@TomWijsman hmm... In work, managed to log on straight away, no problems
I had a problem a few days ago that Remote Desktop just launched to a black session/couldn't do a thing... I just rebooted... Wonder if it related

2 hours later…
9:42 AM
@WilliamHilsum Check your TPM ;D

:(
no idea if that is a joke by the face, but, no TPM here! just going to reboot before I leave tonight

;D
trusted platform module

@WilliamHilsum Well, I think a defective TPM could cause an error like that (and many others). But I don't even know if anyone can "check your TPM" :P

@OliverSalzburg I suppose if you have things encrpyted against it or used bitlocker/similar, it would just fail

@WilliamHilsum From the error message I assumed a critical piece of hardware is defective. Like something required for authentication or decryption

9:47 AM
@OliverSalzburg Hmm... well, when I got in, it let me log in to that machine straight away
bloody annoying and nothing in the log

Oh it happens when you remote in? I thought this happens locally. Sorry should have read the log
It could be a bit more specific which of the 2 systems it means then :D

10:19 AM
Typical windows "something attached to the system is not blah" errors are usually a service or something that's failed to restart - kinda why a reboot usually resolves them

10:50 AM
@soandos Beyond? You mean it's quite good?

11:34 AM
@iglvzx grats for hitting 10k!

@jokerdino Did that just happen?

yeah

Sweet! :D
@iglvzx Congrats ;)

Bob
o.O
Good job, @iglvzx!
(now you just need another 10k) :P
@JourneymanGeek Smart judge, if it was intentional :P

ya!
@Bob: Just to note, my next eventual target now is 50K

11:44 AM
no reason to amass rep anymore. i am gonna spend on bounties.

10k is plentiful enough

@jokerdino: Oh, I give more in bounties than i get

'grats @iglvzx!

(and if i think a question deserves a bounty it gets it) ;p
But, to some extent, its 'easier' if i have a target ;p

11:47 AM
that is a good target ;P
in Ask Ubuntu General Room, 1 min ago, by ObsessiveFOSS
I believe the world will end soon: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11061905/java-cp-class-not-found/11061925#11061925 has downvotes and it's by Jon Skeet.

I'll gladly post a bounty for ANY question i find interesting enough, and seems to have a chance of having an answer

i don't seem to amass points much anymore, spend more time reading, commenting and flagging as don't really have enough time for what i would consider complete and concise answers

@HaydnWVN That happens to all of us
Worse, our voting is so skewed compared to other sites that its not even funny anymore
Gilles has 90+k rep on Unix and only 19k rep SU

he almost has 10k rep on AU.

@IvoFlipse So?

11:55 AM
he is a bot.

@OliverSalzburg Which means at some point the reward for answering questions gets too low

yeah, 'divide and conquer' really doesn't help having a 'central' group of knowlegable users... More 'pockets of expertise'

@IvoFlipse Ah

@OliverSalzburg It took me like a year to get to 10k rep. The amount of work required for a question to get 10+ upvotes at some point just gets too much to be done casually

@IvoFlipse Indeed.

11:57 AM
Also unix has 20x less traffic than SU, so you have your voting bias right there
On SU you need to write a frigging essay to get upvoted
On top of which a lot of questions are just crap, which isn't our fault either
btw @OliverSalzburg Y U NO MODERATOR NOMINATION?!?
2

I find that small SE sites are often giving out too much rep.
But maybe I'm biased because I only really know SU
On the other hand, I don't think my standards are pretty high.

Bob
@IvoFlipse It also makes some badges... rare...

@IvoFlipse I was just disappointed for not becoming a mod on RaspberryPi.SE ;)

@OliverSalzburg I got 7k rep with ~60 answers on Fitness

Bob
o.O

12:00 PM
@OliverSalzburg Here's your chance to fix it here :P
@Bob Indeed, SU's voting is really messed up

@IvoFlipse Heh. I like how you think :)
@IvoFlipse But I was also asking myself if I want to be mod, just to be a mod. Or because I think it would actually help the community. You know what I mean?

I wish more users had that thought when they decided to nominate themselves :)
The users who don't want to become a mod are probably the ones that would be the best choice

o.O

yup as they're the ones probably most critical of questions and answers anyway

12:05 PM
SU only counts 2k active users, auch

@IvoFlipse: one reason i think the self nomination process is funny

@JourneymanGeek Well luckily we get to vote and comment, to filter them, but yes its rather funny at times

goes silent

Why is the election limited to self-nomination?

