so you have to buy packs to get all the content or what?
@JoshuaAslanSmith how does this work, do i need the packages or can i subscribe to fantasy grounds?

@Tijnkwan you have to do both

thats pricy

@waxeagle Fantasy Grounds has a chargen feature? I though it was just a VTT.

6:05 PM
@Tijnkwan yes, yes it is

yeah wax and I have bee meaning to test the platform itself and just havent gotten around to it yet

so for the ultimate version i need $150 AND i need to buy +/- $150 in packs

@Tijnkwan yup
and that'd be all the expense if you do character creation online.
if your players want content offline they'd have to pay for what they want (Which is why they're offering a-la-carte classes

@Tijnkwan you can also just buy the packs and subscribe.
Im not saying this is ideal just listing it as an option

atm i am subscribed to insider for 2-3 years so if we completely switch over to 5e it might be worth it

6:10 PM
oh wow
yeah I just did a 3 month recurring sub

i believe 1 year sub was 70 euro or something

honestly a character builder is less important for 5e outside of having an organized and searchable class spell list

@Tijnkwan it's $71/year
@JoshuaAslanSmith agreed. A lot fewer options/possibilities and it's all pretty concentrated into one book (plus a campaign guide)

And most of those choices are levels 1-3.

@JoshuaAslanSmith hmmm true, in dnd 4e i Loved to create different characters and different builds

6:13 PM
@Tijnkwan yeah, there are a much much smaller number of possible builds in 5e

but 4e had so many books classes, powers and items

I mean you will make choices as you level but its about 1 choice per level
I need to finish my ranger spell list

thx for the advice, i will look into this

maybe do one for the other simple caster classes and subclasses

maybe subscribe for a while

6:14 PM
@Tijnkwan gotcha, they ahve a free trial version
lets you have 1 other player, Id suggest testing that out to see if you like the UI and UX of it before you throw money at it

i saw, thats a good start to get a feel for it

it is supposed to support "Core 3.5, 4e and 5e" rules

so sad the dungeonscape (codename morningstar) app is discontinued

which I guess means some kind of keyword/math functionality
@Tijnkwan did you try it?

i liked the ui
i had it on ipad
for 2 days xD
then it was removed

6:15 PM
oh I see you did, I thought it was poorly scaled and the the UX was really bad I was testing on a PC browser since the android version never materialized
also it was totally an alpha despite what they called it

true
but the movies showed promice
promise
trailers

hey everyone. enjoy the rest of your day, i'm out. =)

@sillyputty PEACE

bbye

@sillyputty cya
would want to be ya :p

6:36 PM
Wow Conversation killer

*sigh* And this is why we don't answer questions that are being steadily close-voted: rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/59825/…
@Pureferret Just timing.

downvotes for all answerers

Yeah. Now we have a new asker who got what they wanted and will think we're the place to find "what should I do with my plot" advice next time.

ill probably vote to delete it after the waiting period is up

@SevenSidedDie you and Josh and I can kill all 3 if we want? I just cast delets

6:42 PM
the fact hat he best answered an answer and even commented saying thanks means hes never coming back to it
@waxeagle 24hr cooldown from being closed though right?

@JoshuaAslanSmith not for answers

ah I mean the question itself

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah, we can't delete that, but it doesn't necessarily need to be. The answers on the other hand...

@waxeagle Agreed

@waxeagle we can kill the question as 10k rep users
Users with reputation >= 10k (more precisely, the “moderator tools” privilege; 2k on beta sites) can vote to delete questions that have been closed/on-hold for 48 hours. It takes three votes to delete; more if the question is popular, but ten votes at most.
like I said, just gotta wait

Q: How does deleting work? What can cause a post to be deleted, and what does that actually mean? What are the criteria for deletion?

jjnguyWhat circumstances can cause a question or answer to be deleted, and what does that actually mean? How can a post be deleted? When can't I delete my own post? Can I see a list of my deleted posts? How can I undelete one of my posts? What does deletion mean for a post? How do votes to delete wo...

