12:13 AM
wifi tends to suck ;p
"router pc" slightly scares me as well - decent routers use hardware for stuff general purpose PCs do less well

...if only i could find decent routers :P. the current one only works decently after having flashed openwrt on it, before that it had several issues
by "current one" i mean the one that is in charge of wifi - TP Link WR740N
(currently having too much fun with graphviz)

;p
I'm kinda fond of asus, or my old WRT54G
I might end up getting stuck with a dlink though :/

12:37 AM
man, I just can't catch a break today
idiot teammates every single goddamn game

heh... I had a couple games last night like that.
Also had a Kensu that went 31-6 against us. -_-
Reported him as incorrect matchmaking, he was well out of our skill range.

12:58 AM
okay i think i'm done playing with graphviz

chuckles
Thats a motley array of gear, I approve

:D

are the latency spikes just with the wireless part of the network?

nope, in fact i experience those mostly from the irssi in carl0s

also, is the bridging wireless?
ahh, then we can rule out channel contention (THE BANE OF MY EXISTANCE!)
A PII is really old. I wonder if some part of your hardware is failing. Discrete network card(s)?

1:02 AM
what do you mean by "is the bridging wireless"? openwrt and carl0s are connected through ethernet, but they share the same IP space

ahh, ok
SLIGHTLY similar setup to what I use

carl0s doesn't have a discrete network card, no

XD. I'm seeing too many potential points of failure
o0 how do you use a system as a router with a single network card?
and did PIIs even come with built in ones?

it's all going to a switch
...right, that's another point of failure that is out of the graph

XD
I wonder if we can start by simplifying the network slightly. Do you have any spare NICs?
We could set it up modem -> carlos -> switch -> everything else.
then if there's latency at carlos, we can rule out the rest of the network

1:05 AM
a few shitty 10mbit pci cards, or alternatively i could use the spare integrated ethernet card in bolsa

o0
... dude, those belong in a musium. >_>

i could also go buy a decent pci card for a few bucks :P

my crappy spare ethernet cards are fast ethernet

oh yeah, i'm surprised the carl0s ethernet is 100mbit. bleeding edge tech for those times!

oh, that sounds about right

1:08 AM
it's this beast, btw dump.dequis.org/c9oLf.jpg

o0
You take good care of your hardware ;p

nah actually i got it for really cheap a few years ago - they had tons of these compaq and i thought it would be a good idea to use it as """router"""

i've got a raspberry pi that should replace it, but i don't know what to do with the 160gb IDE disk that is holding my torrents right now

1:11 AM
could also move the network stuff to the openwrt, but i really don't trust it

Raspi is probably slower

:D

I have mine set up as a nas for backups
I USED to run btsync and torrents on it
(pretty nice setup actually, 128mb card for boot, OS is on a external HDD mounted via a powered USB hub using berryboot)
and lol. I'd suggest new hardware... but... meh, I like your setup. Its crazy.

hah, thanks
oh, i didn't mention the other issue yet

(granted, the oldest system I have in use is a c2d, the shittiest is an atom, and I have spare core 2 systems)
and I'd replace the atom with say a NUC if I can afford it
other issue?
hmm, I wonder if the latency isn't network

1:14 AM
sometimes, ping from bolsa to futari fails with destination unreachable (icmp reply from bolsa itself, that means it couldn't resolve ARP right?), but ping from carl0s to futari succeeds - and when that succeeds, ping from bolsa to futari starts working again

With a system that old, I'd check the hard drive
ugh. THAT is ... one of those things
(I have no idea about)

hahah
i barely understand ARP magic, but i guess the openwrt bridging is going wrong somehow

if there's a issue its likely at the router end
which leads us back to carlos

goddamn carl0s

;p
I'm guessing here though

1:16 AM
all guesses are appreciated! better than being completely lost

For testing purposes, since I almost trust dd-wrt, I'd replace carlos with your router, and see if you still have those issues

the point about the hard disk is a good one - i mentioned a 160GB ide disk, but the system disk is actually a 2.7gb one from (probably) 1999
it's almost like i'm waiting for it to die one day

(Actually, this is not odd as having your network drop off every time the washing machine is turned on...)
Considering the size, if you REALLY want to keep it running, you might be able to swap it with a smaller old-new stock SATA drive with an adaptor, or an industrial flash unit

hmm, i'm not particularly attached to the hardware, and nuking carl0s is probably a good place to start.

