@VxqWijsman, it's impossible to accidentally ping you now. :D

@allquixotic I'll consider, maybe...

hahaha you're still slanting me
@Sathya and his powers slanted me without my consent. :-( /me feels violated // Although in reality, I love it. :D

Watch out, before you lose...
allquixotic has been removed from the room owners.

Hmm... mod + room-owner = ; = mega-mod; = ex-mod

10:03 PM

Look at those two different pixels! :D

i need a magnifying glass. Ctrl+scroll

Actually, if you zoom in the line isn't really in the middle anymore. YMMV... o_O

Bold stars?!

10:05 PM

Not large enough...

<♦ = what a mod's heart looks like

@allquixotic I just installed Media Center. How should I proceed to do the conversion?

@Ariane what are you trying to do?

/me hands over a --<--♦ to @allquixotic.

10:07 PM
@TomWijsman you better edit that
there you go :D

@Ariane sub-problem 1: convert arbitrary Japanese text into romaji
sub-problem 2: apply the conversion system to mp3/ogg/m4a tagging
guarantee there's not going to be any out of the box conversion that does this whole thing all in one jump

But is there a way?

gonna have to at least write a script if not actual code
i'll look into it

They give a few bottles of special beer to the guys and galls who organise FOSDEM.

10:10 PM
as in, code something up, maybe, if it's not too complex

One of them does not drink beer and she just opened the bottle

Don't force yourself too much.
Alcohol is awful. :c

@Ariane great starting point, wow: github.com/nicolas-raoul/kakasi-java

I'm not sure I understand -what it is- (or how you managed to find that), but if it does what it says, sounds good.

not something i should be doing at work, but if you can star some message in this convo so i remember, i'll come back to it when i get home shortly, and hack it together
uh, what file format are your music files in?
are they in all different formats or all just one format?

10:13 PM
Uuuuhm, lemme check
Mostly MP3, a good amount of m4a, ONE wav.

ooooookay... gstreamer-java it is.....

@Ariane GTFO
I mean, yeah it's actually classified as poison but... nomnomnom
It also does terrible things to good people

start at parent directory, iterate through files, ignore files not matching a known media file extension (for performance reasons), then for each file matching filter, pass the file through gstreamer, read its tags from the bus, pass the tags through kakasi, send out tag changes over the bus, write it back to a filesink, sync, delete old, mv new to old filename...

I hate alcohol. It hurts my throat, tastes bad, makes me feel sick and makes me jerk. :c

general algorithm for doing this. should be a one night hack

especially since it's involving gstreamer and java

@allqui If you expected me to understand this, it's a failure.

@Ariane no, just rubber duckin

@Arto How are you talking in chat with 6 rep? O_o

@Tanner he has 40 on SO
total network rep > 20 :: allowed in

ahhh

what is realtek PCIe FE FAMILY CONTROLLER?
that's the lan network?

@EinsteinsGrandson yes, but "realtek" isn't enough information to know its exact make/model for determining which driver

i am using Everst Home Edition to find out the model of the LAN card

10:19 PM
I already provided you a link providing a visual walkthrough of how to obtain the PCI ID

ok
what time did you do it?
;o)
i wasn't here

48 mins ago, by allquixotic
@Ein just tell them to go into device manager and extract the PCI vendor ID and device ID. http://www.ccboot.com/find-ven-dev-id.htm

Aye
Which is also the advice I ave serals times on SuperUser (including pictures)
Some searching on SU should let you find those

SU results are usually extremely high on my google search because I spend so much time on the site, but when I googled that, that ccboot site was the top hit and SE sites weren't even on the first page

10:23 PM
The way this chat cuts most of the URL all the time is so inconvenient.

there is no command for device manager?
windows command

there is

the notebook has windows 7 64 bit

Looking what it is.devmngt.msc or something like ti. But I want to have it precise

10:25 PM
@allqui I think there might be an additional problem.

国際財務報告基準
kokusaizaimuhoukokukijun

If it doesn't put spaces and basic punctuation, it may be even worse. ^^'

BTWL screenshot is from win7 x64
devmgmt.msc

@Ariane where are you seeing it spit out that particular output? did you try the command?
@EinsteinsGrandson hold down the windows key and press pause

Readme on the page you linked.

@Ariane oh, it's not updated, I think...

so now i see device manager
then i should find what?

10:28 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson once again, ccboot.com/find-ven-dev-id.htm
READ the text on that site, and understand it:
> Right click "My Computer" -> click "Manage" to open the "Computer Management" window -> "Device Manager" -> "Network Adapters" -> double click the current network adapter to open the adapter properties dialog box -> click "Details" tab then you will find the PCI Vendor and Device ID as bellow.
any questions?

the thing is that it's in polish
so the Device Instance ID is called differently
what's the order of devide instance ID?
1st one is description of the hardware

@EinsteinsGrandson try the second item in the list?

i got it

look for strings like PCI\....