6:46 PM
@JoshuaAslanSmith I need me some more rep

answer the valid 5e questions lol

@waxeagle Yeah, the question might be salvageable, if asker is sticking around at all. If they're not then no big deal, but if they are, then we do want to redirect them to the Stack Way.

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah, I don't mind nuking the question later..just suggesting that the 3 of us could get together and axe the answers :)

@JoshuaAslanSmith Could do....

@waxeagle I could be persuaded

6:48 PM
@waxeagle Already voted on the answers. On the off chance the question will be fixed, it should restart with a clean slate for answers. I left a comment asking if they can rephrase.

@waxeagle @SevenSidedDie the die is cast

@SevenSidedDie cool
woo! premod power collusion! these are your future mods ladies and gents (well...2 of us at least)

nothing you can do now, it's deleted
tbh though, yes. if you answer a bad question, you get beat down.
specially if you do so poorly. It's not behavior we want here

@Pureferret yeah I dv'd the qustion as well

6:52 PM
deleted answers will get their rep back now...it's not a big deal

@waxeagle Woo

@waxeagle The whole site is carrot and stick, yeah. Nobody likes the stick, but can't work without it.

yup

as someone who was overly sensitive about my own first downvoted answer it just happens and getting your nose bloodied is part of becoming a real SE user

@JoshuaAslanSmith The first rule of SE Club is... read the rules.

6:57 PM
exactly
I know on the one hand we should try to be welcoming and friendly and weve had isseus with being to brusque in the past but the pendulum can swing the otherway and we can encourage help vampires and fail to reform bad behavior

7:12 PM
I've just savagely edited the question

yeah most of the actual story doesnt matter
It think theres more to it than that but its a good framework to go from

Yeah I hope it can be build on
there is a tiny nugget of a good question, and op seems to be sticking around

it's currently too broad, but it could go somewhere when reduced to that

lol and he just reverted it
I guess Ill wait to post the edit I was working on
see if he will narrow it down again
even if the question was solid Id still probably edit it as its a wall of text and detail that is outside whats needed

7:28 PM
But with roleplayers

The question has too much baggage 😞

hahahaha

@Pureferret I think some of it is necessary for context though. For your revision, the only answers it would get is a stamped of "no, never!" and "no, just being separated isn't enough reason."

@SevenSidedDie Fair enough
He's deleted the answer
@SevenSidedDie I think the core of the Q is that this PC has wandered off, and Dunlop is trying to decide if killing them off by, like saying 'Wolves eat you, because you made a poor decision', is ok or not?

7:32 PM
@Pureferret Maybe, yeah, but I can't tell. Especially that "committing DM Fiat" like it's some kind of universal crime makes me think that there's something going on here that's not obvious yet.

It sounded more like from a narrative standpoint no way this PC doesnt get executed and hes conflating story logic with DM fiat
I think he sees DM fiat as any death occuring other than from a save vs trap or in combat

It's hard to tell. Maybe he just wants to avoid feeling guilty? Maybe he knows the player will be angry? Maybe he knows it's not time to die yet (Narrative Logic talking) and he's just stuck for the best way to miracle the fighter out of trouble? Dunno.

@JoshuaAslanSmith Maybe

right Im just guessing on his fuzzy terminology
you guys see his comment?

Aaaand we have Flounce.

7:35 PM
yep
guess he found the delete buton
his last comment was "How do I delete my question AND my account"

@Pureferret NO TEARS
2
circle of life brah

Alas poor Dunlop, we knew you not at all except by your question...which admittedly was a poor fit
3

@Pureferret Gold Star chat comment right there

I feel like I need a skull to hold when I quote hamlet

7:37 PM
good find

My verdict: significant confusion about "fiat" and wanting to get ideas for how to avoid killing the fighter → needed a forum anyway to get sorted and get ideas.

this one seems fitting

right
it felt like a reddit post

@JoshuaAslanSmith Sort of...

