do no longer want to use my personal number for this and am looking for different way to verify. Anyone knows if on-the-go type of SIM cards will do the job?

Q: Screen turns black if charging cell phone is put on top of tower

tonydoIf I place my charging cell phone on top of my tower (metal) my computer screen turns black either directly or after a few seconds. If I remove the phone the screen turns on again, but hangs sometimes and I need to reboot then. The phone is plugged into a plug right next to the plugs of tower and...

Grounding problem?

Bob
6:01 AM
> According to MYOB termination code 1100 means a problem between MYOB and the display driver.
O_O
Accounting software crashing because of a display driver?
What?!

Clearly it needs to mind its own business.

3v0
this just logs on locally MICHEAL

@DragonLord: plausibly
its just wierd tho

6:42 AM
@allquixotic: bad news considering that your only Internet service is Verizon 4G LTE: theverge.com/2015/10/8/9478093/…
Your phone bill will go up by $20 starting November.

6:56 AM
Morning
@rlemon That's probably because this is my main room ;D

Bob

o0
Thats a late PIV or c2d era or later heatsink tho definately older than IB... and a standard fan jerry rigged to it?

Bob
Yes, that is a motherboard with no expansion slots.
Dammit, HP.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...it's an i3-3xxx

6:59 AM
@Bob: yeah, rounded heatsink + thickness ._.
oh...
almost there then ;p
also... its no no expansion slots.

Bob
You'll notice there's only a single VGA out too.

Its They have the pads and never soldered them on o0
and er... is that a mini tower case?

Bob
And only USB 2.0 despite having an Ivy CPU

with expansion slot covers and...
You mean 2.0?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Isn't that what I said? :P

7:00 AM
no?
(the true horror is sinking in)

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Best part? I get to be the one to figure out how to get dual-display on these.

And i complained about dell cheaping out on drive bays!
@Bob: magic

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Sounds close enough!

or soldering on PCIe slots... and hoping it works
and since its usb 2.0, USB video out is gonna suck even worse.

Bob
USB 2.0 DL-160-based HP video card (which, btw, has the same model number as its more capable DL-165-based cousin) only works up to 1680x1050.
@JourneymanGeek I'm seriously considering that now.
@JourneymanGeek Spent a couple hours trying that.
1680x1060 upscaled to 1920x1080 hurts the eyes.

7:02 AM
@Bob: surface mount by the looks of things so...
non trivial

Bob
Not to mention the damn thing flickers off now and then.

seriously, that's hide under the bed level scary ._.

Bob
HP: so concerned with whether they could [save 10c on PCIe slots] that they never stopped to think if they should

and went waaay too far
What's even the point?

Bob
Yes, I butchered that line.
@JourneymanGeek ...dunno.

7:04 AM
might as well just chuck a mobile motherboard into a SFF box

Bob
$$$, presumably

oh. So... they cheap out by using the same motherboard as a more capable model, just not solder in the PCIe slots...
then stick it in the same sort of case for economies of scale and...
NO WONDER THEY ARE HAVING TROUBLE....
I also see 2 unpopulated sata ports
actually?
I think they just took a board, started unsoldering things till it broke, soldered the last component back in, and called it good

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't be surprised!

I see unpopulated IC pads, a dozen capasitors...
there's a USB 2.0 header. I think those would be a few cents.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm pretty sure I see a USB 3.0 header...

7:10 AM
I was looking for one
got distracted

Bob
@JourneymanGeek The one next to the audio ports on the back.

I'm pretty sure they knocked a ton of stuff off of the rear cluster too
That might be a place to solder an actual USB 3.0 oirt

Bob
That PCIe x16 slot is labelled, btw.

yeah
so's everything.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Yea, I see a DVI label.

7:12 AM
... missing surface mount caps/resistors too...
cause its worth reprogramming your pick and place machines to shave a few cents off the BOM

Bob
Just that single freakin' DVI port would've solved my problem.

Yeah
they probably went
"lets start hacking off parts till its completely unusable, then add one more"
and by the time IB came out VGA was clearly obsolete, and DVI was on the cusp of being so.
I'd like to know
What illicit substance was everyone involved on smoking when these decisions were made....

