12:11 AM
ahh joy
I might be firing up a test install of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrollback on a VM

@JourneymanGeek That looks kinda cool!

Oh, I might throw open the VM to you guys if it works

Kinda figured, if you're advertising that here ;)

Looks purdy! Give SE Chat a run for its money... JK JK

12:18 AM
I'm not that fond of the HUGE user list with icons
also, no starwall ;p
3

But, it looks nicer if you're looking for conversations! Lol
I agree cosmetics could be changed, but it's still a cool concept

Oh
and you can set it up to talk to IRC

I miss IRC chat rooms :( I used to have a popular one with some friends I met through another site, but we've all kinda just... Left...

lol
I found out about this cause of an IRC chatroom ;p

Go figure...

12:27 AM
(but meh, I indirectly got an interview cause of an IRC chatroom XD)

On a social site (mainly for Canadians), there was a "private" computer forum, where the elite could just talk and post. Then we had our own site, our own IRC channel, our own FTP repository, etc. But that's all gone now. But through that site, I learned about Stack Overflow, posted one question, left for a couple years, then learned about Super User

I'm mostly on small private servers ;p
but I'm on freenode
Not a fan of IRC for tech support but its a great social tool

I'm not on anywhere anymore, but I was on efnet

i used to use freenode a lot

I gotta run, I'll be right back (just going to another building)

Bob
12:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek The whole lack of offline messages/notifications makes that kinda annoying.
Certainly colourful.

Q: Windows 7 BSOD 0x7A after every 1-2 hour

AlamMy computer is BSOD'ing after every 1-2 hour. It is doing BSOD randomly. When I check for solutions no solution came up. Even the xml file is not readable. I'll try to take an screenshot of the BSOD screen and post here. Is there a way to read that Dump file? I am using a laptop so I can't chec...

1:08 AM
I'm back

1 hour later…
2:10 AM
Afternoon all!

Sup @MichaelFrank

Oh ya know... just laying around the house resting my broken knee.

Shitty. I can make you feel better!
My OnePlus One phone just cleared customs, and is arriving tomorrow ^.^

My Tramadol is doing a good job of that!
But that's awesome.

Gotta run again though, gotta teach First Aid now

3 hours later…
Bob
5:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek You're running Win10 in VBox, right?

Bob
Have you noticed any cursor lag?
It seems quite severe here.

Not really
I did give it very happy ram tho
oh, 'trailing'?

Bob
Even limited RAM shouldn't result in cursor lag.
@JourneymanGeek Ya.
Also, when moving quickly off-screen it stops tracking at that point - so the cursor is still on the screen a bit away from the edge.
Maybe I've been spoiled by VMware not being stupid.

Bob
5:13 AM
That... doesn't really show anything :\

That's how it looks for me ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek A low-framerate GIF isn't gonna say much about cursor lag :P
It's something you feel.

Bob
I suppose you could see it if you had a camera pointed at the mouse...

._.
ahh
then no

Bob
5:19 AM
Basically, you'd expect move mouse => move cursor.
But I get move mouse => minor delays of varying length => move cursor
It's not enough to be measurable, or think something's frozen.
But it's enough for the cursor to feel laggy
Hm. I just upped it to two CPUs, and that seems to have fixed it (sevenforums.com/virtualization/…)
VBox is doing something very very weird.
Especially considering a single i7-3770 core can easily beat all the low-end Windows tablets out there that work just fine.
And also considering actual measured CPU usage is pretty much zero.

6:02 AM
@Bob This guy only has natural lighting and photos are awesome: youtu.be/LOP8GZp3aME?t=19s

Bob
@Boris_yo Can't watch videos right now - at work

6:24 AM
ugh
My parents have a gift for messing up my productivity ;p

6:52 AM

3 hours later…
10:30 AM
@Hennes Oh :/

11:19 AM
Bleh to get Edison to support my Web Cam, I have to build the kernel

That builds character

I know :D
Downloading a 600 Mb source package :/

11:55 AM
Blah the sd card reader doesn't work in linux
SOB

That is odd

Oh wait, there is a /dev/sdb
Stupid cinnamon didn't mount

ooh Yocto uses something called bitbake for make/build of the source
Bitbake is nice
Now it's not nice
It doesn't show me an ETA for the download of the kernel souces
fuck my internet

12:06 PM
I should find another ISP
512 kbps sucks :(

12:29 PM
HALP!
I am dual booting windows and ubuntu.
I installed ubuntu first (don't ask me why)
Then Windows.
Then windows rebooted.
for some reason windows couldn't start... just kept rebooting from the black screen
probably because I did something stupid on windows...
Then I live booted ubuntu, started boot-repair to get back grub

I'm gonna put it here for bookmarking #ignore alextgalileo.altervista.org/blog/…

now both windows and ubuntu work well.
but...

but ?