have you used the 5e reddit, its like mad max over there

7:56 PM
I'm really bothered that got deleted like that. After seeing your guys' confusion I agree that there was a lot of extraneous information, but the core question was very answerable. Too bad they rage quit.

pretty sure +4 is outside the bounds of the system

Q: What RPG games have randomized yet creative weapons and dungeons,like Diablo but randomized

LukasI can't find any games that have randomized items AND dungeons.Yet I want the items to be unique and interesting. PLEASE just list the games that anyone finds that are completely randomized

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah...though +3 was tops for weapons

even legendary swords and whatnot are still +3

@DCShannon Even your answer, as the best of them, was still "these are some ideas." We just don't do that.

@SevenSidedDie Concur

8:06 PM
wow...looks like I actually do get an office...definitely wasn't counting on that...

We also don't want to teach new users to think we do that. And if they want to leave because we don't do that, then this is, ironically, desireable.

@waxeagle Nice!

@Grubermensch yeah, our HR person saw my coworker moving into his new one and was like "where's [wax's] office" she promptly decided I could have our conf room

@waxeagle its an item from a previous edition's setting, which dragonlance was in 2nd edition

@JoshuaAslanSmith yeah, I kind of figured, not many foci allow for +1 at all in 5e...may have to hunt through items tonight

8:11 PM
@SevenSidedDie Well, actually we do do answers like that all the time. The 2nd-most upvoted answer on my question I was referring to is such an answer, and I've seen plenty of other lists of ways to do things. As long as you can get all the reasonable options in one answer, it seems to be accepted. If we were consistent about it it would be one thing, but it seems to me like questions will randomly and arbitrarily get shot down.
Oh well, if he would have stuck around we probably could have worked something else. I gotta run.

lol, we...could undelete it too...we have that collective power...
(probably not a good question to use that on)

@waxeagle Tempted to re-ask

@Pureferret meh, it might be just as well to wait for an entirely new OP in that situation

@waxeagle Perhaps

@DCShannon If we're inconsistent, we should become consistent on the side of nuking opinion-based questions, not breaking that wide open for more opinion-based questions.

8:14 PM
Will probably have a bunch of questions based on nWoD soon enough

Or put another way: I don't think we're actually inconsistent. Questions that survive usually do because they're answerable from somewhere other than pure opinion.

@SevenSidedDie I find it funny that several SE have tags like , or and they are the more technical ones like Serverfault and Maths

@Pureferret yeah, doing that with tags is a really bad idea

@waxeagle shocking even

Serverfault had a lot of problems with tag merges into off topic recently that caused a huge mess of trouble

8:17 PM
Those Stacks are also larger, and have citizenry less educated on the why of Stack policies, making self-policing more difficult.

@BESW So a combination of being small and....more conscious of SE reasonings?

@Pureferret Yeah, I don't understand those.

@SevenSidedDie and I thought Sci-Fi had problems
cue @BESW explaining about lacking a base problem

@Pureferret Yeah, I think we've got a very active, solid membership that is really keen on learning and applying guidelines, principles, and rules.
Funny, I can't imagine why we'd have that tendency. ;)

@Pureferret Yeah. A small population is both easier for moderators to guide and more likely to be able to guide itself.
Our mods have done a great job educating the RPG.SE citizenry on why these policies matter, so we're more liable to take agency in enforcing them.

Q: Where can I find a proper library of free adventures for Core and Accelerated?

Alex MitanI can't find a proper repository of premade adventures, and I'm pretty lost as to what I'm going to GM with Fate Accelerated. I'm willing to take Core adventures and try to adapt them, but it's not preferable.

Are published Fate-anything adventures even a thing?

@BESW Now I know. Just seems... unnecessary, since anything can be adapted into Fate pretty much on the fly once you've got skill lists and PCs sorted.

