@MichaelFrank killing floor I think

Are you sure that's not KF's ToS then? :P

Found it on reddit :P
That's what the title said !

Yea, that would make sense. People on reddit suck at gettings titles correct.

How should we close this?

Q: Recover from sudo strip * in /usr/bin

DemetriI stupidly did sudo strip * in /usr/bin. Now my computer can't boot (X fails to load). What should I do?

The OP reinstalled the system so the issue is no longer relevant and I really doubt there is any solution short of reinstalling anyway. The post is extremely unlikely to help future visitors.
Plus, we should protect @Bob from embarrassing himself in front of his workmates :)

Yea, it sounds like that question from a while ago that went something like "A friend told me to run shred blah blah blah and now my Dad is pissed! What do?"

> This describes a problem that can't be reproduced that seemingly went away on its own or was only relevant to a very specific period of time. It's unlikely to help future readers.

@Braiam yeah, but that close reason is from Unix & Linux. We don't have it here

@terdon custom?

2:46 AM
Migrate it first then. :D

@Braiam don't have that one either :)

I mean... you have close votes
> 21.9k
@terdon !?!??!?!??!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!??!?

Well, yeah, I have close votes. We don't have a non-reproducible close reason on su anymore.
We used to have the too localized which might have fir but that's gone too

can't you write a custom close reason?

That's why I'm asking here, otherwise, I'd have just closed the damn think myself directly

2:47 AM
Just migrate it to U&L then close with @Braiam's reason. :P

@Braiam no, again, not an option here. Hang on, I'll show you a screenshot
@MichaelFrank I'd rather shoot myself in the foot first :)

oh no... terdon account is hacked borked

:)
@Braiam here you go:

@MichaelFrank ow

2:49 AM
@terdon OT > custom -_-

@MichaelFrank Argh, yes, I remember that one. Poor kid learned a valuable lesson
@Braiam yes, that is an option but since the question is on topic, I was looking for a better one.
But you're right, doing it now.

> This question was caused by a problem that can no longer be reproduced. While similar questions may be on-topic here, this one was resolved in a manner unlikely to help future readers.
@terdon ^ there, SO modified

aww I was reading that! >:(

@Braiam I used this:
This question should be closed because the OP has solved the issue by reinstalling (probably the only solution anyway) and so the question is unlikely to help future visitors. — terdon 26 secs ago

that works..

2:52 AM
I like the personal touch :P
Hey, you made a good showing in the elections by the way @Braiam, 3rd is not bad!

I'm such cold hearted person
yeah, well, I knew I wouldn't pass...

+1 hahahah just tried this, it works man hahaha didn't expect it. — Joraid Feb 6 at 16:31
Really?

Heh
@JourneymanGeek is that true by the way? I thought PrntScreen always took screenshots, in all windows versions. Well, post-3.11 anyway, don't think I ever took a screenshot back then

It takes screenshots, but it doesn't automatically save them.

@terdon: it takes and saves a screenshot

2:55 AM
Just copies the area to clipboard.

and its the only way to screenshot in metro

Not if you use Modern Mix by Stardock. ;)
Which is amazing, and made Win8 so much more usable for me.

Q: Can I use the snipping tool to take a screenshot of the windows 8 start screen or modern apps?

Journeyman GeekOne of the tools I've found invaluable in answering questions on SU is the snipping tool. I may on occasion need to take screenshots of part of the start screen or 'modern' apps. I may not want to take a complete screenshot, and while I can use PrtSc and switch back into desktop to paste it, this...

Oh, I have that ;p

@JourneymanGeek ah, OK, it's the saving that's different.

(I mean, these days, I'm all about the gif screenshots)

2:57 AM
...gif screenshots?

lol
licecap
which works perfectly under wine too

I'm kind of flagging this since it recommends using Windows... — Braiam 6 secs ago

@Braiam: I'm not touching that flag, or recommending either way to the other mods. Conflict of interest and all that

such spelling
But yea, that's really cool.

