@Mr.Bultitude Well, I couldn't stop myself. Doesn't say much for my self-discipline, but hopefully my answer is helpful!
There's a lot more in the sources on the general question of the virgin birth and why it's reasonable to believe that Paul believed it, so there's a lot more reading there for the interested student.

@Nathaniel Very helpful, thanks very much.
Frame's comment that "Christology in general was not a particularly controversial matter among the Christians" seems dubious at first glance, but I guess the great Christological debates came centuries after Paul. Still, I wonder if that statement would be as distracting for others as it was initially for me, and if it could use a citation or clarification of some kind.
I also find it interesting that Weiss (quoted by Knowling) evidently doesn't view John 8:41 as an accusation of Jesus' illegitimacy, as many commentators have. I've heard people cite the descriptions of Jesus as the "son of Mary" in the Gospels in a similar fashion.
Lastly, I wonder if a little bit of discussion of why those authors think Paul knew about the virgin birth would help round it out. I understand that it's not what the question is directly about, but it's a very closely related issue, and addressing it might help quell readers' lingering doubts about the subject at hand.

@Mr.Bultitude Yes, I thought so too... then while putting it together I saw that L. M. Sweet points out that Paul doesn't deal with the sinlessness of Jesus that much either. I'll think about how to restructure it and add a brief bit on the general argument.
