you know your way to deep into fonts if your sweet name for your girlfriend is Helvetica, your dog is named Segoe and he is not a german shepard , when the UPS guy shows up and you call him a Courier , and when you die everyone says they are sans you.
When you stand in line at the checkout counter leaning against it, and they look at you and you say "italics" . when you say thats not fat i am Bold, and you call your sports car condenced.

2 hours later…
@ThatBrazilianGuy !
Also, upload it :<

...it doesn't let me edit.
meh, whatever.

Yea, you have to delete then upload again.

Finally. :P

Damn you @JourneymanGeek. Spoiling my lazyness.

Q: Can you reboot a pre-installed OS on a disk image from Bochs?

Tuff GuppyTo the best of my knowledge, when installing an OS within Bochs it is treating a file like a hard disk. After it installs, it should reflect a real disk with a bootable OS, yes? If so, and after I install my OS, if I shut the emulator down, can I reboot the pre-installed OS from the disk image, ...

!!whut

@JourneymanGeek That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.

Bochs eh. Does this solve something that QEMU / virtualbox etc does not?

@JourneymanGeek Try !!wat

2:30 AM

You've been on Reddit today.

Bob
@MichaelFrank looked familiar (but it could've been from somewhere else)

The Reddit OP probably cropped the link off ;p

Bob
@MichaelFrank More likely the link was added independently.
aplacetolovedogs just doesn't sound likely as the original source
maybe a police PR image posted somewhere

2:59 AM
;p
Saw it on the dog equivilent of cheezeburger ;p

Bob
3:19 AM
@MichaelFrank Tied!

That's impressive I suppose. I lost my first, and won my second.

Bob
Lost the second.
Tied the third.
And won the fourth :P
That's probably enough for now.

Can't click, still get all the information I need from the url. :)

Q: Windows 7 mouse ghost trails

chriswwwI would like to turn off this ugly mess whereby whenever you move the mouse at any speed other than a crawl, the mouse pointer leaves ghost trails at regular intervals. It happens everywhere in windows and also in some games. I suspect windows is not reporting all mouse movement. It happens on a ...

@JourneymanGeek Yes! I miss running at 800x600
Hopefully they will be updating the textures and resolution :)

Home time!

4:50 AM
This sucks, I could get faster speed if I tied the disks together with string
amazing 4k speed, if I needed such thing. this is on a fully empty partition on the 100% front of the drive array
fake 4k speeds from the cache, raising the size a bit, brings more realistic
this is the $$$$ adaptec raid, configured in the bios only (so far) for write and read caches.
the intel is 90% similar in configurations with 4xraid0 of the same speed drives
and the intel partition was at the front of the array again, but on a 90% filled partition.
Wild variations, some explained simply by the extra cacheing and size of data

Bob
5:11 AM
@Psycogeek You need a bigger test size.
The random speeds are probably cached.
...as you said a couple posts down

yes everytime instead of sometimes
because the activity that will take the most time in real, is the huge movements of huge files
but so far the stupid card does 1/2 speeds compared to what I would expect, something needs configuring different.
heck the compared item is a full partition on a mostly full array with it all fragged up besides. (already real)
the IwhileO test, copy large set of files from the same array back to the same array.
Intel ~1:44 at speeds of 250MB/s Par
Raid to raid from Intel to Adaptec ~1:42 at speeds of 500 for short burst, and 250 for the rest SubPar
Adaptec yawn ~2:39 ~150-170MB/s I missed seeing the burst

5:55 AM
one factor it only stays active regularly with the pci bus on gen1 (so far) that item I had working at up to gen3 but it never makes it past multiple resets that way.
if they think I am going to reset the bios every boot, they can take the card and . . . ahhh I wish I was not the first idiot trying to figure this out.

6:11 AM
@Bob I have a feeling that Windows probably doesn't care about keeping the mouse refreshed at the same speed as everything else.

Bob
@MichaelFrank ?
the cursor is drawn directly by the graphics drivers IIRC
and Windows will only draw said cursor once
cursor lag and multiple cursors are very different things
even then cursor lag should be far below what a person can actually tell

7:05 AM
My new laptop's screen :O

@HackToHell I see no problem...