@MichaelFrank: Thats how I normally type ;p

3:02 AM
Oh, so do I. Just amusing when it gets caught on camera.

As I mentioned before, I'm dyslexic. I just take the effort to type like a proper human being ;p

I like how to stole the answer tick 3 years after it was accepted.

@MichaelFrank: That was awesome too ;p
Actually I was going to ask a question, saw that as a possible master dupe, and decided what the hell, lets just share the awesome.

@JourneymanGeek Obviously!

@JourneymanGeek that's what you get on your fancy mechanical keyboards? I thought they were supposed to improve typing efficiency! :P

3:08 AM
@terdon: thats on my laptop

excuses, excuses :)
@Braiam why are you flagging an answer recommending windows software to a question that asked for windows software?

@terdon technically is not recommending a tool, but something inherent of the system

Surely there's no requirement for suggestions to be third party though?

but OP might not be using W8... he just said he's using windows

@Braiam well, technically, that is a tool. I also very much doubt it is inherent in the system. There's probably a little program being run in the background, it just comes with windows by default. Would you flag an answer recommending IE if someone asks for a Windows browser (I'd downvote it as a matter of principle of course :P )?
@Braiam again, no reason to flag, flag as what? Not an answer? But it is. Wrong answers should not be flagged, they should be voted down.
@Braiam for example:

3:17 AM
@terdon I'm not saying is wrong, I'm saying it doesn't recommend a tool ;)

@Braiam: It is, just that its built in, and has no UI ;p

Bob
I or l? I hate bloody sans-serif.

Well, they're your flags, use them as you will but an OS is a tool by any definition.

Bob
UPS here labelled SMT1500l

@Bob we might need a bit more context there

Bob
3:18 AM
that last character could be either an I or l

ah

Bob
@terdon just ranting about sans-serif in general

if you want, let me put it in another perspective:

@Bob probably an I (i) though since the rest of the letters are caps

> Q: I need a plugin to check the the orthography in LibreOffice Writer
> A: You don't need a plug in just press F7 and you get the integrated spellchecker tool

Bob
3:19 AM
@terdon yea, that was my guess
would be nice to not have to guess, though

@Bob yes, and I'd like a pony :)

@Bob what are you reading?

Bob
"sans-serif is more readable" => do you even read?

@Braiam that sounds like a very good answer to me

mono is worse... 1 vs l

Bob
3:20 AM
1l
not too bad
there's fonts where I and l are literally indistinguishable
you could cut and paste on top of each other

@Bob ah, actually that depends. Apparently (says my father the publisher), serif looks better in print and sans looks better on screens. Not sure he knows what he's talking about though in all fairness.

Bob
@terdon that's what a lot of people say

O_O

Bob
but looking at this shit begs to differ:

that one looks better on paper and the other on the screens doesn't mean that you can merge them and get the better of both

Bob
3:22 AM
@Braiam it's entirely subjective
but I say any font where two glyphs representing completely different characters are indistinguishable is a failed font
that one actually makes logical sense
not a "I think this is easier to read"

@Bob sorry, I forgot sarcasm can't be read :/

True, but that is a font issue, not general serif/sans. There are sans fonts that have all glyphs distinguishable
What font is this by the way?

@terdon please, recommend one!

As far as I can tell it's sans except the I

3:25 AM
(btw, do we have a typography.se?)

@Braiam don't think so but you could probably ask on latex for most things
@Braiam this is the one I use:

@Braiam Graphic Design might be the closest choice.

I dunno if that should be counted as sans...

Well, most letters have no serifs, only a couple of the ambiguous ones do

@MichaelFrank Actually, the only letters with serifs are capital i and lower case l (that has a kind of serif, see the screenshot)

and 't'. Also, 'a' has a little tiny serif. :)

t? That has no serif! Nor does a, no more than n. Those are not serifs

@Braiam if its already built in, and you didn't know about the built in tool, wouldn't it be a better answer than installing something additional to solve the problem?

