12:00 AM
@Boris_yo the russian one came in with a big bang, lights across the sky, visual feeling of the world ending, or even nuclear ICBM attack. While the Big scary one deflected the eyes of all, including people who get paid to track that stuff.

@Psycogeek So it was Russian meteorite that caused dinosaurs extinction and ice age?

If i was in russia , i would have been heading for the nuke shelter :-) instead of trying to get a better view. But you know what they say, when you hear shots out in front of your house, be sure to stick your head out, cause they might need a target.

@Psycogeek They might need another YouTube video.

@Boris_yo the 2013 one, lets find that video. youtube.com/watch?v=90Omh7_I8vI

@Psycogeek Don't tell me beginning picture is fake.

12:07 AM
@Boris_yo yes, because they grow aliens in bags hanging from the ceiling right? Looks more like a human cloning operation gone ary.

@Boris_yo: someone is being entirely creative, and is using a different definition of the truth, that does not correspond with reality

@Psycogeek It's cloning vats in 6 level underground Dulce base @JourneymanGeek

I might also say there may be some inexactitude in reality here as well

@JourneymanGeek Why not, picture seems real. It's not stock photo.

@Boris_yo Say you had got in there and taken that actual picture yourself, what about the picture would be different ?

12:16 AM
@Psycogeek Why would it be different? When you take photo with point&shoot, the end result is different?

@Boris_yo does that picture look like a point and shoot, or a contrived lighting situation? youtube.com/watch?v=3LaFA8XUz-0 why does this video trying to sell the same thing, use complatly different tanks?

@Psycogeek Which timing?
@Psycogeek Oh yeah, this huge digging machine is laser powered. It's very powerful laser that melts rocks. That's how they build underground cities.

@Boris_yo i dont know the dates ?

@Psycogeek I meant what is the minute and second where I can see similar cloning picture in video?

@Boris_yo they have built massive under snow and underground things before, in HUGE sizes, generally for some military or research stuff. Anybody know how many miles of tunnels it took for them colliders?

12:24 AM
@Psycogeek Hugely long but due to super laser tech, it got easier to do.

@Boris_yo i do not believe there is a laser that would cut through rock using less energy then the methods they have used for 50 Years. they roll right through mountains for roads and railroads all the time.
It is like saying no humans could have possibly built the pyramids, but yet humans everyday are buiding things as grandiose. How about that tower in the mid-east that goes up in the air rediculous and scary heights, heck if they make building any higher you will need oxygen to live on the top floors.

@JourneymanGeek You speak dog language, right? Could you record yourself barking "Shut the fuck up!", uploading wave file so I can download it and play in front of dog that barks at 3:00 AM here?

@Boris_yo: no
different dialects
I only speak westie and scnauzer

Bob
@somequixotic ah, nah. probably easier to just use the existing one
thanks for the offer, though

@Psycogeek Yeah I always wondered how skyscrapers get built. Do they use crane? If so I can't imagine how much time required it to be mounted and dismounted.

12:32 AM
@Boris_yo They have some crasy research with something like 160 simeltaniously fired lasers, in the lab around here. The project looks more like an Insane assembly to say "look how big and how many" as opposed to legit research. but what the heck they can (actually) turn a few molecules of lead into gold finnaly.

@Psycogeek: in india, they rolled a multi-ton rock up a big tower with a ramp and an elephant ;p
@Psycogeek: creating new elements can have scientific use. Also naming rights ;p

@JourneymanGeek yup I tried to sell boris a few atoms of livermorium, but with a half life in miliseconds , i would have trouble getting it to him. web Latency issues :-)
there, real sci-fi no aliens just crasy humans, that ends up looking crasier than aliens

What's with all full length movies being uploaded to YouTube?

@Psycogeek Tell me, what's half life of human?
@JourneymanGeek Seriously, I thought YouTube protects copyright but I see full length Hollywood movies there.

12:42 AM
@Boris_yo humans are regenerative, they could potentially live for thousands of years. but given about 60-90 they dont care anymore :-)

@Boris_yo: if someone reports it, it gets taken down

@Psycogeek Cold fusion can achieve same but with less energy.
@Psycogeek How about Wolverine from X-Men? Will he ever die?

@Boris_yo Yes the NIF was to learn how to create usable human energy stuff using a method that only requires 2-3 towns of energy to fire 1 time :-) well hope they ever get overunity (just of the input energy) someday.
@Boris_yo Nope wolverine could never die, he seems to have no trouble with foreign object rejection, along with regeneration capability. And marvel creates legasies that live beyond eternity

1:01 AM
@Psycogeek Wolverine's weakness is crane with huge magnet, one that moves old cars for scrap.
Time to dream...

are AWS questions on topic for us?