For the first half of the order: see my posted picture

10:31 PM
4 of them
in there

PCI\VEN_{NUMBERS YOU NEED}&DEV_{NUMBERS YOU NEED}

Aye

just supply the letters/numbers from the two placeholders
sanity test: realtek is 10EC vendor

Use the first (PCI VENdor) and pcidatabase.com

and i already know it's a realtek

10:32 PM
That will give you the vendor

so it should be PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_{NUMBERS YOU NEED}

I will put a screenshot
that's gona be easier

Heh
My normal way is to read the manual or the motherboard specs

@Hennes HP's site is useless
it just says "Integrated 10/100 BASE-T Ethernet LAN Controller"
i literally could not find any definitive information about the detailed internals of that system even given his model number
so, PCI ID it is

I always build my own with Tyan/Asus/Gigabyte boards

10:35 PM
my bet is that it's an 8168... those are extremely common

nope, I lose. 8136

ok
so now where to download the win7 64 bit driver
?
for the device

it's a Realtek RTL8102E

ok
so i should go to realter website right?

10:37 PM
Win7 and WinServer 2008 R2 Driver 7.067
choose your download site and pray ;)
UK1 is probably the closest

/me nods at Allq. Chip Number: RTL8102E

ok
and now i should run .cat or .inf file?
or .sys?

setup.exe ?

no such thing

@EinsteinsGrandson probably just go into the device manager and do update driver and pick the directory

10:44 PM
ok

Aye. Preference: 1) setup.exe (or install.exe). 2) Update driver, browse to folder, let windows pick the correct one. 3) Right click the .inf

pardon?
ther is no setip.exe
setup.exe

Take preference 2 then.

preferences. 1) If there is a setup.exe then use it, if not move to the next one

@Ariane, I just found out that I can use Kakasi (that library) to put spaces between the words
java -Dkakasi.home=. -jar lib\kakasi.jar -Ja -Ha -Ka -s -iUTF8 -oASCII < ..\..\Documents\kana.txt
? onaji doubutsu wo 3 hiki tsukama ete kesu pazuru

10:53 PM
i still don't see the lan card among the network devices

Sounds good. But you're at work. D:

@Ariane yeah, going home in a few, and I'll finish up

it looks like it's not activated

Sigh, I feel like a slavedriver.

i tried to update the lan driver
but it said that there is already the newest driver in there

10:55 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson just right click the inf file and install, and if that doesn't work, find the unknown device in device manager and point it at the directory

so no need to install it

@Eins Windows is often wrong when it comes to drivers.

Harr. I slimmed down the dark theme!

By the way, is there any reliable way to check all drivers without looking up each and every known and unknown piece of a PC? Most of what I've seen wasn't so reliable.

10:57 PM
I especially enjoy the new community bulletin

@Oliver I don't mean to be a jerk, but I don't think this works. :/

it just does not let me install the driver

@Ariane I'm outraged!

i should probably uninstall the driver and then install it again right?

@Ariane there are various free/paid utilities that will scan your system, but generally there's no easy way, especially if you don't trust whatever driver scanning site to reliably determine the latest version of the driver and identify your hardware
@EinsteinsGrandson something like that -- although maybe it's not a driver problem at all, you seem to be assuming that it is

11:00 PM
it is i think
also in the device manager i see a yellow triangle with an exlamation mark next to Realtek driver
sorry
next to the realtek lan card

@allquixotic (I know, late reply). I used to warn you, but you said you didn't care :P Can't yell at me for literally caring

Well uhm. First, one of the first thing we're taught in website ergonomics is that light text on dark backgrounds should be used sparingly. Also, I think various colours on the black background isn't great. But hey, that's just me.

i uninstalled the driver
how can i install it back?
;o)
in device manager i don't see the realtek card anymore
;o))))))))))))))

Double-clicking the file he said I guess

on which file?
.inf?

11:04 PM
Not sure, I didn't follow.

or .sys?
or .cat?

Scroll up just a little bit

@Luke It really is fine :) I am in control of my clientside :D

You'll find it.
But seriously, those smileys are annoying and speak poorly of you. Besides, winking smileys don't have several mouths. ^^'

@EinsteinsGrandson Look under unknown devices, that's probably where the realtek card went

11:04 PM
ok

@EinsteinsGrandson click Scan for Hardware Changes in the toolstrip in device manager

or that ^

@Ariane he's winking because the Pringles Salt & Vinegar potato chips he's eating (the huge stack of them under his mouth - see?) are so salty that they make him tear up
read "TEER", not "TARE"

crazy
it found the realtek
tried to install it from C:
and said: The installation was not succesfull

Some people read that "tare"? Aw well, you learn something every day. I was super surprised just three weeks ago when I learned "pear" was pronounced "pare" not "peer". I looked so ridiculous correcting someone when they were right.

