@ArtOfCode that would be pretty damn cool and useful
It would be even better if we could write our statements in ruby rather than SQL

@angussidney no. Most of us know SQL, but not Ruby. If @Art's solution supports both, that's fine with me.
@ArtOfCode excellent idea!

Ruby isn't that hard to learn, and it takes some of the boring-ness out of SQL, but meh.

Ruby is totally worth learning

ruby is also more dangerous than SQL

8:50 PM
I tend to agree with Glorfindel, plus Ruby is also exponentially more difficult to sandbox

@ArtOfCode This looks really, really nice.
Concerns:

I've already built this thing (took all of 10 minutes), but it's using the same dataset that @Undo asked me not to share :)

1. Can we sanatize everything? I assume this'd be running on the prod db, so we'd need a way to guarantee that tokens aren't ever ever ever going to be exposed.

@Undo You can run on a copy

2. this could be an awesome way to DDoS me, which would probably irritate me a little.

8:52 PM
SELECT avg(time) FROM posts WHERE feedback = "tpu" => Posts.by_feedback("tpu").map(&:time).avg

so do your data dump, with sanitization at that stage, import to a separate DB, and run the explorer on that copy

@JanDvorak shorter: Post.where(:is_tp => true).average(:time)

nice

Pretty sure that works. Not sure

@Undo there is that, but you can probably enable a query timeout at the MySQL server level

8:54 PM
@ArtOfCode this'd probably work
We can have a sanatize.sql in the repo somewhere, and just need to make sure we update it whenever we add/move PII anywhere

yup

Leaking tokens would be really really bad.

a little, yes

In that vein, we should probably also have some quick way to revoke all the tokens if something bad happens. There's an API method for that.

big red button time

8:56 PM
also, need to do math on how much hosting such a file for downloads would cost. Probably nothing, but it'd be nice to have some protection on it
Rails could probably handle ratelimiting and generating one-time links.

@Undo also, I'm near-100% certain that the data you gave me is safely sanitized

I went through every table with Sequel before handing it out, so it should be good. I just don't trust myself because I'm a dog.

Alternatively, @Undo - this doesn't have to be part of metasmoke. It could be an entirely separate application, which you can host if you want, or I can probably manage it if you don't.

That's another thought, although it might be good to have metasmoke's ACLs available

Roles? Yeah, this thing does make Devise/user-based auth available, so that's possible. Could require the Reviewer role, if you want to decrease the DDoS risk. Add a 30s query timeout, and you should be safe.

9:11 PM
@ArtOfCode except we'd need login too. Which could work
shrug I don't see a reason for this not to be part of metasmoke.
We could do one of those sub-app things.

@Undo Hm? Not getting you. This can use existing user accounts, look at github.com/ankane/blazer#devise
ankane seems to make a whole load of useful stuff

@ArtOfCode Right, but it'd be nice to have immediate role-changing ability instead of having to wait for the next dump
We have that already in metasmoke; might as well use it

Oh, if it's part of MS. Yeah, that's what I was thinking - use the MS prod DB to do user auth and save the queries, and sanitize/dump to a copy every 24h for the explorer to run on.

aye

I can start working on that, if you like, since I've already done it once
there's the sysadmin stuff that you'll have to do on the server, but the Rails bit of it can be done in the repo

9:15 PM
Need to handle automated sanitation first
@ArtOfCode Might as well throw it in a branch if you already have part of it

Ah, that would help. Shell script to call mysql with the sanitize statements you used last time?
plus some draw/dump stuff

@ArtOfCode I'll probably handle the crontab stuff outside of whenever, for flexibility
There are some other heavy jobs to schedule around
Should be as simple as duplicating a database; running a sanitize.sql file on it (that can be in the repo root), and dumping said copied database.

Aye - well you can just set that up however suits you, since I'm not going to need to run jobs at all
Yup
Branching

hmm
well short of git syncing those lists, not sure how we'd fix
then we'd have a buttload of commit headaches

yep
metasmoke is the other way to do it, it's probably stable enough these days

we could move those to a separate folder, have separate git roots
or MS it

which is probably the sane way

graphing it is gonna be interesting

11:40 PM
@ArtOfCode GRAPH EVERYTHING! :D

I meant hour of day, not date

oh
well you can have both then :P
that's the nice bit about having a data explorer that generates CSV for you

What's the status on Undo's Dr. email suggestion?

the hour-of-day query is slightly easier, actually
@JanDvorak [status:waiting-for-implementor]

nice, thanks
we already have "bad keyword with email in body", don't we?

11:44 PM
@ArtOfCode we're still OK with me pushing minor changes right?

@ThomasWard 's what you got code access for

indeed :)

@JanDvorak pretty sure, yeah

now if only my system would not be bloody slow...

So, let's just add "dr." to the list of those keywords

11:49 PM
@JanDvorak if you can find 'em
hint: it's probably not bad_keywords.txt

Apparently Dr. is already in the list
findspam.py:132:somewhere in the middle

@ArtOfCode I found something odd...
if not msg.room == charcoal_hq:
    msg.delete()
in chatcommands.py, line 1158.
charcoal_hq != defined

and yet it seems to work

true
it looks like it's not correctly referred to... hm

global variable?

11:58 PM
yeah it's imported as GlobalVars class, but not referenced as that value.
which is... interesting to say the least.
GlobalVars.charcoal_hq would maybe work

no idea how that works, but fix it anyway