Bob
> What was your favourite place to visit as a child?
> Who is your favourite musician?
what
how
@terdon then that's not full sans :P

3:39 AM
@Bob yeah, but it's a fine compromise. And monospaced!
@MichaelFrank see the image here:
{| style="float: right; margin: 0 1em 1em; border: solid 1px black;" | | Sans-serif font |- | | Serif font |- | | Serif font(red serifs) |} In typography, a serif is a small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol, such as when handwriting is separated into distinct units for a typewriter or typsetter. A typeface with serifs is called a serif typeface (or serifed typeface). A typeface without serifs is called sans serif or sans-serif, from the French sans, meaning “without”. Some typography sources refer to sans-serif typefaces as "Grotesque" (in German "grotesk") o...

Bob
> Who is your favourite musician?
seriously
the fuck kind of security question is that?
oh great

The a in the sans clearly has a little tail, that;s not a serif, it is part of the basic letter glyph as is the tail of the lower case t.

Bob
it asks me the same fucking question if I enter a nonsense username

@Bob: not all sans fonts are crap ._.

@terdon Fair enough. I thought wrong. ^_^
@Bob A poor/good one?

3:43 AM
not totally sans I suspect but i.imgur.com/ULimZE5.png is what I use with lots of text

Bob
> If you have forgotten your username you will need to contact your administrator.

I don't seem to have droid sans mono installed

Bob
I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR

google.com/fonts/specimen/Droid+Sans+Mono this used to be my preferred font.

Bob
T.T

3:44 AM
YOU NEED TO CONTACT YOURSELF!

@Bob lololololol

Bob
why can't they just email me the bloody username

@JourneymanGeek that's quite nice, is it monospaced?

OK, I'll look into it though I have become very fond of my Monaco
@JourneymanGeek thanks

3:50 AM
Nice, but kinda narrow
the b and d is a nice touch
(they arn't mirror images of each other, which makes them more readable)

@JourneymanGeek yes, I guess it helps dyslexics

@terdon: It does
Though, I know a poor sob who is stuck with comic sans for readability

ouch! For READABILITY!?
Damn but I hate that effin' font.

yeah
I must say so, most dyslexic fonts suck
the fatbottomed ones make no sense to me personally
and the one font I would use was never sold seperately, the creator sold it to a dutch publisher who never released or sold it

@JourneymanGeek I remember seeing one that was quite pretty. Let me see if I can find it.
Ah, no I found it and it is ugly.

3:55 AM
@terdon: The adobe open source fonts come close to perfect for me
and Arial works at a pinch

Yes, there is always arial.

I'm sure Lifehacker had a great guide to dyslexic friendly fonts a while ago. I can't find it though
Why are there two 'duplicate of...' options for flags? o.O
There's the top level one, then there's other > duplicate...
@JourneymanGeek That website almost made me throw up.

Hello
If you guys had to choose ONE Linux distro to use primarily, which one would you use?
Arch? Debian? Gentoo?

Bob
@joejoe31b Depends on the purpose...
Long-term stable server? Debian. Experimental? Ubuntu. Local desktop? More of a toss-up... Kubuntu, OpenSUSE, lots of other candidates.
As you might have noticed, I'm most comfortable with Ubuntu/Debian.

Yeah, I am more looking at "Local Desktop"/"Experimental."
@Bob What do you think of OpenSUSE, I've never tried it.

Linux is a great operating system, but I have a question to Windows users about internet connection sharing: I need to share my internet connection with two other connections. Tha standard user interface only allows sharing an internet connection to one other connection, called "home" connection.
It all could be done with Linux easily, but it is not an option for me now.

Q: Internet Connection Sharing in Windows 7/8 between 3 network interfaces

utapyngoI need to share my LAN with two OpenVPN interfaces. I have successfully shared it with one OpenVPN interface: The Home networking connection field is mandatory and can only be filled with one connection. Is there any way to share my Ethernet with two or more home connections on Windows? The ...