Auch Gaming only has like 550 active users :O

12:07 PM
@jokerdino: no, not standing this time ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol :P

@OliverSalzburg: er... there was an explaination the last election

I had a good read through and must admit i went WTF at a couple of them... It's great they want to be a more integral part of the site, but with less then 5k rep!?

which i didn't pay much attention to, it was before i got really properly involved in the site
@HaydnWVN: honestly? I'm shocked some of those people have so little BECAUSE they're good mod material and active

Wow Average Rep/Question has been coming down steadily, I guess that's simply because there's more poor questions though: data.stackexchange.com/superuser/query/39872/…

12:09 PM
@JourneymanGeek that's what i ment, i was suprised to see so littel rep with so many helpful flags

@JourneymanGeek True, but some lack both Meta, chat and flagging participation
meta participation
helpful flags: 13
Awesome stats man!

who?
oh ;p
Not the people i am thinking of ;p
has 4 people in mind. One, i don't have a good opinion of as a possible mod, but i respect his knowledge, one i don't know all that well.

I just hope users like Mokubai and Kronos have the time for it (as in more time than me)

lol
Thats one thing thats stopping me this year
(I have time, then it gets ducking insane...)

i just hope slhck gets in as you can see he has the time and expertise, not to mention the right attitude

Q: how to enable caches in u-boot for imx boards?

DeepuSince I am working on boot time optimization for imx boards , I heard enabling caches(D-cache or I-cache) in u-boot causes improvements in boot performance.Can any one suggest the way to enable caches in u-boot for imx boards.Enabling caches will make any damage to the board?

say what.

oh yeah enabling a cache is gonna damage a board xD

Wow on Gaming they get twice the amount of rep you can get here

@Sathya we had a nice little discussion and you do this..

@HaydnWVN moderator positions available = 2 :P

@jokerdino o_0 argument?

12:14 PM
i know, i nominate Deepu for the other

ooh
its a embedded system

@Sathya oops edited

@IvoFlipse: 3?

@JourneymanGeek After slhck there are only 2 left :P

lol
Simon should, i hope
assuming he has the time

12:15 PM
if slhck doesn't win, i rage quit SU.

@jokerdino I would simply step down so he can have my spot :P

seconded

Oh, XD
I was trying not to endorse any one... and i mentioned two of my 4 ;p

@IvoFlipse Thanks. So you want me in SU after all? xP

12:16 PM
shhh

@Sathya <-- planning to rig the voting so I will give up my spot :P

@jokerdino: we wouldn't want to chase you out at slhck's expense ;p

@JourneymanGeek agreed, don't know his name but with that many flags he's obviously contributing loads... Even if it isn't answers

@HaydnWVN: he's on chat sometimes, good kid ;p

12:17 PM
@JourneymanGeek 'kid'... oh dear

@JourneymanGeek so nice of you.

@JourneymanGeek of course we don't want @jokerdino out. Who else can I rant about Ask Ubuntu to?
3

@Sathya Darn right man. Darn right.

@IvoFlipse okay deal

12:19 PM
@HaydnWVN: I'm getting old ;p
I even have a walking stick specifically so i can wave it at whippersnappers and rant at them to get off my lawn, darn kids.

@JourneymanGeek move, grandpa.

@JourneymanGeek i can imagine.

(Actually i just picked it up cause it was cheap, and useful when i need a little extra reach to get stuff that fell off the balcony up)

Hmm. I have helped close zero questions. How very slack.

@JourneymanGeek I spent most of last weekend building a garden fence as the young 'uns just don't listen any more! ;)
that'll keep them off my lawn!

12:23 PM
@IvoFlipse ok done.

@HaydnWVN: I found landmines worked very well, but they dug them up for me :/

luke - 96
slhck - 1263
simon - 350
mokubai - 413
tom - 429
dragonlord - 164
Randolf - 123
kronos - 100
oliver - 198

I only have 401, just as a comparison

I have a list of terms, each on a new line. What's the best way to open each one as a google search in a new tab? I'm running OSX

12:24 PM
Do note btw that Tom is an 'old' user, so he's had more time to close stuff than slhck

i'll check Oliver

wonder if those stats should be posted in the election room

Simon has only been here for 1.2 years

I have 286
ya

Mokubai 2.7 years
(my decimals go to 12 :P)

12:25 PM
lol

@ivo, how about finding close vote / active day?

That would be interesting

gimme query to find active days

@bookcasey me, i'd take the easy option and just cut paste each line into a new tab...

I've got 980 active days, so I run at less than 0.5 questions/day. But I'm not sure how moderator votes are counted
@jokerdino Isn't that just in their profiles?

