Q: iPad style devices with > 10" displays?

WhatAre there any mobile devices that come close to the iPad's design, slimness, (relative) weight, and touch navigation but with a display considerably larger than the puny 9.7" that the iPad's display sports? I am aware of "slate" devices like the FujitsuSiemens stylistic series but these are hea...

Shopping recommendation...?

At the very least googling "android tablet" would get you a whole bucketload of suggestions...

9:27 AM
Ah, google was giving me oddness such as "Vietnam Television Company"....

lol
did you jfgi?

I thought I was subtle about it, but yes...

heh
Still can't get synergy working on this mac
I have even tried ktracing to see what it's doing but to no avail
I think I'll post a question.

@MattJenkins : looks like a shopping recommendation to me.

if it isn't shopping recco - it's too localized

9:38 AM
yup
pet peeve. when folk talk about specialised programmes, they need to link

Verily.

Yup.
'I am using FruityFoodleBar to do my SquirdleSplod, and it's not Splodding.'
wtf is FruityFoodleBar???

more importantly, if its a slightly more common issue, people who DON'T use that software can help
erf. I wish i had a job, or was in a slightly less luddite household
got his request to save up for a new laptop turned down

@The Awww....

@MattJenkins : i estimate it'll take me a YEAR to save up with my current allowance. And really, my parents are odd. I can spend my whole allowance but i can't save it for computery stuff.
ponders asking SU for mind control software recommendations

9:52 AM
lol
FFS SU, How many times must I tell you I'm a human?!?!?! beep click

Your order from Scan Computers is due for delivery between 09:58-10:58
09:55 now.... tick tock tick tock
Still haven't emptied the old drives yet though - run out of DVDs (that stack of 100 didn't last long), and I am now filling up any hard drives I can find lying around, and every one's computer is 'donating' space.
I have even resorted to some old 20 gig drives I found in the garage

10:14 AM
Dagnabit, I could've gotten rep from that shopping question :/

but would I have been able to look myself in the mirror

It would have turned you into a vampire?

Great minds travel in the same sewers @MattJenkins
:)
Was exactly what I was about to say

Yup ;)
Drives are here - well, the delivery truck just drove past...
Yup, drives are here.
Now to get to work putting them in...

10:28 AM
does anyone know why drag-and-drop operations might lose text labels in windows (vista)? tried all the usual 'advanced settings' for visual effects, switching on/off aero...
or is that a Q suitable for the main site..

better off asking on SU @geocoin

Hmmm... still got 41 gig to move off here first

thought so. just thought i might get get a quick and dirty ans on here

10:50 AM
Gah - this network copying malarky will be so much faster when my new switch arrives

looks like it might be application specific now... (an application we're developing so not really an SU problem. might be an SO prob. Cheers.)

cool, @geocoin

11:48 AM
Damn, why is it that just because I know about computers that instantly makes me an expert in absolutely anything that people use computers for?
I have just landed myself a graphic design job, just because I can use a computer :/
I'm no graphic designer - still, money is money.

12:09 PM
@MattJenkins Any idea about this one, my Linux is rusty and while I suspect /ect/fstab is the place to look I don't know if/what to do in case of some automount application:
2
Q: Linux mint 10 seems to corrupt ntfs filesystem

kostjaI have linux mint 10 and windows 7 installed on the same hd. First partition is linux, then swap, then the windows system partition and finally an NTFS partition for commonly used data i would like to share between systems. I work almost exlusively on linux, sometimes booting to windows for some...

Not sure on that one atm, sorry

Fair enough, I'll suggest they take a wild stab at the fstab options and hope there isn't an automounter

@Mokubai look at pysdm

@Sathya That looks much nicer than the console hacking I was going to suggest...
@Sathya As you suggested it to me did you want to answer? I'm mainly wanting to get them a good answer rather than get myself rep, though I do like the rep...

@Mokubai go ahead, you seem to have done some background research anyway

Q: How can I melt a jar of honey with heat from my computer?

djeikybIntroduction: I have a large plastic jar of honey. The blasted thing crystallized over the winter. I'd like to de-crystallize it using the heat of my computer. Materials: I have both Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04 installed (32 bit). Common scripting languages (perl, python) and software from Ub...

why closed as off topic?
the practical application is fun, for sure, but the root question is generating heat with a combination of computer software and hardware
Hmm, perhaps best posed in meta

djeikybHow can I melt a jar of honey with heat from my computer? This question was voted closed as off topic. I contend that the question is perfectly on topic. Please consider reopening this question. Reasons: The main question is how to generate heat using a combination of hardware and software. M...