@Boris_yo It's sooo large ;p
My current monitor is a 4:3 720p
This is a 16:9 1080p 15.6 inch screen :O :O
Oh and since this is my first laptop, any dos and don'ts for laptops ?
I still haven't got wifi working on this >.<

7:25 AM
lol
@HackToHell: Don't drop it.
;p

7:45 AM
@JourneymanGeek yup a study a few years ago said that 80% of the loss from laptop was from the user dropping it
What was the other 20% ? seat2Key?
@HackToHell is it 4gig memory? and how is the OS acting? when programs run how much paging is shown (assuming it shows anything important to actual speed)

4gb is usually enough ;p
I have that on my x220

lol
Yes it's 4 gigs
And I can't see how I'll drop it :D
The OS is okayish
Only no WLAN

Bob
@JourneymanGeek !!no (cc @allquixotic)
You have zero breathing room.

I need to update Windows 8 to 81 to get it
4 isn't enough :(
I need to get another stick soon

Bob
4 is the bare minumum

7:54 AM
And I have 1 TB of space ^_^
;/I can't seem to find the proper brightness for the screen
It's either too bright or dullish

(memory) and it depends on what you do too

Bob
@Psycogeek most people in this room would benefit from having more
and IIRC @HackToHell is running Eclipse
he needs more

Should I get a screen guard or something ?
Yeah it's usually eclipse or IntelliJ

@HackToHell is it touch?

Nope
Battery life is horrible
Doesn't last more than 2 and a half hours

Bob
7:58 AM
@HackToHell How long?
Eh. Lower brightness a bit and you should be able to get three.
Which one did you end up buying again?

Bob
> Resolution 1366 x 768 Pixels
?

Oh wait not that one flipkart.com/…

Bob
@HackToHell First, make sure you aren't using the dedicated GPU
that drains power, fast
the higher res screen will also use some

make up your mind wull ya :-)

8:03 AM
@Bob I have no idea how to do that

Bob
@HackToHell Look at the nvidia control panel, I'd guess

I an still trying to figure out how optimus orks

Bob
I don't have a switchable graphics system with nvidia

There's only a geforce experience thingy in the start menu
and it doesn't have any graphics options o0
Wait it wants to download something

@HackToHell uh oh

Bob
8:06 AM
@HackToHell search: nvidia control panel
if you're on win8 you'll probably need to search the settings section

Aha found it !
Why you weird windows 8

did you already switch up the OS before testing the one that comes with it?

It didn't come with a OS ;p
I got a driver CD
And it basically installed all the drivers automaticaly
Does that mean that the dedicated is switched off until I do that
Oh and should I use UEFI ?

from what I read , it should be switching "as needed"as it comes installed on most of the factory stuff. The real GPU processes the 3D stuff , then sends it direct to the original gpus frame buffer.
a desktop rendered in 3d like the win 7 one, could qualify for gpu rendering, on the desktop there is a minor power savings when there is no areo at all. because the desktop still has the gpu running, it is minimal, it would be a lot of the gpu was tossed :-) or powered down completely, impossible as it is still rendering the 2d.
win8 pulls transparency , which is "work" that used to take quite an effort back 15 years ago.

Bob
@Psycogeek standard is to process most things on the integrated
the dedi is used for specific whitelisted applications by default
at least that's what amd does

8:18 AM
that would be smart

Bob
but webbrowsers and especially flash might be whitelisted, and that could cause higher battery drain. best way is to confirm through the options

kick it in when really needed for 3d games

Bob
@Psycogeek yea, most of the other stuff works fine on integrated

It's in the control panel

Bob
8:19 AM
but sometimes the default whitelists are a bit messed up

chrome :-) save power just don't use it , just joking.
ahh most laptops are plugged in most times anyways, because they don't come with a boat battery.
and a little red wagon
Laptop with tesla wireless power, a hair raising experience

So, i downloaded iso installation file for installing visual studio, then once the installation was over i (like an idiot) deleted the iso file... now the computer has to be restarted but it is asking me for the installation CD, so i had to download the iso file again... i was downloading it for 10 hours but it stopped at 99.9999999999999999% , i believe it is 100% but i am not sure...

