@eimyr I don't know about players, but I'd love to play at a table run by Dan Carlin

Is he on Stackexchange?

I had a somewhat similar problem in my current 3.5e game. I had a Ranger. One of the other characters was a Druid. All the cool stuff I could do, was what the Druid could do several levels ago. Other than that, I was an archer. Got fed up with not being able to contribute, so I switched to a Cleric. I'm still outshined by the Druid (we all are... his animal companion often does more damage than the Fighter), but I have a wider range of situations where I can do something useful and unique

no idea--professional podcaster, and the best teller of history I've ever heard. It's so evocative how he describes anything from Antiquity to cities in the Middle Ages to a hidey-hole in a modern war zone....

I see.
I thought of people who are specifically from RPG.SE, but it works too

I don't know if I would say it that way, but I have troubles socializing. Out of character, despite being in the game from longer than anyone else there, there's been times where I disappeared for entire years. The oldest members of the community didn't play in the same chats as me, the newer ones lived there for a long time without knowing I existed and I can't really pretend I'm part of the environment.
I'm known in the forums for being vocal, for being a rules-lawyer (which is somewhat useful but sometimes not - like that time I got into a discussion about a spell that has been gimped an
I would like to master playing a character that is faithful to the setting, one of those characters who are so ingrained to the background that they could be canon (this is taken from the description of "this guy" on 1d4chan, I know)
At the same time, when the (local) canon is that people who get the outsider subtype should act detached from their former umanity, I know I want the mechanical benefits of the template but none of the roleplaying implications
And I envy those who are happy with roleplaying like that because they can get the better options and be praised for their role, while I either play my role badly or have a weak character - which people tells me shouldn't be a concern
Also, I hate using consumables. Which means I don't cast magical tattoos every day and I'm always weaker than the other players even with the same exact build
And then, I'm in another similar game where the DMs are less forgiving with characters and provide them possibly-deadly quests, where I play a useless character.
And I'm tired of being outshined and of dying every mission I do and of being told by other characters, in-game, that what I focus on doing is useless. (most of the players are from planescape factions that value power a lot and measure success in life as your capability to take what you want with force. There's also a higher ratio of evil characters).
(unfortunately, playing that character in the other game would make no sense because I'd lack some class features that are banned in the other game, and because of the lighter themes of the game)

it looks very complex and multifaceted
Just one question.
Would you prefer to embrace a working solution that would require you to abandon some of your desires or convictions, or would you prefer to keep them, but without resolving this issue?

@Zachiel hey--didn't want to seem conspicuous-by-silence. I had to step away to cook dinner, and then it'll be into the bath-and-bed routine. Be back in a few hours....

alright, I\'m going to sleep too
see ya tomorrow
tag me if you want to continue the discussion :)

@eimyr heh. I surely lean towards the second. I'm more the type of guy that hopes in some sort of miracle that solves the problem. But if the desires and convinctions could be lost gradually, painlessly and almost without recognizing what's going on, that would be great. Unfortunately I'm also the kind of guy that looks for a procedural solution to an emotional problem, but there's no "follow these steps to properly roleplay a character", right? (see you tomorrow)

@Zachiel which desires and convictions? your own?

@doppelgreener I think so, it was eimyr introducing the concept
I think I'm getting better at stating my situation, at least.

Your own desires and convictions change with you realising what's going on because you're the one who's got to do the changing of it. (Nobody else will nor can anyone else.) Along the way it involves effort and self-confrontation, which means sometimes it isn't painless. It's definitely gradual.

@eimyr as @BESW would tell you, I feel compelled to add: "This is a topic that Zachiel has touched several times here and we've been unable to provide a satisfying solution."
Ok, stuffy nose phase has ended, runny nose phase incoming. BRB.
@doppelgreener I sort of wish somebody could trick me into changing.

@Zachiel Doesn't happen that way.
