12:00 AM
@JourneymanGeek whine , i want my old school :-)

and wait. How old is your keyboard?
I haven't seen a pure PS/2 keyboard in ages

@JourneymanGeek some of them are almost new. ps2 only is not so easy to get.

but practically the active converter is your best option
@Psycogeek: oh, dualmode keyboards are common
and I can understand keeping an old trackball

The one i am trying to hook is a cherry with trackpad, has 2 ps2 things. What i am wondering is if there is simple adaption (not another buffer) for these single PS2 ports. Ahh the manuel again, that might say nothing about it.

simply? not as far as I know
which can mean no

12:13 AM
they use the word combo port, keyboard/mouse. but i suspect your right it is Keyboard OR mouse
There is a Cable that combines both . amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000067SLZ/… But as you can see from the reviews, it must have a very limited hardware that suports it.

12:37 AM
Up next is all the fun connections to the case
They make that easy to do where you can see something. These things hold all the connection, and slide onto the whole thing in one move

I've not had much luck with that terminal block
mine fell apart

Huston we have a problem :-) looks like I have to rearrange the pins in the speaker one already . assuming it actually is the way it says it is

12:50 AM
looks about correct to me

I was thinking the speaker should be on speaker and ground, as no power is required for the board speaker thing.

It would work on speaker and 5V just start with a huge "offset"

but the leftmost connector is probably ground too

right, i mentally reverse it and it is still wrong.
shift at least one wire, or shift both so the label is on the outside.

12:56 AM
nope, since if you have mono speakers it dosen't matter
with stereo speakers, yes cause you don't want em going out of phase

@JourneymanGeek yes we wouldnt want the beep to be out of phase :-)
@JourneymanGeek Indeed the block is crispy feeling, like it could easily break.

heh, the pins popped out for me

@JourneymanGeek the speaker connector itself was actually marked (tiny) where the 2 lines should have been put.

1:49 AM
UEFI , this is going to take a while. Wonder if there are any tests in the thing. its just sitting there . memory is set 1333, cpu all sleepy , booring :-)
The 2 digit LED readout thing has always got some stuff in it. now that i am in the bios, could they translate that into english . CPU DXE is initilised, oookay
""DXE is the opposite of SXE which is a life of no drugs, no sex, nothing that would hurt your body in any way. DXE is the idea that you drink as much as you can you do as many drugs as you can and you have as much sex as you can. It also in my mind promotes violence and all illegal activities. Also it is a lifelong commitment once you choose to be DXE theres no goin back"" thanks Urban dictionary, guess my computer is now on drugs, and about to become violent
--- heck just give me 4 analog controls on the front of the thing, I can turn them to 11.

@ThatBrazilianGuy politicians?

@maletin Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

Has anyone here taken a course in Human Computer Interaction?

I'm a human and I interact with computers.

yeah me too, I was just wondering if anyone who had taken the course found it to be a handful of decent nuggets of knowledge wrapped up in a whole bunch of common sense crap

2:04 AM
that sounds like most of the courses I've taken

I honestly don't care what the term is for the space between lines of text, if you tell me there is an optimal size for the space, I find that useful, but the rest of it is crap

@NewProgrammerJames: on the other hand, that lets you communicate effectively

what do you mean?

if you're talking to another UX designer
you're using the same lingo

I see... I guess that makes sense... it would probably mean more if I was working with people like that then

2:07 AM
same reason I have a 360 page book on how to write technical reports ;p

thanks for taking my frustration and making me feel dumb because I was frustrated with standards :)

sorry ;p
as I've probably mentioned before, I'm also a management major, so I know exactly how bad the language barrier can be between disciplines

it's all good... who knows... maybe someday I will be a real programmer and I'll find myself discussing these things with other people
I remember the first time I was told I needed to "patch" some network cables... and I was so confused... until I learned that meant "plug it in the hole on the switch"

lol
more precisely, connect it to a patch panel
which is basically something that you use so you can manage cabling more effectively
A patch panel, patch bay, patch field or jack field is a number of circuits, usually of the same or similar type, which appear on jacks for monitoring, interconnecting, and testing circuits in a convenient, flexible manner. Uses and connectors In recording studios, television and radio broadcast studios, and concert sound reinforcement systems, patchbays are widely used to facilitate the connection of different devices, such as microphones, electric or electronic instruments, effects (e.g. compression, reverb, etc.), recording gear, amplifiers, or broadcasting equipment. Patchbays make it...
once again, the importance of specialised language

@NewProgrammerJames And here i thought Patching, was a Quick repair job, Patch up them cables so we can get this thing working.