10 hours, they could mail it to you at that rate :-)

... since microsoft's Secure Download Manager is the worst shit ever... i will have to download the iso again from zero... but i don't have enough space on HDD because i copied the iso to another folder and now i can't delete both of them.... is there a software that will show me which process is holding those 2 iso files , so that i can delete them and start downloading it again?
10 hours is great.... sometimes it is like 5 days...
because Secure Download Manager sucks... sometimes i have to download the file 5 times before it is successfully downloaded

@JANORTS wow that is secure
hackers beware BIG corrupt file in tow

8:34 AM
i am only thinking how many people are suffering every day because of those amateurs from Microsoft...

Here a download will fail if I have a memory problem, I always expect that some day the web/net packets themselves would be the problem, but so far that has not presented itself.

and how many hours have been wasted so far... it has to be like at least 1 billion hours...
i always download 100% and then it stops.... it shows: Downloading.... so it's 100% but it is somehow stucks....

at 100% it might be shifted to another location?

so i didn't come up with a better solution than deleteing the file and starting to download again
on C: i see the file as .sdc file
but i think its size is as it should be.... so it is 100% downloaded only some last thing has to be done...

some downloaders will use a temporary space, then shift it out after it is all there, making total space available an issue

8:38 AM
maybe, so how is this information going to help me?

Some will rename a file from its streaming version of itself to the finished item

btw, i didn't sleep more than 3 hours this night because of that... how i hate Microsoft...

@JANORTS I don't know , i cant fix your problem , only you can , in reality.

;-)
i will have to download the file again
why after all does microsoft need the iso installation file when the visual studio is already installed!!!!
maybe again... it is not... and i have to restart the pc and then it will finish the installation

For a renaming, that could fail if certain things are not set right, like windows will lock-out a file for 2 minutes after use (that had it locked anyway) , when a certain service is turned off. (it is here on SU somewhere)., I am looking for it on SU myself.

8:41 AM
this is the screenshot of what microsoft is asking me
what happens when i just ignore it and restart the computer?
visual studio will not be properly installed?

@JANORTS what would happen if they put in the usual "not found [browse] button so a person can re-point the installer.

it would not help me anyway because i have the downloaded ISO at 99.999999%

@JANORTS assuming i read (lightly) everything else you said, exactly when does this particular error show up?

i used Daemon Tools, mounted ISO into it... installed Visual Studio and then once it was finished it said that my PC had to be restarted but before i clicked "OK, restart my PC".... i unmounted ISO from Daemon Tools and deleted the ISO file before clicking restart my PC.... i know it's my own mistake.... i could have saved 20 hours of my life...

@JANORTS ahh, then it all makes sence

8:52 AM
now i am stuck because i can't delete 2 ISO files from C: and don't have enough space for downloading 6 GB ISO again...

Cheap Trick, 7ZIp will extract an ISO , without burn or mount. I have been using that method myself a lot (probably to much)

nice trick... thanks

7zip can open pretty much every compression/archiving format out there

if it extracts all proper it is 98% likely to be all there and install. then (important) the install directory becomes there.

I needs to get used to this keyboard ;p
It's a bit different form the one I am used to, the keys are too small ;p

8:58 AM
@allquixotic It's an email app. But, more importantly, it's on the internet and it's new, so I want it.

so the process that is locking my file is System ... ;-)))

if there is a retry, you could wait for minutes 3of them, and retry it, but that trick never works, and is only for a very specific problem
for the error you displayed, you could remount the image, get everything back the exact same way, then retry it.
an ISo is somehow expected to be on the CD , don't know why :-) then you just re-locate the cd back in the same lettered cd unit and it assumes to work.

now i first have to delete the ISO files
without that i am stucked

if the letter changes, then the path it mindlessly looks for , and doesn't allow you to browse would be wrong.