Grub shows there are two windows
one on sda3 and another on sda4
the sda3 version just keeps rebooting
but booting into sda4 works fine
...not sure what to do :(

That's weird
Me think you installed Windows twice

12:33 PM
Noep
It is a new laptop.
Freshly installed linux
then windows

Well did it contain FreeDOS ?

It came with ubuntu 12.04
I wiped the hard drive.
Installed 14.04 lts

Oh check what's in sda3 ?
And what's in sda4

sda3 is a logical partition, I guess. I would have to boot in ubuntu to check that, hold on.
!!afk ubuntu

tempted to burn all the node processes

12:42 PM
@HackToHell: chat abuse!
(I do the same on G+ ;p)

@HackToHell sda3 is created by windows, that 105mb partition :/

@AwalGarg Aha !
@JourneymanGeek hehe :D

@HackToHell my dear linux mint!

this is kinda shitty

@HackToHell so... now?

12:43 PM
I have a node.js app with an installer script
that dosen't pull in any of the node.js deps it needs

@AwalGarg Naw, ubuntu 14.04 with cinnamon
@AwalGarg Live with it like me or google and find a solution

@HackToHell o_O change that start logo brah!
@HackToHell you also have the same situation?

@JourneymanGeek deps ?

dependencies

dependencies
:( @JourneymanGeek ninja

12:44 PM
so I'm running the script and pulling them in one by one as it bitches.

lol

@AwalGarg I have a 1 gig FreeDOS partition that I have no idea how to remove

Shouldn't npm manage them for you @JourneymanGeek?

@AwalGarg: should

@JourneymanGeek That fucking sucks

12:45 PM
If it did, would I be having this problem?

lol

@HackToHell: meh, I'm documenting it.

I remember the time I had to make a offline npm package
so damn annoying

@HackToHell so... how about you google and find the solution? Would help both of us :P

why the bloody hell can't they put it in a zip file

12:46 PM
goes to google

pondering running a local instance of this

@AwalGarg I'm playing with my Edison board ... :P

How does windows manage to suck so fuckin much?

I am going to make my galileo board run 24/7 as a downloading server :P

nice

12:47 PM
Edison is giong to be my Command and Control server :P
@JourneymanGeek that's nice
works with irc I suppose

In theory
Its a bit odd but I'm bored, and want do something interesting ;p

@JourneymanGeek awsome

"meaningful conversations" they are trying to ruin the web :-)

Q: Why does Grub report two items for Windows 7?

Christian FazziniI did a clean install of Windows 7 on the same hard drive. I followed the instructions at: http://www.howtogeek.com/114884/how-to-repair-grub2-when-ubuntu-wont-boot/ I followed the terminal instructions to restore grub bootloader. Whenever I reboot. I see two entries of Windows 7 on Grub. I do...

Looks like it is ok...

Uhm I don't want to break anything
Go ahead try it out

1:13 PM
@allquixotic I didn't leave you, I left EVERYONE.
speaking of leaving...
o/

Bye!
@HackToHell: 0_0
what do you have for storage on that?

Bob
@kalina ...I'm amazed you even saw that message.
Months after the fact, too.
Do you make a habit of going around searching your name on chatrooms? :P

1:31 PM
@Bob yes!
it's like an RSS feed of all the things I need to get back to eventually

1:53 PM
@JourneymanGeek Uhm 16 gig class 10 SD card :D

I don't have a external HDD so SD cards it is \m/

does can it take an external HDD?

It has USB port, I don't think it can power a HDD though
The entire thing is run on a 1.5 A adapter
or you can run it from a standard USB port of a PC

You can actually do what with a raspi too

1:55 PM
Yeah, edison is basically raspi on steroids
Galileo is arduino on steroids
whoa star wall
2

and has x86

Yeah

which is a BIG thing when you want to compile stuff elsewhere

I suppose so
I was thinking of changing my ISP last month and then I promptly forgot all about it
Called another ISP today and they offer 2 Mbps unlimited !

