Anyone want a copy of the sun at night?

Bob
12:17 AM
@DragonLord Is it a vuln or bug, though?
A vuln is a bug that can be exploited in an attack.
If the filename only takes input locally and doesn't lead to an elevation of privilege attack, it's probably not a vuln.

1:05 AM
man, I feel like an idiot
turns out there's a really easy way to do bridged networking in KVM

1:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek Good luck remembering that IPv6 address lolloolololol

@MichaelFrank: I PROBABLY should have redacted that.

heh..

Done ;p

I still have the original open.. ;P

oh, I can trust you guys not to hack me ;p
(mostly)

1 hour later…
3:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek cool

2 hours later…
4:56 AM
Tempted to try this on my USB drive
And infect every since PC in my college :P

lol

A: Does taking this apart have any potential health hazards?

Journeyman GeekIt depends on what you do with it. Most modern systems are designed to be human if not user serviceable, and anything toxic should be noted and come with a great big warning. If you want to cannibalise parts, you should face few issues. I've taken apart systems and in general, unless you break ...

I had much too much fun with this

@Bob (y)

I'm curious, has anyone here used Project Naptha? It's a Google Chrome extension that allows you to "copy and paste" text from images (internet memes, XKCD comics like the one above, etc.) and even "edit" or translate them.

How do you call shellshock in cmd.exe? :) http://t.co/3KuCFKGogv

Bob
@HackToHell Meh.
WontFix: NotAVuln
This only works if someone specifically uses the envvar in a script.
Bash's vuln was that all envvars will be parsed and executed regardless of use.
All this FUD over 'shellshock' is really fucking annoying.

9:39 AM
;p
Funny thing is, the worst I've seen someone do? Is rip out bash without a clue to what they were doing.

I can barely use cmd
I Actually have to install Cygwin to use a shell in windows

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh yea, that guy -_-
@TardisGuy plslrn2powershell

XP and... Did 7 First pack have it?

Bob
@TardisGuy It's been included as part of the core OS since Vista.
Also available as an extra download for XP and 2003
not sure about 2000

I installed Gow and now I use all linux commands in cmd

9:54 AM
Freely admit ive never felt the need to learn MS Command line since dos.
Not that its unimportant, just windows tech work rarely requires it. Usually just an AV-DVD, Windows DVD, Linux Live USB (Harddrive recovery) But never had anything that needed command line
What is this "Gow"
could google it... guess ill google it

Bob
@TardisGuy A lot of the newer WServer stuff has PowerShell cmdlets now.

hm
neat
Need Co-Linux
Actually what i really need is Windows to boot on half my CPu and not touch the other half
anyone know how to do that?

Bob
@TardisGuy Eh, it won't touch partitions where it doesn't recognise the partition ID
pretty much a standard dual-boot

@TardisGuy GNU on Windows

Bob
just a warning: if you install Windows first and some Linux distro second, those installers (GRUB) love to wreak havoc with the Windows bootloader - prepare for pain if you ever want to remove GRUB.

9:58 AM
I always install Linux after windows, its always been easier for me.
Just because im lazy and dont want to manally set Grub
and if I need to install windows again.... I unplug my linux drive.
Then I boot into it for update-grub
Well Bios disable.

Bob
Eh.

Yes, I know Boot order: Its just paranoia

Bob
Better to install in UEFI mode and let that handle bootloaders.

old habit

Bob
Unless GRUB clobbers BOOTMGR in that case too, in which case it's fucking broken

10:00 AM
If I UEFI (Which i am) I have issues with legacy dualboots
Grub2, no issues.
Dunno
Maybe im breaking it wrong.
lol
I hate Fakeraid tho.
Love 1GB/s write but... Mehcant install android x86, Hackintosh...

Bob
@TardisGuy Eh, I'd say "why would you do that on raw hardware?"
those, especially the Android, are probably best done in a VM

Science?
Just because?

Bob
:\

In my case: I am tweaking an ubuntu Chroot in android x86 - I do much desktop convergence experimentation

Bob
I personally prefer a more stable host system

10:04 AM
Yeah, but its easier to put stuff in android than it is to put android in stuff.
ITs not about running android as a desktop OS, but getting all those applications working across everything.
For the tablet x86/64 Android is better interactive, but sometimes you still need a desktop app.