12:27 PM
@IvoFlipse right

HaydnWV: I have dozens of terms. I was wondering if there way a way to automate it.

I'd also note to be REALLY fair, we'd probabably need to remember low rep users would have to flag rather than VTC. The extra time/powers makes a huge difference.

would be interested in a lil query that'd show me my flags, questions and answers just like on the election screen ;)

@ivo, they are not in days.
only you (and mods) know the number of days

Kronos 522; Randolph 812; DragonLord 463; Tom 790; Mokubai 873; Simon 462; Slhck 627; Luke 367

12:28 PM
@bookcasey probably, you'd have to use something to pass the commands to different tabs... possibly using access/vb

@IvoFlipse thx

@HaydnWVN: its a mac, so.. access/vb?

@JourneymanGeek can't you guess i'm clutching at staws? ;)

maybe applescript, but neither apple using regular is here

Yeah, I'm on a mac. :-)

12:29 PM
@bookcasey: ask that on the site as a question ;p

Are there any other useful stats we think could be of importance?

or head on over to apple.stackexchange.com

I'm in the process. :-)

How many of his comments a user deleted :P

12:30 PM
Do you think this fits more in Superuser or Apple?

how many users ragequit after he downvoted their question/answer? ;)

Well, whichever you think is better.

@bookcasey it kinda applies to both, maybe even web apps if it was soemthing you were looking to integrate

@HaydnWVN: Eh. If someone ragequit, they obviously didn't belong here ;p

but if its a 1 off its more in SU/apple territory
@JourneymanGeek ragequit/toysoutofpram

12:32 PM
@bookcasey: ask it here, wait a while, if there's no answer, ask for it to be moved might be a good middle ground

luke - 0.18
slhck - 2.01
simon - 0.76
mokubai - 0.47
tom - 0.54
dragonlord - 0.35
Randolf - 0.15
kronos - 0.19
Hmm

@HaydnWVN: off the top of my head, we had that powergaming chap, and one or more of the non US video card givaway 'winners' leave. I can't remember anyone who left due to a closevote.

we can put them in a google spreadsheet

Wow Simon is doing really well based on those stats

@jokerdino that's number of users which have ragequit per day due to each nominee? ;)

12:33 PM
Oh, we have ONE user who seems to hate the current VTC system

According to this query I wouldn't even qualify for the elections :P data.stackexchange.com/superuser/query/67696/…
Apparently we need Daniel as a mod

Q: Automate Google Searching of Terms in Different Tabs

bookcaseyI have a list of terms, each on a new line. I need to Google search each one. I have been copy and pasting each term invidivually into a new tab, but I was wondering if there was a way to automate it. What is the easiest way to open a new tab for each term and search in on Google? (I am on OS...

:-)

@HaydnWVN lol nope

12:37 PM
hmm
What's the voting system we're using anyway?

Single transfereable voteing

ooh, in that case it gets a little less difficult for me ;)

Also the number of edits might be an interesting statistic, though they're heavily skewed by retagging: data.stackexchange.com/superuser/query/6627/…

docs consolidated --^

Woops didn't know this site still existed

12:45 PM
...

but it doesn't show everything. i have been all over it since the morning.

If a user doesn't have fanatic, he doesn't deserve to be a mod :P

okay-ish

12:48 PM
So do the existing mods hold positions ?

@HackToHell yeah
mods are for life!
@Sathya @IvoFlipse how many flags do you guys get every day?

@Sathya is the alpha male here

Bob
@jokerdino Probably at least two from slhck :P

roughing up everyone

@Bob just two?
@HackToHell grr?

12:51 PM
2.2k / month = ~75 flags per day?

Bob
@jokerdino That's not including other people

@IvoFlipse that's a lot

Seriously, Sathya goes from jovial to serious and get's things done, pointing out wrong stuff, and all, that's why he's the alpha male...

Well some mods do 4 days worth of flags per month, others like me only 1

11 flags for each mod

Bob
12:52 PM
Is that 2.2k unique flags?
Or total flags (including multiple on the same post)?

@Bob no

Yes, but not necessarily unique questions/answers

not unique posts i mean
because a spam post gets 6 unique flags

@jokerdino about 10-15

doesn't make sense..
Didn't Ivo say 75? o.O

12:55 PM
what doesn't?
well @studiohack takes a bulk of flags

Or you do 10 flags per day?

he does like 2x what I do.

@Sathya he is obsessed with flags I guess

@jokerdino 75 = the average number of flags per day, which get's divided over all the mods

@IvoFlipse well just got clarified.