2:12 AM
true... but I felt so dumb at first... because I wasn't asked to do anything hard... I am still building my professional geek experience... I have been a home geek for so long... I've really only had a couple years of experience now in the professional IT world... I never knew that had a real term... I just plugged cables into ports

lol
@NewProgrammerJames: I know this cause I used to do audio-video stuff in school

I still to this day have learned so much on my own at home that when I learn there is a technical term it sometimes throws me for a loop

lol
I know the feeling
one reason I hang out here and SF
learning by osmosis ;p

like the term concatenate... I always just said put two variables together
I had a teacher start using that term and I was completely lost until I figured it out
maybe I need a better understanding of the english language

@NewProgrammerJames They say chinese language has many different words for many different things, instead of few words and 50 meanings for each use of the words. With tech it is 500 abreviations besides, with 50 (other) meanings in 50 other fields.
I wonder how much more difficult it is to say " it will take 2456 years to get to the planet meglon with the FTL drive" Vrses "it will take 2456 years to get to the planet meglon with the Faster than light drive" .
If a few abbreviations work so well, why not more? Googles GCB is OSWB , it allows you to BTW , while SRRS , WCUs Find it is a APMWA , and hope that WCAT.

2:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek Bizarre stuff made in Brazil source of WTFs and facepalms. Sort of.
So, yeah, politicians also.
@Psycogeek From what I see online AFAIK, all English speakers communicate in abreviations use TLAs, IIRC

@ThatBrazilianGuy uhh what did he say :-)
I think the solution to the problem lies in technology that has been around for ages. TTS and STT .

@Psycogeek IDK. WTF. OMG.

oh oh now that little LED says 99, Super IO initilisation.
I knew i should have waited another year, when the BIOS will have a 5" color IPS display on it
Super IO initilisation
Super Io inititilaisation is . . .
I need to do something with this computer that will really put it through its paces. Install winders :-) that oughta put me through the paces.
Porbably i just hook up the web cable and push 2 buttons to do that right?

Bob
2:52 AM
ahhhh annual "spring festival"
I forgot about it
far too many performancE stands with people who can't sing

I would acronym drop... but I'm so mentally AWOL that I should be sent AFK for trying to fill out ID 10 T forms

not acronyms... but almost related and funny imgs.xkcd.com/comics/mnemonics.png

3:08 AM
!! xkcd 992

@Gowtham Don't be annoying, drop the @, nobody likes a double-ping.
@NewProgrammerJames xkcd.com/992

@NewProgrammerJames If you post a xkcd link here it oneboxes by default ;p

I'm going to have to plead ignorance... what is "onebox"?
you can make fun of me if you want

Foursqare Automates Process Of Becoming A 'Superuser' In A Move To Steamline Venue Database Edits http://tcrn.ch/17Af2wz by @loyalelectron
^^ oneboxing

I see, thank you
sorry about that

3:18 AM
no need to be, it's one the ways we like to confuse new guys :D
Also @Bob buyvm apparently enabled /64 block ipv6 thingy

@NewProgrammerJames Exactally so why is it i can remember Illuminatie , New world order, alex jones, 5 charachter names on star wars, but i forget what my moms first name is (other than mom)

I would have to guess it is due to lack of use... I never call my mom by her first name

The key to the whole thing is application, if i wanted to know about the planets of the solar system, travel to each one in order. Not going to forget that trip.
You shoulda seen it first we stopped by mercury, that shit was Hot, and it was really hard to breath there . We had a great time jumping high because of the low-gravity.

3:34 AM
@Gowtham: and are looking at ssd based accounts with half the space, and possibly extra ipv4 addresses on some plans

@JourneymanGeek yeah

@user252102 Hey there! You're pretty special, aren't you? :)

Bob
3:52 AM
why the fuck are a bunch of primary school girls dancing on a stage to "tonight" by pitbull?

@Bob lol

OK i got one of these psudo flash sticks, a USB card reader with a microSD in it, and i just toss the contents of the win7 DVD on it, and the new UEFI just boots right up to it . . . right?

Bob
@Gowtham yea, I mentioned it a while go - I actually posted that here
I do get their emails, ya know :P

oh ok :P

Bob
4:23 AM
holy shit
What happened yesterday? :O

@Bob you server ?