Eventually it will all merge into a Touch optimized, but either useable UIs

10:29 AM
reads up

Bob
Hm.
I have a Win10 system installed. Great.
Now what? :S

@TardisGuy nice neat package of windows native gnu tools
Also on modern systems, unless you have special hardware needs, one main OS and VMs is the way to go

Virtualbox seems to process better, but with worse graphics. A tradeoff for the latency.
Vmware: Gotta kill so many default settings to get it to run decent. Still does the best with graphics.
Qemu would be perfect if it were possible to do a PCI Passthrough, or a vm-iommu nest.
sometimes its just faster to hardboot it for testing.

VMware is way better than VirtualBox
I wonder how Hyper-V fares

10:48 AM
Hyper-V is...
Pretty awesome!! ... ... ...
...
If youre going to run Windows 8+ in it.
Only

11:02 AM
Hyper-v on anything but windows 8 is a stock hypervisor minus vid-...

11:14 AM
@TardisGuy: apparently KVM does pci-e passthrough
and qemu will run anything, badly, with no admin rights ;p

qemu CPU Emulation will yes.
Qemu-KVM is binary translation.

Hi guys, I was wondering if you could help me out. I'm looking at buying a samsung monitor (samsung.com/levant/c/p/LU28D590DS/ZN), but the resolution is higher than the maximum resolution of my laptop (a lenovo u410). It doesn't say if lower resolutions are supported. Is this normally the case?

2:00 PM
Hey guys!

Lower resolutions will be supported, but you do not want to do that
Anything bar the native resulution (or an even multiple of that) will look horrible

Does anyone know if there is a way to remove or manage Chrome apps before installing Chrome?

So you either want native resolution, a multiple of that (e.g. 640x480 on an LCD with natively does 1280x960) or you want to disable scaling
And then you end up with a black border around the screen

@CamilStaps What @Hennes said.
:)

2:03 PM
Chrome flags n stuff sync across the account
so any change to one computer probly change the other.

One question though: The the laptops chipset/GPU/... limits the resolution.
Or are you comparing the max which can be shown on the build in screen.

@TardisGuy Was that a reply to me?

aye
o rite etiquette

Many laptops will happily support multiple monitors at a decent resolutions (e.g. three 1920x1200 displays) while being limited to something much less on their own build in LCD

@CamilStaps Buy the good monitor, set it to scale to right resolution HDMI easiest, Displayport if you got it.
its like twitter rite?

2:06 PM
@TardisGuy Aye, aye! :) I'm not sure I understand. I'll try to explain better.

no... no its not.
@sammyg When you manage Chrome app on one PC
@sammyg You manage all
remove from one
remove from all

@TardisGuy I'm not signed into my Google account on Chrome, on any of my computers. I did a clean install on all recently. But you know how when you install Chrome and sign in, it gets all your apps and settings and stuff?... what if I want to prevent that from happening? So I want to sign in, but not have all that junk (mostly) installed automatically. Any solution? Except resenting to sign in?
@TardisGuy OK

@sammyg settings -> sign in

Sniggers att he lenovo 410 specs
Memory size 8000.0 MB

Advanced sync

2:09 PM
That is very precise
And probably wrong :)

could be language

Unless it has 7.812MiB

probably language barrier
liek if I dont know the word "million" I might say "1000 1000's" or something
f**kit, iunno.

@TardisGuy Ah! Ok! :) So if I select "choose what to sync" and deselect all those things, and then I sign in, the old junk won't be installed automatically?

yep

@TardisGuy I don't want to stretch this conversation any further. I will test your thesis in a VM later on. Hehe, call me nuts! But I don't want to mess up my install. But is there like no central login, like Admin Console login for Google Apps? From where you can "manage" installed apps and such?

yeah thats another way.