@JourneymanGeek Seems more relevant to web applications in SE...

Can you remove a flag ?

nope
you can probably let a mod know and ask them to decline it
see, there's one now!

may not need a mod flag

Although now i have asked in chat, a mod will have to check the question, even if only to remove flag which annihilates the implications of self-removing it ^^

9:43 AM
lol
there's generally no way to remove a chat flag ;p

@JourneymanGeek Self-promotion?

spam
actual spam

10:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek Spam is something that's completely irrelevant to subject matter. This one is relevant.

its entirely irrelevant outside having the word USB in it

Bob
> Flash Memory Storage Stick Jump Drive Pen Device U-Disk
That's a mouthful.

Stick Pen And Memory!
better name!

@JourneymanGeek The guy wanted recommendations on USB and got it.

@Boris_yo: you need to work on your reading comprehension

Bob
10:09 AM
@Boris_yo You need to read each word in the context of the rest of the sentence and the whole question.
I've written documentation for some people who would read half of each instruction and proceed to be confused and ask what it meant, which would've been solved by the other half.

someone guilty of Terminological inexactitude ;p

@Bob @JourneymanGeek Do you have religion?

Bob
What?

does it matter?

10:25 AM
Just asked. Don't answer if you don't want.

Heheh, I googled "FSM dog" to see if I could find something that could be @JourneymanGeeks religion

11:27 AM
@OliverSalzburg Must be highest being he worships...

11:59 AM
its a hungarian pauli ;p

Q: Don't throw away all votes when a user is deleted

Mad ScientistCurrently, when a moderator deletes a user all of the user's votes are removed along with the user himself. I was pretty surprised at this behaviour when I first heard about it, and I don't think it is a good idea to throw away all of the votes just because the user is deleted. Votes are locked ...

^

@DEFCON1 I don't remember this to be in any limit. It's been year since I posted part time and rules could change though...

@DEFCON1: shouldn't be, but of course, if you ask a bunch of bad questions you have more of a chance of getting question banned
so think before you ask

1:52 PM
For RAID0: nope.

RAID 0 (stripe) is just alternating sectors between drives. Or even more simple, concatenating a few drives without any performance gain. Neither do you need hardware for RAID-1. But parity calculations for RAID 3/4/5/6 do take some CPU cycles. Not enough to be a bopther on a modern CPU, but in the past it would have been an additional load on a server. One which might already be busy.

Also, for RAID5/6 can have a write gap. You can compensate for that with a proper battery backed cache. Which you will find on all non-entry-level RAID controllers.

2:17 PM
@Hennes well that helps, becuase using Raid0 with a backup is what I do, and i keep thinking my system could use a real raid card, and a good one is far from cheap.

A decent one is about Eur 500

@Psycogeek wud up man?

@Boris_yo i am up but just barely. I think i need a crane :-) mabey one with a big magnet on it.

The best choice at home might simply be to use a SSD. Either as main drive, ZFS cache or with that black magic intel thingy.

ZFS+SSD is not as good as IntelRST in terms of performance, but ZFS+SSD is much more flexible

2:19 PM
Black magic since I do not grok how to use that on multiple drives, or how to tell them how to cache stuff only for a partition
ZFS rocks in many ways. But it is too different to compare with some other stuff
However I am happy that it is out there.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek @DEFCON1 IIRC there's a max per day.

ZFS lacks a writeback cache, which makes it rather painful
I was very sad when I learned that the ZIL was not a writeback cache

@Hennes its always too many terra bytes for ssd except for the system drive. And i am going for putting a SSD in for the system this time, but i do not really have a requirement. If i can wedge system and Games :-) on it, then it might be very usefull .

@Psycogeek You don't have to wedge anything if you use IntelRST, which is what I like about it

Bob
How does anyone ask a (good) question in 30 secs? O.O

HALP. I Lost my computer due to compressing it.

chrissy howardHelp...SOS I have recovery disks for Windows 7 and system repair disk but have no idea how to use them. When I do as the screen implies screen goes blank then acer logo shows with option to press f2. Have I lost my computer due to compressing it yesterday afternoon. I only followed windows advi...

It just selects the top 64GB of most-used sectors on your harddrive and caches them

I think I know he means disk compression, but still... homour

Elite insider - "We have advanced technologies that have at least 50 difference from those technologies available today in the world. We intentionally show down technological progress in order to have advantage. For example computers and internet were already available to us in 1900 and mobile communications in 1922." @Psycogeek

Bob
2:22 PM
@DarthAndroid which is amazingly efficient

@DarthAndroid Using intel RST to turn the SSD into cache only?

