12:26 AM
Heh - it's open again!

And people are voting to close, again XD

Well, I have done that once and will leave it to the rest of the community now.

Haha, closed again!
By a mod this time XD

And locked by @nhinkle.
And I've come to a conclusion which puts me on @Linker3000's side... :)

Yay, we win! :D

12:40 AM
give it 20 mins, we'll be on it again

> - A: and B: are useful, because you can use those stations to access diskettes and floppies.
> - The difference between a kibibyte, a kilobit, and a kilobyte is useful for interpreting sizes.
> - The bit count of a byte is not useful because it doesn't have practical use for Super Users.

@SimonSheehan nope. it's locked, so it can't be reopened by non-mods now. which is why we locked it. any question getting closed and reopened that many times in such a short time span is becoming a distraction to the community and needs to be stopped.

And that's where @Linker3000's
> You should only ask practical, answerable questions based on actual problems that you face.
kicks in.

It doesn't seem like an actual problem to me.

So, it's off-topic as it's nor practical nor an actual problem.

12:42 AM
@nhinkle sounds good.

lol, good 'ol Random.

Wil
BOOOO :(

Knowing the amount of bits in a byte doesn't really solve a problem in the Super User context, you either know it or don't know it but there really is not a problem because of not knowing it...

Wil
Right... Going to ask on Stack Overflow...

"I am creating a binary calculator and want to know why..."

ok, haven't thought it through!

The word "practical" is key there, as the word "actual" doesn't really work without it.

Wil
12:45 AM
@TomWijsman I would say that no one really needs to know A or B any more... The last time I used a physical floppy was probably about 7+ years ago - to be honest, I barely use cd/dvds any more... I have used virtual floppys a few times but I think anyone who needs to use them would already know what they are

Even for that purpose, @Wil, knowing why doesn't help you make your calculator in better way... :D
I just didn't saw what was wrong with it just because of not having interpreted the "practical" rule to that extent...

Wil
Anyway, I never argued it shouldn't be closed (sorry if it came across like that) I knew it should, I just felt like I wanted it to be open, which is the whole reason/context of my MSO post... and it looks like from reputation, it is a split!
@TomWijsman Hmmm...

@Wil Yeah, but there might be some people still using it. I agree that it gets to be a bit "Too localized" but well, that's another edge case I don't really care about...
Well, @Wil, the top 3 results on Google all give me an answer so it's kind of "general reference" too, but the "practical" rule already covers it...
Like someone said on your question; we are Q&A, not an encyclopedia.

@Wil it's at +4/-5

@TomWijsman agreed.

Wil
Interesting, thanks
Never seen my name highlighted so many times on one page
Double Mod Lock Out!

12:56 AM
I'll do it once more, @Wil: scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/3627/…

Wil
Interesting... I guess there is just a very fine line

Hmm, @nhinkle: Now I can't prune my comment on that question anymore, can you delete it for me under the reason that it's not my decision any longer? :(

Wil
oh well, still like this site and it won't stop me from coming, just interesting to bring it up.... and if I didn't, it would just annoy me every time I see posts get shut... but... I am happy to go with the communities decision, and it looks the majority don't agree it needs to be changed

@TomWijsman which comment do you want deleted?

Wil
@TomWijsman I can still delete comments? :S

@TomWijsman done
ok, i'm off
see you all later. behave yourselves! :P

Wil
Goodnight!

Thanks, I thought that adding a link to the meta answer might be handy, but it's not really necessary and users will complain/search it anyway otherwise.
@nhinkle: We are behaving, we were just learning how to interpret the FAQ (after gaining so much reputation we still don't completely get it)... :P

Wil
@TomWijsman true, true!

1 hour later…
2:11 AM
mm
i got an excersize ball to sit on
its soo much more comfy than my chair

2 hours later…
4:15 AM
@Sathya you around?
or any other linux users?

4:43 AM
morning @KronoS

mornin! (evening here)
So I got's a question for you...
just installed xbmc live on the HTPC (which is a deriviative of ubuntu 10.04)
I have the OS installed on a SSD, but also have a 2TB drive installed
I need to partition and then permenately mount or automount that 2TB drive
from terminal... how do I do that?

@KronoS use pysdm to make it automount

@Sathya what about partition management of the drive? I need to format it and partition it as a ext4

@KronoS ok, in that case it should get automounted
sorry I didn't read that you needed to partition
while installing you should encounter the partition manager

ya and pysdm needs python to work...
I already installed the OS... and then added the drive

4:50 AM
@KronoS I'll be surprised if Python isn't available.

