I only learned of ddrescue in the last few years

Before it was just cat /dev/sda > /dev/sdb to make a backup. (both quantum prodrive LPS 240S SCIS drives). No bad sectors because SCSI already fixed that

But I never had that happen to me with old SCSI drives, and I used a few. (2x quantum prodrive LPS 52S, 2x quantum prodrive LPS 240S, 1x quantum atlas 9GB (high voltage differential), 1x quantum viking II 4.5GB)

I had plenty of problems with 200Mb-ish IDE drives (which were about half the price, so I guess I got what I paid for)

yeah, calibration was needed. I recailbrated the battery and it is fine now c:)

It is large enough that the laptop no longer fits in the docking station. If your friend uses a dock tell him/her to stick to 4 or 6 cells

well, firstly, you need to make sure you stop capturing

otherwise, you'll end up with a whole load of irrelevant junk

then start filtering out definitely unrelated processes (right click the process names, 'exclude')

yeah I had to go about with 'exclude .exe' for whole lot of stuff

@Sathya Normally the trace stops at the point you get the error (after you exclude the junk or include the right process).

And reading from that point upwards what it's trying to do should yield you some information on which component it can't find.

You're looking for a group of NOT FOUND's where it ends up actually not finding it.

You'll see multiple groups of those, but that's the installer just probing the directories in the PATH environment variable.

This is most of the time the reason for failures, most of the time I manage to solve something with Process Monitor it is because something is ACCESS DENIED; and the guys who wrote the Visual Studio (un)installer or one of the various frameworks / libraries / dependencies are pretty good at leaving the system behind in a bad state.

am I missing some magic trick or is it unchangable that FullScreen-Applications with DualMonitors on windows sucks hard?

Because if Windows 8's installer is loaded by a UEFI system, it requires a GPT formatted drive.

If it's loaded by a BIOS system, it requires a MBR formatted boot drive

(on the first screen)

Windows should not be looking for a GPT on a legacy BIOS system :\

But shouldn't UEFI setup look "modern" not "biosy"

therefore, you can either reinitialise the disk as GPT (recommended) or go into the UEFI settings and set it to legacy BIOS mode (not recommended)

after confirming locale settings (the first page), press Shift + F10

then run diskpart

list disk

select disk=#, where # is the number of the disk you want to install on

convert gpt

(warning: this may cause irreversible data loss)

any repartitioning operation (or converting to GPT, as the case may be) has a risk of data loss

as long as you have your OS install media and all drivers and software backed up, you won't really miss it - reinstallation might be a little less convenient

I intend to do just that. Make a separate partition for it on my ext. hd

or if you happen to have created Lenovo recovery disks, apparently they will recreate the partition during installation

@klyonrad Windows (XP and 7) and dual screens is acceptable.

But I get a lot of crashes when I keep switching to the second screen and back, or when I try to play video full screen on the second monitor (via VLC) and have a full screen turn based game open on the first screen.
