@boddhisattva I am here now

@CanadianLuke Hi There.. I actually had a question - superuser.com/questions/744080/….. and wondered if you could help me with it..

@boddhisattva Unfortunately, asking for tools or programs to do x, y and z features are off topic for Super Users. You could try on the Software Recommendations SE site, but your question will need cleaning up first

@CanadianLuke Thanks for your reply and suggestion, can you please suggest what needs to be cleaned up with respect to the question? Based on your inputs I'll try n put up a revised version of the question on the recommended site..

It's just difficult to read and understand. To me, it sounds like you want to edit files locally, and have the changes thrown back to the server, via Samba. Is that correct?

4:43 PM
@CanadianLuke Yes, exactly.. and I'm looking for an alternate to Samba.. something that I might need to only install at the client side.. like how winscp is used to copy files.. and the same is only installed on the client side..

... Why not use Samba? What type of files are you working on?

4:54 PM
they are ruby files(.rb), .html.erb files.. and similar files that one would use for Rails projects ... The thing with using Samba is that it takes additional load on the server side (from what I've heard).... I don't mind using it... but I'm wondering how can I make use of the same without putting additional load on the remote server.. The server already in a way seems to be over loaded with stuff( I admit that one solution to this problem would be house keeping)

If you want no overhead, do the files on the server directly... Using SSH. But you need to measure your productivity vs the load of the server. If you are spending more time waiting for files to upload, then I could see an issue. If you just want to work and don't mind it uploading in the background, there's no point not using Samba or WinSCP. Either way, there's encryption that will take overhead on the server, just like Samba would for its filesharing

The problem with dealing with files on the server directly is that you don't have a local editor like Sublime Text and in such cases indentation and searching for specific keywords within the codebase to fix a bug or to do something related takes longer than ever.. It's not that uploading takes too long.. it's just if each file belongs to different directories.. then I have to navigate my way to the location of each file with my rails app from both my local box and the remote server n den copy..

Does Sublime not do FTP?