It wasn't... when I went to run pysdm it failed with a 'floating point exception'
but none the less, isn't there a way to manage partitions from the terminal?

there should be
try fdisk or cfdisk

Hmmm... didn't work... 'unable to open /cfdisk'

you need root privs
aka sudo fdisk or sudo cfdisk
sorry I meant fdisk or cfdisk, they are 2 separate apps
you could also try sudo parted @KronoS but not sure if it'll work

so cfdisk is easier to use... I just don't know what type to use... I need it to be accessible from a Windows Machine

4:59 AM
@KronoS if you need the filesystem to be accessible from Windows then you'll have to use NTFS
there are ... drivers for ext filesystems in Windows though

how do I list connected devices?

?

hmm, i usually check in /dev/

sudo fdisk -l

assuming they are mounted and not connected ._.

5:05 AM
hmm

so sudo fdisk -l worked
so next question... in windows lets say I've logged onto a network share via one user, and now want to log on via another... how do I do that?

5:25 AM
@Sathya... sorry to be a bother... but how to I automatically mount the when it boots?

@KronoS it should mount automatically.
@KronoS not sure I follow this.. ?
@KronoS if it doesn't mount automatically add an entry to /etc/fstab

Hmmm... I'm really noob with this... so I know that I'm not giving good details....

:)

@Sathya so this is what I'm trying to do:
which creates a samba share that I can access via a remote system...

ok

5:31 AM
When I go to access it, I get an error that says it can't connect. I'm assuming that it's not properly setup...
so what I want and think I need to do is mount the 2tb dev to a folder... and then share that folder

I've to step away from my system, I'll be back later.

Ah yes I've read that but that mounts the main drive... which is a SSD... I want to share the 2TB drive...
@Sathya That's fine... I'm still researching

@KronoS might I suggest you post a question on SU? just add contents of /etc/fstab/ & mount in the question

Morning @DMA57361

gah, why do people talk so much while I'm not here
it's so hard to resist reading the transcript to see what I missed

Hehe, there's always a lot to read...

hmmm, missed the 8bit bytes / 1024Ks discussion
oh well, seems to have reached a decent conclusion

7:45 AM
Are we changing the number of bits in a byte then?
I vote for 19 bits to a byte

no, as in this - meta.superuser.com/questions/2607/… - meta discussion ;P
ah, at least all that has spawned a rather good explanation of the differences on superuser.com/questions/287498/…

7:59 AM
meh, we should just close the origin-of one entirely and just keep the difference-of one IMO. Oh well. I hate being late to the "party" :(

Q: Why are migrated questions being shown as closed and migrated instead of just migrated?

SathyaThis seems to be a recent thing - questions migrated are now being shown as "closed off topic" and "migrated to ...". This was before the change. This is how it looks now

the answer here might imply it's an intentional change - meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/92455/… - as they've been "playing" with migration somehow

hmm
@DMA57361 btw I'm glad I don't have to read that....

yeah, I wouldn't bother, looks like it's effectively done now anyway :)

yeah. I had a look at the revision history though
:-|

indeed

9:08 AM
btw @DMA57361 on the question that is flagged, I've dropped a flag on the original SO question asking for clearing migration history & migrate to WP

ah, f/e, was just going to have a quick look but I'll leave that with you then :)
anyway
I've a meeting to run off to in a few mins, best disappear for a bit
cya all later

cya @DMA57361

Q: THE FORMULAR TO MONITOR SOME ONE WORK ON A PUBLIC CYBER CAFE

ENOCH CHINWENDUPLEASE I WOULD LIKE YOUR COMPANY TO PLEASE SEND ME THE METHOD OR FORMULAS I CAN USED TO MONITOR THE WORK GOING ON MY PUBLIC CYBER CAFE IN ODER TO PREVENT THE SECURITY AGENT. ALSO TO QUICKLY REPORT ANY FRAUD. THANKS

I'm not sure if he wants to be able to secure against or spy upon his users there...

The forumula? Google + new keyboard + 1/3 patience + 1/4 "LOL" = good question.

9:24 AM
To whichever mod nuked that question, I now have the Portal fizzler noise going through my head. Thank you :)

btw, anyone knows how these RSA SecurIDs work?