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Probably IC dust, what with all the hacking. And a good amount of lead.

lead poisoning explains a lot

7:35 AM

8:13 AM
Could anyone help me?
i cant RDP i cant poweredge and i cant print
but i can go on google chrome\

8:30 AM
hm
do you have a proxy set up?
and what does "poweredge" mean? To me, its a brand of dell servers

i dont use a proxy
and i ment edge internet explorer
Microsoft Edge*
im just in my buisness evironment
everything worked fine before

hm
Well, edge and RDP both use the system wide proxy settings
chrome does its own thing iirc
printing might be an unrelated issue

amibehindaproxy.com says: There is a proxyserver active on your internet connection!
but i think i only using this proxy to go outside of my 192.168 ?

the proxy may be misconfigured?

on my laptop itself?

8:44 AM
Might want to talk to your sysadmin about that.

i more think its a DNS problem

Plausibly or the proxy server's spazzing at your system

we dont have a sysadmin

or whoever manages everything

we have an own dns server inside our network
we only use the proxy to go outside
because only I have to problem

8:45 AM
who maintains the DNS server and proxy?

noone really does

1november is the sysadmin hired
:/

What happens if it breaks?
so, here's the thing
hmm
does chrome do its own DNS thing?

yes i think so
i tried flush my dns cache, didnt help

8:47 AM
I'm still thinking its a misconfigured proxy

on my own laptop, right?

Is it feasible to purchase SIM card with US number with me being in Israel?

yup
but buuuut the person who'd know the correct settings or what to kick would be your sysadmin ;p

cant i just copy it from another pc?

In theory yes
assuming there's settings there.
or they might be able to pull why your PC is failing off the firewall appliance, if you have one.

8:49 AM
i have no idea where to look for my proxy settings, is it in the ethernet properties? where u can change the ipv4 add
we have a firewall server

yeaaah
it should be in..
lemme check
erm
'change proxy settings' in windows 10

i have windows 10 yes

yeah, it was different in 7 and 8
(and I found this by typing "change proxy settings in the start menu. Universal search is glorious)

computer is so slow searching for this -.-

>_>
I have 16gb of ram and an ssd so... ;p

8:52 AM
4bg and hhd -.-
manual proxy setup if off

is automatic on? Do you have another system to compare settings?

automatically detect setting sis on

hmm, what happens when you turn it off?

nothing much
lemme start a mst
nothing helped
maybe u can look thru teamviewer if u want

8:57 AM
no problem
i literly cant connect to any system on my own domain
even when i was home i couldnt connect to the terminal server
i tried wifi and cable
i uninstalled drivers
nothing helped

1 hour later…
10:01 AM
!!baroo

10:35 AM
@user3201911 Have you tried netsh winsock reset all?

Hello, I just wanted to try my luck: Does anyone here happen to have a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop which he uses for CAD applications? (I originally posted this as a question superuser.com/questions/984287/…, but I was referred to this chat.)

Heya.
Not as far as I remember, and no one here really does cad

Perhaps another SE site?

There's no real 'hardware' specific site
there may be a cad one, but it might still be a chat topic.

I know, I was just trying to approximate

10:45 AM
specs seem ok, tho lenovo is in a wee bit of the ****list cause of superfish and the other occational dumb things they do.

cad is still in area51

(and I mostly use thinkpads. not powerful machines, but well built)
not too sure about the lenovo ones
(same company, but standards vary somewhat)

11:20 AM
does anybody here know of software that can lower vcore of cpu from within windows?

@barlop cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml maybe? "Basic RMClock version is available free of charge for personal non-commercial use and for non-profit organizations. No registration or activation is required. "
I've never used it but it was the first one Gargle returned.

thanks i'll give it a try

11:43 AM

It seems difficult to find a 3.5" internal SATA SSD on amazon.. Do people tend to get 2.5" ones and a 2.5"-3.5" bay adapter?