I can't sign into admin.google.com

Although, I just backup my appdata file
and overwrite the new installed one on the other computer
thats my sync
cause im dum
cant be bothered to type in all that shiz again

Yeah, that would be a nice way to manage or your Google Chrome stuff. But it seems that this only works for Google Apps education or business customers.

2:29 PM
@Bob lol. I'm kind of a grammar pedant myself, but I don't make ad-hominem attacks on people in comments on SU when they make grammar mistakes.. some people do that to me though

Frankly...
There are times i deliberately truncate my language when trying to explain something very important to someone... out of courtesy.

However, if they dont like what i said, then my mistake of "Their" and not "They're" is suddenly extremely important in a psychology discussion

How come my android phone seems to have a /20 IP?

@ThatBrazilianGuy IPv4, or IPv6?

Is that even possible?
v4

possible, but extremely unlikely
you're probably reading it wrong

2:40 PM
1 sec

oh. it may be a CGN
if your "perceived" IP (in the device's opinion) and your external IP don't match, it's probably a CGN, and you probably don't have access to that entire /20

10.x.x.x is a private range, right?

right

Bob
ya

But even then I'd expect a /24 address.

2:43 PM
there's no need for it to be even numbers like /24, /16, /8, etc.
with classless it can be anything from 1 to 32

Bob
my dedi has a /29, for example

mine has like a /27 :P
well I can GET a /27 but I'm paying for a /28 or something. I forget the number. I have 64 IPs and can purchase 192 more for a one-time cost at any time

Even numbers are easier though.

I have to count backwards from 32 and I'm too lazy

2:44 PM
I don't understand class vs classless much. Damn, I don't understand networks much. (I'm waiting for that CCNA course to start again so I can re-apply)

/32 = 1, /31 = 2, /30 = 4, /29 = 8, /28 = 16, /27 = 32, /26 = 64, /25 = 128, /24 = 256 -- or something like that

Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy wlan0 that's not a WAN connection. looks like tethering...

so I can get a /24 for a one-time cost per IP, but I have a /26 already

@Bob It's my android phone connecting to a local wifi

hmm

2:46 PM
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaait, /24 = 256?
Should't local machines have a /32 address then? (If my PC has the local address of , say, 192.168.1.10 shouldn't it be leased just a single IP by DHCP ?)

@ThatBrazilianGuy it's probably not saying that you can actually use all of that /20, but that the netmask of your 10.x space is a /20
@ThatBrazilianGuy a machine with a single IP would have a /32, yes, but it looks like the formatting of the ifconfig on your android device, instead of telling the netmask, gives a CIDR

I am networking stupid.

you would only be able to use other IPs within the CIDR range if the router lets you

I Dont even know what the 20s n the 24s or the 30s mean

on an unfiltered out-of-the-box router or modem sold to consumers, you could just arbitrarily decide to use one of those IPs within your CIDR and it'd let you
but on a public IP network like a CGN, no

Bob
2:47 PM
@allquixotic looks more like an ip addr show

@TardisGuy 30's mean you're getting old and should have a job and a car and a family.

@Bob ah, ok. that's why
@ThatBrazilianGuy FU! not everyone has to have a family
car, yes. job, yes. but sex is for people who are attractive

@allquixotic You'd be surprised.
!! s/sex/sex with attractive people/

and I'm almost 29 so don't start going normative on what I should have >_>

@ThatBrazilianGuy car, yes. job, yes. but sex with attractive people is for people who are attractive (source)

2:49 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy I have a 09 G6, I fix cell phones and im active in experimental research in education ... /shrug
But frankly, I kinda wish I took the lawyer route.

JMG will get arranged by his parents; super super lucky to be in that kind of culture

somedays

@allquixotic I was being ironi... sarcast... I was emulating the societal norm in a cynical way

Bob
whoops, I just realised I accidentally created a vserver with a /24 netmask instead of a /29 one

@ThatBrazilianGuy I figured, but I enjoy barking at people even when they're sarcastic

Bob
2:50 PM
...it's got the wrong broadcast address now -_-

@allquixotic Super super lucky? I'd hate an arranged marriage. (Unless by some chance of the universe I ended up with a super hot girl who's also really smart and a great personality and happens to really like me).
And I suppose it must be even worse for the women. They have no say in traditional societies and if they don't want an arranged marriage, no one cares.