@djeikyb It doesn't really relate to computers to be honest, you'd be just as well off using a saucepan of water and put the jar in that on the cooker... using the computer is just silly
You may as well just ask how many magnifying glasses you'd need to use on a hot day to melt the honey...

that's just one use. mostly i just want to generate an abnormal amount of heat with my computer without breaking it

Then why not ask that?
"What can I do to make my computer as hot as possible without killing it?" You'd get suggestions for stress test type software then

Because having a concrete reason is more engaging than an abstract question? and i really do wish to melt that jar of honey. and, water cools too quickly. i tried that before asking

Would a USB mug warmer do the trick? find-me-a-gift.co.uk/gifts-for-men/work-gift/…

1:12 PM
ah, see, this is another great answer that would be on topic, and lost were it not for the inclusion of my honey jar!

@djeikyb: No, such an answer would not answer your question and would be off-topic.

lol
Mods vs @djeikyb.... Mods win...

You are not using the computer anymore but a device instead, and as per the FAQ such questions aren't allowed (unless they interface, but a warmer solely uses USB power).
There is an interesting part in your question, but you're covering it with fun/silly/off-topic-ness.

A: Please consider reopening question 260822

Tom Wijsman This question was voted closed as off topic. I contend that the question is perfectly on topic. ... If my question can be improved without ruining its spirit, please advise me. Thanks. The problem is that the question "in its current spirit" is off-topic and will result in off-to...

@djeikyb That would be a matter of keeping the water hot, which again you would use the best thing for to keep the water hot, not the hardest thing...
Why do you use water? Because you get a proper surround, rather than components touching the jar at single places...

Unfortunately honey in a jar floats, so it still doesn't get a proper surround. A convection oven set for 110F would probably be the best solution outside the parameters of my question here

Well, you could argue that you place the jar on top of a hard disk (multiple won't have much more effect, still the heat is neglicible in comparison with water) or a computer (which doesn't really give of much heat).
@djeikyb:

1:22 PM
i liked the answer of surrounding the jar with hard disks

You would heat the jar, and the jar heats the honey.
Doesn't matter if you use a water tub or an oven then...

@David worth mentioning Mods have not stepped in

@Sathya well, @TomWijsman and others are at sufficient points to have mod-like powers. i respect their opinions as probably representing the community, however heartily i disagree with those opinions :D

I disagree that 10k-privs are Mod like. Nowhere close, tbh

oh. i misinterpreted his points to be 20k+. oops

1:34 PM
Why are we heating jars of honey? Maybe I don't want to know?!
Afternoon folks, good evening Sathya!

hey @Linker3000!

RAM is giving me a headache...if it put some DDR2 533MHZ in a board which only support 600/800MHZ what will the computer do? There's no beep codes :'(

1:50 PM
@tombull89 Hard to say: may not boot, may be unstable, might manage to work OK - depends on many things.

@Sathya Thanks for pointing me at PySDM, looks like it did the trick :)

@tombull89 as @Linker3000 said, difficult to say. Some downclock and synchronize, some go boom
@Mokubai aha, good to hear
good answer there @Mokubai

It feels longwinded, but I couldn't think of any other way to write it...
Plus, you gave the tool for the job...
Maybe I should add a "Citations" section at the bottom and link to the chat log...

@Sathya @Linker3000 cheers, guys. Only recently realised that the RAM wasn't the right speeds as no video output on a new motherboard and so I checked the manual for anything "off".
I'll have a dig and see if i've got any 600/800

Anyone here have experience with large mysql tables here?

2:05 PM
@Mokubai Totally agree with you @Mokubai :)

@MattJenkins ?
You playing with something?

Just been installing my 3 nice shiny new 2TB disks

No mysql experts today?

@oshirowanen I am normally, but a tad busy today

2:08 PM
you're at the wrong place, perhaps @oshirowanen you should try @ asking at stackoverflow.com , else drop by chat.stackoverflow.com

@Matt, ok.

@MattJenkins Enjoy - watch the airflow - I had two 2TB drives that got very hot until I sorted out a rear case fan

and @Sathya

@Linker3000 these are green ones, so they spin slowly.
@oshirowanen What's the problem? If it's easy I may be able to help you

(also, define "large" @oshirowanen )

2:11 PM
@MattJenkins The hotties were ST3250410AS

@Matt and @Sathya, I am designing an app, which will quickly end up having 10,000,000,000 rows. the table will simply be id=bigint unsigned, col1=varchar(100), col2=varchar(100). If I do select * from big_table where id = 5000000000, will the query be able to get the row quickly, or will it take a long time?