@Bob Exceedingly. Over 5 days of continuous use, 97.5% of all reads/writes on my main system consist of merely 36GB worth of sectors

@Psycogeek I knew your were the real Wolverine... it's pretty that you didn't want to be casted in X-Men...

@Psycogeek yeah.
I have 4 1TB drives configured as raid10, and then a 64GB SSD configured as an acceleration drive (cache) on top of them

@DarthAndroid The cache only benchmarks show a increase of 20-25% only. which seems very odd. The test is up against a 7200rpm single drive (and they are benches) With raid0 I already have way more than 20-25% so i was not sure.

Bob
2:26 PM
@Psycogeek benchmarks != real world use

Bob
real world use, with few exceptions you'll be repeatedly accessing a very limited subset of data

I've done real-world testing on my machine with a software-implemented caching tool

Bob
I have terabytes I haven't touched in months

36GB of cache provides a 97.5% cache hit rate for me

Bob
2:27 PM
of course, there are some places where you'll be accessing large enough files that a small cache won't help

Bob
e.g. video editing, databases, etc.

loading files that I don't regularly use are slow as a platter, yes

@Bob my speed issues are all about big, make that massive files.

Bob
@Psycogeek that's not a very common use case, but that would be one of the exceptions, yes.

2:28 PM
@Psycogeek then you want a large raid0 with massive sustained sequential throughput

@DarthAndroid ok

My ZFS server can pull 450MB/s off of the platter disks (5x4TB) when talking about sequential IO
(that's with raid5, you can get better with raid0)

Bob
@DarthAndroid if you don't mind data loss/have good, frequent backups

I am trying to figure out of a INtel chip that is not fully "unlocked " K type, stops me completly from a normal light overclock, or just makes it a bit harder, and will not ever be Max overclock.

@Bob: I have CrashPlan set up on that system. I can roll the entire system back in 15-minute increments.

Bob
2:31 PM
@DarthAndroid at least you can do that :P
last time I calculated, it would take me something like ten years to upload all my data

@Psycogeek If it's not a K-unlocked, you have no real control over the overclock.

Bob
@DarthAndroid I think you can still raise the base clock
or manually overclock up to that boost
turbo boost or something

@Bob not the new procs; Original Core i7s and sandy bridge, yes, not the haswells
TurboBoost is fully automatic

@DarthAndroid "K" oinly allow multiplier modification, you can still increase the base speed, although that will speed up the whole system from PCI bus to memory, so better have good HW
But you know that already
Who doesn't ?

it only bumps the multiplier in certain cituations
@Kwaio I know; The problem is you can't just jump to the BCLK and boost a 3.3GHz system up to 4.4GHz like it's nothing

Bob
2:33 PM
@DarthAndroid yea, but last I checked you could manually force the turbo boost multiplier

@Bob I had not seen that, I suppose if the motherboard supports it

@Kwaio I do not . Because the Ks are missing some instruction sets. With 775 and a OC motherboard i could always reach 20% just not tweak just the multiplyer easily, to get a last few percentages without changing other things. But this NEW stuff is all new to me.

@DarthAndroid That's why you pay extra $$ for a "K"...

Bob
@DarthAndroid I think my P67 mobo has that option. currently on a i7-2600 (non-k)

@Kwaio That's why I did :) Didn't even have to replace the stock cooler to go to 4.4GHz

2:34 PM
Or be dumb like me, put in the extra 100$ and buy a H77 motherboard that doesn't allow proper overclocking...

Bob
lol

I still wanna punch the past me for doing this

I specifically waited until I could get a mobo which had IntelRST and supported overclocking my 2600K

Bob
@Kwaio want to trade?
I want to be able to use the IGP/QuickSync, and I don't overclock
P67... bad decision.
Fuck off clippy. I already know it was a bad decision.

my original i7 (920) is now 5-ish years old. I will OC it when it gets to slow.

2:35 PM
@Kwaio ""you can still increase the base speed, although that will speed up the whole system from PCI bus to memory"" but dont the overclocking motherboards have a way to increase the base clock without getting the PCI bus clocking into trouble?

I have a 60$ cooler and my 3570K runs @ 3.8GHz... what can be worse ?

Bob
@Hennes still running strong? :P

Amazing. 5 years on and still fast enough. I used to upgrade the computer every year

Bob
i7s are powerful enough that I haven't seen anything CPU-bound in normal use in a while

I'm pretty sure I damaged my 920 when I forgot to remove the thin plastic covering on the bottom of my watercooling heatsink :<

2:36 PM
Aye.