12:57 PM
Jeeze. What Debian package contains the time executable?

@Sathya I wonder, when did they start tracking those flags? I wonder if some data is lost, because it didn't exist way back

I need to time something :D

@IvoFlipse 'm inclined to believe that's so..

Bob
@OliverSalzburg time?

@IvoFlipse: Yeah, they started doing it at some point.

12:58 PM
@Sathya Well I don't mind to see some mods did more work than me, wouldn't be healthy if I did even more :P

AU mods refuse to release the /month flag stat. grr

Bob
I mean, is there a package named time? :P

@Bob wtf...
Thanks ;)

BTW, hook me up on the SU trello board.

1:00 PM
I only helped close 200 questions?

I am jokerdino on Trello.
@OliverSalzburg tada

@jokerdino which trello board?

Well, I've only been able to cast close votes since March...

@Sathya the blog board?

I guess that's acceptable then :D

1:04 PM
@Sathya or whichever board i can peek?

jrg
@jokerdino Only because we were told to be vague about any stats we do talk about.

@jrg I wonder why though.
and I posted that when you joined the room. :p

@jokerdino lol, intentionally? ;)

@jokerdino created an invitation to B.V. (jokerdino)

@HaydnWVN we are good friends. i hope he took it that way :)
@TomWijsman Thanks

1:10 PM
That no one has bothered to fix up the "what to do? what to do?" very open-endedess of the 750GB question looks like we'll be getting some Reversal badges

jrg
@jokerdino shrug i don't ask questions like that, it doesn't mind me not being able to talk about stuff.

@jokerdino looks I was late

@random: It was not fully clear to us yesterday why it has been closed, someone linked that here and we went to reopen it. Could you clarify what you found bad about it? I thought it was for the "polling" part of the description, but I feel unsure about the intention.

@random nothing back from the OP, no interaction so it'll probably get closed anyways ^^

@jrg well, i was just being curious. :) and well, yeah
@Sathya quite a bit..

1:12 PM
@HaydnWVN It's only been 11 hours, OP didn't even had the chance to sleep + work.

@TomWijsman What service are they talking about? Email? Uplink? Courier?

seems more off topic to me now?

@random: The title mentions email (= electronic mail).

or all/any of them... It's far too localised or do we do shipping recommendations? ;)

I think the underlying problem is "How do i move a large file from A to B quickly?"
Which seems like an actual question to me

1:14 PM
For that we have duplicates then

As far as I understand he has a 750 GB .iso like file that he wants to sent through whathever mail service he has (or probably do some [in]direct transfer.

@JourneymanGeek which there are plenty of other questions about...

12
Q: How can I send super large files directly to another computer in the Internet for free?

CruiseI regulary need to transfer very large files (30 GB) to my friend - financial statistics. I don't have any problem with bandwidth: it is very broad here. I did some research in the area, so: 1. I would not use FTP, as it is very tricky to get it working behind a NAT. 2. I would not use Skype/MSN...

Hmm, there's indeed been dupes, think we could better close it like one of those.

@jrg yo man, are we cool or not?

1:16 PM
jrg: @jokerdino burn infidel
^^

o.O

@Sathya: In fact I did delete that comment because it was not right, yes, it takes me 10 minutes in some occasions. Should proof-read them more...

@jokerdino joking ;)

@random: in which case, the question would be to merge or not to merge, and that the 'newer' question might be editable to be a broader scope without losing too much of the original question than the older one.

Isn't it better left until/if the OP returns to clarify & view answers before merging?

1:20 PM
i suspect hit and run

But then again, i have a small bias since i answered that question, and i rather like my answer
naw, he's registered

because he has to email by tmrw which is on the way

that makes it SLIGHTLY less hit and run

@JourneymanGeek The master question, if you only read the last paragraph, is the entirety of the new question

I'm sorry to you (@Sathya), @random, @harrymc for the hassle it has brought, I'm no longer pursuing these kinds of posts, nor comment threads as I've explicitly stated in my profile update. A lot of time and activity has passed, there's been kinks in the cable; I agree.

jrg
1:22 PM
@jokerdino Yeah, we're cool.
I just haven't been paying attention to this window. :P

@jrg ok cool
@jrg i just like the atmosphere here.

@Oliver He was asking about a software, many questions are about software ....

@random: However, moving 30 gb over a network makes sense. 750 gb, less so.
hm?
With 30gb, an online method still makes sense. With 750 gb, its plain madness

@HackToHell All questions of that kind are off-topic.
They just aren't all closed.
Leaving people to believe that it is actually on-topic.