I keep telling my wife to sue the ISP but she doesn't want to
Not only they charge for a lot of unneeded services (antivirus, backup, etc etc etc), despite unavoidable coupled sales being forbidded by law; and they charge for access to wifi hotspots that haven't ever worked for the entire year we've been using this ISP

2:01 PM
Hey @Sathya is reliance(ISP) any good ?
They offer 2Mbps for 700 \m/

2:18 PM
Okay watching stuff on a Blu-ray disk is too awesome
I want aBLu ray drive now

@HackToHell I had a good experience with them when I was in Chennai ( >3 yrs ago)
dunno how they are now tho

Oh, I am going to risk it.
I simply spend too much time waiting for stuff to download

lol
their CDMA sucks ._.

2:34 PM
I'm using their CDMA modem as my keyboard stand, fits perfectly.

3:07 PM
;p

2 hours later…
4:47 PM
I think I've just found my favourite command ever, 'yes no'

@TomHart In Linux?

Yeah, I was looking for a way to spam out no, and saw I could pass a string to yes

5:06 PM

Is reddit down?

Weird... I"m getting their OW page

5:14 PM

5:25 PM
@allquixotic Someone's been on reddit today

@ThatBrazilianGuy I went to reddit.com when Luke asked, and saw that, and posted it.

I only made an account there yesterday
Had been hearing about it for years but never bothered
YIL it can be a huuuuuuuge time vortex

why do you think everyoen goes there (and slashdot, and wikipedia) during lunch

Q: Forcing clients to get new IP Address from DHCP Server

Canadian LukeI am running a DHCP server on Debian Wheezy, with isc-dhcp-server. Because people were connecting unauthorized machines, my DHCP leases were running thin, and eventually, authorized machines could not connect to our network. So, I asked about blocking certain MAC addresses from even picking up an...

8:03 PM
@CanadianLuke Just FYI, blocking a MAC address on your DHCP does not prevent anyone from assigning themselves a static IP address
Which, when you think about, also says a bit about your problem at hand

@OliverSalzburg They're blocked via iptables, so they can get an address, but not access the Internet or other computers on the LAN. The second part to that question prevented them from getting addresses via DHCP, but they're still blocked from entering a statick IP

Ah, gotcha

We have a group looking into 802.1X, but it's a limited working group right now

8:40 PM
@CanadianLuke That's HTTP 504 Gateway Timeout
Reddit has this nasty tendency to generate 504s
No other site I visit gives me these sorts of timeouts on a regular basis

Thanks for the info, @DragonLord. I gave up and did my other "work"

I was reviewing edits and stuff and I got this...

@BenRichards Nothing new.

Great, I passed, but I had no idea these were done...
Since when? And is it because I accept a lot? :P

Review audits have been around for a while

8:45 PM
Aha
Kinda neat, but I just had no idea :P
I was looking sideways at the proposed edit because it made NO sense. XD

I've dealt with my share of spam edits

Yeah it was just a test though. Wasn't even spam. Was it randomized or do people write them? It was really obvious :P
Heh, internet just briefly cut out and phone apparently went wacko at the same time for a little while.
It's all over cable. Wonder if there was a brief outage.

Q: Block suggested edit if the edit summary contains an email address

DragonLordA follow-up from this question. I've noticed that many spam suggested edits have edit summaries that contain an email address (examples: [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]). Spambots seem to be treating the edit summary field as if it were the email field in a blog post comment form. It would be great if we to...

Oh @DragonLord I didn't mean that I was reviewing an edit at all. It was just that the proposed edit was nonsense and once I rejected it, it showed that message, that it was a test and I passed.
I've reviewed edits and stuff before. That was the first time it said "It was a test" and it also was far and above nonsense.
Was wondering if the text was randomized by the site or if someone wrote it :P

Q: What are review tests (audits) and how do they work?

AsheeshRI recently received this rather amusing message while reviewing a user's first post: Congratulations! This was only a test, designed to make sure you were paying attention. This post has already been removed, but thanks for taking time to leave feedback for the author. What is t...