also, random note but I can't support my cat's family (Felidae) while the Orioles are playing the Detroit Tigers in the ALDS :P I still feed her and pet her, but she has to understand that cats are unwelcome in Birdland this weekend
(I was at the Orioles Game 1 in the ALDS last night, we kicked butt and I screamed my lungs out)

I can't see any fun in sports.
Well, I see a little fun in praticing sports.
And negative fun in watching sports.

to each their own

2:54 PM
Watching people playing videogames in sport-like fashion (with live commentary from reporters) is something baffling to me.

I can understand if you see negative fun in watching sports after the whole of Brazil was roundly embarrassed on the world stage in the World Cup
you're so scarred from the event that even being a citizen of the country, you have a permanent bad taste in your mouth about sports spectation
it's like the 9/11 of Brazil
except German soccer players committed it

My computer woke up a few times randomly last night. Without any obvious reason.

Is that normal?

Darwin is Mac Kernel right?

2:55 PM
@sammyg give it diphenhydramine or benadryl; that tends to be efficacious in cases of sleeplessness
@TardisGuy no, the Mac kernel is XNU.

What is Darwin?

@allquixotic Nah, even before that. Once it was a final for $cities_hugest_team and everyone was in the streets wearing the uniform and cheering at TVs in bars and I hadn't the slightest idea

Darwin is the core OS, encompassing the combination of the kernel with the compiler, C library, basic UNIX-alike utilities, etc

So in Hackintosh = Still Darwin

When I was at high school, every year the phys. ed. teacher would hand me a written test because I'd had missed every class the whole year. (And I never been chubby, quite the contrary.)

2:57 PM
@TardisGuy well yeah
but there are Darwin OSes that are not Mac OS X
Hackintosh is just Mac OS X illegally installed on non-Mac hardware, sometimes with custom kext drivers

(Ack, wrong CTRL-V.)

ITs because this...
firmware = "bios"
displayName = "Mac OS X 10.9"
guestOS = "darwin13-64"
Vmware Setting
guestOS must = Something else.

@allquixotic LOL! :) The problem is Windows 8.1, I'm sure of it. This OS got all my computers waking up at random. I tell you, there is something seriously wrong with Windows 8.1 and I'm not talking about the Start menu now. It tends to wake up computers for no reason. I had Windows 8.1 installed on this one three days ago.

@sammyg well, my Windows 8.1 desktop can't suspend because the RAID card's Option ROM doesn't support it, so I've never experienced that
and my Microsoft Surface Pro is a Microsoft device, so of course its drivers are tuned exactly to work 100% perfectly with Microsoft's own OS's Suspend to RAM functionality
so it never has a problem
my Windows 8.1 devices either are designed perfectly to work with Windows 8.1, or are so broken that suspend never works, so I don't have any "half-working" suspend devices

I had almost the same problem with another computer. Also that one, I upgraded to Windows 8.1. And also in that case, only after upgrading to Windows 8.1 it started waking up on its own. In fact, I have posted a question about that. But in that case, the device is listed as REALTEK. So I know... or I thought I knew, up until now... for sure that it's WOL and strange packets sent by my router that woke it up.

3:01 PM
hmm..

@sammyg maybe your router is neurotic and needs to keep talking to people throughout the night rather than letting them get any sleep

@allquixotic LOL! :) I tell you, all my equipment is neurotic! A bunch of lunatics!

Bob
@allquixotic I have no issues with my HP laptop.

Bob
Well, once it finally installed -_-

3:03 PM
And then after Windows 8.1... it's like they are all on drugs now...

Bob
@sammyg There's a setting to wake on any received packet, not just a magic packet.

@Bob I'm hoping Windows 9 10 will improve some of the core OS stuff that has been taking a back seat for years while they obsess over whether to add or remove the start menu
like the reliability of suspend, all the neat console stuff they're fixing, maybe a new release of VBScript that doesn't suck, a new release of VBA for the next Office, or better yet, .NET/C#/VB.NET integration into Office macros...
stuff I can use on the job, you know?