@Sathya, for some reason, I thought @TomWij was a Mod... lol... But anyways, wan't one of the people who voted to close the question a Mod. Normally there is at least one. Maybe there wasn't...

@oshirowanen can't say

@oshirowanen If you have an index on id then it should do, yes
@oshirowanen be quick, that is.
@oshirowanen But make sure your my.cnf is set up for huge datasets

2:14 PM
@MattJenkins Quick as in milliseconds, or quick as in minutes, if id is indexed?

@oshirowanen t-scripts.com/mysql
@oshirowanen I would say no more than seconds, possibly only milliseconds

"OSX" or "OS X"? I'm a PC, and am ignorant.

OS X @LordTorgamus

@MattJenkins Thanks for the link.

@Sathya Ah, very good.

2:17 PM
@LordTorgamus FreeBSD+Fancy-GUI ;)
Oooh... My new switch has been dispatched...

2:33 PM
it appears that my brother has convinced my mom i need a new laptop ;p

@TheJourneymangeek Yay!!!!!!! Go Your Brother!!!!!
Hmmm... In linux how can I image a USB disk with dd? dd if=/dev/sdd of=disk1.img just returns immediately with 0 blocks read.
Ok, it's working now. For some reason linux hadn't probed the disk properly.

2:49 PM
silly

@MattJenkins : he's fairly awesome, especially now XD
funny thing is the laptop i want isn't out yet, and mom still needs to convince dad ;p

btw, @Wil you should know your blog comments link is not visible in Chrome

@MattJenkins : story of my life the past few years. Hope is a WONDERFUL feeling when it comes to hardware XD

2:53 PM
@Sathya Just for giggles, that page runs better in IE9 than FF4 on my machine...
FF4=chugga chugga, IE9 = smooth as ice

@Mokubai it's smoother in IE9 but can't make out jackshit

Yeah, the BG is a bit screwy... so, fails all round I believe...
How does Chrome cope?

it stutters a bit. Chrome v/s IE9 is probably like 24fp vs/ 20 fps

Yeah, better than FF, worse than IE frame-rate wise...
but at least the background works

3:00 PM
it actually runs faster on FF4 RC than CHrome
although I do have GPU acceleration disabled in Chrome

Urgh, dentist.
Catch you all later....

thanks for the head start ;p

Good morning, everyone.

3:18 PM
LO @MarkSzymanski

Hi, @MattJenkins. How are you?

hmm
FF4, yay or nay? ;p

That's what I get intermittantly with FF4

3:20 PM
@MattJenkins: o.o

that looks nay
what will i do without SU? ;p

While I am typing it sometimes flashes to that sort of thing

3:33 PM
Yay for redundant comments!!!!!
device tap0; # Device tap0

lol
hm, that didn't work as planned

amusing question, but the answer is really a pan of water ;p

$bronze_badge_count += 2

3:56 PM
hmm
quite nice
/me approves of FF4, though some retraining will be required

4:39 PM
/me is seeing random graphical corruption in FF4 in other sites as well.

5:27 PM
/me still gets Flash-related glitches here and there, but is glad the Maemo version is finally starting up fairly fast.
^^ Suppose I should update it.

5:44 PM
Someone awesome: make me a data.se query that lists our top 10 users by answer count

you mean the top 10 answerers @IvoFlipse?

yup

yikes :P

found it
hopefully my next interview is with HarryMC, who simply has a staggering amount of answers

Is that acceptable?

5:53 PM
Yup, looks nice
You can never have too much Oranje in your images :P
and I'm sure our Queen would agree with that

Q: Super User Questions of the Week #9

Ivo FlipseNow we're into post 9 of the "Top Question" of Super User in the Super User blog. Please post and vote for your favorite question for this week. Please post any question that you feel is of worth and the reason why. Try not to promote your own questions or answers for publicity sake. We are lo...

@IvoFlipse Just using official imagery, mainly. :-)

2 hours later…
8:00 PM
yawn

lo @BloodPhilia

What's up? :D

Bored outta my skull :(

Go write me a nice midweek blog post @MattJenkins :P

8:10 PM
Subject?

8:27 PM
I can't find the hot tab for Super User anymore, I was looking for another question that's worth it

@IvoFlipse Just check some random user's top questions

d'oh, it's on the front page, not on the Questions page :P

:P
@IvoFlipse Lolol

Q: Any shortcut for "cd .." ?

user35538Is there any shortcut for cd ..?

what's so special about this one?
does anybody know anything about USB flash drives? :P

Q: Why are USB flash drives so much slower than Solid State Drives?

JonasFrom what I understand, USB flash drives and Solid State Drives are based on similar technologies, NAND flash memory. But, USB flash drives are usually quite slow, with a read and write speed of 10-25MB per second, while Solid State Drives are usually very fast, about 200-600MB per second. Why ...

