I realized a couple days ago that I could get a duplexer accessory for my printer. So I got one and installed it. I love the convenience of automatic 2-sided printing. :)

@sidran32 which printer is that?

2:10 AM
duplexing is the bomb ;p

superuser.com/questions/409527/internet-dial-up-need-a-modem is it a bad thing that i'm trying to decide if this is a niche question?

2:37 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thanks for this musicbrainz.org/doc/MusicBrainz_Picard

@JourneymanGeek this is a similar superuser.com/questions/100252/…

lol
@Psycogeek: ahh, so i can still vtc it
still, i'm wondering if its a niche/oldhardware question ;p

3:19 AM
@JourneymanGeek Those are pretty new phone modems, not like the clunky ones of yesteryear, which probably were more forgiving. The information is useless to me today, but if i get a Off-Grid Cabin in the outback, it would be a nessesity item. even if i wouldnt even want one for free today?
Odly enough there exist telephone lines (and power) run to locations that have Zero cell reception. So in those places it is either phone or sattalite, and many of the Sat systems need a telephone to make requests, the satt sending them the data.
err, sat systems that use a combo of modem that send the request, and faster sattalite data that is one way, receiving the data faster than the phone line can

3:50 AM
@Psycogeek HP Deskjet 5150.
It's a nice printer. Had it since college. Works great.
I'll probably even get one of those USB printer server boxes so I can hook it up to my network when I get my own place and reorganize, so I can share it over the network without the need for a computer.

Anyone knows if HDMI adapters work in reverse? For example if HDMI Male to HDMI Female works as HDMI Female to HDMI Male or Mini HDMI to Micro HDMI as Micro HDMI to Mini HDMI?

Thanks.

depends. If its passive, likely
if its active, no

6:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek Thanks.
Anyone knows if this device/converter/whatever allows my smartphone that does not have video output capability to have one?

@Boris_yo the device would have to have some sort of driver and possibly supporting software also, to send the video data out to the USB to begin with.
(the device being the smart phone or computer)
unless it was pure magic , which would be a interesting concept (and cost at least $25) to send a "file" out to the device raw out what would have to be a "host" usb on the phone, and the magic box played the file , or decoded and passed data?

6:30 AM
amazon.com/Menotek-Adapter-IMPROVED-Protocol-Sensation/dp/… <-- a list of phones which are MHL compatable
MHL = Mobile High-definition Link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link Has another list of supporting items.
MHL is connection agnostic (i.e., not tied to a specific type of hardware connector). The first implementations dual-purpose the most popular mobile connection (micro USB) and the most popular HDTV connection (HDMI). Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. Other proprietary and custom connections are also allowed.

7:00 AM
Why some cables USB/HDMI come with signal magnetic ring? Like this one:
What is this for?

@Boris_yo you mean the ferrite choke?
It isnt magnetic is it? the purpose is to reduce electomagnetic interferance, usually they are not needed, some of the way better cables use them, and the way better cables do not have problems from quality so much, so the ones that use them do not need them as much :-)
gizmodo.com/5871162/… I believe they need to be at both end of the cable to be fully effective. I would worry about it more when the cable is very long and becomes a big antenna itself, or around devices that are outputting EM feilds?

7:22 AM
transformers, power supplies, CRT monitors even UPSes, and coiled AC cords, if the wires are laying around any of this stuff, it would be more important. Usually you can just keep your data and video wires away from those things, and not have a problem. And have good copper wires, properly shielded.
Or when the cable is very long and therefore the signal is weak going through it, so any noise would easily effect the signal your trying to pass.

lol, Youtube laid off Justin Bieber :D youtube.com/charts/videos_views?t=a

@HackToHell what did he do, say something bad about google redirections?

lol, they used him and tossed him :P
Quantum Computer are gonna be expensive ;p tomshardware.com/news/…

7:41 AM
@HackToHell I am still waiting for the "crystal" storage, 2 intersecting lasers changing atoms in a clear crystal in 3D to use the entire block structure of the crystal for data storage. Then i can give my girlfriend a drive that looks good on her neck :-)

@Psycogeek lol

some guy pulled it off almost 10 years ago, just because it took 200Sq feet of a lab and 1500W of laser to do it , shouldnt deter the technology.

there's a mild chance of fire ;p

@HackToHell Everything has ramifications, who cares if my nuclear battery goes into meltdown and kills 300 people, as long as it will run my portable device for 10 years at a time :-)

lol ;p

7:46 AM
I am to old to wait for cold fusion. A nice nuclear pebble, and a subminiature steam generator and were good to go.

@Psycogeek too old ? You must be in the late twenties

@HackToHell They have been messing with nuklear nuclearfiles.org/menu/timeline/atomic-discovery/discovery.htm since 500BC , or even earlier when the first caveman found a warm glowing rock and put it in his cave. :-)
Sure his nuts fell off and all his children had 6 fingers, but you gotta start somewhere

rofl

All this talk about it causing genetic mutations, then they want to prove evolution, well which is it :-)

poor guy

7:57 AM
There are a million people dying to go into outerspace, so why bother with a recovery vehicle :-)

Anybody is aware of free offline/online video editing tools that can add special effects? I need to blurr a small part in video.

eheh. TIL you can drag minidumps into blue screen view
On the other hand, i don't know how to make minidumps ;p

ugh, someone is flagging OLD questions again

4:16 PM
@JourneymanGeek Why is that bad?

