Makes sense

@ThatBrazilianGuy @JourneymanGeek Consider pulling the HDD and installing an OS (or at least bootloader) offline.

@Bob: IDE drive
I considered that.

I have and IDE/USB case

11:01 PM
laptop or desktop IDE?

And my neighbour very much probably has an IDE CD drive, I might ask her to lend me

Unlike sata, they're not the same

I know ;p
desktop-IDE

@Bob: In that particular case I think the bootloader would be worth its weight in gold ;p

@JourneymanGeek That is, it would be worthless? (How much does a byte weights?)
;p

11:03 PM
;p
@ThatBrazilianGuy: It saves the trouble of looking for a floppy next time.

Bob
You do realize that you're compiling with C++ and not Java, right @Daniel? — Makoto 6 hours ago
XD

There won't be next time. After I donate this I will get rid of every ancient piece of technology that only gets dust and becomes even more ancient

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy I still need to check if that P3 works :P

I have some SATA and some IDE HDDs on my desk and it worries me that quite soon there won't be how to extract data from the IDE ones

11:06 PM
Oldest systems I have now are c2ds.

And I don't even remember if there is important data on those or not

@ThatBrazilianGuy: Can't be that important then

What if there's old photos on there that I thought were lost?

What if you step on bearpoop in the woods? ;p

I'd wonder how I teleported out of Brazil without even noticing ;)

11:11 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy you realise if you donate that to someone it will come back to haunt you. There is only cheap capacitors with limited MTBF used on the power sections of that board. depending totally on the up-time it has had (or will have) plus the temperatures it was used at (minis go in mini cases , many times). even after you get it going (which there is no doubt you will) it might faulter and fail .

@Psycogeek: we can just give him a cunning disguise. Like a hat and a fake nose.
Then no one will know it was him.

or just make sure the case has general ok air flow.

Q: How to extend display on two monitors with VGA splitter

masfenixcurrently in my XP machine I have one video card with one VGA output. With that VGA output I am using a VGA splitter and connecting two monitors. XP Detects the second monitor and lets me do the usual functions on it. If I go to display properties I can see two monitors labelled "1" and "2". No...

Q: Not able to disable incognito mode in chrome with windows 8

ShobI have windows 8 and chrome version 28 but the steps which was said with the links below is not working. It still shows me incognito mode as enabled. http://dev.chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3#IncognitoModeAvailability or http://dev.chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3#Incognito...

Good questions to protect? Feedback?
I'm having trouble with the protection tool.
(Mod tools like this need experience and good judgement to properly use ;)

All i know is questions seem to get protected when tons of people start plastering in the same answers over and over again , many of the answer bad, or far worse than the one already there. OR, it is a question that those spammers love to search for , and put thier products and websites into.
I suspect that a protect is initiated more often based on information (low quality, new and bad) seen in the review quoe.

Bob
@DragonLord I honestly think you're being a bit overzealous with protecting questions.

@Bob Were these protections wrong, or am I just going too far?

And the Me2 answers , on questions which there is not an all encompasing solution, or solution that fits every possible cause. Again showing up as crap in the review quoe.

I'm asking for feedback for a good reason.
There's a lot for me to learn...
I actually did evaluate the answers themselves and all of the deleted answers were genuinely bad

Bob
11:45 PM
@DragonLord I think the real test for protection is volume over time.
Just trying to see if there's any meta guidelines.

Unprotected both questions
I'm starting to question if 15k users are really qualified enough to properly use this tool

Bob
@DragonLord I would say it's a tool to use sparingly.
Don't hunt for questions to use it on.
Avoid protecting questions unless they are an actual (and ongoing) problem.

I'm having trouble using it correctly, which is making me a bit scared of my own power
:\
I wish we got a timeline link like the one mods get
Properly assessing a question for protection requires seeing the big picture, and that's what the timeline gives you

Bob
@DragonLord In theory, three deleted low-rep answers should trigger an auto-protect.
If we go by that, then your protection is in line with that.

The posts were far apart, and that's where it becomes a judgement call

Bob
11:52 PM
@DragonLord Yes. The question is if the protection is actually helpful.
It's a minor cost (10 rep isn't that much), but we really don't want to be deterring new users.
I don't think SU's being flooded with useless answers badly enough to need to pre-emptively protect a lot, though (can mods confirm?)

Just ran into this one

A: ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED in Chrome on a single site

Google Userto solve this shit 1) Go to desktop. 2) Right click Google Chrome 3) Press properties. 4) Go to target: 5) and copy paste ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED It should look like this and the gap between them should be a 'space' (((( "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" ERR_NAME_NOT_...

This one is an easier decision because all of the bad answers were within the last several months, not years apart

Bob
In any case, you really shouldn't be hunting down old questions to protect - if you protect at all, it's probably better to do that to questions currently demonstrating a problem when they crop up under review or new answers.

@Bob That was on the front page
The last answer was posted 21 minutes ago

Bob
@DragonLord ...I wasn't referring to that last one :P
Though, now that I look, the other two had recent-ish answers too.
Probably should've checked first, sorry.

I'm going to integrate a protection check into my "front-page patrol" but will make sure the decision is correctly made

Bob

The protected message gives a reasonable indicator:
> This question is protected to prevent "thanks!", "me too!", or spam answers by new users.
So perhaps poor attempts at answering aren't necessarily an issue unless in high volume - as long as they are actual attempts to answer the question.
shrug
Or maybe I'm reading too much into a message someone wrote up in 10 secs.

lol