Bob
I'm wondering about WDDM 2.0

(in 2020, since we won't upgrade for a long time)

Bob
@allquixotic Fuck VBScript.

3:05 PM
AHA!
It was the new setting of "darwin11-64"!!
And not "darwin13-64"!! THAT MADE IT...-
... nope, froze again.

yeah that'll be cool too

Bob
There's a reason they're transitioning everything to PowerShell.

@Bob no, don't! I mean, if they'd just continue to enhance it, it could basically become a built-in sort of Ruby... improve the perf, give it JIT, give it threads, give it duck typing, give it libraries, give it Win32 API calls, give it a GUI lib, give it .NET API integration, and we're golden

@ThatBrazilianGuy: On one hand, I don't have enough of a social life to date. On the other, it can be a complete crapshoot.

my coworkers are so dead set on using it that I really hope they just improve it
that way I don't have to write large programs that ought to be written in C#, in VBScript
the only time I get to write stuff in C# is when I am making the tool for myself
if it's for consumption by customer people, it has to be VBScript

Bob
3:07 PM
@allquixotic Or, you know, move to PowerShell which can already do all those things.

@Bob that's the problem -- moving

Bob
I wonder if VBScript is officially deprecated yet.
Might be soon.

getting other people to move without being so offensive and/or blunt that you get fired, is nigh impossible

Bob
There's no reason to keep it around, except backwards compatibility.

it would be kind of cool if Windows 10 would just remove the VBScript runtime; that would give us a business justification for phasing it out even if we aren't upgrading to Windows 8 or 10 yet

Bob
3:08 PM
@allquixotic I'd rather they discontinue the damn thing than try to keep another language in parallel to PowerShell.
@allquixotic Best you can hope for is Win10+1.
Win10 might officially deprecate it, like SUA in Win8.

we could say "we should stop using VBScript because we don't know when the desktop support team will decide to upgrade us to Windows 10, at which point our code is screwed"

Bob
I hope it does.

but they won't consider that argument valid until there's an actual released OS that removes VBScript
I tried telling them that before but they said "we'll cross that bridge when we come to it"

Universal Aliases = good idea.

but that's because there isn't yet an actual Microsoft OS that removes VBScript

Bob
3:10 PM
I mean, cmd/batch is simple (if quirky) and widely used. VBScript is relatively obscure, and quite complex - and PowerShell has a similar goal.
@allquixotic When Win8 deprecated SUA, it was removed from all client editions except Enterprise.

@JourneymanGeek the way I see it, my biggest barrier to meeting people is not meeting them ... once I have an established dialogue, things can go pretty well... which is not to say, I would be successful with anyone, but just that I don't really have any particular difficulty once I have their ear ;p
with an arranged marriage, parents say, "you WILL meet this person"
I'd be like HELL YEA
then do the pretend man in the sky prayer thing to make them happy ;p

@allquixotic yup, BUT my sil yelled at my parents for no apparent reason and they're not on good terms now

What do you mean "pretend man in the sky"...

its a crapshoot ;p

@JourneymanGeek sil?
I suppose I could google it

3:15 PM
??

sister in law
also, as a hindu, people in the sky may be more appropriate ;p

That wasnt a very nice thing to --say--

The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Pastafarianism (a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarian), a movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion and opposes the teaching of intelligent design and creationism in public schools. Although adherents describe Pastafarianism as a genuine religion, it is generally seen by the media as a parody religion. The "Flying Spaghetti Monster" was first described in a satirical open letter written by Bobby Henderson in 2005 to protest the Kansas State Board of Education decision to permit teaching...
not that I consider myself a pastafarian, just that it gets the point across :P

Pfft...
God wears many faces, and sometimes many bodies.
rAmen

@JourneymanGeek oh yeah, that's right

3:17 PM
Seriously tho, If you study psychology there are 4 things you cannot believe in...
The first is God.

@TardisGuy: meh, people see the world in different ways. His statement reflects one perspective.

Bob
@TardisGuy So... a psychopath (taking that literally)?