Bob
@Gowtham my home router...
@somequixotic > I really loathe how Amazon thinks every Amazon link you look at indicates you have keen interest in buying that thing. I'm sure some geeky data miner somewhere out there just came himself, "Oh shit, notonetocomment just bought a pressure cooker and a candy thermometer last week, now he's looking at a meth test kit?!"
and the next comment down
> Fuck now Im going to see that in all my Amazon ads

@Bob ok ...

@Bob funny
well blast it did not boot, where is the file exlorer on this UEFI thing .

4:58 AM
thats the standard DDWRT traffic screen, right?

Somehow my question got 10k views... last I checked it was like 1k :O superuser.com/questions/293735/…

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea

1 hour later…
6:24 AM
a bootable USB, uhh, ok lets try
The winders own USB install bootmaker does not indicate an ability to make the bootable USB from a Windows DVD, only from an ISO. sorta weird when it will make it from a crack :-) (or a legit MS download)

@Dan Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

Dan
@JohnCavil ok, anyone else ever emulate an Android phone on Ubuntu 10.04 and run into issues with Launcher crashing continually?

6:39 AM
Finnaly, now if i can get the windows install to pass stage 2.

Bob
@Dan Maybe, but you're talking to a bot :P

lol
heh, discourse install is a slight pain in the ass

Bob
You might have some more luck searching and/or asking a question on the main site, though. Super User. Ask Ubuntu and Unix & Linux could all accept this question, though the first two may be more relevant.
@JourneymanGeek I'm not bothering with that for now.

it might be a crappy emulator

Bob
Still need to get the wordpress install up, but then I need my domain first, but then I want to get my laptop repaired first

6:42 AM
@Bob: heh, might be letting a bunch of cool people play with my instance

Bob
@Psycogeek o.O CRT screen?

@Bob: just so many dependancies o0

@Bob its a crappy craig LCD TV . only thing i have with HDMI other than dragging out the 42" tv.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ah
@Psycogeek that's LCD? O.O

@Bob: initial set of dependancies. Then another set for ruby

Dan
6:48 AM
@JourneymanGeek true

7:22 AM
sup

lol
waiting on discourse to pull in ruby stuff ;p
and suprisingly its not using as much memory as the docs seem to indicate to install

gems?

@JourneymanGeek wait till it spins up

@Sathya: its supposed to use over a gig to install, I'm using 230mb active, and the rest is buffers ;p
@somequixotic: lots of gems

it doesn't take a gig to install
I've tried to deploy it on a free heroku tier

7:30 AM
<_<

grabbed all the gems
failed at asset something stage

"If you have errors building the native extensions, ensure you have sufficient free system memory. 1GB with no swap isn't enough, we recommend having 2GB as a minimum."

and datgemslist.png

I seem to be installing everything so far

@JourneymanGeek oh

7:31 AM
if it dosen't work, just throw a shitload of swap at it ;p

it'll work fine on 512

yeah, this VPS has a gig

heroku's free tier is 512 iirc

8:00 AM
heh, turns out YML is super picky about indents

@StaceyAnne Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

can i copy a .so file from one pc to another? say, from one ubuntu1304 to another ubuntu1304?

Bob
8:16 AM
ok. now stuck on shitty netbook with opensuse
heh, it's on FF 15.0.1

8:38 AM
:/

Bob
not even gonna update
I never use this machine anyway
it'll just be week
@somequixotic how're things going?
I've only got two tabs open D:

@Bob good, good!

Bob
@somequixotic for some reason I read that in the voice of some evil character
can't remember which, though

@StaceyAnne: In theory, I do believe so
not a good idea unless you have to tho

@Bernhard Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

8:47 AM
@JohnCavil haha, thanks, didn't know there were bots around here ;)
Anyhow, I am looking for suggestions for nice video editing software (Windows or Linux), I used Windows Movie Maker, but it can't do what I want, e.g. simulataneous double captions. Any suggestions?

XD
let me know if you find one

Bob
@Bernhard simultaneous double captions? o.o
I'm not even sure what that means.
(though, if price doesn't matter, I'm pretty sure After Effects would be able to)

@Bob Basically I want to compose a movie of several fragment of good wishes spoken by people, but I want both subtitles AND a caption of who is actually telling something
I know I can make a seperate srt file or something with subtitles, but I want to avoid this if possible
I am now installing macromedia flash professional to try a few thing, but I highlt doubt if it is worht it.
@Bob, well, price does matter to me, as it will be a one time project anyhow

Bob
@Bernhard uh... do you mean you want a name and separate text?
and do you want soft or hard captions?