Pretty sure it's randomized text

9:02 PM
Aha
Though with some of the really poor english I've seen in comments and people obviously using websites very wrongly, I wouldn't put it past someone to actually make a post like that :P
Could be a bit more subtle though!
Working from home today because snow

@BenRichards How much do you got?

@CanadianLuke We actually are expecting only up to 8 inches. But it is very wet and it's sticking, plus it's the first snow of the year, so we expect slippery conditions :P

How close to the border are you?

I'm in Northern MA so no lake effect :P

9:23 PM

0_0
@BenRichards: randomised text
Often this markovian chainsoup, like they make in glorious soviet union.

@allquixotic Nope, right now the pain is in my left knee.

@MichaelFrank :(

@MichaelFrank: at least, its not the agony of da feet

9:39 PM
Hahah. New gravatar!

Bob
:/

what gravatar?
or who rather

@allquixotic Me

OH. LOL. Oliver
I Ctrl+F5'ed. I love it haha

:D
It's from the new C&H episode. The scene was hilarious

10:01 PM
I really love it when patches are included upstream in a timely manner
And I hate it when my pull requests go unnoticed for weeks >:(

10:43 PM
@JourneymanGeek Aha!
It's slightly annoying when you're working remotely due to weather that said weather also is causing hiccups in your Internet connection. :P

@BenRichards LTE :) even in horrific weather, cellular towers are so sturdy that I rarely lose connection

@allquixotic I have three options: VNC, NX, or X forwarding over ssh. I fear the performance I would see over a cell network. Even LTE. :P
(besides, I'm close to my 2GB data cap and don't want to push it over this month. Also, I'm rural so cell connection isn't necessarily stable even in the best conditions, depending on what part of the house you're in)
Used to be worse. Can't complain. But it's not necessarily good either.

lol
@BenRichards: I have crappy fibre
(and that's better than cable)

@JourneymanGeek Oh I'd love fiber. Too bad it's not available here.

Fiber is available here... But it's around $150/mo to start

10:54 PM
@BenRichards: we have the "we block ports cause we feel like it, and only supply the advertised for local sites" ISP
@CanadianLuke: about half that would get you gigabit fibre

@JourneymanGeek That sucks. :( Hopefully that doesn't happen here. Hopefully Title II reclassification goes through.

@BenRichards: Oh, I'll likely get another ISP when I move out
I don't need cable particularly, and the one I have in mind would let me use hulu and/or iplayer

@BenRichards I have unlimited data, and the cellular connection is awesome

@JourneymanGeek Oh do you have plans to move yet?

@BenRichards: Job first
Interviewed last week at a place that seems perfect for me

10:56 PM
@JourneymanGeek Ah. I noticed you were doing interviews. How's that going?
Awesome

@BenRichards: first intervew was a success
I must say getting that far here is a pain in the arse

Yep, speed is a bit lower than I'm used ot

I have a ton of applications no one seems to have read

nods
Yeah that happens here too :P

I've had 3 interviews so far
all of which had someone from that company reach out to me.
Oh 4. I went for a walk in interview for library assistant

10:58 PM
I have never been turned down after interviewing for a job, but I have applied without being offered an interview

nods That's what it was like when I was job hunting last year. The job I got actually happened through a placement agency.

I think the technical guys who interviewed me were impressed.

I interviewed for this one a few years ago but didn't get it. Apparently not for lack of skills, but b/c the boss said I didn't seem too enthusiastic. I wonder if that's a general problem for me.

@JourneymanGeek I hate you... Only for your cheap fibre

10:59 PM
I convinced him this time around that I am enthused. Got it. :P

I'm generally enthusastic
Though, the interviewer was a little suprised when I mentioned I had 7 systems in my home network, not counting phones ;p
and I probably understated it a bit.
Prolly 10, including the raspi, excluding the two spare systems

Oh, new beta speedtest looks worse!
Though that could just be variance in service quality. It has been spotty

@BenRichards: do you run synergy/want a key for the newer "commercial" versions?

11:02 PM
@JourneymanGeek I haven't run synergy for a while. I did donate once though.

ahh
I did, got a ton of keys ;p
(though if I was all windows, I still prefer MWB)

aha :P
What's that?

Much slower download than what we're used to

dang, that's backwards. We usually get crap upload compared to download
Dinnertime, see ya!

ls
oops
Least it wasn't a password ;p
(though this is a VM and uses a specific username/password combo)
off topicness aside...