8:02 AM
@utapyngo: I think you can simply bridge the adaptors.
You only use ICS if you need things like a DHCP server
@joejoe31b: I'm using ubuntu LTS, though as a desktop, I'd probably go with Kubuntu's current release or Fedora.

8:33 AM
I've created a bootable Gparted Live USB. But how do you boot from a USB flash drive on a HP ProBook HP655? F11?
I am only able to get to the mouse navigated Windows 8 recovery screens.
Where is the boot menu? Where you can select what device to boot from?
Do I have to go to UEFI options?...
I wish someone could help me with this. I am so hating this computer right now.
The main reason I need to boot with Gparted is because the disk manager tool (diskmgmt.msc) inside Windows 8 (or any Windows version for that matter) is completely useless pieace of... of a software. It can't resize partitions properly, it only know of "extending" and "shrinking" a "volume".

8:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek: bridging just breaks everything... I forgot to mention that I am not LAN admin here, and this LAN is very restrictive: additional computers are not allowed, MACs are checked.

9:04 AM
@utapyngo I dont know exactally cause i dont have 2 :-) but when reading about it and seeing other troubles with it, it is confusing. because: you dont instigate sharing of the internet too the other device, you set up One device as shared :-) only one ever. This distinction is confusing. So mabey once you set the ONE device with the internet to be shared, then mabey 2 can use it?
With ICS, i was able to have multiple computers using the "internet nic as shared by ICS" But many times (even myself) we keep trying to set more than one item because it seems logical that is how it would work.
-Then other stupid things can also be done (leave it to me) , I can set up the intenet nic to be shared on the internet connecting computer. Then i set up ICS again on a second computer Which is feeding off the first ICS. That computers Home Nic inteface is set as shared with ICS again, to a wifi lan adapter (using virtual router) putting the wifi 2 nats away , through 2 ICS shared nic items.
(via 2 seperate computers, because only one Nic becomes the internet shared nic)

9:20 AM
did someone unleash a comment flagging bot?

@Sathya whats his name?

don't know

@Sathya no that's me I'd guess

ok, please slow down on that.

Obsolete comments? ;p
(Thats something I'm getting used to on SR.SE. Comment cleanups seem rarer on SU)

9:27 AM
yeah

Some of the best stuff is in the comments, sometimes.
(the rest we can get off a google search:-)

@Sathya I've flagged everything I'm going to flag today
I'm already onto the site after the next site
are you saying you'd rather not just have all of my flags in one go at the start of the day? :(

I Have been beating my android phone into submission non-stop for so long, that it was only today that i realised the phone Turns On when a Message comes in. I was able to turn this off by disabling it's notifications for messaging entirely.
- Is it really normal for an android phone to kick the screen back on (which also means the Touch :-( just because a simple chat message came in?

@Psycogeek not happening here

@Sathya are you using a lock screen? and do messages show on it or kick it on?

9:40 AM
@Psycogeek stock lockscreen, any notifications/messages don't appear there

Maybe that is another good reason for a lock screen. I will test that now.
Luckily it is capacitive touch , soo the holster (side pocket holder) seems to prevent any touching, as that could be a disaster.

@Psycogeek: or a flip cover ;p
(especially if your phone supports smart covers

Still turns on the backlight with the lock screen on. So then i PIN (password) it, and the light still goes on, but it goes off rather quick. (if the notification item is on in messaging).
@JourneymanGeek Smart cover for this phone has magnet , for GPSing and applying the compass, magnet was not so smart :-)
Just not sure what i will have it do. because i was arranging for it to read messages outloud, and repeat them once, so while driving or in pocket a person could get the message. which was working great (like many things) until reality hits.