I've used Aeon Wave as an introductory scenario for players who were maybe going to freeze up at the full firehose of Fate's "you can do anything!" approach to campaigns.
In particular, the half-pre-made PC sheets inspired my approach to PC creation in almost all my Fate games since.
(It's also very nice to have someone do the heavy lifting if you want to game in a genre that you're not totally sanguine about how to evoke.)

@BESW Yes, for unfamiliar settings, that makes a lot of sense.

@BESW Humourous phrasing
badum-tshhh

8:32 PM
My group loves fate, hates creating aspects

I have a question that has been bugging me for a long time, but doesn't merit a question of its own on the site (probably because it's a really stupid question). But I always find it hard to figure out the attack bonus of a weapon. Let's say a guard is carrying a longsword +5 (1d8+2). The way I read it, the +5 comes from his BaB and Str, and the +2 on the dmg comes from his Str.
Now what happens if he is slain, and I take his weapon? It's not a +5 weapon. Do I always have to deduce the weapon back to it's original bonus (if any) or am I just reading the initial stats wrong?

@MarcDingena This would be D&D? 3.5?

Sorry, Pathfinder

@MarcDingena That is suitable for the main site..
There are no stupid questions, just duplicates
and questions not suited for our Q and A format

yeah i couldn't find any good hits, because i don't know concise terms to search on... I tried stuff like "attack bonus weapon derived".

8:35 PM
But you are having trouble grasping a rule after putting effort into trying.

Most stat blocks I've seen, a normal sword with a +5 to hit would be listed as longsword +5 (1d8+2). (Note the italics). If a sword was itself magical, it would be shown as longsword +5 (note the +5 is in italics, part of the weapon name, not the NPC's stats)

so I guess what I am saying is.... ask on the site cause that will cast a wider net

@lisardggY That's still....a little loose

@Pureferret Loose, but a guideline, something to look out for.

I'll formulate it into a question then. Thanks for having a look.

8:37 PM
Here's one: "Can you make an Osirisian Promethean without discarding the 13th piece?"

Actually, it's even clearer than that. For magical weapons, Paizo seems to prefix the weapon's plus, so it's, for instance:
> Melee +1 longsword +14/+9/+4 (1d8+2/19–20) or mwk dagger +14/+9/+4 (1d4+1/19–20)
Magical items are both italicized, and their magical power listed before the base name, so it's clearer.

So that +14/+9/+4 is then always because of the carrier's stat block, not inherent from the weapon?

@MarcDingena Exactly. The weapon is just as it is listed - a +1 longsword, meaning it adds +1 to its wielder's attack and damage rolls. Nothing more.

@MarcDingena That's from the stat block, but including the weapon.

I think my level 3's are now walking around with vastly overpowered weapons... Funny, because they still can't hit for shit...

8:41 PM
Taken away, what is it? It's a magic +1 longsword, like it says on the tin.

Weapons don't have inherent pluses to hit. These come from a character's BAB, attributes and any other modifiers applied.

@lisardggY (Unless it's magic.)

@MarcDingena The +14/+9/+4 in both cases that @lisardggY lists includes a +1 enhancement bonus, since one of the weapons is a +1 weapon, and the other is masterwork.

@lisardggY That's where it got me confused, because I thought it was, by masterwork of by magic

@SevenSidedDie Of course. "weapons", in general. A longsword doesn't give more pluses to hit than a dagger or an axe. Pluses to hit isn't a quality of a weapon (in PF. Some systems do have that)

8:43 PM
@lisardggY Right, yes.

So... if it was a character without any bonuses, a magical weapon would be written as +1 dagger +1?

@MarcDingena A character with +0 BAB, +0 STR modifier and no other modifier? Yes. Something like:
> +1 dagger +1 (1d4+1)

Magic always applies to both attack and dmg rolls? (I run an unusual low-magic campaign, and I'm just about to crack open the magic jar, so that's why)

The original stat block I linked to comes from Paizo's NPC codex, for a 16th level character with STR 12 - that's a BAB of +12/+7/+2, +1 from STR and +1 from the magical sword.
@MarcDingena Yup - both attack and damage

All you guys rock by the way :D

8:48 PM
Masterwork gives you +1 to hit, but not to damage, and it doesn't stack with enchantment bonuses.