1 hour later…
5:39 PM
@OliverSalzburg Because the flags are totally wrong.
Dozens of not an answer flags for answers that are very short or wrong.

Nice :P

Pretty sure someone used Data.SE to search for the shortest answers or something like that.

How to change tab in Nautilus explorer? Alt+Tab doesn't seems to work. (Using Ubuntu)

@Santosh alt + number key. Ctrl + PageUp, Ctrl+PageDown also works.

Q: Recording PC's screen in the background?

bartIs there a software like Camtasia Studio that records computer's screen but in the background so user won't notice? I'm using Windows 7, putting it into sleep mode and would love this soft to start just after logging. It would be nice if it could record at least 1-2 hours of work. I'd love som...

:D
Must be research

7:38 PM
@OliverSalzburg That user seems to have no concept of what is legal and what isn't.

7:48 PM
Blah!
How's everyone doing?

8:30 PM
@slhck Hi there

@DanielBeck Hey, how are you?

(better late than never I guess)

Haha.. well, I'll lurk around anyway

@slhck Fine, thanks. Enjoying the long weekend (Thu-Mon for me). How are you?

@DanielBeck Yeah… too bad the weather sucks so I have to stay at home :P I'm doing okay. Had a pretty bad injury involving my radial artery, so I was kinda disabled for the last two weeks.

8:35 PM
@slhck Just discovered this.

@slhck from?

@slhck What happened?

Well, as I was cleaning out the dishwasher, a mug broke and I managed to cut the artery.
Sooo... blood all over the place, it really looked like in a bad splatter movie.

Oh crap.

And you can't just get a few stitches and go home. You need to get an emergency surgery, stay in the hospital for at least a couple of days and have the artery itself get stitched together.
@DanielBeck Given how bad all my adapters look, I might even buy one of these.

8:42 PM
@slhck Now everything's stitched together and holding though, right?

@DanielBeck Yeah, it looks kinda gross, but it should work. I have to play drums on a gig next week and the doctors said I should be fine.
So that's why I wasn't doing a lot for the past two weeks here. But I learned to love the iPhone's speech recognition. It's not as bad as everyone says.

@slhck Siri?

@DanielBeck Yup.

@slhck Still have my 4. I'm so happy with it since ~Christmas 2010 I don't even feel the need for a new one later this year (yet).
So, I have no idea how well it works or doesn't work.

Well, English speech recognition is awesome. But even in German it works pretty well.. colloquial speech etc. I thought it was a nice gimmick first, but I love to use it.
Like, when you're in bed already, lights turned off, and just tap the phone and tell it to set an alarm for tomorrow.

8:54 PM
Hm. Wouldn't work for me. Phone needs to be faaar away from me at night.

@DanielBeck Why that?

Anyway, the power adapter project guys made a mistake. Too few expensive options, and all of them sold out.

I still have to grasp that Kickstarter thing in its entirety.

@slhck I need to have to get up in the morning and walk to the phone (or alarm clock) to turn it off. Doing that requires a minimum level of ... awakeness? Otherwise I won't get out of bed before noon or so.

@DanielBeck Hahaha, okay. That actually makes sense.

8:58 PM
@slhck Someone has a project idea/concept/prototype and needs money to actually produce it. They raise that money by promising $stuff to backers (investors, basically), usually $product they want to create.

@DanielBeck … and the whole thing is working? Like, is there enough investment?

In this case, they had a product idea and created the designs, maybe even a prototype. To make it viable cost-wise, they need to have a production run of 10,000 pieces or so. To make sure they don't risk their own necks by producing and not selling, they're finding investors.
If a project doesn't reach the goal at or before the deadline, nobody pays anything, and the project failed.

Ah, now I get it.

You pledge the money, i.e. promise to pay upon a certain event.

Okay, so you don't pay right away.

9:01 PM
Exactly. Only at deadline time, and only if enough money was raised.
Because of this, Kickstarter is an insane money sink for me.

Haha.. so what did you get out of it already?

@slhck So far, no project failed after funding. I only recently started, and deliveries should start around June.
Sooo... let's see if I find the project I participated...

Wow, there's a lot of money in that.
I like the Mail Pilot idea
Okay, gonna be afk
Good night @DanielBeck

@slhck Good night

9:29 PM
@SimonSheehan It seriously sucks to catch up with the news and other RSS feeds of last week. I have to check the date things were published all the time :-/

I hear you on that one - I'm visiting family at the moment and have been super busy.

My JRE is pointed at /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/jre/bin/java
How do I point it to /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0/jre/bin/java

@OliverSalzburg most of them are crap, it detracts from flags on active questions, and is an obvious attempt at badgewhoring ;p