9:58 AM
@JourneymanGeek are you seeing this behaviour in software rec? meta.stackoverflow.com/q/223145/133693

Nope

@Psycogeek You mean the screen lights up, or the device boots up? Because the 2nd is... weird.
@Psycogeek Does Amazon Kindle ships books now? In flash drives? Or does it send small clouds in paperboard boxes?
2

@ThatBrazilianGuy it ships you a little miniature 3G tower so you can plug it into your cable modem over ethernet and receive "Free" WhisperSync data of your "Paid" books ;-)

Like the ISPs here who offer "free wifi" with their ADSL plans? (yes, that's real. they give you a wifi AP. and then charge for it)

3:34 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy ISPs here offer "free wifi*" (at select locations), which means that if you just so happen to be at an extremely high population density place (usually a commercial business), if your ISP has a wifi hotspot there, you can get access to it without paying any additional cost
but, after having that "deal" with Verizon for about 8 years (until I ditched ADSL), I never once went anywhere that had a hotspot I could use
wifi hotspots are essentially never where I need them at the time I need them -- I don't spend all day at Starbucks

any reason mysql would just start doing this on me?
(when I attempt to start the daemon)
Angstrom Linux - mysql5 - starting with /usr/bin/mysqld_safe &
# cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal:         510584 kB
MemFree:          336804 kB
^ a lot of links were telling me this happens when your memory is full.

@rlemon gremlins

@ThatBrazilianGuy I thought about that, but they are still infesting my mail service.
no time to be screwing with my mysql
question b) can I copy the database out - wipe clean mysql - and re-install?
(real question is how do I backup and restore the DB without mysql running)

@rlemon What do the logs say?

/var/log/mysql.log doesn't exist, /var/log/mysql.err is empty

Output of # df -h?
I miss the 'Too Localized' close reason :(

6:19 PM
# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/mmcblk0p1   70M   54M   16M  78% /media/BEAGLEBONE
@CanadianLuke I also miss that reason.
woah! why all the tmpfs?
wtf?
eh, w/e

So it can't create any log files, cause /var (which is on /) is full
Do you not have a data partition or something on there?

it is a beagle bone black running Angstrom. honestly it has almost nothing on it but node, a few packages, and my application files. (plus mysql)
everything was running fine when I left work yesterday, powered down the board - this morning I got this

Even if you attach another file system over the network, it'd be better. But you need more space. Upgrade to a 4GB or 8GB card

I have no idea what happened.
it is a 4GB card :/
well, I'm trying to copy this up to a 4GB card sorry

You need to backup everything, resize the partitions (from another system), then try again.

6:27 PM
atm it is running on a 2GB 8-bit eMMC on-board flash storage

So you need a 4GB card. To expand the partition

okay well then back to my second question (because i'm not doing that because reasons) - is there any way for me to backup my DB without running mysql?
tl;dr - I was doing dev on the onboard memory - i'm moving it all over to a micro SD and the DB structure / data is all that is left.

Yes... One sec

so 'fixing the onboard' is more work than re-creating the tables and data by hand. but I would prefer not to have to

Copy the mysql folders you see under /var/lib
Just moved one of my MySQL databases to another server at the school, and it just loaded up OK. So that should be all you need to do

6:36 PM
okay cool.
no clue what happened. fyi - BeagleBone Blacks are fun, but so far very flaky
have never had issues like this on my rpi

I liked my Pi, as soon as I had a proper power supply for it

:/
only one folder in /var/lib/ for mysql
and the only thing in it is mysqld.pid
I am getting the gut feeling that isn't what I need

6:53 PM
Hmm... Worked for me...
What about clearing out something else, then starting the MySQL daemon?
Can you run mysqldump?

@CanadianLuke nope on the mysqldump side.
I'm going to try and clean up some space and try to start the daemon
I'm more concerned now on what ate up all of the space
can't have this happening in the field.

@rlemon Is it going to host the database itself?

yes
but the DB is fixed size.
24 hours of reporting history

TMP files, probably. Run a cron job that checks every few minutes for free space; if not, mail the admin

well I got what I needed off the eMMc at least
thanks for the help

No problem