13
Q: What is the limit for the Masterwork Bonus?

Axel_690Are Masterwork weapons limited to a +1 bonus, or can the bonus go all the way to +5? The reason I ask is the books usually refer to items with a bonus as magical items, but the books also say that all magic weapons and armor are masterwork.

Okay so I feel a bit stupid posting this question on the site now that I've been told the answer....

Hey, it can be useful for people in the future that way (more readily than chat archives).
'cause I would have been awfully confused myself.

I'm surprised it doesn't seem to have been asked already.

Me too :P Because usually when I have questions and feel lucky to score some rep for it, it's already been asked before :P

8:51 PM
That there is a nice, clean question.

Now a question for chat, how can I correct my cockup by giving my low level campaigners overpowered weapons? :P They did get themselves captured though, I guess I can just strip their gear.

How overpowered, and how quickly do you expect them to level?

I don't want to start next session going like "yeah remember that +5 crossbow you took last session, that's a +0 now..."
Admittedly, we were all still pretty boozed from the night before and I think one of the Str / BaB deductions went a little hazy, and the bows ended up with +5 and I wasn't even mad.... Now I have something to clean up...

Ah, yeah, I see. I don't have any useful advice as I haven't ever really played in anything but low magic games, so I don't know the relative impact of a +5, not having had any of them.
Hmm. The time has come to decide whether I want this 3.5 character to be an elf or a helf. Elves are... kinda just better, but I like half-elves. :P

@MarcDingena You're saying you're only now letting magic into the setting? In that case, there are no set expectations yet, and you can play with it. Have their magic fluctuate. Was it +5 yesterday? Well, it's +1 today. Maybe the magic went away. MAybe it's linked to phases of the moon.

8:56 PM
Easy, you bring them into the decision-making process: "Hey, guys, turns out I was mis-reading the stat blocks. Those items you looted were supposed to be [actual enhancement value]. I think that's going to majorly screw with the balance of the game. Do we care about that? If so, how do you want to fix it?"

I just made them level too... I take from Pathfinder what we like, and what we don't like is XP for fights. We just level up every so often, when there is a point in the story where it makes sense for them to have learned from their adventures.

Yeah, BESW's got a point. Honesty may be the best policy here.

@MarcDingena That's probably the most common house rule I've encountered for D&D/PF. So much so that they officially acknowledged it in 5e, IIRC.

Come into the conversation with some ideas, like just flat-out ret-conning the whole thing, or making wild magic in that area a plot point (so that when they leave the place, the values go down).

@lisardggY That is a good suggestion, but unfortunately the bows aren't explained as being magically enhanced. In fact, there is no magic yet, but there will be. I'm introducing a new player to the table next session, and I hope they will play a spontaneous caster. The campaign has been ramping up to "magic are fairytales, but weird shit is happening more often lately".

8:58 PM
@MarcDingena In that case, I'd go with @BESW's ever-sensible suggestion.

Mistakes happen, communication is always helpful, etc.

I think it'd be fun for them to wield some overpowered weapons for a bit.... they have been having really, really really bad rolls lately...
i could throw in a second wave of guards if it looks like they're having a cakewalk with these new weapons
seeing as they're captured now, and in the encampment they will meet the new player's character, also tied up, it could get interesting to bust out of there A-Team style

Well, keep in mind that because of the way numbers scale in PF, at a certain point adding more trivial enemies doesn't make the encounter any less trivial.

Thanks for your help, all :)
Good night

I notice a trend with the type of question there...

9:10 PM
@Tritium21 What, they're mostly opinion-based?
It's nice that Question #1 has an answer on that list.

They are, at a glance, "talk to your damn players like human beings" questions

They're universal questions (and answers), and not system specific, which makes them accessible to a larger audience of readers.
And yes, when you ask gaming questions that aren't about any particular system, interpersonal relations become the #1 issue. :)

(10/13 questions are at least)

I am seriously considering hiding all system tags from my front page.