no,... once i download the ISO in 10 hours... i will mount it to the same virtual DVD-rom (optical drive).... it is E: in my case...
but can i kill process System ?? ;-)
isn't there any tool that can delete ANY file in windows, no matter what !!!!
some strong Russian deleting software... ;-)

9:08 AM
@JANORTS you could try unlocker. but the system isn't stupid (lol) it was doing something?

what is unlcoker?

it find the file handles, and tries (within the system) to clue in the user, remove the handle, and delete.

ok i will try

In some cases , like in the case of uninstallation looking for the original install, the install path in the registry can be changed to match where the installer files are moved to. not sure how that applies to what your attempting now. Just we know the "install directory" for every install is listed in the registry. and it can be re-pointed there.
Ok this is the stats i get when the MB bios has the adaptec running Gen 3 pci-e
All i have to do now is figure out how to keep the hardware being inited and posted when set that way :-(

this is where the downloading got stuck
after 10 hours !!! of downloading.... i really hate MS

9:20 AM
@JANORTS i would hate the downloader software :-)

Microsoft...
this is the screenshot
even when i pause the downloading and resume ... it is not helping
i believe the whole 100% of file is downloaded but some last action has to be done and it is never done that is why it is stuck at 100%
i think i will try to download the ISO for the 4th time now

@JANORTS and it is probably the same action that causes every 99.9% download to fail at that point, which after 15 years of that same error, it is probably known exactly what causes it
@JANORTS so you have 2X the space needed to store? and any "temp" locations have the whole available space also?

i deleted some files
so i will try to download the ISO again

Like for example with not enough space or too small of a Net Temps setting (internet options) any files to large downloaded via IE will fail.

maybe i will be lucky and will be able to download

9:33 AM
It isn't luck, stupid system, usless error message, smart user , human Vs Machine.

;-)
that's why i like Ubuntu !!!
or Linux in general

Oh sure because you can be an idiot and have it all work right , NO!!

9:45 AM
what an idiot am i.... i didn't unmount the ISO from Daemon Tools , that's why i couldn't delete it... i am too tired after not sleeping enough last night... i don't know what i am doing anymore...

been there done that, woke up with solution in 2 seconds :-)
GO TO BED !
the machine needs no sleep
But if i could just get this loooong process started before hitting the hay, i could wake up in the morning, and . . . . Do It All over again, correctly.

10:33 AM
With android studio and chrome running, I need more RAM :|
@bob was right ;p
Gradle builds in 1min32sec, used to take 3 in my desktop

10:46 AM
bam
while building
and this is after closing chrome
It peaked at 3.6

11:07 AM
well I am onto the raid management software , Argggggggg
Ok I can see having some ability to communicate to this via the network and web or whatever, but A) I bet you couldn't get this to work yourself B) why you no provide simple GUI to driver like a normal person. Even on paper in the meeting when you decided on this method it didn't look like a good idea.
this is to acquire what amounts to "full" control of the hardware, complete deletions, and breaking the array and all. seriously you think you need that bouncing around and hopping off to the web like this

So it is in the queue, but:
Unless this is a review this does not make sense

@Hennes this looks like a joke I read 2 weeks ago, Oh right that was written 2 weeks ago :-)

Bob
@HackToHell I was? ... I mean of course I was!

Ah. it actually was a review.

11:22 AM
I cannot see the deleted, but the joke one the user never did come back, to even taunt us under that same name.

Other question: How can I upload movies to Super User

Q: Why do some AC adapters and power supplies generate a whining noise, and what can I do about it?

Rishat MuhametshinI have a lot of gadgets, most of them are provided with a tiny AC charger which outputs something like 1A*5V. (This can happen with larger PC power supplies and laptop chargers as well.) Some of them produce a high-pitched whining noise when plugged in but not connected to a device, and stop maki...

Q: What does registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wbem\CIMOM\ThrottleDrege do?

user319647What does registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wbem\CIMOM\ThrottleDrege do? Background to this is that one of our users is experiencing abnormally slow copy of files on his Windows 8 Dell E6230 machine. This problem is intermittent and of course doesn't happen when I'm there. I did...

