hello @Greg, @Christopher welcome to Root Access - Super User's Chat!

@studiohack morning

evening @Greg :P

00:33 here

England?

Yep

12:34 AM
nice...

Always interesting to find out where others are

in the States myself

Well, I've finally put an end to my regex problems so must go catch some sleep!
Yes, I know it's sad to stay up past midnight on a Friday to fix regular expressions ...

'nite @Greg!

12:51 AM
Quiet friday night

lol
Math is cool. It's always fun when you learn some new mind blowing property of numbers and such. Like for example:
Turn a sphere inside out: youtube.com/watch?v=R_w4HYXuo9M

about to tune into burn notice
@iglvzx I'm not even sure how to make heads or tails of it, I'm not smart enough :P

@studiohack Ha. Well, I've got dinner. Have a good night!

dinner soon for myself as well. have a good one @iglvzx :)
anyways...time marches on.

4 hours later…
4:52 AM
@iglvzx you still around?
(probably not... this room is baren)

5:40 AM
@nhinkle Hey. What's up?
(By the way, does Stack Exchage have a message system? It would be handy)

well, sort of
we use @tags in some situations

@JourneymanGeek Thanks.

but they'd need to be on chat i think
or answered to a question

5:59 AM
Oh, I was wondering about a question you'd flagged @iglvzx. The one about the guy trying to put C:\users on his hard drive.
But I already resolved it - just edited it to be slightly more intelligible and left a comment.
Also... um... this is the message system?

6:20 AM
@nhinkle Ah. Yeah. I flagged it because it was hard to decipher their situation.

7:02 AM
more of an fyi, I'm on a 2 week vacation, reduced presence. Try to behave :P
ciao!

Man... I forgot how much Windows XP setup stucks.

3 hours later…
10:14 AM
@nhinkle: eh. its like... 10 years old
hm
i wish people would let me know why i got downvoted ><

ahh. Google translate had troubles with it ><

@JourneymanGeek: It's in English now... :)

needs reopen votes ;p
or i need to cast summon mod.
my brother may be getting one of these asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G74SX/#specifications

That looks like an improved model over my sister's old laptop.

I look forward to setting it up ;p
(if i am asked to)

Q: How do I identify which YouTube videos I have watched?

Tom WijsmanYouTube has broken its functionality to be able to remove videos I've seen and am subscribed to. Now I want to implement such behavior myself using a GreaseMonkey script. I'm still left without one problem, which is: How to identify whether I already clicked on a video? Can I simply remove al...

Q: How do I make Greasemonkey do something when an AJAX call returns?

Tom WijsmanOn YouTube, when I click trending it makes an AJAX call to fetch the trending videos. Now, I've made a script that will remove any videos that I've already seen. That script works fine for the frontpage, but I want the script to also be executed when I click trending.

Stupid that the took that first feature away. Imma build my own YouTube... xD

with blackjack and hookers? ;p

@JourneymanGeek: Nah... My first line of code is $('#ad_creative_2').remove();. xD
And then some short code to load all images on the right side. Because YouTube has some nifty pre-loading code so it doesn't load things that are not on the screen...
Ah, seems I now have that same problem on the feed itself. Got to use good old copy/paste...

5 hours later…
8:25 PM
@Sathya Nice! If you/others haven't seen it, there is also this! - towel.blinkenlights.nl

@WilliamHilsum Welcome back! Haven't seen you for a few weeks :p
On that note, I'm going out to buy a printer, be back later.

@SimonSheehan hehe, hi! Not enough hours in the day since I started my new job :( ... but, I am really enjoying it... I will probably be slipping down the ranks on SU before too long.... I keep SU chat open and meant to catch up (I always used to skim read when I got back...) but, just not enough time - cutting my losses on chat/twitter... Just can't keep up!
@SimonSheehan Have fun! I still need to get a new one :/ I hate printer shopping - all seem to be as rubbish as each other

Or maybe im not. Haha. Apparently later.
@WilliamHilsum New job eh? What are you doing?

@SimonSheehan hyperoptic.com - I am a consultant there! Doing a bit of everything really... sys admin, server stuff, general troubleshooting and advice.

@WilliamHilsum Do they give you the 1GB connection free? ;)
@WilliamHilsum Also, thats great! Do you like it?

8:37 PM
@SimonSheehan hehe, I wish!!! We are getting it installed in the office very shortly (only just moved here and it takes a while to plan/get), but, I live too far away from Central London for it... give the company a few years and I hope I will get it - but, apart from the travel (Just over 3 hours a day), I just love it there - the people are so friendly and I have just always wanted to work for a company doing something exciting/ground breaking.

@WilliamHilsum 3 hours, holy :O How do you get there? Do you think you will move?

@SimonSheehan Sorry... 3 hours in total! just over 1.5 hours each way door to door.. annoying as well as it costs so much for travel and I always have to stand on the train :( .... (but... I am finally catching up with the SO podcasts!). Honestly, I don't think I would move - whilst I love the job, and I guess they are happy with me as my one month contract has been extended to 6 months, I don't see it getting extended any longer :( There are quite a few jobs that need doing now as it is a

@WilliamHilsum Ah, well we will see, hopefully it extends and you keep enjoying it :)

young company, but, when these things are in place, I just don't see how there will be enough work for them to justify hiring me :( ... I hope I am wrong, but, I have to be realistic.