9:02 AM
@StaceyAnne as long as they're the same version of Linux, it should work

@Bob, something like that indeed
What are soft and hard captions?

Bob
soft is a separate text stream or file
hard is part of the video itself, rendered onto the video

ok, I officially hate yml

Bob
soft is greatly preferred in most circumstances
something is eating my spaces D:
@Bernhard perhaps give virtualdub a shot

> Proof that I had too much free time in college
:O

Bob
9:06 AM
oh wait

Bob
@Bernhard I think I mean avisub
I forgot which one
oh wait
no I don't
virtualdub is probably the right one :P
hm. might not even be either of these

@Bob I think I would prefer the hard captions, it is not like I want to ship it to multiple languages, only one for private environment. Hard captions would be more failsafe, I suppose

Bob
there was a good one, but I completely forgot hte name D:

I stumbled across virtualdub, do you have experience with that?

Bob
9:08 AM
@Bernhard at the same time, it is horribly frustrating if you ever want uncaptioned videos
@Bernhard if nothing else, virtualdub does let you hardcode subtitles

true,

Bob
generally, you edit first in a soft format (alternate stream or file) and then hardcode it later

and nametags simulataneously?

Bob
since the rendering process should be done once and cannot be edited later
@Bernhard if you have fixed positions, you could actually do two passes
@Bernhard but... why can't you put the name as part of the main text?
like, Bernhard: Hello

because it looks lame :)

Bob
9:12 AM
o.o
3
A: How do I hard code a movie with subtitles?

Mehper C. PalavuzlarUse Subtitle Edit to edit the subtitles the way you want. Then you can use VirtualDub to hard code the subtitles into the video file. You can find the instructions here. "Subtitle Edit" Features: Visually sync/adjust a subtitle (start/end position and speed). Create/add subtitle lin...

it is for a wedding abroad, and I want to bring the celebration wishes of everybody that can't attend in a nice format. Looking awesome is more important to me than portability and editability later :)

Bob
@Bernhard but the process of reencoding the video will always reduce quality

so I'll also need some functionality to stack separate movies together

Bob
you don't need to do all that in one program
you can stitch them together in program 1, add subs in program 2, render subs on top in program 3 (if you really need to)

That is a fair point
how good is windows movie maker in stitching movies together?

Bob
9:16 AM
no idea
I use After Effects now

hmm, okay
I am glad I have some time still, but don't want to switch programs once started
:)
I should work as simple as possible, that's what I like about windows movie maker
easy to use

discourse is up ;p
some minor things to fix, first tho

thanks @Bob for the advise

9:32 AM
whee looks like no school on monday

nice!

Have to find something to do ...
hmm

code!

@somequixotic yes!

Bob
9:53 AM
ok
this netbook's keyboard sucks
actually have to hammer each key all the way down D:
in comparison, my desktop and other laptops' keyboards behave far more like mechanicals - works with partial press

lol
netbook keyboards tend to suck

@Bob why are you on an OpenSUSE netbook?

@Gowtham Hhhhhhhah!

Bob
@somequixotic taking an image of main laptop's hdd
getting the hinge repaired tomorrow

Bob
9:59 AM
I'm currently rather sad
this laptop is that bad

sad? why? :(

Bob
and I'll have to survive with it for a WHOLE WEEK! D:

...upgrade to Firefox 23 at least. it's pretty easy. or should be.

@Bob Because of keyboard and openSuse?

Bob
@Boris_yo it's a netbook
first gen atom
1024x576 screen
'nuff said
@somequixotic really don't need to break anything right now
it's on 12.2. newest is 12.3

10:03 AM
:P
oh well... the screen res on that would hurt for me more than the OS or Firefox ver
BBL

Bob
@somequixotic ya. the CPU is pretty shit too
another thing is, this was my opensuse experiment, which was abandoned
I'm far more familiar with kubuntu

@somequixotic Netbooks hurt eyesight?

10:38 AM
@Bob: plug in an external keyboard?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek not portable enough :P
I'd just use my desktop at home

lol
I have a tiny little scissor key keyboard somewhere
tenkeyless, half sized