I should hide D&D 5
it feels like 9/10ths of all questions now are 5e

9:15 PM
Wouldn't know. Hiding it. :)
I hardly care about the mechanics for the systems I'm actually playing, much less ones I'm not.
Hmm. Hiding most popular systems (PF, D&D>=3e, Shadowrun, WoD) leaves me with general questions, universal questions, mistagged questions and questions about rarer or obscure systems. Kinda nice.
True, 5 of my top 10 answers are to questions I wouldn't see with my current settings, which is a shame - because they're (mostly) the sort of system questions I do like.

@Ceribia Hi!

@Ceribia Hello!

(Either that or basic system questions that I simply happened to stumble onto first)

Good Evening!

9:30 PM
@Anaphory Indeed!

@Anaphory Indeed it is
GMT?

Yes

@Anaphory snap

well, technically WEST, so +1

9:37 PM
I'm running a LRP (based on Blood and Tears) next weekend, for the first time, and spent sooo much work on it already, without even doing any physical prep yet…

@Anaphory Thus is larp

Thus is LRP if you first try to reskin and simplify the rules, in particular.

@Anaphory Oh man....

It's a test for GameSoc invites Steampunksoc, so it better be somewhat steampunk…

@Anaphory Ahh that's true
Arrow is definitely a Fate game,

9:47 PM
Oblique reference: I'm reminded of a three hour argument I had with a previous boss about whether the SCA was LARPing or not.

@DuckTapeAl My guess would be not

My argument boiled down to: They're definitely roleplaying, and it's not played around a table, so the best term to describe what they're doing would be Live-action Role Play.

@DuckTapeAl Does SCA roleplay?

Yeah. They have like, kingdoms and stuff.
Not fantasy, but more realistic medieval stuff.

And they have rules about it, don't they?

9:50 PM
@DuckTapeAl then it's LARP

The boundaries towards Reenactment/Experimental Archeology/Improv Theatre/... are difficult.
But if it has rules, there is good reason to consider it some form of Role Playing Game.
Also, was it merely an academic discussion, or was there a point where it would have made a difference whether it's LARPing or not?

I'm getting mixed up over PtC
Do the Lineages have a leaning towards transformations, or just the Refinements having that leaning?

It was academic.
It basically boiled down to the fact that she had bad experiences at SCA events, and didin't like either the game or its players, and thus wanted to push it away as 'not a LARP'.
I think mainly because it's supposed to simulate real medieval life, and doesn't have any fantastic elements.

I think what's throwing me is that the x-splat normally gives the powers, not the y-splat

Ursula Vernon's first post about her African journey is interesting, but for folks like us who often try to create the illusion of a fictional language being real--"Sometimes a word falls off your language."

9:59 PM
@Miniman yo ho ahoy

@Pureferret Hi!

@Miniman you have any expertise in nWoD?

@Pureferret I've heard of nWoD...

@Miniman It's a start I guess....
nWoD people don't seem to hang out in chat

Maybe the atmosphere isn't gothic enough?

10:04 PM
@Miniman We need a dark theme
With animated dripping blood

And dice so marbled and dark you can't actually read what's on them.
Contrast? Contrast is for happy people.
2

That's a start

I'm not kidding, I've had those, they're terrible. The gold fades quickly and becomes illegible. But hey, they have bloody tips.

@lisardggY I've often found this amusing, given the originating philosophies of the gothic subculture.
Also, what is it with gold-on-green dice? My first set of dice (a present) was gold-on-turquoise and it was nearly illegible before the paint started coming out.

Marble! Rot! Blood! Soul!

10:12 PM
@lisardggY Dumbledore's opening-feast remarks get stranger every year.
4

@BESW At some point someone will realize it's just a magical automaton repeating Markov-chain permutations of previous Dumbledore speeches.

Happy happy boom boom swamp swamp swamp!