Yeah, fair enough.

8:45 PM
but... if I was there longer term, I probably would try to move nearer... there is some nice-ish property near by that isn't too expensive. ... and (complicated matters...) there isn't much keeping me where I am at the moment.

@WilliamHilsum Definitely a change from what you normally do though, right?

@SimonSheehan Not 100% - I am not an employee, they are hiring me through my company and I am still doing other things at the same time (although a lot less!)... and, it is pretty much the same as I have done before, just, much longer term. In the past few years, I don't think I have had a contract for more than 3 weeks (excluding on going support ones/that is very different)... so... same things, just all for one client
If that makes any sense :/ Sort of nicer as when I am in places for 3 weeks, I just don't really make friends/keep contacts e.t.c. and, I am going to sound so sad - but, had my first company Christmas party which was really nice!

@WilliamHilsum Oh okay - I wasn't actually sure what you did before :p

Anyway, enough about me... how is it going with you!? Were you looking for a job when we last chatted? (I think :/ )

@WilliamHilsum I was a bit, but there doesn't seem to be much lately. I'm trying more after Christmas, since I get my drivers license (pending I pass the test), on January 6th.

8:52 PM
@SimonSheehan Sorry about that, but, cool with the driving!... Good luck!

@WilliamHilsum yeah! Driving in the Canadian winter will be interesting :p

ohhh... seen that a bit on TV! wow!
surely the examiner will go easy because of that? :/

yeah, I've heard they do :p
Depends on how the conditions are. Lately, conditions have been bizarre :p
One day we had teeming rain that turned into a load of snow, which melted before the afternoon was over

@SimonSheehan hehe.. weather world wide has been crazy - Whilst I LOVE snow over here, now I am working (and get paid by the day worked!) I am sort of worried about it!!!

@WilliamHilsum Uh oh.. Are trains usually affected by it?

8:57 PM
@SimonSheehan Yeah!

@WilliamHilsum Ohh.. Takes quite a lot of snow to shut anything down here

Look at my blog when I was meant to have Jury Service! .... blog.williamhilsum.com/2009/02/first-day-of-jury-service.html
@SimonSheehan I can imagine Canada being prepared for it!

@WilliamHilsum Haha. It's funny when (usually Americans), tell me that an inch of snow closes the school :p

@SimonSheehan pretty much like that here!

@WilliamHilsum Haha. Every kid here thinks that they get a snow day when it snows, but they all live close to the school! then I'm the kid who walks 30 minutes to get there

9:02 PM
morning

morning @JourneymanGeek !

@JourneymanGeek Morning!
@SimonSheehan Lol! ouch...

Also, does anyone know a way of syncing my Google Calender/Contacts with outlook?

@SimonSheehan: uphill both ways....

I figured if Outlook 2010 was on my system, may as well use it
@JourneymanGeek Absolutely :p

9:03 PM
outlook is awesome @SimonSheehan - I use 2007 myself

@studiohack We got Office 2010 Professional for $10... its fancy!

@SimonSheehan lucky

@studiohack Indeed, I thought it was neat. I was using Office 2000 up until...2 years ago ;p

lol
@SimonSheehan: we have one office 97 system
and we can't upgrade it to anything ;p

@JourneymanGeek I still have office 1997 installed :P

9:06 PM
@JourneymanGeek We had this ancient laptop in the other day that that had Office 93 or something :P

never heard of 93

@SimonSheehan Hmm... I had so many problems trying that... but, this looks like it may work - google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=89955

@studiohack: its the pentium M that was stuck with the cops ;p

@WilliamHilsum I'll take a look, might work.

tried libre but performance was beyond terrible

9:09 PM
Actually I've got a ton of software on here I've never used...

Right, on with work! Good catching up with you Simon!

@WilliamHilsum You too, take care!

@SimonSheehan: tsk tsk ;p

laters @WilliamHilsum :)

@JourneymanGeek Its all MS and Adobe stuff :p

9:10 PM
never? ;p

I just found Adobe Indesign... Launching it now to see what it does.

man, you have all this software... lol

Found out I had Microsoft Publisher the other day... didn't know that existed still.

9:11 PM
Hm, Indesign could definitely be useful for assignments.
@studiohack I just get it free/cheap usually :p

student discounts <3

Haha.

hm, this is fun. chrome canary seems to crash whenever i type something into the omnibar

Very odd. Is that the newest one?
I use Chromium but I never update... I figured it auto updated.

it does. and its canary ;p
so, super unstable

9:16 PM
Ahh
So whats everyone up to on this lovely Saturday?

up too early ;p
cause i was up too early yesterday, so napped
so i had coffee
which meant...
needs to beat the sleep cycle into submission

My summer sleep was like that :P
I went to sleep every night at 4am.
Then when I actually had to go to sleep early for school, I was badly messed up
Welcome @NiekBergman

9:38 PM
i got to mess with a mac when i was checking prices for my brother. I've come to the conclusion i hate their keyboard (and mouse) ;p

lol, my brother likes my Zunes well enough that he bought one. :P
@JourneymanGeek good! :P

9:57 PM
and one of the bugs in my 'thinkintosh' setup is... a feature

10:19 PM
anyone want some granola by studiohack? :P

hm, joy. pasting stuff does web page crashyness in canary

11:07 PM
Anyone here?
I'm doing a paper and need some sources for statistics.
Where can I get stats on desktop/laptop vendor marketshare?