12:00 PM
o0
"Difficult" is not the word
it would be impossible
and yes, they would
or already have convertable bays
all Sata SSDs on the consumer market are laptop style 2.5 inch

12:14 PM
Probably NSFW boingboing.net/2015/10/09/unicorn-poop-and-squatty-potti.html since it involves unicorn poop and might cause you to burst out laughing.

12:44 PM
@DavidPostill thanks this worked for me!

@user3201911 Great. I will post as an answer ;)
Oh. I see you did already. Never mind :)

12:58 PM
woof. Two days left of housesitting, and driving the human nuts by demanding walks and food and wierd times.

1:18 PM
pet peeve
People from the indian subcontinent calling their cases 'cabinets'

1:30 PM
@JourneymanGeek Cases? You mean Suitcases?

1:43 PM
._.
Computer cases ;p

2:14 PM
@barlop Aye. No need to make most SSDs bigger than 2.5 inch, and having only one form factor for your drive is an advantage for the manufacturer, for sales points (fewer types of stock) and no disadvantage to the user
Esp. since you can skip the 3.5 to 2.5 bracket with a very light and not-moving disk

@JourneymanGeek They were cabinets in the old days of mainframes ... ;)

@DavidPostill: Back when policemen wore short pants ._.
@Hennes: to be more precise they're typically also 7mm thick rather than full thickness

2:32 PM
Did you try another cable or useing ... oh wait. Already getting the same in a comment.
Darmn fast dogs. :)

lol
I just did something totally mod abusy.
One of the non answers was really a comment to two posts
so I converted it to a comment, edited, undeleted, edited, and converted it to another comment.
@Hennes: annd... its the cable
posted a preliminary answer pending more information ;p

MST on DP should be great.

._.
SST or bust!

Though I have no direct experience with it yet

(you lose half the refresh rate for MST)

1 hour later…
o.o

3v0
4:23 PM
is it worth putting win7 on the SSD and copying my data from the HDD
its currently on the HDD
for speed difference
ive had 7 less than a year but it is probably full of bits of crap
left over files and registry data
I wonder if POSREADY 2009 has better hardware support than XP
I guess theres only one way to find out
like for newer hardware

4:48 PM
@3v0 TBH, I am not sure what you intend to do

3v0
peanut butter

for better performance you should keep the "installed stuff" on the SSD
while storing documents & media files on the HDD

3v0
I guess but the ssd is 200gb so why not
the hdd is 1TB
it seems a little risky having my docs on a seperate drive but its hard to explain why

try .. it should be entertaining

3v0
I dont wanna lose my docs
I got likw 2000 scren shots I dont wanna lose, and thousands of songs

4:51 PM
where does the "separate drive" become important?

3v0
it used to have windows 10 beta (NEVER AGAIN)
and my data, but I copied it to the other drive and just tossed the ssd on the shelf

do you think that your DOC files will wanish, if they fail to detect MsWord on the same drive?

3v0
then I decided after a few months to wipe it and plug it back in
its just some docs need to be on the same drive as certani apps
and some docs dont have to

@3v0 please, name one

3v0
aptana studio docs

4:53 PM
wrong
you can set your workspace location wherever you want (it's in the config)

3v0
no it is true
you can probably change the directory but I dont know how and cba
the workspace folder is in my docs on the HDD right now

4 mins ago, by 3v0
it seems a little risky having my docs on a seperate drive but its hard to explain why
remember, you are trying to defend this statement

3v0
I am
this backs that up

how "I don't know how to configure Aptana" has any impact on storage-related risks?

3v0
because the app will give an error when I load it up that it cannot find the workspace folder

4:57 PM
then point it to the location where workspace is
that's how configuration works

3v0
I would

ya know what .. I am at the limit of my tolerance
off to the ignore list

5:12 PM
XD

5:35 PM
so quiet today
*drums up some noise*

*meow*
@JourneymanGeek To play devil's advocate here, keep in mind that every last penny counts. The margins for PCs are virtually nonexistent these days.
Feb 19 at 13:19, by DragonLord
The cost pressure is unbelievable on mainstream laptops
The case here is a desktop, but the same applies.