Look at the item CIMOM, now look at my picture above? they are following me :-)
I almost know what that thing is today :-)

11:57 AM
@Bob hehe :P

12:08 PM
@Psycogeek Good morning. How are you?

Q: As an IT guy how do I get girlfriend?

ITguyI spend a lot of time around computers working for a computer shop but this makes it difficult to meet any girls unless I am fixing their stuff. Now this may seem off topic but I am sure many of you face this problem so I feel this is a good question. I also don't want the dumb type of girl so ho...

Best question of the week, in the likely to be deleted catagory

Closed

wow haha
that question....

closed :-( no wonder I cant get a GF !
I was looking for a blonde that asks really dumb questions. Ones I can answer :-)
@allquixotic Hey wake up, grab this cup of coffee (sneaks him a double java mocha with extra sugar and redbull) and tell me how to set the write back cache on , on an adaptec.

12:45 PM
@Psycogeek Search for "Good morning, how are you" on YouTube.

Your first?! Welcome to the world of lappies!

Mine has monitor of 14-inches and 1366x768 resolution which does not display high-definition videos we they should be viewed. That means avoid such monitors and enjoy monitor like yours because it should be better.

Q: No error message and Google Chrome just stopped working

AnnanceI ran a system restore this morning because my computer was acting a little weird (any scrolling magnifies the page.) I had this problem before but this time it somehow disabled Google Chrome. I can still use IE, but I do not like it. I am very computer illiterate. How can I get my Chrome back us...

Your free now, run away , and don't look back.
I cant believe that software put an apache server on my machine for the purpose of controlling a storage controller . I don't wanna be a server
What does it take, do I have to bring down every server in the country (say just once) to prove to them, there should be a line between Da Web and Da system.
it is not even blurred anymore, heck they can run my MB bios , the lowest level of the hardware from the web, if they just knew how to sneak in.

@Boris_yo aye

1:12 PM
@Psycogeek Google Chrome did that?

Going to try PXE boot to install Ubuntu in my laptop

@Psycogeek Some people buy new computer solely for using Facebook. That's how dangerous it's spying efforts have become.

@Boris_yo no, I am still trying to get my stupid simple raid array running. I (honestly) should have just tossed in a $50 sata controller
all of todays raid cards though are designed for servers, 15 operating systems, remote operation, and lastly possible desktop use. :-(
So not only do I not want it, but I am paying extra for it :-)

What are these stupid dots that I have?!

freckles

1:17 PM
@Psycogeek Who's got cold? You and @HackToHell?
Okay I know. You tought I was stupid!? You and all your SE have been corrupted with money Facebook offered you to expand their spying activities. You have allowed them to install tracking freckle pixel on my laptop!

@Boris_yo it looks like the . . . has overlapped the thing? are you zomewhat zoomed, or using a larger font sizes ?

@Psycogeek You are right BUT this still doesn't change the fact that we are pixel tracked!

actually there are tracking freckles :-) but If I tell you about them, I have to keel you.

Google Translate does not translate keel => Russian.

old technique 1 pixel pictures put on web pages, hosted offsite, every time this picture was downloaded it would indicate views, along with the IP address of the person being freked
That is so old now, we can now put 27 page of tracking and tracing code and , everyone Luvs it , and the extra bandwidth they save.
@Boris_yo keel, aka keel haul , to tie person to rope and pull under keel of boat, popular torture method of pirates and squeamish naval officers (needs citation)

1:29 PM
@Psycogeek Oh how lovely. Next time I am in US I will make sure to play pirates with you.

bring scuba
It might take some time to work out the event, and we wouldn't want you dying , before suffering

@Psycogeek Care to tell me which you would like? https://www.dropbox.com/s/qwdvcnmeqozdpnx/package_catalogue.jpg?dl=0

From perspective of:

1. Beauty
2. Quality

for me , I would prefer 3 10 and 14, for pretty things (barf) 7 and 14 look like something some people would say "and this is the box it comes in"
I just want to get things in one piece (shipping) that works right. Gifts , the doller store has gift bags :-) close enough, its the product that counts, not the thought.
Worse thing to give someone is a "Gift Plague" that is something they don't want, that does not last, that is not usable, BUT because you gave it to them they have to hold on to it.
might as well give them an STD :-)

2:01 PM
"According to the manufacturer this screen has a 2ms response time." and you fell for it :-)

I've got a feeling I'm going to hit the rep cap...