;p
I generally assume that people who keep old hardware have a good reason ;p
Its currently my most obvious point of failure

1:22 AM
well... i do. irssi runs there, and i'm obsessed to keep it logging absolutely everything. moving a few GB of logs to a VPS is going to be effort

well, carlos as an IRSSI box might work better than carlos as a router.

yeah, true
btw, another point of failure i often ignore - my ISP. i ignore it just because "it worked before that reboot in february" but i have no way to verify that

lol
or your modem

right
btw, any ideas on how to reliably monitor improvements on the latency issue? right now i just see that irssi says "Lag: 15 (??)" and goes up to 150 seconds, but that kind of monitoring only works while i'm watching it... and might get subjective interference.

yeah. hmm

1:29 AM
by "subjective interference" i mean i'm terrible at realizing how often it really happens

That might actually be a good question for the site.

\o/

(IE, I have no clue, and I am curious as heck!)

i think it hasn't always behaved the same way - my tests a few months ago showed that pinging 8.8.8.8 had no significant spikes in latency, but the established irc connections and new http connections got stuck for a minute or two.
now i think even ping dies...

"even ping dies" is a notable data point. And I still suspect your router
;p

or that ;p
rofl
thats a horrible question. Asking how to monitor it makes sense

yeah

well, actually I have something worse I once posted >_>

Q: P8Z77V built in ethernet fails with Code 10

Journeyman GeekI have an Asus P8Z77-V motherboard with a built in intel 82579V adaptor. For some odd reason its being detected as 82579LM. I'm running windows 8, and the system worked properly before. Its a known issue but the utility either crashes or tells me there's nothing to do. I've also tried the dos ve...

on the other hand, the question covers the normal way to fix it

Q: How to monitor changes in the frequency of network latency spikes over time?

dequisI'm currently trying to troubleshoot an issue with my network in which I get latency spikes up to 200 seconds (normally around 50 secs) in an apparently random way at apparently random moments of the day. While trying to find what part of my messy network needs to be blamed (outside of the scope...

as usual, it took me way too much time to write that question.

There's a reason I only have just under 100 questions here ;p

Q: Community ads are not displayed, but normal Stack Exchange ads are

DragonLordIt took me a while for me to notice this, but it has come to my attention that community ads are not being displayed anywhere on the main site. This issue occurs regardless of whether or not I am logged in. The ad slot on the right side of the page displays Stack Exchange ads (such as questions ...

HUGE issue. It's been like this for at least the last two or three weeks, and I'm surprised nobody noticed this until now.

3:15 AM
Woo, got the fanatic badge

3:51 AM
I really need to set up my orbweaver for POE
I'm not overfond of the keyboard layout they use and this is the sorta thing it would be perfect for

4:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...you play PoE?! :O
Also, Belkin n52TE > Orbweaver
Actually, that's a lie. Mechanical > rubber domes. :(

lol
precisely
@MichaelFrank: on and off. not for very long
I'm on the seekrit singapore server

@JourneymanGeek Ahh Garena?

no
I didn't want to use that. There's a singaporean server that predates the Garena deal

Ooooh.

4:42 AM
...that's incredibly dodgy.

(amusingly, I was using the europe server before but it stank cause I was on wifi)

That thread is amusing though. So many people obviously didn't read Chris' reply about it still be available, just not visible.

5:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek Anyway, I've been thinking about modding my n52te to use cherry switches

@MichaelFrank: converting from membrane to mechanical?

sounds tricky

7:30 AM
videopro.com.sg/products/… this seems rather tempting
I can afford it, in a month or two, and I could probably replace my current seedbox with it
and its the bigger model so I can use a hard drive

Bob
8:06 AM
@JourneymanGeek That's... actually, you want me to ship you one? :P
It would actually be cheaper for once O_O

@Bob: there's shipping fees, and it seems that expensive everywhere here :/

and I'm not yet sure whether I want one ;p
>_>. THINGS ARE MORE EXPENSIVE HERE. SAY IT ISN'T SO

Bob
@JourneymanGeek That's usually my line :P

I know, right?

Bob
8:08 AM
Though, it is out of stock at Arc :\

Most hardware is cheaper here
lol
Maybe cause its so darned cheap
its within what I'm willing to spend though, course I also need ram
I can probably scrounge a drive
(or put the DOID in it)

Bob
o.O identical but cheaper? arc.com.au/pub.php?pid=55605&p=product
@JourneymanGeek Still cheaper to build an ATX box of similar specs, though
$50 mobo, $50 CPU, $50 case + PSU (cheapie) and you have an equivalent
Add $20 for the wifi

The size is a factor here :p

Bob
the main attraction of a NUC is its size
^
:P
@JourneymanGeek and that's why if I ever get a full x86 machine for a router, it's gonna be a NUC
not much space around the networking equipment here
Ok. Internet here only works when the phone is off hook
wtf.