I've used them a bit

right, undeleted the question @Mokubai posted :P with some cleanup
@Mokubai I've been given them to connect to a VPN
find it fascinating
the numbers keep changing every 60 seconds

My impression is that they use a predictable cryptographic routine to generate a number every 60 seconds, because the starting values are the same it is possible to work through a series to get to the current value and so it's relatively easy to have two systems synchronised by them

how does the server know which number's valid for that time frame? And what about edge cases

9:28 AM
effectively a cool one-time password
From what I've seen, the edge cases get ignored and you get pushed back to the reauthentication

hmm
impressive, though

It would be possible for the server to to easily have the last, current and first future number pregenerated so that if they get slightly out of sync then it's not so much of a problem
so all the user sees is their number but the server expects it to be one of three options...
We have them here too, and they have caused me some speculation... everyone assumes they are secure but I'm not convinced.

do you key in just the numbers or a per-user-key+number?

we have a per-key-pin-number+number
or it could be a user number

okay

9:36 AM
hmmm. As it has the key number in the number we pass back resynchronisation is easier for the server, it could (with a bit of work) recalculate the entire chain of numbers (or at least from a last "known good") to get to where your key is now...

you mean predict what the next number might be?

I mean if for some reason the server gets a series of wrong answers it could potentially figure out if they are actually valid but working to the wrong time and so it could synchronise itself to the key
The numbers generated have to be predictable, otherwise the system cannot work
The thing that makes it secure is presumably the starting point and whatever "salt" the server and key have in common

hmm, true

I'd assume that salt value is lasered into the crypto chip in the key at the fab where the chips are made, so that a user cannot just take the key apart to find out what it is. Then somehow that value is given to the server during some initial synchronisation process
Sorry, those things make me think too much.

@Mokubai :) nobody's stopping you :p

9:49 AM
:)
Hmmm, with a bit of statistical analysis I'm pretty sure the server could keep itself very well synchronised to the key
Otherwise we could just say that they work by magic and leave it at that...

10:23 AM
sad.
@Mokubai Jobs' style... it's magical!

What is sad?
@Sathya lol

@Mokubai we have linguistic rooms in here, right

right...

by linguistic, I mean people speaking in their native languages

Wil
Bloody hell, the scams are starting to be British! No Nigerian royal family or similar this time!

10:25 AM
LOL

@Sathya okay, sounds fair enough

@Mokubai bunch of Indian people were dissing and cursing others in Hindi. They got banned from chat.stackoverflow
so they were continuing that in chat.stackexchange
just extended their ban in here as well.
in android on Stack Overflow Chat, 18 hours ago, by balpha
@DrJackal @ManjotSingh @Wanted I've had enough. I'm suspending you from chat for 30 days. Those messages I understand are enough; I don't even want to know what the other ones mean. If you don't know how to behave among human beings, you're not welcome here. You're free to come back after a month if you're ready to show you can behave.

Nice

Wil
@Sathya ce que des bêtises

I just don't understand why people go to public places to do that sort of thing, surely a private chat would be more appropriate...
If only we could tie google translate into the chat system...

10:29 AM
@Mokubai it was semi-private, in the sense it was a Gallery - everyone had read privs, only few had write privs
@Wil joo, tiedän

Wil
oh dear... Think I was asking for this...

@Wil Why does a british kid have a japanese email account?

Wil
@Sathya Can't see it :(
@Mokubai Because it is a scam! :P

@Wil can't see what?

Wil
@Sathya What you wrote in to Google Translate isn't working :(

10:32 AM
o_0

Yeah, I tried a couple of lines from that chat in google translate and it reckons it was turkish....
O_o

heh, it thinks it's spanish
fwiw it's Finnish.

So, to soothe my curiosity, what were those guys actually saying?

@Mokubai I don't speak Hindi so can't say, although it wasn't being very favourable to @Reno.

let's just say it was not very PG-13 material.

10:41 AM

What nice people... :/

and that was just the stuff we could understand...I don't know what kicked it off though.

once they were banned from chat.so they.. made their way to Android room in chat.se
and then moved to a Gallery room
although I didn't know they were there till their messages started getting flagged

There are messages in android.so from 5 days ago so it's been going on for a while by the looks of it... weird

@Mokubai no, it's today
(... 5 days later... 1 hour ago)

in android on Stack Overflow Chat, May 17 at 13:37, by ManjotSingh
@SankarGanesh look when she was uploading images of bunnies then all are saying dont upload images and complaining against reno then why dint he took an action against why is she a girl thats why or she is having good vocabulary of english
when did the first ban happen?

afaik, yesterday night. Not sure of prior bans

That kind of suggests they were kicked out of wherever they were before then...

so, it's a chronic problem then.

so a tempban is appropriate if they won't drop the subject

Looking at question history, they're bound to hit question filters sooner or later

10:52 AM
@Sathya i can not ask question

@Sathya when they get "sorry, we are no longer..." that doesn't stop them asking questions on meta, or prevent them from joining chat, does it?