@lisardggY Oh wow....

@DuckTapeAl Vengaboys' new album is pretty good!

@Pureferret The '1' is a rose, of course. Or is it the '0'? I could never remember and had to look at the adjacent sides to be sure.

10:14 PM
Is that a Vengaboys thing?

@DuckTapeAl I get Vengaboys and Aqua mixed up, for reasons that should be obvious.

I was just referencing HPMOR.

Look familiar @BESW?

10:18 PM
@Pureferret [gibbers in a corner] A black stroke does not make it okay to put your text on high-contrast marbling.

@BESW 👍

@BESW Well, WW never did care much about the text and its readability. Or copy-editing. Or editing in general.

@lisardggY So I hear.

Ooh, glad to see Garfield Minus Garfield is still up.

@lisardggY Onyx Path seems better with their IP

10:25 PM
@Pureferret What, no See Page XX?

@lisardggY Not that I've seen
@lisardggY has something to do with early access pdfs, then PoD when errors spotted

Ah, but you see, page XX is the 13th floor of White Wolf books: it doesn't exist, but if you somehow find it anyway, strange and unseelie truths will be revealed.
Ask Lovecraft has opinions about the Force, and nearly corpses himself.

lol @besw xD
although that question brings up something that bugs me -- "demon" and "daemon" get conflated in fantasy contexts far too often, when they originally referred to very different concepts

What's the difference?

Greek daemon were spirits of places.

@lisardggY -- yeah, I was about to go there :) demon has always referred to some-evil-thingy AIUI, while daemon was originally used to refer to some sort of helper-spirit in the Greek mythos (which is why it was adopted as a piece of Unix jargon referring to server-type processes)

Wiki phrases it "Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits [..] similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the deities themselves"

so Chaotic Good/Chaotic Neutral -- definitely not Chaotic Evil!

Although it does seem that Cacodaemons, specifically, seem to preserve the original etymology - the term was used in Greek for the evil type of daemons, as opposed to the good-natured Agathodaemon.
...or so wikipedia instructs me.
The words "dæmon" and "daimōn" are Latinized versions of the Greek "δαίμων" ("godlike power, fate, god"), a reference to the daemons of ancient Greek religion and mythology, as well as later Hellenistic religion and philosophy. == Description == Daemons are benevolent or benign nature spirits, beings of the same nature as both mortals and deities, similar to ghosts, chthonic heroes, spirit guides, forces of nature or the deities themselves (see Plato's Symposium). Walter Burkert suggests that unlike the Christian use of demon in a strictly malignant sense, “[a] general belief in spirits is not...

@lisardggY Sounds like a wikimancy incantation

Linguistically, demon is distinguished as a Christian interpretation of the Greek daimōn. It's part of the cultural assimilation of non-Christian spiritual concepts into the Christian worldview, by slotting the Greek notion of daimonion (which wasn't always even a personification or individualistic concept) into a distinctly Christian notion of spiritual reality.

Is there a way to look for deleted questions?

wait, there's such a thing as cacao demons? Is that why my hot chocolate tastes funny sometimes?

It's strangely egalitarian, in a twisted-up-in-knots kind of way: the Greek belief in some spiritual force they called daimonion was not rejected by Christian thought, but instead just had to be found a place where it made sense within the Christian canon.

@DuckTapeAl dataexplorer?
@DuckTapeAl data.stackexchange.com ?

(Similar to how local heroes and deities would often be assimilated as saints.)

I don't know what that is, but I'll check it out.

@BESW I read that as Dame Onion. She makes everyone cry.

@DuckTapeAl I remember there was an advanced search command for it, but I can't remember what it was
(For >10k users only,of course)

There's one for "closed:yes", but I can't find one for deleted questions.

I don't think it's possible to search deleted content. You have to find a link.

Most meta.SE posts I find, though old, agree that it's a mod-only feature.

Prometheans confuse me

@BESW as they did with an awful lot of things. It's nice to see some of the original history behind these things before it was assimilated.