It isn't fun having to shorten a nomination to 1/5 of its length and get negative comments for just that, that makes me try to even the odds in other places. Doing some reviewing (only to coincidally see a meta post about just that pass by) then check out my activity. The past can't be changed, @Sathya. It's a cruel world, I'd hope you can forgive me...

1:26 PM
But it's about a software and the faq permits that...

@HackToHell Love the combination of those words in the title.

@HackToHell Sorry, I don't agree. I feel like the question is a perfect example of "I want this, where do I get it?"

@HackToHell: its about a software rec, not a way to solve a problem. Its a really fine line. He hasn't said what issues he has with the current software. Its not ok to ask what potato peeler to buy to peel tomatos, but its fine to ask how to peel a romato
so to speak

It is a fine line indeed.

@TomWijsman He's trying to be descriptive
@JourneymanGeek Well said, @Oliver I get your point

1:30 PM
hm
speaking of which
Its old, unlikely to be answered...

@JourneymanGeek kill it with fire

@JourneymanGeek dropped a message not to migrate; was migrated by a recently elected mod;

@Sathya excuses?

@Sathya they voted well then!

@Paul LOL
@TomWijsman For the record: I don't have any 'agenda' against you; I don't "hate" you; I have no idea why you seem to think that; one fine day you start arguing all points against me. Also, you didn't have to submit it right away; I bumped into the character limitation during my nomination on Stack Overflow. Edited and posted a bit later.

1:37 PM
Now thats just mean @Paul. Perhaps it should be part of the moderator-to-be election promise that they will respect the faqs of other SE sites

And (Sathya and Tom stuff) is why I hate management , humans are complex

@HackToHell ??

@jokerdino Being a mod/managing people is hard, there is a lot of misunderstandings, especially over the internet

Humans (said with that tone of voice ferengi use to note something distasteful)

@Sathya: For the char limit, I first thought it would go true, but had to learn from here and there that it didn't. I would have though about deleting it and reposting it later, but was afraid that that would cause a permanent withdrawal. But well, it's now in the format that I'd want it to be. I just felt that you were upset about that previous meta post, that's fine, I didn't have anything against any of you at that meta post point either, I just didn't get why a certain decision was taken.

1:40 PM
@HackToHell hm okay

@Paul What have we achieved ??

@Sathya: If you see into the meta post, those were kind of edge cases. Perhaps there are more clear depending on how one's learned to process posts, but I felt them to be positive.

@HackToHell Aqueducts?

Getting a flag reason to tell the exact opposite of what you think, or a question that looks extremely fine kicked; is confusing. I wanted to get clear, why...

@Paul ??

1:42 PM
@HackToHell I have gone from Star Trek references to Monty Python in two steps, feel free to ignore me

@Sathya: My initial reaction, granted, was a bit heated and that's why I'm sorry for that. I know you mean better, but it's the total sum that's a bit upsetting. It doesn't feel well comparing the comment threads on the nomination if you get what I mean. I'm trying to ignore that, though...
thanks Clippy for putting a smile on my face...

heya @slhck

@Paul i got the python reference but not the other, i'm not as geek as i thought :(

Promise me you will spend time on /review in Ask Ubuntu just like @Sathya and you got AU users vote. :-)

1:45 PM
@jokerdino (morn|even)ing :)

@slhck 10pm here. so evening?

@Paul Shit I do not know either :/

@slhck You are demanding optimisation: (mor|eve)ning

@jokerdino Ah, alright, true.
@Paul Good catch :P
We should have an interactive world map showing which users are located where and what time zone they're in.

status-declined

1:47 PM
@slhck What happend to the meta post abt chronological display of chat messages ?

@HackToHell Hm? I don't recall such a thing
@jokerdino Pff, you can easily do this yourself :P

@slhck Yeah everyone can decline it =)

@jokerdino haha.. to be honest I've seen such a map already, but it was for SO, and I forgot where I found it

@slhck stackgeography or stackmaps?

9
Q: Add a way to search for chat messages posted in a certain time range

slhckI would really love to find the first message I've ever posted in Stack Exchange chat, or, more precisely, a particular room. Okay, I admit, I'm a bit nostalgic. However, I can only search for messages containing a certain string, and my "recent" messages don't allow me to scroll back. So, how...

1:51 PM
@HackToHell Oh, that one!
@jokerdino Stackmaps, that's the one!

@slhck there is also stackgeog. :/

Wow