A: Why do some AC adapters and power supplies generate a whining noise, and what can I do about it?

DragonLordMost power conversion devices contains coils, such as transformers or inductors. These components use electromagnetism to convert AC mains power to low-voltage DC power. The varying magnetic fields generated by these components can cause them to physically vibrate at high frequency, resulting in ...

@Psycogeek did youever get it working?
(the 8405)
@Psycogeek arcconf -- please DO NOT attempt to use maxView, it is such a POS, I tried telling you this before >_>

@allquixotic Yessir, it has been working, at various times, i do not trust it. it will not start up from init/post ,i have not got it down to a specific thing yet.
Once it is going it works fine i.stack.imgur.com/EbW9p.png and this is when things were set Much better for it in the MB itself.

@Psycogeek so you have to do something specific in order to get it working?
nice throughput

@allquixotic I do not know, it makes zero sence so far. there are times after some of my boots resets and offs that i have to Slam clear the bios using this crasy added button on the board for doing so. probably similar to cmos clear jumper.
I am assuming so far, that any normalised computer , could probably keep it running, because i can keep it running no -problem at slower bus speed and slower cpu clock and slower memory

2:31 PM
So, how's the controller handling?

@allquixotic Yea you said that, but i just wanted to make a single change with a GUI, and have to have a single view IN to it on rare occasions. that means it too needs to just show up , not have to spend 2 days figuring out some BS type it in commands

use arcconf for all your configuration needs
meh, your choice, it's not that complicated

@allquixotic pushing a single button and getting an instant view with a gui has been possible for 20 years now :-) typing that is so 1975 ? so this arcconf is cli that talks direct to driver?
@allquixotic Uhh i dont have a PDF viewer installed, i am still back at installing hardware :-)
But i did find the manuels on the web
I had used highpoints "web control" for thier raid, and everyone said it sucks so bad, some returned the card. adaptecs indeed makes highoints method look sane :-)
I cannot see that max view even working at all on my machine, sooo it is out.

3:01 PM
@allquixotic pastebin.com/dViXmga3 got any tips? I was trying to turn on the highest level of write cache (have UPS) . I assume that is called "CopyBack" in this?

3:12 PM
you guys would tell me if my newest question was off-topic wouldn't you?

@Malachi it is code, so it is being attacked,

but it is on topic, right? should I remove the code or does it help?

by trolls :-)

that's a gremlin
lol

@Malachi I am not quite sure, one of those cases that might be treated better at SO, even though the rest of it is about services and log and permission type stuff, handled here. What if the coders already know why your specific query has this issue?

3:20 PM
well they do and they don't, I think that the LOCAL SERVICE user is the one that owns the process that is being queried, but it only happens on pretty much the only Vista System.

@Malachi It is possible if you described instead what your code DOES , and how that occurs, that the fear of code would not exist in the asking

Code Review has given me an alternative approach but I am still testing it.

Then of course on SO :-) you would do the opposite , put the code first , and ask why the code does that .
(then they tell you why (instead) the system does that)

found a flaw in the suggested code!
I was more or less looking for someone who understood the user system on Vista better than I do

and you know it is being classed off-topic because of "code"
I think even if it was migrated direct to SO (unchanged), because your asking about effects , based on code, they would be completly ok with it.

3:30 PM
maybe I will flag it for migration and see what answers I get. I haven't gotten any down votes here yet, but there are 2 close votes already along with 2 upvotes. but I could use some exposure to SO again, it's been a while

I do not know how these security guys are refering to, but i believe the same security/permission system is used for system trusttedInstaller and local and network etc, Logged? i donno

I am thinking that the code grabs users from a system table, not necessarily users that can be logged into windows.... that is a possibility

I can gain the same permission as
"system" and get into the system as system being a user of sorts?