@tombull89 nope.

@Sathya looking back through the logs seems to suggest they're ongoing offenders as "reno" seems to be a very common word for them, not sure if it's a real word in hindi or if they are constantly referring to whoever reno is...
along with the word "gayyi", which I have my suspicions about...

Reno, stuck at some airport probably
3.2k 1 6 17
@Mokubai "gayyi" == gone, went away in Hindi

ahhh, that's better than what I thought :)

10:54 AM
@DrJackal you need to be more specific

@Sathya did I miss something there?

@Mokubai nope.

i tried with different format of text but i can not it always tell me "•It does not meet our quality standards"

wow, what's going on :D
@DrJackal Well what are you trying to post?

i want to know the reasons why i am banned ?

brb

@slhck plenty :P

@tombull89 Haha, okay let's leave it at that

@slhck Just read through the transcript, you'll get the gist soon.

@tombull89 Yeah I kinda got it.. ugh

11:03 AM
@Sathya i have tried to ask question on meta.stackoverflow.com but i am not success
please help me to know what are the reasons for banned ?

what did you post?

and so it begins.

@Sathya title is what are the different types of reasons for banned a perticular user ?

you need to provide more details than that.

11:36 AM
Hmmm, how do I create a private room?

@Mokubai profile -> create a new room

so far, we've got public, and gallery. I think you have to be a mod to create private.

@tombull89 yep.

Aye, that's what I'm seeing, Public and Gallery with no way to make a room private
oh well

oh god...

11:41 AM
@JourneymanGeek yeah...

geek would get annoyed if people started talking in something other than english on most chats

@JourneymanGeek textspeak is bad enough for me.

even if i learnt to speak english from cartoons allegedly ;)

gah, again with the excessive talking while I'm not here :P

@DMA57361 that happens to me too :P

yeah, I opened a few links during the skim read and am now looking at them too...

it's going a little bit mental.

so I see :(

less than coherant english isn't helping the matter.
for once, I'm glad I'm not a SO mod.

to think, if I had ignored a stray flag on chat, they would be on with their merry(!) ways

@Sathya i don't know have i done mistake by aksing a question on meta ?
i am continuously voiting down

@DrJackal If you are voted down on meta this means that others don't share your opinion

@Sathya Re: RSA SecureIDs - pain in the neck if the fob drifts from the master server. We use these instead: yubico.com/yubikey

but I think there are tons of "put OS on faster drive or not?" questions
hah, found it

@Wil that makes me glad I don't work in PC repair shudder

Wil
haha

I saw inside a smokers PC once, they said it was complaining that the fans weren't working... guess why...

1:31 PM
@Mokubai That is beyond gross - we once refused to deal with a customer's machine under warranty because the inside was covered in sticky tar

@Mokubai Eww, if it's anything like in a smoker's car

@Mokubai One of our local customers was a large salad crop farm and they sent in a faulty data logging PC that lived in a shed - the engineer's repair ticket listed the cause of the fault as 'half a field inside PC'
2

I just looked at it and said "yup, that's dead" and suggested they not put an ashtray in front of the air inlet....

lol

@Linker3000 Lol
Did he list some of the more interesting flora and fauna in the PC?
"On close inspection found the following items, all potential problems:
- Ants
- Spiders
- Snails
- Corn
- Dirt
- Earth
- Mud
- Muck
- 1 CD - Boyzone"

1:37 PM
@Mokubai Not this time. Wierdest one was a keyboard repair (when Olivetti keyboards were 160 GBP each to replace) - the engineer found a whole strip of sandwich dried crust underneath the space bar. We never worked out whether someone managed to push in the bread (no way it would have fallen in) while it was fresh, or whether they cultivated a dry strip expressly for the purpose of jamming the space bar.

haha, good stories @Linker3000

My father once found a young version of a Crotalus Horridus, sleeping, inside a computer case.

1:39 PM
You found one of those in a computer @TomWijsman
O.o
Wow

@Linker3000: tho, keyboards of that era were much tougher than they are now
IIRC digital's keyboards were diskwasher safe

@Linker3000 looking at the keyboards round here I can only imagine that someone prised the spacebar off and put the sandwich crust there then replaced the 'bar

Or at least a safe-to-keep-at-home type, I don't know exactly but it's still weird.
