@Tester101 Yes, that. WHAT IS THAT CALLED?
@Aaron I doubt that's active load either. That's probably passive load. Closets - the act of hanging and removing articles - that's active load.

Winner of the completely useless award, or perhaps an essential app for the iPhone 10:

@Tester101 or drill test holes in an area you intend to cover up w/ boards anyway ;)

(on a side note, shame on imgur for limiting animated gifs to 2mb)
(but I won't complain too badly for a free site)

That's great, but what if you need to measure 3 ft?

you'll need to wait for the iPhone 12 to do that

12:00 PM
as big as it is they should install a tape measure
and a set of screw drivers
in fact they could make the swiss army iphone

They're all great ideas until TSA starts taking away your phone for having more than 3oz of shampoo in it.

@BMitch so totally stolen ;)
@BMitch lol

4 hours later…
4:17 PM
Ya'll are too noisy today

5:08 PM
@TheEvilGreebo I could ask about using DE for flea control on dogs: how long do you leave it in? Does it make them scratch (though it's probably less than a flea would, right?)

just take a handfull of it and rub it into their coats
and forget about it
it dries the skin a bit is all

that LCD tape measure makes no sense

5:30 PM
@Aaron That's why I gave it the "winner of the completely useless award"

6:14 PM
huh, guess it got deleted
someone asked a "should this tree come down" question - i commented that the q shoudl go on gardening and now the q is gone... not migrated tho...
guess the asker took it down
oops now its back
weird

Q: Second opinion: Arborist says tree needs to go

FreiheitI just had an arborist look at a red maple with a long bark split in my yard. His diagnosis was that it was struck by lightning (there was a close lightning strike a few months ago) and the tree needs to come down. Pics coming later today. Can the hive-mind at DIY.SE confirm or refute this diag...

There's some caching on the front page; you'll get the "1 new question" notification, look at it, go back to the front page and it'll be gone.

trippy

The refresh cycle is a couple of minutes (give or take)

guess i picked the wrong day to quit sniffing glue

I wonder if "height of a tree" would be off-topic these days?

6:21 PM
@TheEvilGreebo Lemme check with G&L on this one, they'll probably take it

@BMitch OP agrees
@NiallC. Height of a tree really isn't tree specific. Health of a tree is.

He's already cross-posted it
@TheEvilGreebo - You're right I forgot about Gardening.SE. gardening.stackexchange.com/questions/5266/… voted to close — Freiheit 1 min ago

ah, well, there we go then

@NiallC. Facepalm, what's the point of migrating when they are going to cross post.

@bmitch Dunno, sorry.

6:25 PM
@BMitch Causing high frustration levels in the blue population.

@TheEvilGreebo On that note, it's time for a tea break.

Madonna thinks Obama is a Muslim, threatens (offers?) to strip on stage if he's reelected
on the plus side, Fox News now admits he's NOT a Muslim...

I keep forgetting that @waxeagle is a G&L mod, I could save me a trip to the teachers lounge

@BMitch :)

6:31 PM
(that's a small part of the reason I hang out here, y'all are the most likely migration source)

@waxeagle keep your dirty gardening posts where they belong!
(get it? get it? "dirty" gardening? you see? you see?)

@TheEvilGreebo nod uh huh, good job pat's head

So where do questions about retaining walls go? Here or G&L?

@ChrisCudmore yes
honestly, I'd ask here, but we've got guys on gardening who know

6:47 PM
@ChrisCudmore If it's about a plant, G&L. If it's about a structure associated with your home (or yard), then I'd probably ask here.

@BMitch we do some landscaping too, so ponds and patios are technically on topic (that landscaping part of the name). But it's somewhat underserved IMO

@BMitch So, How do I make stakes for my Tomatoes goes here?

@ChrisCudmore You know, some days it's just not worth chewing through the restraints.

@ChrisCudmore no, that's for G&L

whats up

6:57 PM
It's Bug a Mod with stupid questions day!
My favourite day of the year!

@ChrisCudmore Really? I thought it was "Test the mod tools on Chris" day.
Aww shucks, my bad, that's tomorrow.

@ChrisCudmore Hahah, that needs to be used as a comment to all those bad "Harry homeowner" answers

It's not nice to use the R word anymore.

Q: What is a good way to cleanly cut through steel?

BasedAsFunkThis is for more of a craft project than home improvement, but this seems like a good place to ask this. What tools can I use to get a clean cut through steel? I have several mini beer kegs I need to cut the bottoms out of. I don't mind it taking a while, but my cuts are jagged (easy to cut mysel...

7:08 PM

It might have been on topic without the first sentence

Better than the usual "I know this is blatantly off-topic, but I'm going to ask anyway"

I think it can be reworded to make it on topic, anyone want to take a stab?

in related news, this is why cancer treatments tend to be ... tricky — Jeff Atwood Nov 14 '10 at 6:02
that's a great comment

I've got it open in an edit tab right now
How about now?

7:13 PM
@NiallC. Looks better, I'll put my mod hammer back in it's case. :)

@BMitch Don't do that, it's bad luck. Better use it on @ChrisCudmore while you've got it out

Hmm, should I kick the Chris?

When he's been acting up like he has today, of course you should!

7:29 PM

Blog reviewers, my MT-22 review blog post is ready for copyedit/review

Any way I can get review privileges?

7:46 PM
@ChrisCudmore If I can figure it out, you got it. This is the first time I'm over here since the login change.
@ChrisCudmore Try now

I can see it now. But I can see all drafts as well. You might want to be a bit finer grained about permissions. I'll behave for now though.

@ChrisCudmore We've only got 5 roles, I moved you up from contributer to editor. If you don't behave, the hammer is coming out.
@Aaron Nice post.

@Aaron -- Really good pictures.
And the ladder puts you with in arms reach of a wire. Is that the safety issue you were looking for?

I was guessing the base of the ladder was too close to the house, making it possible to fall backwards. Rule of thumb is to stand straight with your toes against the base of the ladder and extend your arms parallel to the ground. Your hands should just barely be touching the ladder.

8:14 PM
@ChrisCudmore yep, it's right next to the power service entrance
@BMitch actually they have a sticker of that on the ladder, showing the proper angle

@Aaron But if your gutter has any water in it, you'll be grounded and can work on that without any issues.

Just like in the shower.

@BMitch what about wasps?

@Aaron They'd be grounded too.