If I did, I would want a dual Ethernet model

Bob
8:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek eh, a router would only have to manage lan to wan, and my wan connection is nowhere near even 100mbit
a single gbe port can handle it, no problem

Bah. Looking for work seems to be more difficult than the work you're looking for. :I Should add "Really good at editing Excel and Word templates" to my resume.

Best internet we can get here is gigabit :p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...I don't think anyone offers that to residential here.
Even a business line at 1gbit is a pain to find.
@Leathe "Doesn't lose mental faculties at the sight of a computer."

hi

8:28 AM
friends i need a suggestion in taking up an ssl
is it the right place to discuss here

Bob
> HP Beats Special Edition 23" All-In-One Desktop
!!no

Bob
@BlueBerry-vignesh4303 "taking up an ssl"?
please elaborate
do you mean purchasing an ssl cert to use on a website you operate?

@Bob yes friend
i am under confusion so taking it up
verisign,comodo,digicert

@Bob 50 dollars a month ;p
and that includes a US VPN

Bob
8:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek God damnit. Ok, Singapore just got added to my list of possible places to move (@allquixotic)
@JourneymanGeek What's the monthly transfer limit?

...
What is this "monthly transfer limit" you speak of?

Bob
I'm getting shitty constantly disconnecting ADSL2+ (though unlimited) for... something like $70/month
fuck.
@JourneymanGeek ...I just assumed, because just about everything is limited here

(oh, phones have em. 1-2 gb a month I have 12. Old plan ;p )

Bob
Singapore, most of Europe... seems to have decent internet infrastructure and pricing.

well, yeah
the density of population, and having quite an amount of competition helps
we quite literally have two of everything, even fiber optic networks
(our fiber optic 'monopoly' is having trouble keeping up, so Singtel, who indirectly own them, and M1, who're a mobile company are offering to help)

8:51 AM
i have hardware queries anyone can help me out?
how to check independently whether motherboard is working or not?

Bob
@jackopen minimum required is a power supply, cpu and ram

yeah i have those @Bob
but i am not sure whether RAM is functioning or not?
is there any way to check RAM independently?
it is very old RAM may be DDR1
& hence new computers may not support them
so i cant take it outside & test it on my friends' computers

Bob
9:06 AM
@jackopen aside from sticking it in a different mobo, not really

my computer is not working since last year; & i doubt there are multiple components failure.

Bob
it's cheaper to buy an old mobo than any specialised test equipment anyway
basically, the standard way to check is to swap in known working components

do RAM fail frequently?
if RAM is ok, SMPS is ok & i connected SMPS & RAM to MOBO; what should be next check point?
@Bob
searching old equivalent mobo could be another project for me; anyway i am putting that into my worklist.
is there any flow chart available to debug/test computer from bottom to top? from scratch?

Bob
@jackopen unless you're tying to certify a machine, it's much simpler to troubleshoot top down
@jackopen it happens.
@jackopen the CPU

9:22 AM
"it is very old RAM may be DDR1" then its... probably something like 15 years old
there's a point where you want to cut your losses ;p

k8v-mx @Bob asus motherboard

Does it have/is it connected to a buzzer?
does it beep?

@jackopen IMO ram does not ever fail, what is there to fail in it, the controller?

ram does fail
I had an old AMD system that would fry any ram you put into a specific slot ;p

@JourneymanGeek is it possible to connect DDR1 ram to other recent computers(<5 years) to check whether it is working or not?
in my case also there is AMD system
amd athlon

9:25 AM
no

also CPUs of the intel variety are very robust items, as long as the heat sink was not removed quickly, while running. or the chip is not cracked.

IF it boots you can test it
also make sure that the CPU power is plugged in

But Motherboards and power supplies, they all have capacitors which pretty much guarentee failure mostly due to the way they are utalised (much work for them).

@JourneymanGeek there is no display in monitor so i am not sure whether it is booting or not

@jackopen: thats why I asked about the buzzer

9:27 AM
i have tested monitor with other CPU; there is no any problem in monitor; monitor is working fine.
as when i was checking all these components last night; i have isolated all parts; i dont remember the last situation when it worked/didnt worked because my cousin was using this computer.
so i amnot sure whether it buzz or not
can we imagine both conditions?

nope. Imagination is useless in troubleshooting
the buzzer will tell you if the ram is faulty

PC is not in front of me now.
ok i noted it @JourneymanGeek.
if it sounds then there is problem with RAM or motherboard?

also check the 4 pin CPU power connector
oh, you can look it up

is there any particular pattern of voice/sound?

it does mean however chances are the motherboard is fine

9:32 AM
or any kind of voice

depends on the bios. Look it up
it beeps

& if it dont beep; then mobo is faulty?
bios? how to look it?
i have seen mobo last night; there was no any physical damage seen. so i guess 4-pin power connector is ok.
still i will recheck.
@JourneymanGeek
so i put a point like this (one light conclusion): if it sounds beep voice, i have to replace RAM. everything else may be fine.