I guess we can't convince anyone to throw ants in their keyboard right?

I do have an old keyboard here I could sacrifice...
Sprinkle sugar in it and leave it in the garden...

8:34 PM
well it's not exactly the season for ants :P

Well, we could always poll the community for anyone with an ant farm :D

Maybe we should just wait for the warmer weather

I guess we should :P

I had a little grub inside my monitor last summer
I'd see him crawling around inside
No idea what became of him
I got quite fond of him

@MattJenkins My friend had one of those
He pressed the screen to feel if it was on the outside
effectively squashing the bug on the inside
Leaving a permanent bug corpse stain between the sheets of his LCD

8:37 PM
Oh dear

@MattJenkins perhaps this is a topic you know more about:

Q: How does a hard drive retain information after being formatted?

Dean Companies try to zero-fill their hard drives several times when they decommission them, why? Surely one pass of zero-fill would do the job exactly as they need. I understand the reasoning for the companies to do it but the need to run it several times. Could someone explain the process to help me...

And does anyone have any experience with ThinApp?

Q: How do Microsoft Word and Excel run without any installation?

SathyaI was having a discussion on bookmarks in Word with a friend, and he suggested me to check out his implementation of a query in Word. Since I did not have Microsoft Word installed, I told him I don't have Word so I won't be able to test it. To this, he mentioned that he'll send the executables a...

@IvoFlipse Hmmm... tricky one... been a while since I did any theoretical physics...

well I meant more about the drive formatting in general not the exact physics behind it

Well, the physics behind it is what makes it important

@IvoFlipse Any topic for me? =/ I can't think of anything

8:46 PM
make your pick @BloodPhilia
I just picked ones with high views

Q: Is it safe to keep speakers behind a monitor

SpongeBob SquarePantsCurrently my Computer is kept on a small table. The Speakers are kept behind my monitor (LCD). So is it safe to play a song or something on high volume (with high bass) ? Will it affect my LCD ? My speaker:

Now for any topic I can actually write a blog post about xD

Q: Why can't graphics cards just have more memory?

Tom GullenSomething I never understood, why do graphics cards usually have small amounts of memory on them? I know memory isn't everything, but surely it's pretty cheap just to load 4gb of memory on any old graphics card?

Well probably the post you know most about: superuser.com/questions/195387/…

@IvoFlipse haha xD obviously XD

Simply show an example from your own router

@IvoFlipse I just might do some WiFi security stuff ;D

8:49 PM
I'm pretty sure anyone here can write a blog post from their own 'best' answers

@IvoFlipse I know I know, but somehow that feels like copypasta =P

why? you're finally allowed some artistic freedom to voice an opinion or to give some background info you can never fit in an answer

hey guys
any mac / vine server specialists in here? :D

@Shaharyar Hey (:

@BloodPhilia mmmmmmmmm...... pasta......... gahhhhh
3

8:55 PM
@IvoFlipse Why is there no visual editor enabled in the blog back-end?

Visual Editor? I've never seen one on a WP site
just use Windows Live Writer

@IvoFlipse Lol

Personally I think you should upgrade to Drupal ;)

@Ivoflipse The top = SU blog, bottom = my own WP installation
@MattJenkins You mean downgrade?

@BloodPhilia slaps

9:09 PM
@IvoFlipse I ran out of time before I ever got around to finishing an actual slipstream. :/
So much easier just to grab a slipstreamed image directly from MS. I flagged that post as wiki hoping someone else could step in and complete (or fix) it basically, heh
(seems that no one has stepped up to do that yet though)

ah well, but surely there is some use to making slipstreamed versions of Windows? :P

shrug, probably :P
if you actually go through the steps there, the cabs explode into hundreds of thousands of files lol
it's a huge mess really

@IvoFlipse which categories should I chose for my Wi-Fi security post :D

Perhaps networking or something :S

@IvoFlipse mkay

9:15 PM
hmm anything else that might be blog worthy @briankb? ;)

@IvoFlipse I can't add categories =(
I'm such a noob at not having god powers on systems :'(

do you guys know of any bug that causes the 'o' letter to not work on vine server?

sorry if I break any updates @BloodPhilia :P

Sorry @Shaharyar, I don't even know what vine server is :P

oh
it allows you to remotely control your mac computer from a pc
using VNC

9:20 PM
@IvoFlipse depends on what you're looking for. does it have to be a useful answer? you could write about how slipstreaming win7 is a big hairy mess :P

just Matt's interview
since I'm sort of a fan of his lol

lol, and rightly so :P

lol
I have a fan.... :S

9:25 PM
hahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!
Serves the little fkr right!

indeed
I missed the first part when they showed it on tv
well if you have any ideas for a blog post (preferably based on an question/answer) I'm all ears

Am I crazy for thinking that it would be a good idea that rep gained from upvotes on edited questions/answers should go to the OP and editor(s)?

yes, because I would edit every post from HarryMC before he get's his bounty
and/or John Ts + Wils posts == winning!