11:08 PM
there is a driver stored in C:/program files (x86)/realtek/nicdrv_8169/win7

@Ariane well, tear in that context could theoretically be read as two words that are written the same but pronounced differently and mean different things

why did they store it in program files (x86)
maybe that's the problem

@Ariane John tears up the piece of paper. Read the same way as the word "tare" (which means yet another thing)

that i should install 32-bit not 64-bit driver

@Ariane John tears up at the thought of bunnies dying. Read the same way as the word "tier" ("tiers" in this case), which means yet another thing

11:09 PM
@Eins No. 64-bit driver on 64-bit system. The 32-bit driver was probably the wrong thing to begin with. Or maybe just the folder was wrong.

oh i see
so i try to install 32-bit driver it won't work right?
if i try...

It might work, but it won't be the best thing to do, probably.
@allqui o_o Really? Why did no one ever tell me about this? I was an English tutor yet no one has ever taught me that. I'm sad.

@Ariane tear(1), tear(2), hare, hear, heir, hire, tier, tire... oh we have a fun language, yes we do.

so what should do now?
kill myself?
;o))))))))))

11:12 PM
@EinsteinsGrandson at least stop with the pringles face

ok
and then?

you're probably Doing It Wrong, but I can't see exactly what you're doing since I can't see your screen.

@Eins if it looks for a driver on C:, why not try putting your files directly on C:?

no, it asks you where to look for a driver.
he probably just picked the default of C: instead of picking the actual folder.

Ah, all right.

11:15 PM
no
there is 1 folder where it believes there is a good driver
so it just try to install it from there
tries...
then i pick the excat directory where it can find the driver that i downloaded from realtek website
and then again it says that the installation was not successfull

maybe the wrong driver :)

crazy
ok
i will try the one from hp

...is the card disabled in the BIOS?
(stupid question I know)

i believe it is
;o)

.....................................then why are you trying to install a driver for it

11:18 PM
so how can i get to bios ?
on hp notebook

go enable it in the bios and then eat your pringles

f2?
or f12?

probably just hammer DEL (delete key) or F2 or F10 or whatever random key they want you to press

just hit random keys while system is booting up
my guess is F10
from random googling
i always thought it should be Esc + Numpad Enter + Left Ctrl + Pause... good thing I'm not a BIOS designer ;)

11:24 PM
Color me stupid but can a Bluetooth printer connect to multiple devices?
I'm reading it can, but I swear this thing is disconnecting from one when another connects

@Tanner never heard of a bluetooth printer

Printing gone wireless! What could go wrong?

Seriously, I wish I could mind control the planet to make them believe it is NOT okay to use multiple smileys or exclamation/question marks in a row, 2 spk lik dis 2 ppl or to multiply a smiley's body parts. ._.

If I could mind control the planet I could think of much better things to do

@Ariane just use your imagination ;) at least until you develop self-reproducing nanobots that consume greenhouse gases, live in the upper atmosphere, and descend down with the weather into breathed air and implant themselves in the brains of those who inhale them, and interfere with the firing of neurons such that they produce the desired behavior

11:30 PM
Magical powers are easier.

in the meantime, either I have the biggest octuple-chin on the planet, or I'm really, really emphasizing my smiley :))))))))
or I'm eating Pringles potato chips

Mostly making yourself look stupid. :p

someone volunteered to code you up a Friday hack when he gets home from work
calling that same someone stupid is probably an effective deterrent / de-motivator towards that goal
I would edit your chat line before it becomes permanent

hahaha

I didn't call you stupid, I said you were making yourself look stupid.
Sorry if it offended you, though, it was meant humouristically.

11:35 PM
.......so I tell these people the printer is 9 years old, needs the $160 imaging drum replaced and a $200 fuser replaced. Cheap printer to begin with. What do they do? Hire somebody to fix it of course.

@Ariane didn't offend me, I was being hacker-style ha ha only serious
here is a gruff explanation of what I'm trying to convey
@Tanner of course :D

there is no such thing as network card disable/enable in bios
only disable lan when on battery
which can be the trigger of the problem
i remember i was solving the same problem on toshiba laptop

I don't know whether I should be like, "No that's dumb" or just let it lie :P

Re bluetooth: BT can pair with multiple devices. But most devices do not allow it
I suspect is is due to cost cutting (only need to remeber one pairing.)

the result was that i had to uninstall some safety software from the notebook

11:40 PM
@Hennes Ahh, thanks.

seurity software

@allqui All right... probably one of those intellectual things I'll never really understand. In the same box as "the game".

Dells also had the 'disable LAN while on battery' help

what do you mean hennes?

Even on their corporate (lattitude) line
Dells laptops disabled their NIC when on battery. To save a tiny bit more power
Which, on the Dells, was controller from BIOS or special Dell software

11:42 PM
the thing is that the lan is then disabled once the user starts to use the laptop on battery and it is impossible to turn it on again
yes

going to finally go home now -- I got everything done I have to get done today

now i disabled this option in bios

i procrastinated a lot today but at least i got everything completed that i needed to

@allquixotic Wow. That's a long day.

very bad time management
results good, time bad
and i kept getting hungry and eating random things >_>
paper, monitors, phones, carpet, desks, chairs, windows, etc
i think i might have even eaten a coworker
i can't remember though, i ate too many things today

11:45 PM
wtf

going home (FINALLY) bye bye

haha cya