11:25 PM
Hm, as VMware Server is EOL, do you guys recommend any replacement for virtualizing stuff on an Ubuntu Server without graphical interface?

@slhck So you want a program that does virtualization?

@SimonSheehan Well, yeah, but it needs to be similar to VMware Server, thus, without needing a GUI
and I'm somewhat confused about the new VMware line of products

@slhck Does Virtualbox do that perhaps?
Or Xen?

@Moshe There are quite a few pages that cite "Gardner and IDC"

@slhck You can use virtualbox without a GUI it appears kernelhardware.org/virtualbox-headless-vm

11:31 PM
@SimonSheehan Dunno if VB runs headless … but Xen seems worth a try. Depends on how easy it is to setup

Since VB actually can be done all from command line using vboxmanage

Performance is probably the most critical issue there

Ah, good point. I hear a lot of good things about Xen.

Funny story though
today the virtualized mail server in our office didn'T boot up
and I couldn't start it anymore
turns out, the guy who wrote the backup script didn't include a check on whether the mount of our NAS succeeded, and so the VM backed itself up on the server, and not on the NAS, which meant that the server was 100% full
and upon rebooting, nothing would work

yikes

11:34 PM
and VMware has some weird problems anyway, so we quickly need to switch
and I need to tell the people that they should buy new hard drives for that server. 250GB for a mail server is just not enough.

How many people are using this email server?

Well, it's a small office with … 30 users minimum

The whole system's flawed, and I'm unfortunately the only one who knows about that stuff
I got them to buy a real NAS after all, since having a 300GB desktop PC is not the solution for office file sharing.

Dear god no.
Thats an awful idea :p
They should really get you a real server.

11:37 PM
@slhck: you can run virtualbox headless

and running a really old Pentium III PC is not a good router/firewall, if its hard drive already failed once
@JourneymanGeek Good to know, yeah. The link Simon sent me seems to explain that.

@SimonSheehan @slhck: my office backup will be... my main home desktop

So, but we're getting there. Getting a real dedicated firewall. A real NAS. Buying a new server that consolidates everything with virtualization.

@slhck: you may need to script the VMs to run on startup (i use crontab), and it has a bunch of odd dependancies if you run it on a non gui system though

@JourneymanGeek Hm, we could deal with that as long as it's not too hard to configure
I read about VMware ESXI but I don't know if that's what we need/want

11:40 PM
@slhck: on *nixes its painless

ESXI or the configuration of VBox?

on windows, there's a few issues, like no obvious way to not have a window open while running headless

Pretty cool. Sounds like fun @slhck, do you get to run/setup it all?

I think@WilliamHilsum has experience with ESXI
virtualbox

@SimonSheehan I don' t really have the time anymore. I quit my job there months ago, but lacking replacement, I still do their IT stuff for them
@WilliamHilsum If you have a few minutes, ping me, got some questions about ESXI :)

11:42 PM
@slhck This is at the school right?

Hi here @slhck ... sort of! @JourneymanGeek thanks!

@SimonSheehan No, that's a small consulting company
@WilliamHilsum Is there a free version that's sufficient for virtualizing a few servers, like … 3 maximum?
@SimonSheehan But I used to do a lot of different jobs :)

@slhck: that they have

Also depends what your running on said servers :p
@slhck Ah okay :p

and that ;p

11:43 PM
@slhck It is suitable for much much more! ... Only limitations are 24 or 32 or 36GB of ram (I am always forgetting!), no advanced features like HA/VMotion... but... you get snapshots and all the basic features you need

@WilliamHilsum Sounds fine. We'll never have that much RAM anyway, haha

Think of ESXi free as a faster, slightly better, enterprise grade version of VMWare Workstation.

@slhck yep

Ok. Sounds like a plan. How can I manage the actual VM data? is it accessible, like, can I back it up remotely using standard *nix tools?

11:50 PM
@slhck Hmm... you can SSH in to a ESX box, but, I wouldn't recommend it

Okay, we have a SMB/NFS NAS, so that would be the target for our VM snapshots.

As for backing up, Personally, I use Iscsi and do that on the NAS level... I am not sure of a better approach for just a single box/using a local data store... I know there are loads of third party tools out there
To be honest, I think you sort of have to treat it like a physical box, backup and more should be done at the software layer inside a VM. If you want anything super smart at the hypervisor level, it is really a premium feature - I know there are some advanced features for backing up, but, personally, I have never used them

Oh, fair enough
I mean, yeah, I could back up the actual mail data. That's what we do anyway.
But having a VM snapshot is always nice of course.
oh, important thing – can I just take an existing VMware Server VM and run it?