google up the manual probably

i found manual
checking it
is it possible to check motherboard thoroughly without connecting monitor?
becasue monitor is lying at my uncles home :far away @JourneymanGeek

9:50 AM
@jackopen: beeps!
but troubleshooting without a monitor is too much work

is there any flow chart available to debug/test computer from bottom to top? from scratch? if you have come across any kind of web link/web resources earlier? & top of your head?

via this I found this blog post which mentions an undocumented page

oh thanks; your keyword combinations are getting useful results from google. Thank you & sorry for paining you.

hey guys, Windows seems to be acting up
I have plenty of memory free, but every few seconds the System process is writing several megabytes of... things to the swap files.
any ideas?

@badp It looks like a kernel-mode driver is responsible for this behavior.
Sysinternals Process Monitor might offer some insight.
Have you installed any new devices or updated any drivers recently?
"System" is just a catch-all for everything the NT kernel is doing, including any kernel-mode drivers on the system.

Are you low on memory?

No, not at all

Bob
1:45 PM
@allquixotic whowhat

When did this start happening? Is this recent, or has this issue been around for a while?

Bob
> You'd better look the part, but people will try to speak Chinese to you and you just give them a supercilious.
A supercilious O_O
!!define supercilious

@Bob [supercilious](http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki?curid=undefined) Arrogantly superior; showing contemptuous indifference; haughty.
2013 May 23, Sarah Lyall, "British Leader’s Liberal Turn Sets Off a Rebellion in His Party," New York Times (retrieved 29 May 2013):
Buffeted by criticism of his policy on Europe, battered by rebellion in the ranks over his bill to legalize same-sex marriage and wounded by the perception that he is supercilious, contemptuous and out of touch with mainstream Conservatism, Mr. Cameron earlier this week took the highly unusual step of sending a mass e-mail (or, as

@Bob Google Translate fail :P

Bob
...I have no idea what that sentence is supposed to mean. Give them a what now? O_O

1:46 PM
it's just the same sentence as the previous

Is there something you're doing that is related to the thrashing in any way?

Bob
@allquixotic ...that's pretty messed up

@DragonLord Today

Maybe a program has requested more memory than the system has?

Bob
@badp And what was the last thing you did before it started happening?

1:48 PM
@Bob ...close Bioshock?

Bob
@badp And before that?

this makes me sound like an asshole, but have you rebooted your computer?
2

Bob
@allquixotic Nono, the correct question is "HAVE YOU TRIED TURNING IT OFF AND ON AGAIN?"

well yes of course I have rebooted my computer 17 hours 19 minutes ago.

Bob

1:49 PM
@badp since this started happening? :P
OOH. this tool looks awesome: processhacker.sourceforge.net
better than process explorer maybe
wtf does "Reduce Working Set" do O_O

@badp In the Task Manager detailed view, under Details, right-click on the top bar, click Select Columns, and add Commit Size. It's possible a process requested more memory than it should need.

Bob
> Why is Process Hacker able to kill processes that no other tools can kill?
Process Hacker loads a driver that searches memory for an internal Microsoft kernel function and calls it. This special function is not known to be hooked by any malware and security software.
Interesting.
And slightly dodgy.

@Bob so you're saying Process Hacker was likely developed by a fox?
they're interesting and slightly dodgy, usually

@DragonLord Commit rate is 5.3/10.4 GB
Chrome's rather infamous for stupid high commit rates but nothing seems out of ordinary there
I suppose I'll give it a reboot

@Bob reminds me of that guy who implemented a calculator that could do addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots and Sin(x) all using redstone in minecraft :P
@Bob so the bomb on that level is trying to blow up his incredible computer-within-a-computer creation?

Bob
@allquixotic Heh, that would make for an interesting map.
(but there's no bombsite on this one)

yay, I can finally switch my mobile hotspot over to 5 GHz tonight... new Linksys USB dongle is arriving that can do proper 5 GHz
apparently the Android mobile hotspot app (at least on my phone) can listen on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz... the wireless radio for connecting to other routers is definitely dual band through and through, but it's one-band-at-a-time for hosting an AP.
upgrading from a ~2010-2011 Draft N 2.0 model to a 802.11ac final revision model with dual band and support for the final 802.11n spec as well
new model also seems to be MIMO, though I'm not sure if my phone's wifi is MIMO... I'm guessing not, since that would require more space and antennae
only reason I want MIMO is that I often use the phone's network for communicating between devices on the LAN, and it's not very fast, especially on the 2.4 GHz band
fast enough to saturate the LTE but not nearly fast enough for intra-LAN communications (like Steam streaming)