@Psycogeek I'm no specialist but i do'nt think so, that's the speed of the common BUS

Most of my limits are disk bound (even with hardware RAID)

Can't get the heat out of the chip with anything now, runs really hot even on stock speeds.

Well mind are GPU-bound AND CPU-bound, but i does gaming

I do not game much. Welll, nt modern games.

Bob
2:37 PM
@DarthAndroid have you tried removing the plastic? :P

I recently got word realms for my birthday
Not quite the GPU bound game :)

@Bob Yes :P After a bit of "WTF, why is my watercooling worse than the stock air cooler?"

@Kwaio I do not know how the new stuff works, but on my old stuff I am running the locked chip at 20% over, and the PCI bus at a safe 10% over. It all works fine. That does not help me with figuring out which one to buy today, the 4770 or the 4770k

Pretty sure I need to resurface the heat spreader and the heatsink now

Bob
@Kwaio GPU-bound, yea. But I have yet to see a game that gets CPU-bound on an i7.
Ignoring crazy large worlds in the more open games, of course.

2:39 PM
@Bob That's an i5, and Arma3, being an alpha/beta, is a real CPU eater

but that setup had all sort of problems. Massive learning experience. Don't buy acrylic watercooling things. Seeing the water flowing is cool, finding out it cracked and leaked into your powersupply and all over your GFX card is not.

I played around with overclock and underclocking. UC'ing did not reduce power usage by much. OC'ing it raised it 20-30 Watt. (no voltage change needed to go from 2.6GHz to 3.6GHz.)

Bob
@Kwaio i5s should be fine with just about all gaming, too
though I suppose Arma's physics are pretty intensive

Chip it a D0 revision, which usually orks fine up to 4 GHz (with voltage boost and much more power drawn, even at idle)

@DarthAndroid When i had watercooling I used car cooling liquid, which doesn't conduct electricity.. it's corrosive tho, which I found out later...

2:40 PM
@Bob World of Warcraft will get CPU bound on an overclocked Core i7 real quick

@Bob And far from optimized.

@Kwaio Yeah, I was smart and bought pre-mixed non-conductive, non-corrosive coolant

Bob
@Kwaio just waterproof the case and fill it with mineral oil :P
@DarthAndroid well, that's news to me

And if you are hungry. OC and add fries/chips ?

@Bob I would so LOVE that, man... but i'm not really good at DIY stuff, and pre-built things are expensive

2:42 PM
@Bob DwarfFortress will also get CPU bound really quickly. I have a bunch of other games that CPU bind on my 4.4GHz 2600K, I don't play them much though

Bob
and this is on defaults?

@DarthAndroid Ahhh..; DF... my collegues always wondered how i could make my laptop fan running at 100% all day long ^^
DF is the UFO of gaming... wo many parameters to check every frame...

@Bob Well, DwarfFortress yeah, but that's because it's DwarfFortress.
World of Warcraft, no.
Max out all settings, through in a few addons, and then go raiding though...

@DarthAndroid I had not much issues on my laptop with a 2.4GHz Core 2 duo... but it was WoW2.4.3

DwarfFortress knows that there's 3 different dwarf's blood on a particular tile, and does physics simulations to figure which way it flows when a fourth dwarf drops a bucket of water on the tile to clean it

2:46 PM
And tries to soak every one of the 40 pieces of clothes the dwarf is wearing

@Kwaio My card could do the rendering just fine, 1920x1080 @ 120FPS, but get into combat heavy 25-man raid combat with skada and other such addons running... drop to 15-30FPS on a good day, GPU sitting mostly idle

@DarthAndroid Well yeah i can remember Illidan@5FPS indeed

@Kwaio I always enjoyed how if you set the body temperature of a cat to 5000C, DF knew exactly what happened to the bone and flesh as the cat exploded.

Makes me remember i was taming a Dragon, I should get back to it.

I caught a dragon with a wood cage trap
Lined the edge of my map with them

2:49 PM
@DarthAndroid Plus you often WANT to have the cat explosing.

Dragon came wandering on
instantly caught.
I was like WTF
I need to find that save...

Bob
o.O
@somequixotic hi
I didn't particularly care one way or the other for tomorrow's elections.

@Bob -_-

Bob
Now? Eh. It's as good a reason as any.
@somequixotic hm?

2:56 PM

> UPDATE: After this story was published, the Coalition changed its policy on the default opt-out internet filter.
lol. because of the article, or ?

Bob
:P
@somequixotic seems like the former