@MarkSzymanski Oh, there are soooo many full stops I could add to posts!!!

Heh, good points @IvoFlipse and @Linker3000.

9:36 PM
Oh, and Hi everyone

Quick question

@MarkSzymanski don't you have some expertise that we can abuse for the blog?

How do you keep an element from a master page over an element from a normal page in ID CS5

@IvoFlipse: What?

other than your ridiculous 50 upvotes for the cd.. question :P

9:37 PM
Heh, yeah, I'm surprised at how popular that answer of mine was XD
But, what do you mean by "expertise we can abuse for the blog"? xD

@digitxp Not sure you can - mind you haven't used ID for about 8 months

@MarkSzymanski Expert opinion?
Nvm, since it was a B&W drawing I just set the blend mode to multiply

Expert opinion? On what exactly? I don't really consider myself to be an expert on anything XD

@digitxp In PM and ID, master page items were/always behind normal page elements AFAIK.

@IvoFlipse: Well, technically it was 51 upvotes, but someone downvoted :P

9:42 PM
Someone needs to blog about the different RAM capabilities between 32 bit and 64 bit OSes so we avoid the never ending questions about why an XP (32) machine can't see the 256GB RAM just installed.

@Linker3000, what are you waiting for!

I'm a bit confused. What exactly is the SU blog?

@IvoFlipse I knew that was coming! OK, watch this space....

blog.superuser.com @MarkSzymanski

@IvoFlipse: I know, but what is it all about?

9:49 PM
@Linker3000 I fixed your account btw
what do you want it to be about?

I don't know XD

this is why I don't have a blog!

@IvoFlipse I've already got the introduction AND the conclusion of my blog post ;D Check out meh concept

why's that @briankb?
looks nice @BloodPhilia, we just need to format those SU links, but that's moot at this moment ;)

@IvoFlipse because I could never answer "what's your blog about" heh

9:59 PM
the Super User blog is about putting users and their questions in the spotlight, because getting upvotes isn't enough to reward their awesomeness!
like @Wil who coded up a Dropbox chat client in 4 hours!

Wil
HiHi!
A serious developer could of done it quicker! it took me ages to figure out how to amend the XML file!
@Sathya I have no idea why, but seen that before - it is a bug with Blogger when accessed through some proxy servers

So just heard from Microsoft... It's a no go :(

@KronoS What did you hear?

awh too bad @KronoS did they tell why?

@BloodPhilia I applied for an internship with them... they said no

Wil
10:08 PM
@KronoS Sorry to hear that :(

@KronoS Oh yugh :( Why no

@IvoFlipse no they just sent out the general rejection email

darn
guess that if Jeff doesn't have any internships, you'll have to intern with me :P

@Wil @BloodPhilia eh it's all good... I've still got Flipse R&D

@KronoS Bad news KronoS - sorry to hear that

10:10 PM
@Linker3000 again it's all good... it's not the end of the world...
at least now I can do the google/microsoft cloud services blog post without any ill feelings
2

@KronoS Good attitude

You could compare them with Open Office and Office 2010, to see what's the best office suite

Microsoft is too busy suing Barnes & Noble over pantent use in Nook/Android :/

priorities priorities :P

@IvoFlipse I like that idea

10:18 PM
open office is libre office now, isn't it?

@briankb Nope they are separate apps

ah

well pick Libre Office, because I hate companies that sue Android :P

@IvoFlipse Sounds like a plan!
@briankb Most of the Open Office Core devs jumped ship and created Libre Officewhen Oracle started screwing around with their inherited (from Sun) Open Source projects.

and rightly so :P
screw Oracle

10:25 PM
@IvoFlipse my only prob with android... is the fact that they stole straight from flash I believe

stole from flash? you mean java's VM?

@IvoFlipse ah yes... java... knew it was something like that
and couldn't remember

@KronoS I'm not so sure that was stealing, rather than just avoiding stupid patents that Sun never intended to enforce. Oracle on the other, is taking the Microsoft route with patents

@briankb I really don't know what's going specifically just what I've heard... so I'm not really at liberty to comment much more

well @briankb has a point, though it's not a simple case

10:35 PM