@TardisGuy oh, come on! don't take your religion so seriously that you can't laugh at some satire. even religious people should be able to laugh at "pretend man in the sky" :P

The second is luck.

Kinda ironic, but the biggest thing I learnt from being in a christian school was tolerance ;p

3:19 PM
the third is... (how to compress)...
Free will!
and lastly feminism.

lol
I believe in all 4
though I take many feminist viewpoints with a pinch of salt

God is a DJ! ;)
Party all the time!

They can be... evil... evil people
Who here knows of this "Internet Aristocrat"
no? mk
Youtube him.
If youre into witty, sharp, sarcastic and 100% on-the-screen proven true.

haha :D

lol

Bob
3:27 PM
@sammyg Oh god you just reminded me of a... song.

thats his early work
before he started taking arms against people who pretend to have multiple personality disorder

Bob
Heh.
@allquixotic Meelec is having another sale (M-Duo), but it looks like they haven't released the new wireless ones yet.
Still got a month or two to go.

@Bob I can wait :)
I'm not at all upset about the meelec cans I have now
they're good, just hoping that the on-ears would be more comfortable and more noise isolation
longer battery life would be amazing

Bob
@allquixotic I always thought over-ears were better for noise isolation.
@allquixotic How long do they currently last?

I'd buy 2 of the on-ears if they look good, and offer to sell my gently used over-ears ;D
@Bob the ones I use at work can last 3 days and some change, if I work 8 hours and play music for about 4-6 hours of the day... so probably around 18-20 hours... it's not BAD by any measure, but it would be nice to go a full week
as it stands I plug them in every day when I leave so I don't end up with it screaming BATTERY LOW!!!!!! at 120 dB in my ear

3:42 PM
@Bob What song would that be?

Best wireless headset ive ever used.

it will last 10 hours straight at absurd volumes.

@TardisGuy only 10 hours? mine lasts 20, and they're rolling out a new model that looks like it can push 36-40.

Bob
@TardisGuy Only 10 hours? In-ear? BT 3.0? For some reason, I think allq won't be going for that :P

3:45 PM
also, that "wireless" headset... has......... wires.............
also, every in-ear thing I've tried (earbuds, whatever) has fallen out of my ears... my ears are mutant alien ears incompatible with typical human ear designs

Bob
Hm, it does do aptX though, so there's that.

@Bob I'm guessing @TardisGuy has never heard of meelec :P
if he had, he wouldn't be linking to a meh LG headset ;p

Bob
For comparison, @TardisGuy, allq's currently using these: meelec.com/product_p/hp-af62-cf-mee.htm

hmm; both of meelec's in-ear offerings only advertise 5 hours of music or 5.5 hours of talking... I guess 10 hours is not all that terrible for in-ears.

frequency response 20 Hz to 20 kHz
Well, its the design, it sits on your shoulders/neckish just so, and it dissapears.
Youre wearing earbuds that will never get caught on...stuff.

3:49 PM
even though their in-ear offerings are BT 4.0

Bob
@allquixotic Hm, meelec's original Matrix was apparently on-ear. Didn't know that.
@allquixotic Without the large band around your neck, though.
That's a lot more battery space.

it is the best in my book for comfortable and not having to charge all day and night.
however... as a gaming headset (voice chat) it blows.
in fact as a mic period it sucks

Bob
shrug I just use wired
never cared much for wireless
gaming is with a Logitech Clearchat USB headset
works well for me

yeah, the "invisible" mic (just a little hole in the plastic cup) is pretty bad on my meelecs, too... most mics on bluetooth are bad

@Bob There is a actually a song called "God is a DJ".

audio quality probably isn't the best, but the mic is great
@sammyg O_O

for gaming I use a $300 Steeltech H Wireless. can't be beat. 20 hours battery life, base station has a battery charger built in, you get 2 batteries with the headset, super easy to swap them out, so you never run out of battery... and it doesn't use bluetooth, it uses a near 0 latency wireless protocol in the unlicensed band

@Hennes @sammyg great, thanks a lot!

Faithless is Decent.

I get up and walk across the house with my H Wireless on and can still talk and hear, no dropouts
it has NEVER dropped out on me
